A friend of mine once tampered with his laptop and broke the SATA port. I fixed his computer by mounting his HDD in a caddy in the place of the optical drive. However, I can distinctly remember the awfully slow speed (about 20-30 MB/s) of the HDD when running off of the caddy. I presumed that the speed of the ODD SATA connector was somehow limited, partly because it is much smaller than the standard HDD SATA port, and partly because the bandwidth seems sufficient for the ODD it was designed for. This video however seems to invalidate my theory and previous experience; is there any other reason why this could happen? I'm asking because I'm considering installing a SSD in my laptop instead of the ODD and would like to know if its performance would be hindered either by the caddy or by the SATA ODD interface on the motherboard.

Note: Some vendors save money by not using a sata3 interface but rather 2 or 1,so some old laptops might be slower while using a caddy while using an SSD, if using an hdd the speeds between sata2 or 3 might not be noticeable.

go for a large storage capacity ssd if possible. Otherwise place ssd inside and hdd outside. Remember to keep your frequently used stuff in ssd only as speed of hdd will be reduced and will lead delays in opening files.

So putting the drives in caddy will lower the speed no matter if its ssd or hdd it will not give its peak performance how much percentage of Hdd performance will be reduced if i put hdd in caddy any rough idea?

    • @truesyner2009
      @truesyner2009 Před 3 měsíci

no the HDD speed won't be affected. I think the caddy can provide a max speed of ~450mb/s and while it does hamper a SSD's performance, HDDs are slow running at max ~150mb/s so they will run normally.

i think its up to your preference.
up til now im using ssd sata on caddy slot that use sata 3 interface speed @ 6gbps (read&write speed ~500mbps), in my case there is no difference speed between hdd slot or caddy slot.
or maybe you interested using ssd on your external case such as via usb 2.0 or 3.1, i think its ok since enclosure/external case have sata 3 interface speed @ 5gbps (read&write speed ~400mbps). it might be slight slower than caddy slot or hdd slot.
but it might different if you using nvme enclosure that can be connected to type-c on your laptop it have pcie interface with speed @ 8gbps (read & write speed ~800 mbps)

Laptop I have has 4gb ram and internal around 1tb hdd. Which should be good option:
    1) use 120gb caddy ssd and clone windows files on it?
    2) replace internal hdd with ssd and hdd in caddy tray? Will caddy handle 1tb hdd that easily?
    3) add another 4gb ram stick?

bhai mere pass dell 3542 hai aaj hi li hai ssd caddy.
    1. meine ssd caddy mei dala hai filhal kyuki dusra area screw ke baad khul nai rha hai...
ssd se ssd mei hi data transfer copy kar rha hu toh 250mbps speed hai agar hdd se sdd mei karta hu toh copy 80mbps hai...kya yeh sahi speed hai speed? constant hai hdd ki tarah fluctuations nai hai.
2.ek aur baat disk management mei jakar jo ssd caddy hai waha option aaya ta first wo meine okay and format kar diya hai par ssd dvd wale jagah hi alag icon mei hi aaya hai jaise pendrive aur dvd ka alag section hota hai c d e wale jagah nai aaya hai my computer mei first line mei...kya karna hai batao iska
3.clone wale videos bhi deke hai par muhje hdd ka C drive clone karna hai sirf with apps without losing other partitions.
asa posible hai toh batao time leta hai wo software fir kuch error aagya ya bhi mei hi kaam ruk ke sab karab na hojaye wo darr hai toh soch rha hu ssd mei new windows dalu thodi firse mehnat lagegi apps n all ke liye.

Bhai speed 80mbps se aage isliye nhi ja rhi h kyunki data read hard disk se ho rha h.. Hard disk ki read speed bhut kam hoti h as compared to ssd.
Wo dusre line me isliye h kyunki wo abhi secondary disk hai.. Ssd me windows install karne pe wo first line me aa jaegi or system disk ban jaegi.. zada achi performance or speed le liye system disk ko caddy me mat daalna internal sata ka hi use karna..
Or clone krne me koi risk nhi h aap kisi bhi ache software se c drive ko clone kr skte ho jese Macrium reflect hai.. or zada hi simple or fresh krna h pc to fresh copy install kr lena windows ki nayi drive me directly..

If a SSD gets slow in caddy interface then definitely a HDD too will get slow, so if you want to use both SSD and HDD at same time, better use SSD in caddy. If you will your HDD in caddy it's performance will downgrade which will result in slow loading of apps installed in HDD (mostly games)
