  • @fwcolb
    @fwcolb Před 4 lety +7

    Many thanks. Just implemented this process. Used Macrium Reflect for cloning. Kept it simple by cloning a one terabyte platter HD to a one terabyte SSD. My laptop is an HP Pavilion 15 about 5 years old that I had previously upgraded to a one TB HD a year or so ago. My first plan was to place the SSD device in the CD-ROM caddy. But that would not give the best SSD performance.
    So I replaced the old HD with the new SDD (after cloning). And then I fitted the old HD in the caddy and replaced the CD-drive with the caddy. BINGO! That's the way to get the best performance from the SSD, as this video says.
    Now the clincher. Anyone who uses a laptop onsite to do a contract job has to backup continually. Otherwise, there is the risk that malware will cause loss of work and lost time and even breach of contract. But with this setup, backup is easy. When I take a break of 5 or 10 minutes every hour or so, I save a new version of the file I am working on (v.01, v.02, v.03). Now, instead of backing up each new version on an external USB drive, I back up on the second internal HD. Saves time.
    And if I install new software or install an update to existing software or to the operating system, at the end of the working day, I can just clone the SSD to the second internal HD.
    Then if catastrophe strikes in the form of failure of the SSD or malware, I can just swap the old HD back into the drive bay on the motherboard and I am back at work in less than 10 minutes. The cost of a one TB SSD plus HD caddy are now low enough to be classed as insurance against data loss.
    Actually, I am more paranoid about data loss than this and do keep more than one clone of my main drive on an external HD. And store one clone in a safe place in case the laptop is lost or stolen.
    I have worked this HP Pavilion very hard on offshore sites in more than one country and more than one continent, back and forth every day from hotel to client office. And it still chugs along. Obviously I don't edit videos, at least not often. So the "slow" speed of the I5 CPU is no problem and since my laptops usually last 10 years (until the keyboards wear out) I have no reason to replace the laptop with a later model.
    So great to boot in seconds instead of minutes.

    The reason that the HDD may not be detected in the optical drive is because maybe, the HDD is drawing too much current from the DVD's internal port, during the initial spin up, HDD will draw significantly more current for a few seconds, manufacturers probably didn't anticipated their DVD slot will experience such a current surges so they might not make enough power headroom for the DVD power rails. Of course this is from my personal opinion, it may depended on several factors (Chipsets, Drivers, HDD brands...)

      @@iceseic Kind of. The thing is if your laptop older and CD/DVD driver is connected not by SATA III, but II you won't be able to use SSD to its full potential. So it means that if you put SSD (which has bigger write/read speeds than HDD) it won't be utilized fully. Now HDD doesn't have that speed, so it makes perfect sense to place it in the caddy and put SSD in the primary spot.

    You can change the boot device order in the BIOS, i might make a program to clone the drive if needed with multiple partition support etc

    I've never heard of the word slimline before or since.
