  • Carrying on from where we left, the highlight has to be unique 89001 'Avocet' working the Peterborough commuter with all First Class stock, but there's also a couple of 91's running blunt end first, split headcode box Class 37's on Speedlink, Class 47's on parcels and freight, Class 31's, BR Blue Class 101's, Provincial Class 156's, Network SouthEast Class 317's, and InterCity HST's. Filmed during May 1989.

The stock the class 89 was hauling would've been the evening "commuter" Intercity service, from King Cross to Peterborough. Usually, this would've been a rake of HST mk3s with a buffer fitted power car. Once at Peterborough, 89001 would normally run round, and couple up to the power car to work ECS to Bounds Green, or occasionally, the 89 would be shut down, and the 43 would haul the whole lot to Bounds Green.

+David Gattenberg Still a pretty rare sight to see a blunt end 91 these days - sadly 89001 is only preserved now of course, but at least not scrapped.

Back then they were saying how the new HSTs lacked character and soul and they missed the Deltics. Funny how that repeats every time a new train arrives. In 25 years the generation that grew up with class 80X units will be saying the same thing then about whatever replaces them.

That 91 dragging is great catch. Wonder where the other class 43 went though . I don't think I ever saw that before ,even when broken down , crashed or whatever there are usually always the 2 43's ,one each end

Alan Surgeoner only one power car was used on these sets. It was being used as a DVT, the TDM has more than likely failed so the class 91 has had to be moved to the London end of the train. Not sure why they wouldn’t just use the Class 43 to haul the train, maybe that had an issue too. The Mk4’s were still being built then.
