  • 89001 at Grantham in October 1988.Running round the stock of a driver training working in the West Yard,on an InterCity service from Leeds and working 1A32 to kings Cross from Grantham.

    BR should hve gone with the Class 89s. Co Co bogies the lot, very silly decision not to.

      Yes but for the electrical reliability issues which appear difficult to overcome. Also I prefer the blunt cab end of Class 91, being better aerodynamically with a rake of coaches. And of course that wonderful chime horn which would have been an easy fix (I don't recall hearing the Class 89's horn tbf).

      One off test bed, good overall once a few niggles were overcome, there should have been a minimum production run, good enough for both high speed work, and freight alike.
      Unique indeed, the 89 should be kept available for railtours in working preservation. 🙂👍
