    It's actually funny that Mark brought up how Season 2 really felt like the climax of the story, a place where it could have ended. Because for a lot of anime, a season like Season 2 could have easily capped off the story, and most would be happy with it. However Season 3 likes to remind you that none of the main characters actually accomplished their primary goals yet, and that some "forgotten" plot points were never resolved or clarified. The story never got concluded in Season 2, it just got delayed. Season 2 was a bombastic distraction that served as a stepping stone for the growth of Mob Psycho's characters.

      I think we’re just beaten down by the typical plot contrivances of most anime and stories in general.
      Mobs such a fairly grounded show at heart, that the concept that everyone could ever just live happily ever after after doing one grand gesture kinda goes against what it was about
      Reigen will still have doubts about himself, mob with still have issues with accepting himself and learning to perceive others, seasoning city will always be under attack by psychic threats, someday, mob and reigen will speak for the last time....
      But while important, none of that really matters because the power to keep growing and improving will always be there, and as long as they continue to learn and grow, there’s nothing to worry about. We can’t be right all the time, sometimes messing up will be a necessary step in order for us to actually experience things and even grow to be better sometimes!!
      So the actual outcome or definitive end for these characters is kinda irrelevant in comparison to that nugget of info imo
      I find endings like these a billion times more inspiration and deeply calming than any “definitive” ending where it’s revealed shigella married tsubomi and is 100% completely fulfilled forever now or something any day
      I don’t care about any of that, that was never the point of the story, it doesn’t matter if reigen ever put dimple on a leash!
      It’s honestly a similar reason as to why I loved the bojack horseman ending despite similarly not wrapping literally everything up
      The idea that life goes on even when we’re not watching or with someone anymore hits way harder than a finite happily ever after ever could, ESPECIALLY when executed well.

    Theres one interesting detail that you might have missed, Mark. In japan's samurai culture, when the swordman throw away his scabbard, it means that he have no intention to ever sheathe his sword again, which means that he is going to fight to his death. In modern culture, this action was changed to "throw the shoes away" which may indicate a suicide intention. So, in other words, when Reigen threw his shoes away as the song 99 starts playing, he was ready to die. Nothing would stop him from reaching Mob. This makes the scene even more epic.

    I’ve seen several people online say that season 3 wasn’t needed. What confuses me is that season 3 was extremely needed, because it gives something absolutely necessary: a conclusion. It gives closure to the characters and their arcs in the ways that they needed.

    • @eel12333
      @eel12333 Před rokem +81

      I think it's interesting because season two could have been a very shonen conclusion. Like, if it were a typical, action anime it would be a very typical ending; beat up the bad organization and now we're done.
      But mob is a story about these characters and their growth, and they had not fully resolved the characters biggest struggles by the end of season 2, so of course it wouldn't be a proper end for Mob :)

    • @kenethernandez6246
      @kenethernandez6246 Před rokem +43

      Those people honestly haven't thought it through very well. If the show ended in season 2 we wouldn't get closure to multiple character arcs and most importantly we wouldn't get closure to mob's literal goal from the very start of asking his crush out. Idk what people are honestly thinking when they say season 3 wasn't needed.

    Excellent analysis but the one point I disagree with is Teru not winning. He won by saving all those people, he knew Mob would never forgive himself if anyone died so while yes he was fighting to help him, his main fight was to make sure the people were safe not only for their sake but for Mobs.

      Same. I have some friends who try to down play mob as an inferior version of one punch man and ive realized its because they had mostly been watching the show through the lense of what they expect out of a shonen anime. And while i still think the fights and action scenes are 1st class, not merely flashy flashy color spectacles as they see it, that is far from the point of the show. They and many other i think get kind of stuck looking at the plot of mob psycho instead of the story. They havent seen season 3 yet mostly because they thought season 2 concluded “the plot” but i think as time goes on and mob continues to receive its flowers people will come to appreciate this show as a timeless classic in anime and story telling.

    • @protoaltus
      @protoaltus Před rokem +12

      I feel that is something I've grown accustomed to. That is why I recommend it twice. Once when they start to see if they want to start off with a bang or when I know they can appreciate it after being through enough series.
      I guess a similar comparison can be said with Konosuba. That series as a whole for me is one of the best I've seen as a story about characters being real people among unreal environments. It's in the moments of people that memories stay and not in the ruins of a battle.
      And funnily enough, the same friends who didn't like Mob or dropped it halfway through season 1 were also the ones who repeated the same for anime like Jojo, Konosuba and Gintama which are some of my favourites while binging through the shounen hype trains.
      Maybe its just me but Demon Slayer isnt it. It's a heavily flawed story enhanced only by the animation from my experience with the manga. Boku no Hero has a strong base but dwindles halfway through but looks like it picked itself back up in the manga. Naruto is a story about impossible odds and unseen miracles. Bleach is about ones instability. Nanatsu no Taizai is a story about flawed characters in a flawed story done haphazardly sometimes.
      Not that I don't like any of these but i don't seem to have a connection to them except SDS because of phenomenal character writing. They're passing clouds. But they loved it with every inch of their being.
      The ones who heeded my advice and loved Mob and the others? They're the ones who went onto read Berserk and now joke about Griffith while having a solemn look of dread.
      They're fun.
      I guess I'm just someone who loves good writing in general and Mob? One did a fucking fantastic job at a story if I have it on my top with sitting comfortably next to Gintama and Jojo.
      I know it's long and not many will read it.
      So here's a unique piece of information. The only other piece of anime that made me this emotional?
      Steins Gate.

    God I feel this review. As a 30 year old struggling to get where I want to be (and figure out my ambitions after I tried something, and didn't so much as fail as realized it wasn't what I wanted once the reality of what it was hit), the characters of Reigan and Serizawa hit hard and the tie in with Mob-
    The thing is as a kid I was always told I was too loud, too weird, too much. So for years I desperately shoved down all of that, tried to make myself small and quiet and constantly pushed aside myself to make room for others, toning down my big emotional reactions to things (and I mean- not even anger, but joy and curiosity and wonder. People would stare at me oddly when I would gush about sunlight through a tree or a beautiful vista) to try and make FRIENDS.
    And it never worked. Because the moment I slipped up, I would get left behind, and people saw me as fake on top of weird.
    I finally started putting myself out there, tried to pursue my own interests again even while filled with Anxiety- but much like with Serizawa I fell into the wrong group and got taken advantage of in my desperation to find a group who understood. The pandemic helped because it gave me a period to rest, to heal, and gave me time to pursue my own interests not expecting anything- which created deeper ties with some friends and new ones in online DnD groups, through the safety of the internet.
    And now I'm preparing myself for another little step with all the lessons I've learned along the way, and man this anime came at just the right time for me. Getting ready to join some local hobby groups, because though I treasure my friends around the world I want to be a person with a local community as well. And Mob Psycho's theme is blaring on my playlist for the year.

    I feel like I can add a little to what is stated in the last 10 minutes. I lied about how I was doing and how I felt about so much growing up, to some extreme apathy and outright hostility when I did. I hurt myself over it, and still have an incredibly hard time expressing any of it, being emotionally vulnerable and confident in who I am has been the hardest thing I've ever tried to do in my life. I'm not really there yet, as most can already tell I'm kinda overbearing and don't know the boundaries of it all and overshare at the moment, but I'm not going to and can't stop. I've lived too long lying about who I am and how I feel, I've been trying to live my life to the fullest lately, and for that I won't live another day hiding what I feel, it's necessary for myself and the people around me and I implore others to be honest about themselves and their emotions as often as they can, we don't have enough time on this earth to not address it. Please acknowledge and love yourselves, you should be able to rely on others, but from personal experience you can't, sometimes they'll even wish harm on you, so more than anyone else, you need to learn to rely on, and care for yourself.

Unfortunately everyone doesn't have the circle of support that Mob has, but I think it highlights the importance of being able to love yourself. I really wish this sort of thing was focused on more in society.

    I was so waiting for your final review all week long. This story hits so hard to both people who think their time is past due and with people who are afraid to make bad choices its unreal. I'm so glad to have experienced such an amazing story at this point in my life. I'm about to quit my job in order to pursue a dream I though I had no business to pursue at this age.
    I love Reigen so much it breaks my heart he isn't real Q_______Q I want to hug him so bad.

    Reigen's confession had me crying for like, maybe 2 hours. The fact that the show is called Mob Psycho 100 but the series managed to feel like it has multiple MCs, Reigen and Dimple and the way their stories conclude feeling so damn perfect and complete is just wonderful. This series is a 10/10 and I know for a fact it'll blow up in the future and be an instant classic like FMA.

    When Dimple returned to save Reigen I was shocked in the best possible way. I assumed him sending off the "Divine Tree" would be where he left the series. A fitting and bittersweet end. Its astounding that a series could pull off a fake out death and return to this level because i'm so used to that trope, but it was AMAZING

    My friend and I finished Mob Psycho III the other day in preparation for your final video on the series. Haven't started this video yet, but I wanted to talk about what just might be my favorite anime next to Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (ironic that they're both animated by Studio Bones). Mild spoilers for the show, though if you're on this video you likely already know how it ends or don't care about spoilers. This show was deeply moving, incredibly funny, and had some of if not the best action I've ever seen in anime. The arc Mob goes on throughout the 3 seasons and the manga is one I will likely never forget: one of heart, of compassion, of someone who is dealing with something no one else ever could but still striving for normalcy in a society that would unfortunately value the aspect of your character you might want to push to the side. The fact that the last big event of the series is Mob being rejected is such a profound way to end his journey, as the series starts and ends in regards to his feelings for Tsubomi. Because the real meaning isn't his feelings themselves; it's his desire for a normal, happy life. And he ends up getting to live it, even if his crush rejects him and arguably BECAUSE she rejected him. It's something most people have to go through in their lives, and while it is sad in the moment, the sadness reminds us how fortunate we are to have been sad about something as mundane as that. What a perfect ending to a near-perfect show. Props to everyone involved.

    Easily the best, most wholistic story I've ever read in any media. 100 chapters in the manga, concluding in the most beautiful full circle I've ever experienced. The anime did not disappoint. For me, there is nothing better.

    Honestly the finale was perfect. Going into the final episodes 1) I didn't realize the series was ending in like 4 episodes I thought there was another season and more episodes in this season 2) When I realized it was winding to the series finale I was curious how they were gonna wrap it up was Ritsu or Reigan going to be the one to stop him or Tsyomi? And the way One did it was absolutely perfect on every level. When he teared up from rejection my heart swelled and my eyes got glassy. When the series finishes with Shigeyo laughing truly laughing for one of the only times in the anime I started crying cause I was so happy for him.

    I hear that you use Made in Abyss music pretty often, I’d love to see a video on it from you. You make amazing essays which I listen to while working! (I am an animator for japanese anime, so its always astounding to see how much knowledge you have in my field)
    Amazing job, thank you very much!
    Edit:
    I too was left stranded, I got out of architecture college after 3 years to pursue animation. I saw my friends graduate and become successful while I am just starting my career. But I couldn’t be more proud of the person I became because of my choice to follow my true self.
    I proved myself and my family wrong. I hope everyone can grow and become a person they can be proud of.
    Keep growing and taking small steps, everyone :)

    I think my favorite detail is how athletic Mob is by the end of the series. He's shown doing all the things he couldn't at the start, and he's shown to be happy. It's really touching and inspiring.
