I love the fact that Gohan sticks to the original plan after achieving his beast form. He knew he was far more powerful than Cell max, but still ended it quickly with a single blow to his weak spot. Didn’t let the power get to his head like he had done before
he was about to, but Piccolo's action snapped him out of it.
@@PathBeyondTheDark I do hope they stop with the "gohan gets angry and becomes stronger again". In DBZ this was because he always had potential that was unlocked (initially SSJ2, later on the Mystic power up). To continue having him rely on anger to get a powerboost is just... weak now. They did it in Resurrection F, the Super anime, and now they do it here again... a few times even. I'd rather the writers make a choice: either Gohan quits training but remains at his level (mostly), OR he actually does keep training but not in secret (like, why would he, not to mention anyone on earth could sense his ki).

One thing I loved about this movie was that they drew Gohan’s eyes correctly. Thank god. Also blood. The return of blood is nice
That was my biggest gripe in Dragonball for sooooo long. They kept giving him the yamcha/Vegeta eyes as if he was in his ultimate form yet he was in base

The reason for the blood is the anime is on an earlier slot more suitable for children, but being Japan, they have weird inflexible fixations that must be applied to the entire franchise.

I like how Pan is so caring to Piccolo as well, with her being closer to him already than Gohan is even with all they went through. Piccolo deserves to be treated better than Gohan treated him in this movie.

For me, the single best and most emblematic part of the film was when Krillin told Piccolo to grow big like he did back in Dragonball, and Piccolo was like "Oh yeah, I forgot I could do that." Because it pretty much sums up how big and long-running Dragonball/Z/Super has gotten, and how the film was just out to have some fun with it again.
Hell, why remember a move that never worked and only hurt you, I don't blame him XD
now if only they could bring back Launch in the next one :) Especially if she shows up on the arm of Tien Shinhan :p
It's literally cus the creator constantly forgets his own characters. He was a legend and I hope he's at peace but let's not pretend he was amazing at writing his own characters.
I think one aspect of the film that sub-watchers might have missed is that in the Dub, Piccolo addressed Pan’s teacher by name (“Sorry you had to see that, Janet.”) which I find to be a tremendously clever way of subtly implying how often Piccolo has picked up Pan from school in the past.
I like how she wasn't too shook by Pan, a child, bodying a massive hulk of meat in the blink of an eye rofl

My favorite fact about this film is the fact that in the English dub, Magenta is voiced by Charles Martinet, the voice actor for Mario. Yes really.

It's a shame how he was put to the side for the Mario.
If Charles Martinet was voicing Mario and Luigi in the new Mario movie, all my complaints about the trailers would magically disappear

As a father.... I loved Gohan's transformation.
Parents get complacent with the health and safety of their kids sometimes- and all it takes is that one split second that you think your kid is in danger, or missing, that something awakens inside you.

That’s kinda why I disagree with his assessment of the transformation. Gohan is a Dad now. That changes you as a person. the fact that Gohan released that beast but still maintained his control is a big sign of his growth as a human. It makes sense that the Beast deep within him is clawing it’s way back out but is being controlled by the now very mature Gohan is very poetic in my opinion and poignant to the story of Gohan himself.

The first 30 minutes were honestly some of the best content in the entire series and i stand hard on that
Piccolo getting the spotlight was exactly what i wanted. His characterization was flawless.
Piccolo is the best he'd been since the Cell saga, and Pan is the cutest cinnamon roll. I adored the two together.
That much, I will agree with, even if I think the overall film left a lot to be desired.

The biggest thing missing from the movie was another 10 minutes of Pan/Piccolo interactions.

Honestly after this movie I *just* want more Pan. She's an astoundingly likeable character in this film, humble, friendly, steadfast, strong, and un-jaded, and I hope we get to see more of her growing up and becoming a defender of Earth in her own right, perhaps alongside Uub or whatever? Yes of course she's only 5 or whatever here so maybe she just hasn't had time yet to develop "undesirable" character traits (such as her father's penchant to become overconfident whenever he attains his arguably-bullshit-in-most-cases power boosts, her grandfather's taste for grandstanding, or her other grandfather's fightsexuality), but I hope she never does and grows up to become someone everyone in that universe can be proud of.
It also helps that she's voiced in Japanese by one of my favorite VA's.
My girlfriend has never seen Dragon Ball. But, she went with me to see Super Hero in theatres. She loved it. And she even asked me to watch the WHOLE series. We watched all of Dragon Ball OG together, and I think in due time we’ll watch Z. I’m so excited and happy that this movie was able to bring one of my favorite franchises into her life. ❤️

I think the biggest thing people miss is that. This is the first time since Ssj2 that he didn’t let the power get to his head. He ended it right away with the move he’s actually been training to use.
He actually let it get to his head until Piccolo snapped him out of it

I think the biggest issue with Gohan is how little time we actually get to see him struggling or failing. Ssj2 had all of Z to show Gohan building up to that climax of his character. Now we get told what his issue is and he gets thrown into a massive problem where he has to snap to solve it.
Yea that's one of the hundreds of reasons as to why I hate this movie
I kinda liked the idea that Ultimate Gohan was Gohan's final form and he didn't need to transform anymore.
@TvRF i Personally love it .. back in 2015 when DBS Anime was airing.. if someone would've said to me that Gohan and Piccolo would've a new transformation in 2022 and a movie would be made having those 2 as the main characters then i would've laughed.. I'm just happy it happened.. the writers haven't cared about anyone apart from Goku and Vegeta bcz those two bring most of the money .. so atleast they're using all the side characters in this movie and have written a pretty decent storyline
@JustMe One of the reasons I dislike this film is how Piccolo is written. He manipulated Gohan through his own daughter! I know she agreed to it, but it was still his idea. I am sorry, but Gohan should have cut ties with Piccolo after this incident.

He's literally doing what chichi forced onto him. As a kid he really did not like studying but insisted many times on helping out the fighters instead. He wanted to be close to goku. That's what he wanted. Gohan is like this because goku stayed dead for 7 years and he let go of that side of himself. He is still a saiyan... When he becomes powerful his biology does shine through and he loves toying with opponents.

Gamma 2 appeared. Was the best character in a long time. Made me shed tears of sadness and then sealed himself as such an incredible character.
Idk why everyone says that. It must be the anime only fans talking, cuz Merus and Granolah are way cooler than Gamma 2 imo. They also are more interesting and have more unique fighting styles and abilities.
@@ligerade3536 Nah I'm caught up with the manga and Gamma 2 is still 10× better than Merus and Granolah. Are they all cool characters? Yes. Do they have the energy and emotion that Gamma 2 can bring out? No, not even close. The sacrifice of Merus wasn't even sad tbh and then he came back right after the fight anyways. Gamma 2 committed to that shit even though he knew he couldn't be revived. Gamma 2 is definitely my favorite new character of recent.
Beerus and Zamasu for me still tops it when it comes to best new modern dragon ball characters (Broly aswell if you count him), but Gamma 2 was very well done.
@@regitriotrio5656 Nah, Merus and Granolah are way better than Gamma 2. I honestly don't get the hype over Gamma 2, all he did was sacrifice himself. He was cool for sure, but first of all, Merus had a WAY better and more meaningful sacrifice. Merus was an angel who defied his purpose and what he was made for just to show goku what true justice is. And Merus was more interesting and multi-faceted than Gamma. Same with Granolah who had a cool fighting style, reasonable motivations, and almost sacrificed himself to kill vegeta and then reduced his own life span even more to beat Gas.

What I *love* about this film, is that it felt more like a 'Z' film than a 'Super' one. It was only the scenes on Beerus' planet that reminded me that this was a 'Super' story. It just legit felt like 'Z'. The Red Ribbon Army, Piccolo and Gohan, #18 having P.T.S.D. from Cell, the first five minutes of the film giving us a little backstory... Everything was just pure nostalgia.

It's like theyre taking a 180 with the tone of Dragonball which will go back around 180 with the next arc if we have it animated. But nowadays, everyone is taking it as seriously as possible, but that's lead to them ditching and unique techniques having unique effects, and story telling DURING THE FIGHTS WITHOUT THE USE OF DIALOGUE. Dragon ball, og dragon ball could still tell most of it's story with any writing. Especially the important stuff. But super doesn't have that at all really. Like literally, it relies on explaining things rather than showing. Take ultra ego for example. Instead of just having them fight and slowly reveal that Vegeta is just getting stronger as he takes damage, they STOP FIGHTING TO EXPLAIN A BASIC IDEA, BRO WHY? If this is what it takes to relearn how to tell a story through actions instead of words, I'll take it
It did not feel like a z movie at all. There were no emotions, feeling and seriousness in the movie and was the worst dbs film. It felt like a bad cell saga with bad storyline and bad character writing and lack of seriousness.
9:58 the way he holds the phone and scratches the window to get Gohan's attention is so good. I love seeing the character details too
I'm glad you like Orange Piccolo too. It gets some hate, but I personally love it. Piccolo is usually calm and has a slim design, but him suddenly taking on a towering, bulky form and able to one-shot one of the Gamma brothers was so refreshing. It beats the absurd number of Saiyan hair-color transformations any day, at least imo.
I just kinda prefer ultimates more simplistic design, plus I'd prefer the name "super piccolo" rather then "orange piccolo".
Idk why they didn't just have him use ultimate to overpower gamma 2.
@@projekttaku1 I think Super Piccolo was kinda the Piccolo that fused with Nail. It was either Super Namekian or Super Piccolo iirc. Calling this new form Super Piccolo might be too similar I think. But using the colors as names are dumb, but it's what's been happening.... Super Saiyan Red, Blue, Golden Frieza, Black Frieza etc. Lazy but it's canon I guess.
I truly wish that some way along the lines, Frieza can unlock a form that he names "Emperor Form" which will be his ultimate form lol.

@@projekttaku1 eh I think he should have been named "beast piccolo" because he generally looks like a monster in his new form which is why I like it so much.
In Latin America, Gohan voice died in 2020. In those two years before the movie, we didn't know who would be Gohan's New voice. Luckily, fans were listened and they selected the new voice actor we wanted.

I do hope we get more Pan and Bulla scenes as they grow up. Have them actually get a character arc at some point would be nice.
I kinda like the idea of the two being best friends, despite being polar opposites. Pan enjoys fighting, training, and doesn't mind getting dirty while Bulla prefers shopping and fashion and abhors anything that might get her dirty or mess up her clothes.

I loved Piccolo in this movie. his journey of discovering that he was a hero after trying so hard to get someone else to be one (Goku and Vegeta, Gohan, etc) with his Orange form just hit different. Korin, Yajirobe, Dende, Krillin and even Gohan expressing belief in him just... yeah
I love the storey I just don't like the CGI I hope that this isn't a sign of things to come for dragon ball z

I just had the realization that Gohan was wearing weighted clothing while he was doing his research and for that to MEAN ANYTHING it would have to be so heavy there’s no way that chair Gohan’s sitting in would be able to take it. Gohan’s just doing squats the whole time to save that chair or it’s the Legendary Super Sitter.
Maybe that was the secret training he was doing. That'd be a really funny idea for a comic now that I think about it..
I love how skinny Gohan looks. He looks small and unassuming, perfect for Gohan's personality. When he gets mad, his muscles grow a lot and he looks so much more threatening

This is a Dragon Ball movie, not a Z or Super movie. Once you realize that, this plot becomes way more emotionally understandable. Down to Orange Piccolo being a visual callback to the "Demon" aesthetic. This movie is a story about growth itself.
I love when you can see Gamma 2 in the background of a scene just quietly goofing off. Trying to crack people up during boring team meetings is a very, very relatable character trait for me. I also love how the whole thing has a very "Marvel Team-Up" arc of having the good-guys be deceived into fighting each other, but with a slight subversion of Dr. Hedo fully realizing he's on the wrong side and just being in denial about it.
Pan is FUCKING ADORABLE in this. And also a tiny badass. Also it's nice to see a black person drawn like a human being in Dragon Ball.
Absolutely top tier cute. A tiny child with the power to body almost everyone there, and having fun as she pretended to be kidnapped. Also glad she was there with what was effectively parental supervision.

The reanimated moments from DB and DBZ at the start of the movie looked beautiful, and I think that's the style the DBS TV anime should take if it returns.
The guy behind the reanimation of those scenes and the animators from the Broly movie will be working on Super's animation when it returns

I believe that the Beast transformation has a bit of a different symbolism here. The Super Saiyan 2 tranformation was him fully awakening the saiyan in him, while Ultimate was his human side. So the Beast transformation is a combination of the 2 sides and his final form, so to say.
Yeah, Dragon Ball definitely has a good track record of letting final forms be final forms

As an artist, can I say that the whole drawing Gamma 2 thing is so on point? I felt the exact same way after watching the movie
I'm surprised Mark didn't notice the comparisons being made between the gammas with one being too laxed (goku) and the other being too serious (Vegeta). their colors were the saiyans colors too (one red and one blue) although swapped between the two. Also, if you squint your eyes hard enough youcan see that #2 had 2 spikes similar to how gokus hair splits, and #1 has a single spike similar to how vegetas is one big spikey spike

Here's my take on Gohan: While it is frustrating to see him going bath and forth, struggling to find the balance in his life. Its more real, more human than most character arcs.
Real people aren't like story characters. We don't have a moment of awakening, and suddenly everything is perfect forever. We have moments of brilliance, and we TRY to hold on to those, but sometimes, it's hard. We backslide. We revert to what we know. What is easy. What is comfortable.
In Gohan's case, he goes too far. His life has no balance. He almost acts like he isn't neurotypical, even for a Saiyan or a Human. Look at the beginning of BDS: SH. He's locked in his room researching, working so much, he neglects not just his training, but his own family. Piccolo clearly sees this. After all, HE is the one cleaning up the mess.
Gohan NEEDED a wakeup call. and while we can all hope it 'sticks' part of me feels like he will just go back to his old ways as soon as he is allowed to be comfortable again (Or when its convenient for the plot)
Gohan's identity as a character is rooted in his back and forth with himself and others. What this film really showed was Gohan coming to terms with himself more than anyone else. It's a very Human idea and in my opinion Beast is a really good conclusion to the Arc that started in the Cell Saga. Gohan for the longest time was in a war with that side of himself and in a war with his Heritage. Super Saiyan 2 was what happened when Gohan completely gave into his Saiyan Side and lost himself in the power. Ironically enough becoming just like who he never wanted to be. From that Point Gohan never felt the same because that was when his struggles became fundamentally different from Goku and Vegeta.
When he became the Great Saiyaman people often forget that Gohan always was that closet nerd but he never got the chance to explore that previously. It was a period where Gohan was growing up and his human side suppressed the Saiyan. When Gohan became Ultimate that was his acceptance of his Saiyan Side but he ultimately fell into the same place he did previously. It was a cycle that kept continually putting him on the sidelines just because the man didn't want to be a Fighter.
Gohan never wanted to fight, he hated it. So retiring and finding his own inner peace seemed like the right call, but again Gohan was just trying to make excuses. Goku and Vegeta are strong enough to do it so why should Gohan? In putting both Gohan and Piccolo in a situation where they can't run away and they can't back down, it finally brought an end to that struggle for Gohan. That snapping moment when he goes Beast was Gohan finally accepting that he can't go back. Accepting that he's not Goku and Vegeta, but he'll be damned if anyone takes anything more from him. Not like Cell, not like Buu, he'll be the one to finish it. Beast is in a way Gohan finally reaching the point where it's not just his Saiyan Side pushing him. It's his more Human Potential Unlocked Form with the Primal Instincts of his Saiyan Side. Beast was always there, but for Gohan it was always one or the other.
It was never fight as a Human and a Saiyan it was always either or. In this case Gohan is using Potential Unlocked but with the Awakened Saiyan Instincts of a Great Ape in a form that is Exclusive to Gohan's situation and life experience. That's my interpretation of the form anyways. Just as Orange Piccolo is the manifestation of Piccolo coming full circle, Beast is Gohan's character coming full circle and finally accepting himself.

But then i remembered thats just how gohan always got stronger(through emotional stress) not training like goku or vegeta. Along with him never liking fighting. I can let the "reusing" slide after i considered both those things.
Fair enough , but you can’t really compare something like “being lazy to work” and “I have to go to the gym every once in a while or else the entire planet will blow up” these are fictional characters in the end of the day , a character being humane doesn’t make him good , it makes him humane , these guys are from a universe that aliens and dinosaurs exist

I actually love that Cell Max did a laser attack like Shin Godzilla's. Really shows that he is more of a kaiju than an villain.
To be honest, I actually think it does make sense that the red ribbon leadership would be discussing their plans when piccolo shows up. Considering it had been the first time one of their new androids had gone to fight one of the main characters. As well as Magenta constantly pushing Dr Hedo to finish cell max. I think it actually makes perfect sense that they would end up talking about cell max when gamma 2 got back. I know it's all for the sake of plot progression, but personally I didn't bat an eye when they laid out their plans in front of piccolo.
Just from these clips, the way Gamma 1 seems to return to an upright "at attention" position between his movements gives him a really distinctive flair. He looks like a soldier.

I think Gohan's questioning if something bad could really happen taps into his arrogance. When he fought Buu and Cell he let his arrogance take over and ended up messing up/losing. But while Gohan may be training, he may not be learning. Every time he messes up or fails, someone is there to either help him or pick up the slack and save the day. I could see how Gohan would become complacent in this cycle of losing and winning.
I feel cheated every time he’s on the screen. His Z arc was awesome but everything after that…just makes what ever struggle Goku and Vegeta made meaningless.

Personally, I enjoyed the Beast Gohan transformation and the narrative that came around it in the film. I think Gohan, being only half Saiyan, embraces so much of his human side because he spends most of his life embracing that side of himself. If you think about it, Gohan only really seriously trains or fights for about 5 or 6 years of his life. Chichi always made him take his studies as first and foremost and it remained that way up until this point. The complacent human side of him is fine letting Goku, Vegeta, and even Piccolo deal with the big threats. But now, as a father and in these moments, it's the human side of his feelings that push him to the next level. He doesn't encapsulate Saiyan pride the way Goku and Vegeta do, but he does show that his heart can be his greatest strength.
Considering Goku and Vegeta both now get their respective 'super' super form (because getting a literal god form still doesn't make Goku enough of a God Mode'ing whore, apparently), I think it's fair Gohan gets his own individual super super form. And I think doing it as a call back to him back in Cell Saga where he was closest to achieve his max potential is the best way to do it. So yeah, I'm personally in the camp of loving Gohan Beast transformation.

Yes, but that would imply that, because he is giving up time to train for time to being more "human", that he also must give up aspects of his physical strength. Yet, here he is, stated to be stronger than both goku and vegeta, very conveniently staying strong while even Gohan himself stated that he was slacking off on his own training.

What I really like about orange piccolo is that unlike more recent transformations which retain more speed and agility, orange piccolo goes for more of a bulky tank esthetic
About Orange Piccolo breaking away from the paradigm of "conventionally attractive" (?) shonen transformations, I think it's also something that makes sense considering that Namekians simply have a different physiology from that of humans. The bulkiness and wider chin, etc. makes Piccolo look more like a fantasy orc, conveying its raw power.

@@nocknmae most of the time I didn't really have a choice. I'm in Ireland and here the real only animes on were Dragon Ball z Kai and ultimate muscle and even then they were random episodes. The other way of getting more Dragon Ball stuff was through the games like Burst limit. Nowadays with online shopping and more comic shops in cities the option has finally become a option. Mark convinced me to check out the Moro and Granola arcs with ease.

It's just nice that we finally got an arc where Goku & Vegeta didn't take center stage. Piccolo and Gohan's dynamic was always one of my favourite moving parts of Z's narrative. Seeing them both steal the show is already enough to sell me on a viewing. Red Ribbon was a pleasant surprise and letting their build-up throughout the movie breathe, it made for a compelling main villain and a tragic trio of new heroes.
Super's Pan was just a bonus. She was a delightful rendition of the character and I'm excited to see how she grows into the cast going forward. Doubly so if it means Gohan will also start being more of an active participant in the story. Hopefully the creepy deer stay away in this continuity.
I think the reason why Gohan needs to power up this way is because he's the only one of the group who isn't a fighter first. He's a father and academic first. He can't enter the headspace of being a fighter first unless something forces him to snap into it.

Personally, I really loved this movie! At the moment it’s my second favorite of the Dragon Ball movies behind Broly. I just loved seeing side characters get the spotlight once more, especially Gohan! Had some classic Dragon Ball vibes to it too at times and the slice of life moments were entertaining enough for me. The 3D looked really good as well imo, although I of course would have preferred 2D. Overall it was a great movie imo 👍

Unfortunately my theater wasn’t the most hype nor did it get a massive reaction, but in terms of watching and enjoying a film, I’d definitely agree. Right I just saw this movie yesterday and I enjoyed it, it's was good seeing broly being part of the series now, plus it's was good seeing pan and watching Gohan becoming beast Gohan in the se way he became ssj2, it's would be better then that moment but it's was a great moment, it's was also good watching piccolo get a new transmission,
What I really enjoy that nobody talks about at all is that not a single character in the Cell Max fight hesitated to attack the head despite knowing they will die in the process, which isn’t too uncommon in Dragon Ball but still a really good touch
A complaint I do have with the fight is that Goten and Trunks didn't go Super Saiyan against an opponent that both Piccolo and Gohan were going all out for. They really could have died here.

I think Beast form represents the reclaiming of Gohan's former glory. Sure, it looks like something we've seen before, but I believe it's also more than that. The choice to give him white hair makes me personally think it could represent experience. The elderly often have white hair if any at all, and a common saying is "experience comes with age". I believe it shows that Gohan has not only grown past his youth, but now understands what can be learned from it at the same time. Hopefully that makes sense. Idk. I think the use of Piccolo's technique represents how much he really looks up to Piccolo even now, but that's probably obvious.
I think the idea of Beast Gohan is regression in itself. Remember what the point of Ultimate Gohan was? For Gohan to have his full power available without transforming. As Elder Kai said "Transforming isn't all it's cracked up to be. Gohan had the power in him all along." Now that Gohan has to transform to do that we are taking away what made him unique.
That's what Modern Dragon ball has become, is just to sell Merch but you gotta admit he looks so fucking cool.

"Ultimate" made him arrogant and lazy because like how Goku really can't use SSJ3 still and Vegeta skipped it. All of them had to branch off of SSJ2. Beast is going into what Gohan needed to do accept his own power instead of being carried by the past. He was awakened twice and never really trained like most of the cast.

Super Saiyan 4 is greatly written. The idea of tapping deep within your ancestry and utilizing it to your advantage is a good concept itself. The callback to the Oozaru is also nice as it gives it even more development and detail rather than forgetting it entirely. It feels earned as a transformation and is nearly up with Super Saiyan as one of the best transformations in Dragon Ball imo.
I think this is just about my favorite Dragon Ball movie. Yeah, the "Monster" at the end was a bit disappointing, but I think the rest of the movie really made up for it. It really felt like the people who made this movie really love Dragon Ball. Like they had this fun idea for a movie, but then at the last second was like "Wait we still need an end-of-movie battle. Shit."
Also I can't tell you how much I love the fact that Piccolo is just on a first-name basis with Pan's teacher, or that he's basically just her third cooler grandpa. He and Pan made this movie so fun and I loved it so much.
As much as some people hated the idea that Perfect Cell would return and it would be bringing a Villain back from the dead... I was so disappointed not to hear the iconic snide remarks and over confidence of cell from the English dub - this time Cell having a grudge to settle. Overall it was still good but man I would have loved to see old cell again.
That's the thing. Cell being a big dumb monster actually worked for the narrative because the arc's conflict was never with them, but Pan and Piccolo trying to make Gohan wake up. To introduce a third act, fully-fledged character probably wouldn't have worked well given the Gammas were already characterised.
I remember talking to some people next to me and immediately hearing "I really like 'monster' better when he talks". It really did stick out like a sore thumb.
i honestly like the big bulky orange piccolo like most other dbz transformations are just small colour pallet changes having something with a different body build is a breath of fresh air
I appreciate that Gohan has a more realistic emotional journey compared to most other characters. He's been repeatedly traumatized as a child by universe shattering events, watching his friends and family die over and over and being forced to put his own life at risk to fight nearly endless threats, because everyone he cares about tells him he's the strongest and he has to do it, regardless of how he feels about it. His only friend only bonds by fighting and training. He develops a detached-avoidant personality and is in denial about the dangers of the universe because his brain just needs a break. In this movie he is forced to confront that aspect of himself to save his daughter and his friends and realizes that he can overcome his anxiety by taking control of the situation. I agree that the visual style of his transformation is off-the-mark, but character-wise it is exactly what needed to happen for him to psychologically rejoin the Z fighters at the same level he was in the Cell Saga
The issue is he doesn't seem to learn ever. He has seen the consequences of his slacking many times and continued to do nothing. Since even the cell saga , he saw his dad die and it was his fault and him being the new strongest fighter should have put something in his mind to train.
Then in the buu saga he saw his lack training cause the release of Majin buu and when got his powerup , he screwed around again in the same way against cell and the same result with it blowing up in his face.
During the revival of frieza , he could barely turn super saiyan and caused piccolo to die again protecting him.
All of these events are on him yet he didn't change, frieza even blew up the earth killing his family and he still didn't learn?
My take on the whole situation:

His reluctance to discuss these endeavors with his father stems from a fear of jeopardizing their relationship, knowing that Goku's dedication to fighting is a central part of his life. This fear triggers a cascade of emotions, compelling Gohan to train in secret, concealing the true motivation behind his scholarly pursuits. Piccolo's misunderstanding of his endeavors, the staged kidnapping of his daughter, and his family and friends getting hurt in the battle with Cell Max (with Piccolo's perceived death being the final straw) is what finally breaks him and causes him to unlock his Beast form. This eventually comes to head in my fic where he's finally faced with the reality and has to confront his dad about this whole ordeal and ultimately, this leads to the creation of the ki book featured in Dragon Ball Online.
DB lost its in-universe logic ages ago. This movie is like “I’ll create androids more powerful than majin boo, be right back”. 🙄
Seeing the red ribbon army make a comeback was nice, they are some of the classic villains after all. I also really like the gammas, they’re not really bad guys but they’ve been misguided and eventually find their way into the light. They’re fun characters with their dramatic poses and visible sound effects. Then there’s beast gohan and orange piccolo, pretty cool forms and seeing piccolo use his stretchy arms again with gohan using the special beam cannon was really cool to see
yeah, I love american superheroes so I always love flashy superheroes with capes, and their opposing personalities work great.
I don't really like beast gohan despite it being canon gohan blanco, it feels unnecessary with gohan using the makankosappo near instantly is enough fanservice for me.

One of the strongest guys in the universe who has no interest in hurting others and just wanting to live his best life with his loving family and contributing to the academics practically writes itself.
He also didn't need another form. Potential unleashed is so classy and understated. Now he's just another wacky Saiyan with big hair and all the colors.

One of my favorite things about Super Hero is all the little dialogue touches. Namely, the character referring to Piccolo as either King Piccolo or Kami. In a way, it's all set up for Piccolo coming into his own with his Shenron backed power up and Orange form.
I liked that little detail too.
Shows that, despite not being talked about as much anymore, the atrocities of Demon King Piccolo's invasion still left a mark on the collective subconscious of the human inhabitants of Earth, just as much as the Cell Games or Buu's global massacre did.
Orange Piccolo's design was perfect for me.
1. Not every fransformation needs to be a hair color change.
2. I love how he looks more square and brutish to emphasize the HUMONGOUS strength he's aquired with his Orange Form.

A easter egg I absolutely loved seeing was that Pan when running to kindergarten was running the same way Arale does in her brief appearances in dragon ball and in doctor slump.

I would have loved it if "Beast Gohan" was actually just melding his Ultimate form and his Saiyan abilities. To me, he's always been a character of two minds. As a "human", he is timid and mild, but when pushed he's Saiyan side comes out, powerful but brash. I see this in his transformations. Base Gohan has black hair, SSJ has the gold hair, same with SSJ2. But when he goes beyond into "Ultimate", he goes back to black hair, he can't maintain the Saiyan aspects and the human aspects. They are fighting within him, working against each other than with.
Thesis and Antithesis.
A new transformation could be explained by the two aspects finally coming together, the synthesis. He would no longer be a boy with poor control of his emotions, capable of explosive bursts of power, but a man that understands that these are two sides of the same coin. It would be a form born not from a lack of control like his previous Saiyan forms, but from complete control.
I always viewed Gohan Beast as being the ultimate acknowledgement of that side of Gohan. You're right, it is that side of him we saw in Cell, that deep warrior spirit that showed up. And Gohan has been spending this entire time since trying to bury that side of him. He stopped training post-Cell, stopped training post-Buu, finally trained for the ToP and then kept training in secret. But he tried to do it his own way, in a way that was separate from the warrior spirit. But then he saw what that ended up doing. He was right back to being a boy watching Cell about to rip away and destroy everything he loved and cared about. And it made him snap and realize he couldn't just hide and run from that warrior, that Saiyan part of him.
Least to me, Beast Gohan is the marriage of Ultimate Gohan (human) and SSJ2 Gohan (Saiyan) and the realization by him that he needs to use BOTH to protect what he loves.
TLDR: Gohan has been fighting his anger/Saiyan side. He tried to move away from it and focus on his Human side, but he now knows he can't do that. He HAS to accept his anger/Saiyan side, and has to use both to move forward and protect what and who he loves.
This is a solid explanation.
A character who has a similar trait is Dante from the Devil May Cry series. Think of Sin Devil Trigger as Dante's beast form
The design of Beast represents that very well too. His hair is more streamlined than most super saiyan forms, and represents him being focused, and not letting his arrogance get to him like it did during cell & buu.
The whiteness of his hair showing how he's evolved past super sayian (duh) and even ultimate, complimented with the red highlights of his eye color & red lightning, it's still the same warrior that absolutely bodied cell so long ago, but this time, it's not a dumb predator, but a smart, cunning, even calculating predator who won't waste its time. It's honestly scary.
Not to mention the aura resembles ultimate, the lightning is obviously inspired by SSJ2, etc etc.
It's a very well thought out form that while yes, does harken back to Gohan during cell saga for better or worse, is imo PERFECT for his character at this point

Orange Piccolo actually reminds me a lot of what people thought a Namekian God would look like.
Piccolo and Pan are legit an adorable duo that im thrilled there was more of.
I thought i would have more issues with this movie after id seen the trailer, but it was reeeeeeeally nice to not have a Goku-centric story for a change.
Even though the final showdown in the movie is something no Dragon Ball Z fan is a stranger to, they found a way to change it up enough to have it be interesting.
I personally believe that the Orange Piccolo form is from Shenron allowing Piccolo to tap into his inherent divine ki. Beerus states that only those with divine ki can sense divine ki and Piccolo was able to sense Shin's power in the tournament during the Buu arc.
Beast Gohan is such a weird step up for Gohan. I always thought the best route for Gohan would be for him to awaken his heart, instead of his body. Like, Elder Kai released the potential of his body, but Gohan needed to be in the right mindset and truly be one with himself to use it to his max. I don't know if seeing Piccolo die would do that. I'm curious how the manga will depict this transformation, if it even does.

Gohan’s character finally reached a point that felt natural and what DB needed because of the work he put in with Piccolo before the ToP to make sure his emotions were in check, that they were there to compliment, and not shackle or get in the way. Thank the Lord that he still finished the job here. I think also I’m just not feeling the form because his Ultimate form fit him perfectly. He fit the mold of being strong without the need of a transformation or new look if you will. I don’t know man. Still trying to warm up to the form

I think movies are always going to struggle a little to justify new transformations within their short run times compared to the average series arc. Typically in the anime we see a new transformation maybe once every other arc or so, but there's this expectation that each new movie has to show off something new, and I think it always feels a little contrived. In that respect, both Orange Piccolo and Beast Gohan feel a little cheap and unearned to me.
But I like the idea of getting to see Piccolo and Gohan take the centre stage for once, getting to fight side by side and show how strong their relationship is and in that respect, as a representation of how far they've grown and what they can achieve together, even if the movie struggles to find time to really build up their transformations, it feels like the characters deserved it, and I'm happy to think of it that way. The entire dragonball series spends so much time focusing on Goku, trying to put emphasis elsewhere briefly, then invariably snapping back to Goku and Vegeta. So many other characters who could've become main characters gradually drift away to secondary roles, and as the cast expands, get less and less time spent on them. Super Hero was a wonderful break from that tendency, to let us have fun with some members of the cast who haven't really been given the focus they've deserved for a long, long time.
I got to see this movie in 4d movie theater in Dallas and it was sick. All the scenes with heavy movement had the seats moving like a rollercoaster arcade machine. Everything about the experience made the movie top tier.
Man oh man, I loved this film. The slice of life, my two favorite characters getting the spotlight and Orange Piccolo just had me wide eyed like a kid again. I love that Piccolo's form almost embodies his technique of growing larger, which he also does later in the film. I also cannot get enough of the Pan and Piccolo dynamic. It's perfect.
IF dragonball ever moves forward in the timeline to where they are shifting focus on newer characters as the originals age, then Pan has to be the chosen one. If they make that decision, it'll actually be a fix for what they did to Gohan. And got to say, seeing a female lead in Dragonball would be a surreal experience.
Also, with Gohan asking about the probability of him needing to fight... I actually thought that was an amazingly human moment of him. He was keeping up with his training, but almost lying by omission to Piccolo. Like the horrors of his past won't let him forget but he wants to oh so much. So he trains, but he'll do anything to avoid the actual fight... until he can't, like when his daughter is taken. Honestly though, beast form was totally not needed. Gohan doing the Makankōsappō would have been hype enough for me.
I think my favorite scene in this movie was the one with Gohan powering up and destroying the ground beneath him while the Red Ribbon grunt is freaking the hell out trying to get out of the ever deepening hole, it was just a realistic portrayal of a regular person in a world with random godly powered individuals
I stand by my thinking that super saiyan 4 would've been a much more fitting and satisfying transformation for Gohan to gain instead of beast. It would be equally, if not more hyped than beast and it would make a fan favorite form canon. It is an incredibly fitting form for gohan and even has the same primal themes.
This movie, when I first watched it, highlighted one of my favorite things about Dragon Ball. And that is that time passes, people age, children are born and grow as well and the cycle continues. Sure, Goten and Trunks aren’t exactly becoming dads anytime soon and Goku and Vegeta ain’t getting grey hairs as well, but still it’s an aspect of the story and world that I will always appreciate.
The summarized my thoughts on Gohan's Beast mode perfectly. When I first saw it, I thought "Oh we're just doing Cell again." But the more I thought about it, the more the idea of reserved, frequently detached Gohan having a form that engages the more primal aspect of his being. He's half human and half saiyan, but through most of the show its been framed as Gohan being human, with occasional bursts on Saiyan-ness.
With this form though, he's fully connected with the saiyan half of his lineage, the animalistic desire to fight and prove your power. I know it's farfetched, but I almost think it could be used as an avenue to reintroduce SS4. Like Gohan's Beast mode acting as an imperfect version of it since he's only half saiyan.
I have to disagree. Gohan said he wanted to go his own path away from the Saiyans. Going the path of SSJ4 (whatever it’ll be called possibly in DBS) would go against that.
Toriyama wrote that the Beast form is Gohan’s true awakening (something like that). Like, SSJ2 was just an extension of SSJ, but Beast is really the culmination of all those times he’s always raged.
As for SSJ4, I think Broly should get it. He already has Wrath. Considering what it is, it’s only natural the next step would be SSJ4
You notice that they built up a change in Gohan but didn't follow threw?
There's a theme of Piccolo wanting Gohan to realize that, like Spider-Man, Gohan has great power and from that a responsibility to defend the world. But Gohan believes that he can just wait for Goku. So when things are at their worst and Goku is still not around he goes threw his transformation.
All that was needed was like 2 lines of text to tie it all together.

Honestly I just love that they’re kinda being back parts of old dragon ball and making them relevant again I enjoy it being able to almost relive those moments
Just got finished with the superhero movie & one thing i learn about it is that Piccolo is truly the definition of “father figure” always being there for gohan & now pan it’s beautiful to see especially doing the film the cgi & plot was great & done very well definitely one of my favorite dragon ball movies 👌🏽

I enjoyed every single second. Totally felt like a Toriyama written story from plot points to humor. As a Gohan fan i was very happy that he got a badass form and that climax from Gohan beast to the special beam cannon the animation was fantastic. Color scheme and animation was fabulous.

@@pn2294 I don’t believe so I feel the way he had transformed and acted in the movie was very human. Nobody would instantly just flip a coin and change. ( in this case I’m referring to him training. People aren’t easy to change) his transformation to beast I like to feel is natural. I personally like to picture it as PTSD him fighting a similar enemy that cost him his dad and now possibly everyone he loves just makes him snap. Excellent review, per usual. To balance out things with my thoughts, I *loathed* Beast Gohan when I saw it in the theatre.
I love a good rage boost scene, but my thoughts at the moment were as follows:
"Okay... So he has this new form. Giving it a chance, giving it the benefit of the doubt, what makes this one different to any of this show's other forms? Considering the vast differences in design and battle philosophy with Ultra Ego vs Instinct. Visuals... He is stronger now... And he got a power boost from getting angry... Again. For the umpteenth time, Gohan gets mad because a friend nearly died, and got a power boost.. because he got *really super mad* this time, you guys."
I have warmed up to Orange Piccolo, because at least the form is based on his culture and race, and actually feels like he's unleashed a deeper aspect of being a Namekian. Gohan, got mad, but like *really mad* this time, and won because of it. Gohan was my favourite character for much of Z, but it really seems that the higher ups have no idea what to do with the character at this point. Toyotaro has shown some interest in actually developing the character, which is nice, I just hope that his interpretation is a bit more elaborate than angry = power, which is just a Super Saiyan.
So accurate. It's complete regression. Gohan doesn't need a new form, he needs a new outlook. He needs to decide if he wants to be the one responsible for his and his families safety and do the unpleasant work that entails or if he will merely sit on the sidelines and allow others to decide his fate - to essentially be like Tenshinhan, Roshi, Krillin and everyone else who can no longer truly affect the course of events. Only, for Gohan it would be different because everyone would KNOW that he has the potential to be there, shoulder to shoulder with the people fighting to protect the earth and he CHOSE not to. He shouldn't just pick the path of least resistance every time and get bailed out by another "awakening" or "latent potential".
And as a side note, the design is awful in my opinion. It's a complete rehash of Cell saga SSJ2 but just... overdone. It looks really silly. Like a boy, not a man. Gohan is a husband and father now, and his design shouldn't be based on his 11 year old self. As a personal preference, I like the whole "no transformations" thing that Ultimate Gohan had going. Dragon Ball is just so full of transformations now and I really think that what Gohan needs isn't a new form but a new attitude. There's a lot of other ways to show a power gap than new colours of hair - he could use new techniques, fighting styles, mannerisms etc.
Anyyyyyyway, I could ramble for too long about this but it's nice to see that not everyone just thinks "omg gohan has the SSJ2 bang back, everything is amazing!"
Also on the Beast transformation, I don't know if it's considered canon or not but in XenoVerse 2 everyone can use it. Its not locked to Saiyans or even just Gohan. This has led some to believe that the form is actually Unleashed Potential taken to it's extreme
That would be a neat concept, sort of like how super Saiyan and ultra instinct have a level of mastery to them, the mystic power up can also grow along with the wielder.
Honestly love beast gohan. I agree he grown past what he was but the beast mode is like channeling... the beast... he once had while still being the grown father he has become. Seems like a great balance of what we want from gohan and what chi chi wanted from gohan
I love how Mark reviews the movies in a very in depth analysis to the point that he mentioned how 2D and CGI work was very detailed and had actual hard effort to make an overall 2D manga to make a 3D animation.
I liked how proactive Piccolo was in the movie. He was the one who infiltrated RR, he was the one who thought to unlock his power somehow, he went to Bulma to collect them, he even manipulated the situation a bit to get Gohan in the mix and he came up with the final plan that beat Cell Max. That's the best way to do a hero's journey imo when the protagonist is the one changing the world around him instead of doing everyone else's ideas
Realistically, they just gave in and tried to cram in as many references and callbacks as possible, and Gohan’s appearance is part of that process. He just had to keep his Supreme hair but white and it would have been perfect.

When i saw at the beginning of the movie that Piccolo's pink spots have become yellow, i got nearly teary-eyed. Also one thing i loved is how many times the main cast effortlessly deals with regular humans while having no respect. Like Pan one shotting her kidnapper and Gohan flicking that guy's gun away
40:08 Tbh i think he wonders this mainly for the fact that almost every time something goes wrong, goku and vegeta will be there to fix it so in his mind, he suspects that if something wrong were to happen, then just rely on goku and vegeta instead of taking care of stuff. So to then see him in the movie realizing that goku and vegeta are nowhere to be seen at the fight, he then gets ready to have the fight for his life and is unsure if he could win because every time he has had to fight these battles, he always had the help of goku like when he did the kamehameha against cell, or in the fight against super buu where vegito steps in the buu saga, or when goku and vegeta arrive against frieza, or when goku and frieza team up against jiren. Gohan in the movie (at least from what i see) doesn’t believe in his own abilities to fight and that is clearly shown when powering up while piccolo is buying him time.
They should have used gohan's super hero back ground more. Like I thought it was the obvious call. That would have been a good way to actually get the gamma's on there side more naturally, like there based off his superhero stuff. I hate that, that part of gohan gets shit. I love that part of him. It makes him diffrent but still his goofy self
I think this is my favorite Dragonball movie. Dbs Broly was before this came out. But this one beat it. The comedy, the story, the tone was just my favorite.

I think you summed up my feelings on the new transformation pretty well. I also loved the use of the mankakasopopsicle and all that it implies.
One thing I really liked about the ultimate Gohan form is it felt to me like a nod to the fact that Gohan is half human. He's not like Goku and Vegeta, and his ultimate form shouldn't be just another super saiyan step. Ultimate Gohan felt as though it took the theory of staying in super saiyan that Goku practiced in the Cell arc and took it to its final conclusion - that the ideal form is not a big transformation, but simply learning to harness the full power of your transformations in your normal form. It was taking his saiyan heritage, and fusing it with his human side as well, embracing something that was uniquely him.
Gohan didn't need to transform again, he just needed to kick ass. He needed to find his resolve, embrace his heritage once more and take action.
Much like you, I loved the movie outside of that though. Pan and Piccolo have such a fun and sweet dynamic. I loved a chance for characters besides Goku and Vegeta to shine again, and the Gammas (especially #2) really landed for me.
Having stopped dragon ball after cell, and recently watched Battle of gods, then broly, then this, it feels perfect. The character arcs feel amazing and seem like a real steady arc for gohan, with the idea that after the events of cell he really did just settle down and piccolo thinks he hasn’t trained in a long time. I dunno what they did with gohan during the buy saga or in super but with what you’re saying about his transformation feeling outdated, I’m glad I don’t know, because for the gohan I’ve known and experienced this is perfect.
Super hero was an amazing movie for me where Gohan and piccolo BOTH get to shine something the buu saga failed in an incredible movie which I loved to watch and would rewatch many times
They get shine in a bad way all they do is give them ass pull forms.

Piccolo going to the RR base is not coincidence, they were waiting for Gamma 2 to arrive, he must have phoned during his flight, and they prepped and all.
Dr. Hedo was showcasing the two Gammas, and Magenta just didn't want to hear it and proceed with Cell Max.
It's not coincidence by any chance since it's choice to tail his attacker. The coincidence here is that they need to kidnap pan when he needed to pick her up.
After just recently finishing the OG Dragonball again, this movie definitely took heavy inspiration from the writing and comedy. Back to the roots and I loved it. I do love when Dragon Ball gets serious but I miss the slapstick comedy, and cheesy jokes. This movies really did that with the action of Z and it was wonderful
This movie was, in a word, Fun. I was not expecting to try to stifle laughter to keep from waking others up. The comedy in the first two-thirds of this film was perfect and hit every time, and served to contrast the serious action later on nicely. Pan and Piccolo's relationship was precious, and I would love a spin-off just about them. Orange Piccolo worked so much better in motion than the still images I'd seen before. And Cell Max was a great contrast to the original Cell: a blunt instrument out to destroy everything around him instead of a precision tool with a goal, and Max's tail being a club emphasized that perfectly.
Overall amazing film, can't wait for the english home release

the hand drawn opening sequence is so sick. The android-cell saga is my favourite so seeing it with amazing artwork and animation was fire.
I love this movie so much. Despite the issues is may have its nearly my number one favourite. I love that Gohan and Piccolo got the spotlight and the 3d animation while not as good as 2d was done really well. I Love the new characters. The new forms Gohan and Piccolo get are pretty cool looking for the most part. Also the callbacks and references are really neat. The soundtrack to the movie is really nice too. Plus Pan is adorable, I love how they made her be in this movie and just the bond she has with piccolo is amazing. This was also my first dragon ball movie I got to watch on the big screen and it was such a blast to watch. Been looking forward to this review. I need to type this before I lose myself in your words. So vs Cell the first time he snapped. Then he learned to control his power and reach ssj2 without being crazy. Beast mode is him snapping again but his base form is stronger, so his snap breaks new barriers!

For the ending, I think that Gohan knows all the stuff he goes through, but instead of saying "My life has been Hell, and there is more to come" he says, "My life has been Hell, and now all the pain is over." That is just what I think of the Situation tho. Maybe Gohan thinks that everything bad that could have happened already has happened, and that they finally defeated their last greatest threat which was I think Buu not counting enemies in the Tournament of Power.
45:18 this broke me. I had a great friend on December 6th this year who committed suicide and I miss him so much. And this year has taught me like what Mark said anything can be taken away from you. But it’s the way you pick yourself up, time always moves forward.
