  • John McCririck is one of the most famous horse racing reporters in the world. Known for his unorthodox style and often controversial views John also has a temper to be reckoned with and nothing bothers him more than people trying to interrupt his racing broadcasts.

    McCririck was channel 4 racings booby prize. He was pure entertainment and not the embarrassment I think the new Channel 4 hierarchy thought he was when they got rid of him. He knew betting. And he and the female were actually a good team together. He also had the knack of being unpredictable with people, often blowing his top at people fooling around him. I think he was simply intolerant of it. And why not? He was great fun to watch doing it too. Channel 4 racing needs it's lighter side, and McCririck was just that.

    Channel 4 racing was great with mccririck,francome etc.Now its boring with claire balding turning up whenever she feels like it plus her fellow compatriot from the bbc with no basic interviewing skills.The panellists as well are mundane and dont have the pazass like mccririck and co.Typical channel 4

    For John it wasn't a job it was his life he loved every second of it and it showed through to the viewers at home!

    And the arrogant bosses at C4 wonder why ratings have dropped! McCririck was entertaining!

    There will never be another one like him.

    • @kevvome
      @kevvome Před 8 lety +2

      All he seemed to know about was the betting odds Paul. His knowledge stopped there! He couldn't talk about pedigrees or form or going, just the betting market. He was very limited in his whole approach to the racing game. A buffoon really!

      paul taylor he didn’t need to, betting was his knowledge, there were other people like Jim McGrath who knew all the finer racing details.

  • @christophebonhoefferofbelg9846

    McCririck could be a total asshole at times, but he was never PC & that's what cost him his job in the end. Channel 4 took all the fun away & now we have a nice, safe, but rather dull collection of individuals on TV...

    McCririck was arrogant and an ass at the best of times but he was a great horsey man and a friend to the betting public. The heirs that have surfaced on C4 are not of the same ilk as Francombe , Thompson and McCririck and more is the pity.

      +irishcowboy42 I agree with you about the new boys on Ch.4 Racing but I don't like that new person (thinks he knows it all but fails mostly. He tried to put jim mcgrath down "bully" get him off he doesn't know anything about training "Winners"). " The Ground i.e. Heavy, Soft, Yielding, Good to Soft, Good, Good to Firm. Has a Big part to play in a lot of colts, geldings, mares and filles, chances of Winning a race. A real Good horse should go on any ground but even some of the Top Flat horses like Sea The Stars would now have been ran if the going was Soft.
      Also "Greatest jockey" John Francombe put me off backing The Freak "Frankel" on his first run of his 3 y.o. season. As Frankel was sweating very badly between his "hind legs (back end)". Not down his shoulders/chest area. J.Francombe said (as Frankel was down at the start: "I never seen a horse win that sweated like that". "Win"" Frankel won by 5 whole Lengths going away and the rest is history. Shows J.F. never made it as a Trainer. Better stick to writing novels J.F. or get back in the saddle (remember you were a Junior European (U18) Show Jumping Champion. So maybe start the S.J. again John. Slán

    I remember the old ( ish ) guy in the yellow with the dyed black hair. McCririck lost his cool with him because every meeting that CH4 covered back then in the south of England, that man would appear and he would follow Big Mac every where. The guy was a nuisance. You could say he was a stalker.

    Why did he always choose to stand amongst the riff-raff , every time. John brought it upon himself. Imagine it happening to John Rickman or Peter Moore, (he was just a voice-over) years ago.
