  • This session includes the following lectures:
    1. U.S. Policy in Africa: Opportunities, Challenges, and the Way Forward by Ambassador Dr. J. Peter Pham.
    Dr. Pham formerly served as U.S. Special Envoy for the Sahel & Great Lakes Regions of Africa. In his lecture, Dr. Pham explores the current administration’s strategy toward Africa (or rather the lack thereof), as well as the challenges and opportunities Africa presents for the United States.
    2. Russia’s ‘Return’ to Africa as a Post-Cold War Reckoning by Prof. Maxim Matusevich.
    Prof. Matusevich is a Professor of History and Department Chair at Seton Hall University. In his lecture, Prof. Matusevich explores the history and current state of Russia’s presence and interests in Africa.
    3. France and Europe’s Failed Strategy in Africa by Mr. Cyril Bensimon.
    Bensimon is the editor in chief of Le Monde Afrique. In his lecture, Bensimon gives an overview of France strategy and operations in Africa and why it failed and how it’s image in Africa has dramatically and steadily declined in the last decade. Bensimon also provides useful advice for those who want to engage successfully with their African counterparts.
    4. China’s Involvement in Africa: Contemporary Trends Overview by Sharon Bar David.
    Bar David, a lecturer at Ben Gurion University and an expert on China's presence in Africa, provides a historical overview of China's engagement in Africa. Focusing on infrastructure projects, she explores China's strategy and interests, the aftermath of this engagement, and the current state of China's complex relationship with African nations.
    This session was part of the "Africa and Israel: Building Strategic and Economic Bridges" conference held on July 2, 2024, at Tel-Aviv University. The conference is a collaboration between the S. Daniel Abraham Center for International and Regional Studies at Tel-Aviv University, the Israel-Africa Relations Institute (IAI), and the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security (JISS).
