Boris Buses are being taken off the London streets

  • It's the end of an era in London’s public transport - the Boris Buses are being retired after just 12 years on the streets. These buses were introduced by Boris Johnson when he was Mayor of London, meant to replace the beloved Routemaster. They cost the city a whopping £350 million and were designed by Thomas Heatherwick, the same guy who designed the 2012 Olympic cauldron!
Despite the grand plans, things didn’t go quite as smoothly as hoped. Passengers quickly started complaining about the unbearable heat inside the buses during summer, so they had to be retrofitted with opening windows.
Now, with Sadiq Khan re-elected as Mayor, he’s decided it’s time for a change. He’s aiming to have all 8,600 of London’s buses powered by batteries or hydrogen by 2030.
For a bit of history, the original Routemaster buses were introduced in 1954 and served London until 2005, although you can still catch one on a heritage route in Central London. And if you’re thinking of buying one of these classic buses for yourself, be prepared to spend up to £80,000!

After half a century it was withdrawn from service at the end of 2005 (except for two heritage routes), in favour of a fully accessible one-man-operated modern fleet (including articulated buses), none of which featured a rear open platform. The withdrawal of the Routemaster became an issue during the 2008 London mayoral election with Boris Johnson elected mayor with a campaign pledge to introduce a new Routemaster... The bendy buses weren’t even good for many of the routes they were deemed suitable for, let alone the whole of London - the length meant they frequently got stuck across junctions - does nobody else remember the massive gridlocks in the mid 2000s at places like Cambridge Circus, when they were brought in on the 38? Our streets in central London are narrow and medieval in layout compared to many European cities. And they most certainly were not friendly for the elderly or actually, many people with disabilities, just because they were single deck and had level access for wheelchairs - the number of standing passengers and dire lack of seats made them a poor replacement for the Routemasters (with a conductor to make sure that elderly people, those with limited mobility or blind people got on and sat down before the bus moved. On the bendies I’m sure the driver couldn’t even see where they had gone)! They’re ok for moving lots of able bodied people quickly over a short distance so quite suitable for airport car park shuttles etc.

Surely 'Boris buses' were the awful bendy buses that Johnson introduced, that were totally unsuitable for London's streets. Nobody I know refers to the new routemasters as 'Boris Buses'!

The electric bikes were called Boris bikes, not the busses! I'd say 12 years of service is good going, and it's normal for them to be replaced with electric or hydrogen alternatives. UK is way behind compared to the rest of Europe. Besides, it's a great hypocrisy running these busses in London, whereas other vehicles have to pay eye watering ULEZ charges if they don't meet the emissions threshold.

Mate I’m from Essex which is 15-20 min from London and I can honestly say I’ve never ever heard anyone say “boris buses”

Meanwhile in Sarajevo we still have trams from the 60's operating regularly. Yes, even ones that survived the war

Perhaps install an AC? In summer time in a hot day, these buses are like a heated moving oven and it stinks.

The AEC Routemaster was built in lieu of the Trolley Bus. Sadly L.T. didn't put up wires in the suburbs. So they brought in the Routemaster to run as economically near as possibly to the trolley buses.

The Routemaster's longevity was a lot more to do with the state of London's finances rather than it's inherent superiority.

the huge, heavy and toxic battery packs for huge EVs like buses mean the "emissions reduction" argument is thrown out of the window! that is even b4 factoring in the infrastructure needed (more $$) to support them! e-bike can burn viciously and take out entire flats/shops i shudder to think what a 150-200++ kwh pack could do when it burns!
