Boris Buses are being taken off the London streets

- It's the end of an era in London’s public transport - the Boris Buses are being retired after just 12 years on the streets. These buses were introduced by Boris Johnson when he was Mayor of London, meant to replace the beloved Routemaster. They cost the city a whopping £350 million and were designed by Thomas Heatherwick, the same guy who designed the 2012 Olympic cauldron!
Despite the grand plans, things didn’t go quite as smoothly as hoped. Passengers quickly started complaining about the unbearable heat inside the buses during summer, so they had to be retrofitted with opening windows.
Now, with Sadiq Khan re-elected as Mayor, he’s decided it’s time for a change. He’s aiming to have all 8,600 of London’s buses powered by batteries or hydrogen by 2030.
For a bit of history, the original Routemaster buses were introduced in 1954 and served London until 2005, although you can still catch one on a heritage route in Central London. And if you’re thinking of buying one of these classic buses for yourself, be prepared to spend up to £80,000!
#london #routemaster #sadiqkhan #borisjohnson
this is basically nonsense. the busses are just being replaced to meet emission targets and it will take years. Nothing to do with faults with the busses.
I never said they are being replaced for a fault, the video clearly says they will be replaced for meeting emission targets. The fact about lack of A/C is just a historical fact.
It's deliberately misleading and therefore clickbait.
Yeah. Battery retrofit possibilities mean they might not go anywhere at all so this is just clickbait unfortunately.
You can call any intriguing headline a clickbait then, doesn't make it less true, maybe google it?

I think it's very unlikely that any other operators will be interested in using them when London gets rid of them.

A bus that was light , fuel efficient, easy and inexpensive to maintain.
Battery powered buses will be the exact opposite of those things.
Electric buses are exceptionally fuel-efficient compared to diesel buses. And electric motors are a lot easier to maintain than diesel engines because there are a lot fewer moving parts.
They’re not light, sure, but that doesn’t matter because they have an order of magnitude more horsepower than was possible in the 1960s.
Your comment is wrong and deliberately disingenuous.
Can you imagine the damage these extraordinarily heavy buses will do to the roads.
@@AutoGamerZ_ It seems I'm talking about something you're unfamiliar with, or at least not admitting to. The new diesel-electric Routemaster weighs nearly fourteen short tons, while the Routemaster 8 weighs approximately eight short tons, making the new diesel-electric Routemaster nearly twice as heavy as the old RM8. Because English roads and roads elsewhere on Planet Earth are designed to bear considerably more weight than expected, it does not mean they will not experience more wear and tear by being pounded by heavier battery-operated vehicles. Introductory physics will teach you that.
@@yindee372One of the London buses I travelled on yesterday was powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, according to the publicity on the outside, and it's based at the Perivale garage, according to the publicity inside. I don't know whether the fuel cell produces electricity continuously or whether it intermittently charges a battery but it's good that alternative approaches are being explored.
@@yindee372 It matters that they are not light as they will do more damage to the roads, with all the costs and emissions of repairing them. Volvo elec car cars take 4 times more energy to produce than ICE cars, so this can be transferred to the buses. Then there are the issues scrapping them and recycling the batteries. They have less moving parts than an ICE, but when it comes to repairing them, they are extremely dangerous, and when they do go wrong, they are extremely expensive. Then there is the all the so called green energy that will be needed to power them.
Busses nowadays are only kept for an average of 12-16 years and then they are replaced. It’s standard here in North America as well. Most cities here are also replacing retired diesel vehicles with clean energy alternatives.

@@nygelmiller5293 Not many second hand UK buses were sold to HK for public service. In fact it is more of the opposite, in the 1990s some old HK buses (such as the tri-axle Leyland Olympians) were re imported back to the UK for mostly coach/school bus work as they have high capacity and are air conditioned (Megabus once had a lot and they got sold on to other smaller operators afterwards)

London doesn’t run homogeneous bus fleets. There’s a mix of models in service at any one time. The idea that the routemaster was the main London bus from 1950s to 2000s is completely wrong.
This is what happens when you dont vote.
The original AEC Routemaster was used as the standard London bus type, with a rear open platform and crewed by both a driver and conductor. After half a century it was withdrawn from service at the end of 2005 (except for two heritage routes), in favour of a fully accessible one-man-operated modern fleet (including articulated buses), none of which featured a rear open platform. The withdrawal of the Routemaster became an issue during the 2008 London mayoral election with Boris Johnson elected mayor with a campaign pledge to introduce a new Routemaster... The Boris Bus replaced the articulated buses predominantly as the majority of route masters had already been removed from non heritage routes prior to the Boris Bus entering service

By the time these buses get scrapped in about 10 years Khan won’t be Mayor. The Diesels are going first followed by the “new” routemaster.
If the electricity is powered by carbon and rare earths necessary for the batteries it is not an environmental victory. The opposite.
When the battery busses start catching fire like a Ford Pinto, they will say that there is nothing they can do. We already had the technology almost 100 years ago, a trolley bus, it's light and is unlikely to cause a long lasting fire, and would be much lighter, causing less damage to the streets.
Battery buses have already been catching fire.
You overlooked something. What about the ken bendy bus. These replaced routemasters around 2000. They were great and so disabled, elderly, pushchair friendly. Ok so there were problems with passenger honesty but they worked so well and people could get on and of them dead quick. If course the vicious ultra right wing media in the Uk hated everything ken did. London sold them on to other cities who were glad to take them.
Passenger honesty was affected by the new demographic.
Trolly busses like they have in eastern Europe might have been a better option, as they are powered using overhead cables, but can also have an engine for where there are no power cables. They are also articulated like trams.
Bendy buses were a poor fit for many of London's streets. They could not be used on a lot of routes because of their length.
Those buses were involved in many traffic collisions due to the size of the bus not being suitable for the streets of London. They could have tried to accomodate the buses with new routes to mitigate that, but its like putting a plaster on instead of treating the wound and dressing it properly.
The bendy buses weren’t even good for many of the routes they were deemed suitable for, let alone the whole of London - the length meant they frequently got stuck across junctions - does nobody else remember the massive gridlocks in the mid 2000s at places like Cambridge Circus, when they were brought in on the 38? Our streets in central London are narrow and medieval in layout compared to many European cities. And they most certainly were not friendly for the elderly or actually, many people with disabilities, just because they were single deck and had level access for wheelchairs - the number of standing passengers and dire lack of seats made them a poor replacement for the Routemasters (with a conductor to make sure that elderly people, those with limited mobility or blind people got on and sat down before the bus moved. On the bendies I’m sure the driver couldn’t even see where they had gone)! They’re ok for moving lots of able bodied people quickly over a short distance so quite suitable for airport car park shuttles etc.
Agree the buses get hot but they are really quite good looking.. I love the wrap around windows and the back exit is useful too.
