    Man! A cap! My cap is from my Dad. Older than me! I don’t weld enough to need to buy a new one, so it is a nice to have for me. If there is a student that needs it, go for it! To be clear, I think it would be fun to be in the mix just for the excitement, but if I’m picked, please pick again for someone that really needs it…and I’ll toss you some $$ for horse radish instead! 😊

    Awesome hood!
    I have an earlier version of the Miller Digital Infinity. As mentioned in an earlier post, it has the X-mode which I always use because even indoors, LED lights can prematurely trigger it similar to when the sun hits it just right, either way, it’s very annoying. The other feature Miller boasts is their viewing area is supposedly the largest (that Viking looks to be about the same size), and Miller’s newest version has what they call “Clear Light Technology 2.0”, which is suppose to give you more definition, but mine only has the original 1st gen clear light, so I can’t really say whether or not it’s better. Miller only has a 3 year warranty, and I just recently had to have the screen replaced due to the Autodarking feature not responding as fast as it originally did, so I was getting Flashed for a second, which was both painful and distracting. I would have to say Miller is very good when it comes to their warranty service. I briefly considered upgrading/buying a new hood, but unfortunately, the current version costs between $400 and $475 depending on the graphic. The miller has many of the same controls and timers etc. as the Viking, but not as many or as nice as the Viking’s features like the external grind button would be nice.
    Miller says that solar panel is a battery assist to increase the life of the two CR2450 coin cells, which seem to be very popular. Oddly, Miller insists you need to use Panasonic batteries because they make better electrical contact, and prevents glitches. I had new Panasonics (sold by Miller) installed, and the lens still glitched. Before they would replace the lens under warranty, they insisted on installing new Panasonic batteries, so I jumped thru all their diagnostic hoops, including new batteries, so they replaced it, only after the dealer repeated all the diagnostics while on the phone with their tech support. What a pain in the butt, but it’s working now, and that’s what matters.
    If I were to be in the market for a new hood, I think I would buy the Lincoln Viking 3350ADV.
    The headgear in both the Viking and the Infinity are very similar, and I’m not a fan of it. I had to use little Zip-ties to reinforce the pivoting rear head pad because it kept popping apart.
    Now I just need to figure out how to convince the Chief Financial Officer aka the wife to let me get one! 😂
    Too bad you can’t get the Steam Punk graphics like your old hood, I really envied it. I hope it works well for you, and I’m looking forward to seeing it in action, and your long term review.

    Hey Greg, new hobby apprentice here, I got this helmet with my new welder, and it's still waiting to be unboxed....just waiting for some argon, and my electric upgrade in my garage. I felt it important for me to get a decent brand name helmet with fairly large viewing area to make it easier on me...I ended up paying about the same as you from Bakers gas....no problems there, as it was the only thing I ordered.

      I have been a huge fan of the 3350 and I wouldn’t be as good of a welder as I am without it. The fact the 3350 I had (first gen) lasted through 6+ years of use, -10 degree temps, pouring rain, and untold drops, solidified it as excellent hood. I am glad to hear you went with a good hood right from the start. They cost a lot out the better you can see the better you can weld. I was stuck on a fixed shade for a week a few weeks ago, and I don’t ever want to go back to one lol.

    I looked at this Lincoln helmet and the Esab A60 ( I have the A50) and the Miller Digital Infinity. I chose the Miller as it has a very wide view and it also has what they call Xmode, this I really like and it was the deal maker. Most all my welding is done outside.
    The sun affects helmets depending of were it is. With Xmode, no flashes to dark and no open flash when welding. It some how senses the sun or other bright lights or the gut welding next to you , so you don't flashed by him or have the helmet go dark because of the sun. As for the head gear, I prefer the Esab head gear, adjusts easy and feels good on the head. I guess it depends on how many knobs and points your head has.

    • @makingmistakeswithgreg
      @makingmistakeswithgreg  Před 5 měsíci

      Surprisingly enough I have never used a esab hood, despite owning a ton of their welders. They are next on the list to try. I also will be trying the current version of the top end miller soon, a friend just bought one. The one I have doesn’t have the x mode, which seems to be a good feature. False darkening sucks out doors, for the most part I can dial the Viking down enough to prevent it, but it’s not perfect.

    Hey Greg, two, three weeks ain’t nothin”. I ordered a vibratory polisher/deburrer from Trick Tools, a company I’ve ordered from a number of times. Usually, product arrives quickly, within 5 days. But this was said to ship directly from the manufacturer, Burr King and may take extra time. Every time a company ships directly from a manufacturer it takes more time. Ok, no problem. Well, now it’s a problem, as it’s slightly over two months! Enjoy your new helmet. I just replaced my still working ESAB A50 with the newer A60, main improvement I wanted is a much brighter view. Yeah, a new helmet is nice. By the way Greg - you worry too much.

      I will, but I can tell you they are identical. Nothing was upgraded with the cartridge as far as color or clarity. It’s actually really hard to tell the clarity (on video or photos)apart with many of the new hoods. There are differences though, they are just so subtle it’s tough to see them.

    Sparked a thought, Velcro a Stream Light or similar small flash light on your welding hood. Make sense and adds versatility. Add Velcro in multiple spots on your hood. Problem solved. I work in a fab shop and as we all know, the lighting is not always the best in certain locations while welding. 👍🏻

    • @makingmistakeswithgreg
      @makingmistakeswithgreg  Před 4 měsíci

      I am with you on that thought. A simple headlamp setup like you said would provide a ton a capability on any hood, and honestly is the way I would go. Usefulness of that vs the built in one has to favor the custom headlamp. Other than it might hit something.

    • @makingmistakeswithgreg
      @makingmistakeswithgreg  Před 5 měsíci +1

      The next hood I will get my hands on will be a esab. You would think I would have one since I have owned so many esab machines, but I have never used any of the new sentinels. I have heard a lot of good things about them. It has the same optical clarity as the Viking 3350. Based on the overall design the only thing I don’t like is the wrap around shield. I think that would promote dust from getting in between the shield and the cartridge, which would require removal of the shield and cleaning of the cartridge. The Viking has the shield attached on top of the cartridge with a 360 degree gasket, so dust doesn’t get between the cartridge and the outward screen. It makes cleaning it up easier (a wipe with windex is all it takes with no disassembly.

    Hi Greg, thanks for the review. Can you do a follow up on whether the light actually works or not. My welding setup doesn't have great lighting, so I find that feature interesting. I have the harbor freight titanium hood, which I like, but I have the miller mini respirator and it doesn't fit under that hood. I'm curious if you have done any testing with something similar.

      Great idea and you’re in luck. I actually picked up a Lincoln respirator, and have the miller one as well. I also bought 2 other new hoods, the miller digital infinity and the esab a60. I will be reviewing both the miller and esab, and I will do a comparison video of all 3. I will make sure to test fit of the filter masks with all of them. I will also test the light out to see how useful it is in a dark environment.
      Edit: as far as the mask goes I know the miller fits under the Viking without issue, since I wear the miller as fair amount.

    Hi Greg, I’d like to be in the hat for the cap. Stars and Stripes would make a dash in the UK but I accept postage would make it a no go option. I would love to see the difference between what you actually see through the lens comparing a really cheap helmet and something more expensive. My helmet is a SIP from Halfords, a car group in the UK. It cost about £30. It definitely works and I’ve had it almost a year. I’m a more of hobby welder but am thinking about a better helmet and trying to decide what I really need to spend to see some improvement through the lens rather than hi tech features which I’ll never use.. Thanks for all the time you spend and the advice you offer.

      I will put you in for the hat, I will pick a winner this weekend. I will try to shoot some video to show the clarity differences. It’s incredibly hard to get the camera to really show how different the visual quality is between high and low dollar hoods. It’s not because there isn’t a difference. It’s because the cameras cover up a lot of those differences. I should be able to find a way though.

    Greg I have a Lincoln 3350 about a year old it does come with the grind mode but no light and blue tooth app crap. I like the idea of the light cause there are times it's handy I have attacked a cheap lite on top of mine. I don't like the idea of an app keep it simple stupid. I'm 70 so I really don't want to deal with an app to use a welding helmet. I've been looking at espresso machines and when they say they have this app to control the temperature of the boiler I move on to the next one. I'm just old school and I like simplicity.

    • @makingmistakeswithgreg
      @makingmistakeswithgreg  Před 5 měsíci

      I definitely agree, I don’t see much of a benefit of the app. The funny thing is, I can change all the settings on the hood in less time that the ap takes to load and communicate with the hood. If the hood could communicate and change settings with a welder, that would be somewhat useful. What they have going on now is of little use lol.

      Yes, If you have your phone anywhere near what you are welding, it's toast. One weld "spatter" on the screen and it's done. A button on the helmet to change shades.... now were talkin! Something that will work when touched with a welding glove on (unlike a phone).

      I don’t see the appeal of a Bluetooth connection. Bluetooth sucks a significant amount of power which is definitely reflected in battery life if the user does not maintain charge with the solar cell. If Miller adds Bluetooth to the welders someday for connection to the helmet I would think the helmet will need a firmware update. Firmware updates are not possible on the helmet as far as I know. I’m interested to know more about the Fronius helmet and welder control.

    Hello Greg, With the modern super bright super small flashlights I wouldn't put up with that "light". Get a headlamp, take the band off and super glue it on. If you want get one of the three headed ones for even more light. Also, in the modern world a warranty is much like a Fairy Tale. Gives you a good feeling (if you are very naive) but there isn't much truth in it. They will fine print you to death, then freight charges will drive you away, and if that doesn't do it, they will bring out the 'exceptions', i.e. were you wearing it on a rainy day or a sunny day? Both are excluded from coverage. Standing up, laying down, or sitting same thing. Then they will trot out the amortization. Your hood is 4.8 years old, then it is worth ten dollars. Now the "warranty" doesn't even cover the postage. If you still go ahead then they will add the exclusion if you ever changed a battery and didn't have a certified approved warrant center do the job. Still pressing on? Ok now they let you know the warranty only covers (after exclusions and provisos!) parts not labor. So you go ahead and send it back anyway. They then message you that the helmet was abused and not covered also that you owe them $450 for labor to examine a helmet out of warranty! Warranties are like insurance on steroids. But they seem to work according to P.T. Barnum's law, I suppose, "There is one born every second"!
