I believe Evie can't fully be with Colin Robinson because she needs to be sad enough to able to be pityful.
Like, if Colin was seem as interesting by others, he could not feed at all! It might be the same for Evie: she cannot be fully happy or she won't be eble to fake sadness.
It's actually kind of a tragic thought! More like the cursed existence vampirism is supposed to be.
