- Is keeping a marine aquarium / saltwater tank as hard as people think it is?
So often I hear people say I couldn't do that? But Why?
Its as easy or as hard as we make it.

Keeping a reef tank is like having one giant science project in your home. You have to know a little about biology (organisms), chemistry (saltwater balance), and physics (plumbing).
It's also fun :p
I bought a tank, sump, lights, salt, live sand then I ran out of money
just a120 gallon tank of sand and salt water running in the corner
Why didn’t u plant it out and have a budget
sorry, I didn't expect sand to cost $280, rocks will cost around $1000, I'm 17 and lost my job a month ago, its not like I didn't plan, but life happens. I'm okay with it sitting in the corner for a while, saltwater tanks take a lot of time money and heartbreak to set up@@James-by4wk
I know that feeling :p
I'm sorry to hear you lost your job :(
laziness is a my worst enemy for this hobby.
I'd have to agree with you there
No its money
This isn't just about reefing, this is a life lesson! Great video
That aquarium is a heaven in earth
On learning: "being nice to other humans" Haha. Great comment and really nice video 👍
Thank you :)
I didn't know you watched this MD
Time and money. That's the biggest factors
Very true
And that my friend, is exactly what the hobby is all about!!!
Listen I had a 75 for 15 years was beautiful research buy a couple books PATIENCE that's the key lost it all by hurricane stupid didn't have a generator can be costly find a good store that doesn't push stuff on you that's what's costly and time once its established ALMOST will take care of itself may get back into it looking to move have to wait
@@butch9044 next time use your car as a generator. Super easy to set up and tanks dont need an insane amount of power.
Hit the nail on the head !!!
As a high school science/chemistry teacher... your words resonate with conviction and clarity. Thank you
Thank you for this positive perspective and the encouragement.
I've kept a lot of animals from big things like cows, sheep, pigs and a horse to hamsters, guinea pigs, cats and dogs and a couple birds. And I've never had any issues with caring for them but everyone has always told me that saltwater fish tanks are extremely difficult so I never bothered but this is made me desperately want to try a saltwater tank.
This video is amazing ty so much for your time n knowledge , ,me and my wife are wanting to start our very first salt tank together 55gal n we have been doing alot of research n this video has really.made us feel.alot better about going forward
Brilliant video thanks - very sound advice - built my first marine tank a few months ago - had some highs and lows - about to build another - will remember your video 👍👍
I'd like to see more people debunking the idea that aquariums, even salt water aquariums, are a rich person's hobby. Some fish are ridiculously expensive, sure, but all the little (and big) crap people buy may not be as useful or necessary as what they've been told.
This is one of your best videos
Brilliant video very true I love this hobby I test my water weekly clean glass daily change socks every two days and always trying to get my tank to look better it's a lot of hard work and a lot of money but very satisfying .
Great ways to explain how we do with the marine aquariums , routine, routine and more routine is what keeps mine growing very nice. Thank you! For this video
I kept a marine tank and it was fine...so long as "I" was taking care of it. Fast forward to the wife wanting to take a vacation and me asking a "friend" to feed my fish. I came home after one week to a tank full of dead fish & coral valued at 6k in mid 90's money. Granted this was in the 90's and it was my "friend"'s fault because he couldn't be bothered to do what I asked.
Had a similar experience when my mother-in-law took care of my tank. Literally cooked the coral and fish....
@@jim1120 Jeez, that's brutal
You can get an autofeeder or hire a petsitter for the vacation, just write EXACT instructions for feeding, matinence, etc.
For my first tank I got a 32.5 gallon Fluval all in one tank, and it’s been really easy, I’ve had it for almost 4 months, and I haven’t even needed to do a water change yet, and I haven’t even needed to turn on the skimmer, I think the key is stocking fish and corals slowly, and researching. I was not expecting it to go this week, and I know more maintenance will come, but it really isn’t a difficult hobby
Great footage, and good advice. Thanks for sharing.
I love how salt water reefs mold me into a expert. No matter how hard, or challenging the hobby can be, the suspense thrives me to greater knowledge!
I feel exactly the same way... always more to learn as well
Let me tell you ...If my 19 year old autistic son can keep a reef tank anybody can! 😁 Also he’s upgrading from his ten gallon to a 20 gallon now because of needed room!
Post Script
Awesome video as always! Sometimes all you need is a little inspiration to breath some life back into your passion! Thanks 🙏🏼
I have aspergers and I find it easy to keep a reef tank. I used to have a 180 gallon reef but downsized to a fluval evo 13.5 that is super easy to keep. I think me having aspergers has helped means reef keeping is my obsession along with gaming and I have to know everything about it and I research about reef keeping constantly even if I know about a coral I will always read more about it. People on the spectrum arnt stupid you know.
diddystar 86 ..... I wasn’t stating at all that my son is stupid. I was bragging 😁 I’m very proud of him. As a matter of fact he holds down a job at Petco that he loves and everyone there loves him as well. That job has really brought him out of his shell so to speak. He also has a 75 gallon planted angel fish tank and a 55 gallon mixed community tank! His hobby’s are gaming and fish too. He’s such a great kid and just like you everything he does has to be exact and just so. The only problems he has is with point blank in the moment decision making skills and for that reason he can’t drive. My wife and I drive him to and from work and he even has a manager that picks him up at 5:30 am on truck days. She offered to do that for us which was very kind.
@@2pleez122474 I think I may off read your message wrong so I apologise if I was rude. And its also brilliant that your son is working in the type of job that he loves not many people on the spectrum are as successful when it comes to working. I'm lucky that my wife helps me out when it comes to socializing as I do sometimes offend people if I say something I shouldn't. Anyways I think it's fantastic your son is into fish keeping it's a fantastic hobby for anyone on the spectrum because as you may know we love science and keeping a aquarium and definitely with a reef aquarium there's lots of science involved. And I'm sure your son is doing a fantastic job with all his aquariums
diddystar 86 .... Thanks for commenting back😁 I’m glad you understand where I was coming from. Thanks for all the kind words about my son. That really means a lot and I will relay this to him as inspiration! One day we’re hoping that he may find a good significant other that is understanding, kind and helpful like you have. Up to this point he has shown no interest in girls/young women. He claims he has had online girlfriends but we really want him to make a physical connection with someone as we feel that is what he needs.
I love how easy that discussion between you guys was handled in 2 messages. I hate when I see 2 people, going back and forth on a point that neither of them is wrong on. I remember coming to the USA and having a teacher tell my mom I was slow... and shy, and wasn’t talking...really? I didn’t speak the language duh 🙄 well I ended up getting a scholarship to NYU at 14 and attending at 15. Grad by 19. Slow?
Labels hurt and stop people from being themselves. You guys rock!!! ❤️
Commitment is absolutely key to long term success. I would add one more...Consistency. Awesome video 👍🏾👍🏾
Very true :)
Thank you very much for your eloquent and informative video!
What a great video. Your comments relate to so many other things outside of the content.
I have had my saltwater tank up for nearly a decade now. Thriving 100g mixed reef. SPS. LPS. Softies. The majority of my knowledge came from trial and error. It currently houses over 20 coral species and 10 fish species. I have a couple corals and fish that I have had now for that decade. It is a wonderful hobby that brings joy and "wows" to many people. While the hobby is not that hard to maintain doing it optimally can get very costly. I have easily over $1000 USD in lighting alone. Then you have your sump system. Skimmers. Dosers. Reactors. UV. I also run a chiller. Pumps and powerheads. RO/DI water station then the salt mixes. Difficult, not really. Costly and time consuming, very much so. Maintenance on all that hardware every 3-6 months. Although the more established the reef becomes the less time you will have to spend on it. Until you have to frag.......
The smaller the tank the harder to maintain the nutrient levels making it harder to control algae. Highly recommend a 75g or more for your first tank. I now have 5 reef tanks ranging from 10g to my 100g. Cheers on the video. Looks beautiful.
Pickle MeTimbers how much does it cost you per year in total? How much did it cost you to set it up? Thanks for your answer! All the best!
@8:55 that fish looks ANGRY🤣
Maybe he is :p
Very good overview regarding taking the leap into saltwater marine aquariums. It gave me a little more confidence at least. I've had freshwater aquariums for over 65 years, never been without one or four. I enjoy the hobby very much and the challenges of overcoming a problem is always a learning experience. Keep up the informative videos.
wow 65 years...It sounds like its time for you to get a saltwater tank.
With that sort of experience...trust me, you'll be fine
Thank you❤ the lady at the pet store today was saying the exact opposite to me despite me NOT being a complete beginner to aquarium keeping so it's refreshing to hear some hope. I still haven't decided whether I am ready to leap onto saltwater but I am researching to find out if I am. ❤

This hobby is as easy or difficult as you make it. It also very addictive..
That last bit is very very true :p
Thank you for saying what you said. Its inspiring me to press on with my reef build
Sounds like my video worked then :)
what beautiful set up you have!
Honestly your totally correct and I love this video. I had been keeping freshwater tanks for years, and started watching your videos and decided to start a 10 gallon nano reef and am upgrading later in the month. As long as you research what your doing, it’s super easy and almost as easy as freshwater. I love being able to just look at my zoas and frogspawn. It’s just such a nice hobby.
Sounds like you've got the bug, upgrading already :)
Bassmaster23 I find marine easier than fresh
I always thought it was impossible till I actually did it
I thought the same
I've got loads of reptiles but I'd love a couple of clown fish
Your video just made me decide to start my investigation into all there is to fishkeeping an start the hobby once I’m done, in the near future.
Thanks for this video! I’m new to learning about salt and I really enjoyed this video.
Informative, clear, and engaging. And the video images inspiring. 👌🏻
I enjoyed so much I subscribed!
It’s all about water chemistry, the water parameters are the most important everything else comes after that if you don’t test you’ll never know what’s going on with your tank it’s all about keeping pristine water 💯👍
True, but SW inhabitants live in a much more narrow water parameter range than FW inhabitants, so don't you have to tend to a SW tank more diligently than a FW tank?
Yeah I'm out on saltwater. Several thousand dollars. Just in the setup. I can do the same thing with freshwater and not worry about killing 2000$ in fish.
Its hard to say if its more rewarding because of this though
The same can be said for both salt and freshwater. They can be expensive then can also not be expensive. Just as Joey who had lots of freshwater expensive losses.
Buy a good used tank and buy tough inexpensive fish till your tank is established. I'm setting one up all said and done it will be about $800 for the tank and about $350 for all the fish I want to stock. If I bought new, the tank would set me back $3500!
I'm probably going to stock Chromis and a saddle puffer to break it in (after a Ammonia cycle) then get the Coral beauty, then the blenny, then the Fox face, then a butterfly, then a Zebra eel, and finally last goes the Blue jaw trigger all probably a couple months apart.
I'm also building a sump system good for a 200gallon for my 100gallon for extra stability.
I have no interest in Uber rare and expensive fish, there are plenty of amazing fish for $40 vs $400.
A have a co-worker that has a 15 year old reef tank, it's so cycled and stable he changes 30% of the water once a month and has corals as old as the tank.
Freshwater fish cant compare to saltwater fish. Fresh water fish are boring!
I like Freshwater fish more! African cichlids . Plus I can't afford 100$ for a lion fish.
awesome video!! so many people ask me how hard it is to have saltwater tanks and most people seem to just assume its too difficult. it definitely takes a lot of research.
Thats the step most people like to skip
Thank you very much. I'm in the beginning of my research with the goal of getting a marine tank at the end of this year, or the beginning of next year. I have some saving to do. But I plan to spend the time it takes me to save watching helpful CZcams videos like this to give me a good starting point. Thank you very much.
Keeping a reef tank is easy until its not. It can be easy until things go sideways, its keeping them from crashing, when they start to head down hill, that is the hard part. If you can stomach loosing lots of money and watching beautiful things die and still have the drive to keep on keeping on, this hobby is for you! But I will stay I had 10+ years in this hobby through my late teens and twenties in the 90's with minimal success and have picked it back up again 5 years ago. The products we have to keep corals now actually make it possible to keep creatures alive and even thrive! I use to kill things all the time and now I have a thriving 90 gallon mixed reef. If you are a reefer, youtube is you're best friend!
Very true, I learn so much from youtube as well
I found the majority of my help on saltwater forums. It wasn't until I was 5 years in did CZcams start to have content that would further assist me.
I find running saltwater tanks pretty easy and I have two that I run different ways. My 75 gallon mixed reef has a sump, reef octopus skimmer, while I run hob, filtration, and skimmer on my 65 gallon softie tank with just a couple pieces of lps, and sps...just to see if they live. So far so good. They are both doing well, for someone who's only been reefing for 18 months. I set up the 65 the way I did, to show folks that it can be done with hob equipment for folks on a budget. I test every week, and I do water changes bi weekly, unless it tests off, then its once a week.
Tina's Reef ....That’s so awesome!!! Great Job Tina 😁
Well done Tina! I have used HOB as well. I have found that I will end up having a lot more salt creep then the other setups. Same can be said for the rimless tanks that flow over the sides. Lots of salt creep and it builds up fast! However it can be done successfully!
Thank you Pickle me timbers!!!! I do notice salt creep but I clean it up every couple of days. I hate the creep but I know its going to happen
Brilliant video. 😊 A lot of what you said with regard to research, preparation and testing applies to freshwater too. 👍
It would be nice to have someone knowledgeable and experienced to help me get started. I believe that to be my main hesitation.
Some here
Find a aquarium store in you local area. I don’t mean pet smart or pet co. I mean a nice store that has a focus on fish and actual experts who love the hobby so much they’ve made it their job. Most cities have at least one. Go there with a budget in mind and start asking questions.
The Lazarus Psychology like what I said to him. Just google fish store near me and something will pop up. avoid chain stores because in my experience they don’t know what they’re talking about.
@@joshuaspath6923 Fr they bullshit you all the time

Great video! Merry Christmas!
I hope you had a good one too :)
Great video! I think the people that are really successful in reef keeping also like the challenge the hobby offers. I can't say I love it when things go wrong but I always try to look it as an opportunity to learn something.
I certainly can be a challenge when you pick some of the more difficult livestock
I've sent this to my friend who's considering it
Hopefully it pushes him over the edge and you'll have a new fish buddy
That last point is 100% me... smh you didn’t have to get that real 😂
Lol secret is out 😛
Now those words at the end are from an intelligent person! Deserves so much more this guy. 😮
So true. Information is so easy and free today. Not doing it is inexcusable.
For the level of complexity you are willing to engage in, try yourself. Don't aim too high and build experience.
Great advice :)
Much easier now than when I started 15 years ago
Even I've noticed a differences in the time I've been doing it
the hardest thing about it is saving up the money to buy everything
When I first started my tank this is who I watched !
Those were great tips and advice.
Good approach. However, I chose to leave the hobby because so many of the fish and corals were not raised in captivity. Given that reefs are so special and important to our oceans, I do not want to do anything to upset that delicate balance. I am happy with my freshwater fish and plants. It still remains true that it costs a lot more money to have a salt water tank than a fresh.
Fragbox.ca
Is this all your tank!??? Wow
lol I wish, this was a mixture of lots of tanks :)
Great vid sir!!
Thank you :)
I remember watching this video when you posted it and I was about 3 months into my first tank and i was using a little 25 gallon and i had the wrong mindset coming in cause it was such a learning curve coming from cichlids and discus. I got into the hobby wanting a challenge but realized when watching your video it wasnt about the challenge as in it hard to keep saltwater it was about the amount of care and commitment it takes to have a beautiful tank. I struggle with ptsd and the matianence and the attention it requires completely envelopes you at times. And therein lies the beauty. Any new comers to the hobby my advice is research research research but have fun doing it.😁
Sounds like great advice to me :p
Not criticizing, but I've heard many times your success factor moves up by using larger tanks. 25 gallon seems too small for me unless you keep the numbers down to compensate. The few times I got into trouble was when I had birth explosions and didn't give away the growing fry before I experienced a bio overload. It took me a while to overcome the parasite invasion, but eventually, I did without much loss.
Well I’m not autistic so I may have a disadvantage but I’ve been keeping SW and FW tanks for more than 30 years. Used to keep fish only SW tanks under fluorescent bulbs and no corals available back then.
SW chemistry / balance is very challenging and I feel that your video may suggest otherwise and people will get in over their heads.
SW requires constant maintenance and the equipment is VERY expensive compared to FW
Finally if you wish to start SW I suggest no less than 50 gallons as the smaller tank chemistry will be a constant headache. The smaller the volume of water, the greater swings in the balance
Harry T - gotta agree with you about the complexity of SW - beautiful but a ton of work - I couldn’t take a vacation because I had no one to help with the maintenance. I’ve lost hundreds of dollars of fish - very disappointing hobby
I keep this in mind when I wanna start SW tanks I got FW but I've been wanting a SW tank
@@BigDaddyRic I used to have SW but eventually switched it to FW. WAYYYYYYYYYY too expensive and wayyyyyyy too sensitive. Discus are prized FW fish, and yet are far easier to manage then most SW fish and around the same price.
@@hajjdawood dude my discuss died this week I had a bad spikes man my roommate thought I didn't feed my fish and he droped in more food and you know people who don't know about fish they just dump away and well yeah long story short he was the first die but saved my other fishes and thanks my friend I'll keep that in mind I'm still thinking if I should or not or maybe have both idk
Harry T Thanks for your comment. I have FW now and am on the fence on starting a SW tank. It seems that it is more complex as the water have to be “maintained” constantly especially in nano tanks. FW tanks can survive evaporation and dirtier water with lots of plant and/or aquaponics. I don’t understand those that say it’s just as easy as FW tanks.
Yes it is its hard at the beginning and you can spend lots off 💰 but gets easier little by little
Tell me about it, I have 2 tanks, both about 60 litres each, spend money on Zoas like it’s going out of fashion lol, good job I can afford it
@@markevans2280 we started with a 50 g and then upgraded to a 100g but can not go any bigger 😢
I had 5 tanks at one point... thats when you know things are starting to get out of hand :p

Brilliant Vid pal 👌🏻
I'm trying to setup a 75 gallon saltwater tank. I've had it setup with water in it for a week now. The first time I checked the salinity level it was too high (above 1.026) I drained some water and added fresh water (non salt) I let it sit overnight and checked the salt level again this time it was too low so I added more salt and brought the level up to 1.024. I let it sit overnight and checked it the level again in the morning. This time it was too low.
WTF am I doing wrong? How can the salt level change so fast overnight?
Have you got sand in the tank ? Mine was up & down for a few weeks, it will stabilise in time, persevere
@@markevans2280 no I just have gravel.
How are you checking your salinity? Hydrometers arent really accurate. Dips in salinity arent something to pull your hair out over most times though.

Great great video. I enjoy this more than the average. Thank you.
Glad to hear it :D
I totally agree with this! I'm new to the hobby, my tank is just over 6 months old and definitely still maturing, but people ask me all the time if saltwater is hard. I always respond the same, it's as hard or as easy and you make it. If you start off doing like crazy and trying to speed up your cycle because you want fish and corals, or if you cut corners and get lazy with water changes, you're setting yourself up for trouble. I let mine run for 2 months before stocking anything and, although I'm dealing with a bit of a Cyano bloom at the moment, I haven't had any major issues at all so far. It can be such an amazing hobby if you put the little bit of work, patience, and time in.
You are exactly right...cutting corners is where people go wrong
