The bandsaw is one of my favorite tools and if you treat it well, it will quickly become one of your favorites as well. While most modern bandsaws come with decent components, to begin with, there are companies like Carter Products who make high-quality after-market add-ons that can make your bandsaw better performing and easier to adjust. One of the best upgrades you can do is replacing the guide system. Alex Snodgrass from Carter Products came out to my shop and helped me install new guides on both my Powermatic PM1500 Bandsaw and my Powermatic 14" Bandsaw. He also included their unique Blade Stabilizer for cutting tight curves with small blades.
So I hope you enjoy seeing the upgrade process and don't forget to check out the Bandsaw Setup Video I referenced in the video.

Alex Snodgrass has a very compelling way of explaining things that doesn't stand up to scrutiny. The "align the gullet with the top of the wheel" bit made me roll my eyes.
+Matthew Reed not sure what you mean.
Just behind the bottom of the gullet on the crown (i.e. the raised middle) on the top of the top wheel is what he recommended, as best I can recall. What didn't you like Matt?
As I watched this guy install these parts, I could quickly see the high level of dexterity and competence in his motions. Seeing him actually use the saw confirmed it. He has been around the block a few times.
Seeing him do it in person is kind of jaw dropping. If you have a chance to watch his demonstration at one of The Woodworking Shows it's well worth the time.
I attended the show in Ft Worth a few years ago and watched Alex probably 5 times. Super demonstration.
I have a 14 inch delta and tried everything on utube to get a straight cut and no good, had the drift going on so bad I was going to sell it and then I met Alex at a wood show and watched his work and had a long talk with him, he set me up with the guide kit and showed me what to do and man I can cut paper thin sheets of any kind of wood, I was so excited I went back to the show the next day to shake his hand and picked up the guide for tight tunes and it works great, it’s like having a new saw, I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t buy this it is like magic, I’m using my bad saw more than my table saw, it’s unbelievable
That deer at the end was pretty slick.
Thanks guys. I watched Alex's video and reset my Laguna 14" and for the first time in a long long time there was no drift! I wish I could afford the Carter bearings. Keep up the great info.
My mouth is agape at him cutting out that reindeer! Wow! Good video.
Great stuff. I just bought my first band saw. Looking forward to adding it to my shop.
I have used Carter guides on band saws for decades and when they make mounting for most any band saw there is no reason to not use Carter guides. I am also a fan of the Carter steady rest for a wood lathe. Carter Products are the best!
I bought the carter mag fence and fast system, they are both awesome! I am really digging that company.
I inherited an old reliant (junk brand I know) and seldom used it because of drift and vibration. I put carter guides and tires dust brush on it, and it cuts like a champ. There is no drift or vibration any more. It was worth every penny.
A+ on attracting good sponsors!
Sweet upgrades! 👍
Excellent video Thanks a lot but I have a question I'm interesting to cut a balsa tree to a thickness of 1.5 mm (size 100 * 100 mm) What kind of saw I need to get a smooth slice
I've been lusting after that little blue number for some time now... I may just have to take the tumble one of these days, and order me a Carter blade and that sweet guide! It does things to bandsaws that I thought only scrollsaws were allowed to do! :-)
do you have any brands of blades you prefer? and what size blade is he using to cut that awesome reindeer?
I look into to the Carter guide kit for my 14" bandsaw and after considering the price I decided instead order a brand new seal bearings and blade and fallow Alex tips about the correct way to set up you machine and put my saw to the test and the results were remarkable so I will stay with the original blade guide and just invest on new well sharp blades is much chipre and the results are the same .
NICE, love it man
Will those work with a skil band saw that’s all I have
With the different Bearings, are the saws less loud?
OUTSTANDING!
Awesome video thanks for the information. I had a chance to meet Alex at the Chantilly Virginia woodworking show. I have a video of him on my channel doing a demonstration of a bandsaw box and cutting out a reindeer. Amazing how quickly he works.
Hi from Brazil! Beautiful machines I really like your channel
I'm lucky to have a couple of those Snodgrass reindeers in my shop.
Alex snodgrass is so awsome thanks for the post
is the bottom guides still set to. how u would normally set it , for a smaller size of blade? or was it removed like the top
my rikon bandsaw , has the same operating system i see no difference to mine or this one , besides maybe higher rpm bearings . i like this guy , watched his vids on how to put the bandsaw blade right in the middle or the tire the gullet that is ! . have u had many nbandsaw blades break at the weld mark? just wondering if its just a shit blade or maybe its too tight?
Question for those in the know.
When putting a 3/4" blade on the same 14" Powermatic how is it possible to center gullets on top wheel when the standard thrust bearings wont adjust back far enough?
I have a Sceppach Basa 1 Bandsaw. Is it worth getting a Carter stabiliser for it?
Exactly what I needed. My bandsaw needs a new life!!
Great video
I actually just replaced my with the carter guides they are amazing
Only clicked this for the thumbnail.....only hahahha
Do you know if this kit works on the powermatic model #pwbs-14" all I see is for powermatic 14" CS 141-143 .
CAN YOU PUT THIS UP GRADE KIT FOR A PORTE CABLE SAW???
Thank you.
well merry friggin Christmas!
Just waiting for Mathias showing his new bandsaw stabilizer system.
Oh that's great !!
😂😂😂😂
ouch
Shots fired!
How much do you make compared to what you are given?
Impressive reindeers.....
Carter products too
Which carter guide replacement fits the PM1500? I didn't see one on their website & I like the carter barrel-nut design vs the standard PM guide on that saw.
You might check with them. If I remember correctly, the one they sent me initially did not fit so they had to send a second one with the smaller bearings.
Do they have that fancy scroll guide for the Laguna 14-12? I couldn't seem to find it on the Carter website
Ben Marvin yes call Kim at 1-888-622-7837
Great video! I'd love to get the pattern for that reindeer. Can't seem to find it anywhere. Does he have it online somewhere?
Thanks! Gary
Here it is: woodgears.ca/reindeer/scrollsaw_plans.html
Thanks! That one I had. I thought Alex had a different one that could be done larger, less intricate on the bandsaw. Thanks
Does Carter make retrofits for vintage bandsaws? I have a 1930s era Oliver 217 that I would love to use their guides on.
Zachary Brosious no, not for that saw but they do make custom ones. Check out their site carter products .com
I've got a Laguna 16, (Meber 400) , spent the big bucks on the Carter guides, ( which have cam type side rollers) what a project , are you serious? 5 different size hex keys to adjust them ! Their showman Alex suggests removing the table to make it easier, maybe, but not easy to reinstall it. After an hr and a half I'm ready to cut some wood, just hoping I don't have to switch to a different width blade and have to start over
That thumbnail is only possible when you already got 400k subs
Boa noite... Gostaria que vocês fizessem um vídeo para solda de lâminas de serra de fita...
Obrigado...
Wish I could find a really good independent review of Carter guides. I am sure they are quality made but are they really worth the price? Sure, if you have a bunch of cash to spend then paying the price for a bit of an improvement might be worth it, but is the improvement you get really worth nearly $400 (Laguna 14/12).
Does this fit most bandsaws?
Carter makes guides for most brands of band saws that are designed for each particular brand and in some cases, the model. For example, a kit for a Jet saw will not work on a Powermatic or a Delta.
I thought powermatic advertised that their bandsaws come with carter guides from the factory?
I don't know why I'm watching this, I don't even own a Bandsaw!!!!!
Yeah! But I betchya it makes you want to get one now! ;) lol!
That’s just too funny!
Please do another shop tour.
I just did one a couple months ago. czcams.com/video/48qxudcYPrU/video.html
What's Joe Rogan doing in your thumbnail?
You have to remove the table to adjust the rear guide,so why not show It?
Mark how do I contact Alex snodges?
Dat thumbnail doe! #TheWoodLunatic
Hello I would like to see if you can build a trabador for the band saw blades so I would get my teeth folded perfect porfa .. hehehe I liked your video ... greets you Argentina.
That's how they do that
Cool guides but my completely "stock" Craftsman 14" Bandsaw has bearings that are sealed and re-packable and uses the barrel screws adjustment, granted they aren't 30,000 RPM bearings but since they will never spin that fast nor do they slow the blade down due to the lower efficiency I don't see how these guides can be all that much better.
I have same craftsman and Carter micro adjust. So much easier to adjust precisely and with 1/2 inch blade so much better supported with the two bearings per side. Combine with blade gullet centered on top tire and its cuts with no drift as Snodgrass said.
Hey Marc, I can't afford the Carter bearings but I've been wanting to upgrade the bearings on my 14" Grizzly bandsaw. I was looking at guide blocks and am considering two options: Cool Blocks or Spaceage Ceramic Guideblocks. The Cool blocks are self lubricating, but the ceramic blocks are supposedly wear proof and claim to remove resin buildup from the blade. Can you recommend one or the other?
Conor McKee I'm not Mark, but have a laguna 1412 with ceramic guides. They are fantastic.
Thanks for replying JB. I was sort of leaning towards those too.
your link to carterproducts in the email is bad.
I didn't post a link to Carter on FB.
sorry it was the email link
love your videos though
Yeah because you need a 30,000rpm bearing. Lol
I wonder how many reindeer he cut in his lifetime.
I'm surprised that Alex still has all his fingertips!
He is good not stupid
JUST TO BAD < THEY DO NOT SHIP TO Canada 🇨🇦
TOTAL DORK
I can't believe that that guy still has ten fingers. Maybe he started out with eleven.
I was thinking the same thing.
Errrr maybe like 16?😂
Obviously never heard of the 3 inch rule (or even a one inch rule for that matter)!
You should always trust a guy with a neatly trimmed moustache. That's why I never trust anything Marc says, ..... his facial hair is a disaster.
I follow a different rule, "Never trust a guy who spends time focusing on other mens' facial hair." ;)
The Wood Whisperer :(
5:40 Watching you speedcut through the bandsaw made me cringe.
I know that it was for demonstration purposes and that you are skilled, but it made me think of that peril fraught scene in Aliens where Bishop was quickly stabbing the knife between the fingers of Hudson. czcams.com/video/qgNsTOc_MIo/video.html&t=25s
Too close for comfort.
Not all bandsaws are made like yours , so you aren't helping me at all
what's that goofy look on your face..... constipation?
Very informative... But you started gaining weight Marc... Watch what you're eating 😁👌
tell me about it! I gained 25 lbs since moving to Colorado. I blame the elevation and gas expansion!
The Wood Whisperer easier to blame than starting a diet.. Amazing channel.. Keep up the good work
lol!!
Could be, living in a hot climate helps keep the weight off.
Why do guys make such ridiculously embarrassing thumbnails. Remember about telling a book by it’s cover. Your material looks foolish, and unprofessional at first glance.
In case you want to learn why people make silly thumbnails. czcams.com/video/DzRGBAUz5mA/video.html And remember the actual saying you're referring to is: "NEVER judge a book by its cover" and that is never truer than on CZcams.
