      +MP197742 Fall for a 2 min repost of the article then, it takes more than a link to scam someone clever like you.
      The retailers are very happy with their massive sales over the holidays, while millions of shoppers entrusted their credit card details to be saved on remote computers, maybe it wasn’t such a good idea? Customers’ details including name, address, credit card number, expiry, CVV and postal code are often stolen like this every day, yet major retailers turn a blind eye.
      Driven by profits, your safety and security are last priority. Retailers encourage shoppers to save their banking details, so future purchases are made with less “friction”, that’s industry lingo for extra time wasted.
      This poses a serious security risk for you, the customer. Massive databases with personal information from millions of customers, being hacked away daily by the thousands with hackers all over the globe (possibly with connections funding extremist groups), and packaged by the hundreds to be sold in the deep web for $10-20 per account.
      To make matters worse, victims never realize the damage until months later. The crooks would chip away at your account, taking out innocent looking small amounts, to moving up to big ticket items. By the time the victim discover the con, he would lose out on thousands of dollars and spending the several months to prove to the bank that he is not guilty of the charges.
      Attempts have been made in the past to shift the risk to the better equipped to handle the attacks, yet even eBay (which just split off PayPal - known as one of the safest) suffered a breach of 148 million customers, one of the largest in history! Even with its reputation, Apple had been hit by fraudsters in their own stores, numerous Home Depot and Target stores are also being targeted.
      “Fundamentally, keeping your banking details outside your wallet is a bad idea.”
      Did you check your credit card statement yet?

      That's why this continues to happen, two years probation is not a sufficient deterrent. Seems when some A-hole is stealing money, and ruining someones credit or stealing their savings, and forcing them to jump through all these hoops to just repair the damage, the perpetrator gets a slap on the hand.
      The higher up the white collar chain the crime is the less they pay when caught if they pay at all in recent memory these people still got millions in bonuses.
      You get caught with a joint and you get more time than a white collar crime that ruins or destroys some peoples credit, and in the process makes their lives miserable trying to repair the damage. I try and use my credit/debit cards as little as possible. I know there are some instances where cash is not accepted and you have to use your credit/debit card. I will take the extra time to run by the bank and get cash so I can pay using cash whenever possible.
      Sucks to not be able to trust the person you hand your card over to to pay for something.

    It's the gas stations responsibility to ensure the digital transaction is safe before they accept a customer payment. Although people should protect themselves, the gas stations/restaurants/etc are at fault and should be responsible financially for every skimmed card.
    For gas stations to allow a universal key to open a gas pump that transacts digital purchases is ludicrous and again they should be financially responsible.

      The skimmer device gets the credit card info which the crook uses to order things online. Later the credit card owner disputes the charge on his bill and the credit card company reverses the charge (which they must do by law). If the item has already shipped then the merchant loses out. The owner of the card is not out anything.

      Yeah! Just like it's their fault if they get robbed, or if someone catches the place on fire! They shouldn't of had doors in the first place! Plus, what if I get mugged while I'm pumping my gas??? That gas attendant being paid $7.25 an hour to sit on an iPad is fully responsible for my safety!
      OR, be smart and:
      Be armed.
      Don't bring flame around gas.
      And set up fucking notices for your credit transactions.
      The victims (both you and the station) are not at fault. The criminal is. It's your job to keep yourself safe, always.
      The pump doors are a product not created by the station, and are standardized. If you do want to blame someone, blame the manufacturer of the pumps.

      I know the comment is a year old. But it really is only 60 days, well depending on the card company it can be up to 6 months but yeah mainly 60 days. After 60 days its usually a wrap. You won't even have the option to submit a fraud/dispute claim on your credit card if its been over so many months. Who the hell would notice an unauthorized charge over a year later anyways? And you gotta put yourself in the bank's shoes, how would they fight a merchant a year later? Because don't forget, most of the time its the merchant that eats the loss not the card company (depending on the case).

    My information was stolen twice even after I got a new card. I wondered how they did it and now I know. Thank you ABC News

      +Rusty Shackelford how exactly is it such a huge hassle if someone steals and uses your credit card info? You call your bank, they cancel and reissue the card, and they give you your money back. Someone takes cash from you on the other hand, and you're SOL. But with a comment like _"If you take my cash, I'll just go to the ATM and get more"_ ...I guess you really don't mind people taking cash from you huh?

    Pay inside? Didn't they begin the video with a skimmer in a McDonald's? Couldn't they do the same inside a gas store?

    • @aquaaub4445
      @aquaaub4445 Před 9 lety +1

      They could but in that instance you were handing your card over to him and he swiped it through a separate skimmer, if you go inside you at least eliminate the possibility of someone swiping your card through a separate skimmer.

    paying cash is way better, it's safe, and most places give a discount on gas when you pay know cash

  • @VirtualVernon
    @VirtualVernon Před 4 lety +14

    If you pay at the pump, make sure you use a pump closest to the tellers window which he has in view. Its least likely to have a skimmer, most are out of view of the teller. Also check you monthly credit card, and ATM statements thoroughly for fraudulent charges. If your noticing transactions you didn't charge, or purchase. Contact the bank, and credit card company to flag these purchases to receive your money back, and cancel your card and receive a new one.

    why not have each attendant check all pumps for skimmers before each shift ? i remember having to take the numbers from each pump before each shift .So its logical to check for skimmers before each shift

    So google can take a picture from a satellite miles above earth and see the pack of smokes on a picnic table, but a security camera at a gas station can barely tell the make of car that pulls up - or if the passengers are male or female. That could have been trained circus bears coming out of that car for all the good security cameras did. Should have hooked up tasers to the inside of those machines or at least done something to catch those douchebags in real time.

    This is why people need texts alerts from your bank or credit card company. This has happened to me where someone stole my card info like this but i always catch it right away because of my texts alerts and notify my bank to cancel my card. They usually test the waters first and try buying something small to see if it works but because i get alerts for everything i purchases, i know when a purchase is not done by me. I've talked to so many people about this and they don't use the services because they find the alerts annoying or assume it wont happen to them.

    • @riverjordan2725
      @riverjordan2725 Před rokem

      A guy said that a single penny was used at a store he'd never even heard of by a thief who cloned his credit card information. He got an alert and cancelled his credit card. I agree with you when you said that thieves will start off small to see if Victim is paying attention and that everyone should have alerts.
