Making a Clear Gel with Carbomer

Carbomer is a polymer that will swell when in contact with water. It can be used to thicken the water for a lotion or making a gel base for a skin serum or hair styling.
Carbomer will thicken when the pH is around neutral. A neutral pH is 7.
Carbomer by nature is acidic and the water needs to be neutral or it will not thicken.
Only a small amount of Carbomer is needed (0.2-0.5%) to make a thick gel.
Add distilled water into a glass beaker (200g) and test the water for it's pH (our distilled water here has a pH of 6). Add a neutralizing agent such as TEA (triethanolamine) to increase the pH to neutral (ph7), which is the dark green color (3 drops were added for this quantity).
Stir well.
Add Carbomer (0.8g) and mix well with a sheer mixer, homogenizer or like here with a stick blender, take your time until fully hydrated. It will start to thicken instantly.
This is now a good base to add additional ingredients such as PVP for making a medium hold hair gel or active ingredients for making a serum gel.
Carbomer is an all-around easy thickener, non tacky, simple with no rub-off. We love it!

Is the carbopol and carbomer, both are same?
Pay attention to chemical substances names, TEA stands for Triethylamine, TEOA stands for Triethanolamine.

Both triethylamine and triethanolamine are commonly abbreviated as TEA. Triethylamine is not used in cosmetics though as it has an extremely pungent fish-like odor.
Yes, adding preservative like phenoxyethanol is recommended.

You may try to see whether it still works without TEA, but usually TEA is needed.

+Bingxin Zhang . Thank you, you can increase the amount of Carbomer to 0.5-1% for example for a very thick gel. More neutralizer will be necessary, just measure the pH around 6 is perfect.

I used 8oz 91% alcohol, 2oz distilled water 0.20 oz carbopol 940. Used a screen to slowly drop the chemical into the glass bowl and used a immersion blender until all the white was dissolved. Worked great. Now how do i get the air bubbles out lol . Turns out if you add 2 tsp of glycerin and shake it up for a few, that the air bubbles can slide to the top. My recipe's Total alcohol percentage is 70.45% for this recipe.
Air bubbles occur through the mixing process especially if the stirrer isn't submerged fully but kept on the surface so that air can get into the mixture. Once air bubbles are trapped in the gel, it's very hard to get rid of them.

Yes, you can add fragrances. The duration on how long they last on the skin depends on the type of fragrances

I made a handsanitizer gel of 70%isopropyl alcohol...at the end of the formulation.. a gel was formed however on adding TEA it separated
Bummer! Alcohol is liquid gold these days. Mixing the gel and the isopropyl should be the very last step. The TEA is added directly to the gel formulation to neutralize it, after which the alcohol is added. BTW, how much gel are you using? If you're adding more than 10% gel to 70% isopropyl you're not getting enough alcohol in your formulation to protect you. I assume you'll also want some pure essential oils or other skin-nourishing additives. All said and done, though, you must have 60% alcohol or more in your FINAL formulation for your sanitizer to meet WHO standards, 70% to meet medical standards. Much health and safety to you and yours!

No, this is for external use only but not ingestion. Lips are ok. Extracts are typically added at 5-0%

Actually its better to first dilute the carbomer powder then add the triethaolamine in other to prevent lumps. A concern that i have is when i add surfactants the gel turns thin, almost like water, then i try to adjust again the ph but no results. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!
Adding surfactants to a carbomer gel is a challenge. Some will work, some not.

HI, thanks for the video. We're having trouble forming a gel. We've been adding Carbomer 940 to a mix of water and isopropyl alcohol, which forms a thin gel THEN adding TEA. When we add the TEA, the mixture instantly becomes much less viscous - practically water consistency - and goes very milky. Should we be adding the TEA to the water/alcohol mix before adding the carbomer, as shown in your video?
Also, what's the final pH of the gel? If you take the liquid to around 7pH and add Carbomel, isn't that going to make the final gel acidic?
We recommend to first make a gel using water, carbomer, and TEA, and only then add isopropyl alcohol.

A 100% clear gel is almost always only possible if there are no other ingredients than water and carbomer. As soon as other ingredients are added (especially botanicals) the gels starts becoming opaque.

It depends on what you are trying to make. If you're trying to make a
hair pomade, a gelling thickener may not be your best bet and may be why
you're getting flakes. Most water-based pomades contain oils and waxes
to thicken it rather than something like carbopol. PVP is usually added
at about 5%. Hope this helps.
By adding glycolic acid the pH will drop significantly, so that the gel formation will likely break apart. Carbomer needs a high pH in order to form a gel.

Please use a spatula for mixing, don't do that thing of moving your hand, it is just bad when you have a beaker.

Polysorbate 20 is a very popular solubilizer for essential oils for example, and it gives pretty clear to slightly hazy solutions. However the higher content of essential oils the higher the chance it will get a bit cloudy. Use the polysorbate 20 in proportion to the essential oils - eg. if using 0.5% essential oils use 0.5% polysorbate 20 solubilizer.

hi i made wine gel with carbomer and wine in place of water and it was quiet thivk.and transparent. but when i add essential oil with polysorbate 20 and phenoxy ethanol the gel becomes opaque. how to get a clear gel?
Once oils and an emulsifier are added to the water, an emulsion is formed which almost always turns the mixture to an opaque gel. There is no way to make it clear again.

That's as clear as it gets. It never gets 100% crystal clear due to the polymerization of the carbomer.

It's not that carbomer loses its thickening properties completely at a pH of 5.5, but it is reduced somewhat. The lower the pH the less thickening effect. If you want to use a similar thickener for a low-pH product we recommend to use GelMaker Powder (www.makingcosmetics.com/GelMaker%C2%AE-Powder_p_948.html)
what kind of ph test strips are you using pls what is the range

0-6 here www.makingcosmetics.com/pH-Indicator-Roll-0-6_p_338.html. If we know it's probably going to be more acidic we're using the 0-6, If we have no clue we start with the 0-13 first then get a more precise result with using the 0-6 (if the first test showed it's below 7).

Sorbitol as a moisturizer can be added at around 1-2%.
Here is my problem with carbomer, upon using it the first time the gel is good, however when i use the powder after a week or a month, the powder it produces becomes a grainy gel, why so?
For the best results hydrate the powder well, then neutralize to pH 6.5-7, then sheer mixing or homogenizing for a smooth texture.
Can carbomer be used to make fabric softener
