Reconquista - The Full History

  • The history of the Reconquista was a 781 year medieval journey. It was the story of the Christian War of Reconquest against Islamic Spain. A struggle that was not always constant or consistent. The Christian kingdoms of the northern Iberian Peninsula held their ground, clinging to survival. In time, as the initiative shifted and the great Caliphate fell; Asturias, Leon, Castile, Navarre, Aragon, and Portugal would have the chance to press the offensive. They were hampered along the way by the Almoravids and later the Almohads - and of course fought amongst themselves. This video covers the full history up till the year 1212 and the famous Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa. As requested, all the individual parts were put together for this one continuous piece. Enjoy!

As requested I took all six videos on the Reconquista and stitched them together into one big one. Its over an hour long! If you like it, please share on social media or share it with that special someone who would love to listen about this insanely awesome time period. Definitely pass it along to some who is from Asturias, Leon, Navarre, Aragon, Portugal, Castile, or Andalucia! All the best in the mean time. Episode 10: Reconquista - The Next Generation, is already under production!

mostly because Black legend spread by the english and dutch, also the reconquista wasnt a 700 year period of war, its period was more precisely from the fall of the visigothic kingdom up to the fall of the caliphate of Cordoba, with the Almoravids in the middle ending with the battle of navas de tolosa, after that the only thing left was Granada which was a vassal state of Castilla

It is good to see history but still these people seem to strategically pick our history apart with every channel, show, movie or commentary on our histories. Lots of personal bias and the typical English propaganda bs that runs rampant here of trying to always criticize our histories every step of the way. It is cutting lots of accuracy out and time to dedicate to valuable historical facts and events to know about and more leaving a dehumanizing distaste. N.duero river valley is not an "arid wasteland" hahaha... some parts might have some arid stuff in it, but it is not actually truly what he described. We like these documentaries because we do not see much else, we got to research and truly make our own.

As the Spaniard adage goes "Spain is Asturias and the rest is conquered Land." This is the reason why even the modern day Spanish royalty enshrines itself with tittles such as the Prince or Princess of Asturias. In fact, it was this justification that lead to the attempted conquest of North Africa, which was once in Visigoth possession

Very happy to find this; the Reconquista was a major part of my independent college experience for me. I've had to learn Spanish in school since I was 5 but I never liked it until I linked linguistics to geography, culture, and history. I taught myself Portuguese too and recognized the Reconquista as the birth of the modern world; had it not been for the Reconquista our world today would not exist. It was not Spain, but Portugal, that began it all, but Spain truly brought the world together. I became very happy to realize that the linguistic origin of my name is not Italian, though I ethnically am, but it is either Portuguese or Spanish. I belong to this culture, these world-creators!

With all the respect that my fellow Iberian neighbors deserve ( Gallegos, Castellanos, Bascos, Catalanes, Valencianos, Andaluces y lós demas) Hispania is not only SPAIN. And SPAIN is not a single nation.
PORTUGAL deserves the same or maybe more brightness on the reconquista.
We are not part or heirs of Spain. The SPAIN and PORTUGAL are brothers in arms, no of them is above the other.
And in the reconquista Portugal was the first to finish the process 250 years before Spain that was not SPAIN year but several different kingdoms like Aragón and Castile y Leon. And PORTUGAL is PORTUGAL since 1128.

There are about 800 castles in Castile because the region was a buffer between the 2 sides so all settlements became heavily fortified, some taken by the other faction just a few miles away in a game of constant take, lose, and retake of strongholds for 300 years. Its not true that Castile was a desert back then. In fact it was a forest. More like Riverland of Game Of Thrones. It got transformed into a desert when Castile became a maritime empire, so they ended up chopping all trees to make ships, ¿Remember the Armada?. The Cid poem talks about "the forest of Corpes", where now you see just one tree every few miles on a completely flat wasteland. No wonder the showdown scene from "the good the bad and the ugly" was filmed in Castile.

Sure they chopped plenty of trees for the Spanish Armada, but I have my doubts concerning the Castilian forest. I had also heard about the ancient forests, but I suspect it's a bit of a myth. The climate is dry and with very high and very low temperatures, not ideal for forests and even less for oak (the wood you need for building ships), which grows in the green Cantabrian strip (modern day Asturias, Cantabria and Basque country) and mountain areas in the Iberian range, but not in the Castilian dry plains.

Be enslaved for 700 years or allow the most sacred creed of the early Christian faith to be tainted & manipulated solely to fit the political ambitions of a man that had self proclaimed himself god on earth? For those Catholics unfamiliar with the history of our faith that you may still practice I'm referring to an event known as "the great schism" and was the decisive & unmendable split of the western Catholics and Eastern Orthodox churches. Both were one church for 700ish years until the Pope changed the creed of Nicaea..
The Orthodox claimed it was a blasphemous desecration of the holy Scripture to add Jesus (the son) onto the divine relationship between the Father and the holy spirit creating what we now know as the holly Trinity. Jesus would have been appalled by this and would have condemned this act like the Orthodox Church did. We need to remember the New testament wasn't created until centuries after Jesus died therefore what is written on yhe Old testament (the Tanakh to be precise) is what Jesus believed in as well as what ge meticulously studied and preached to his followers. Elevating jesus to the same status as god breaks the first and most important of the ten commandments which Jesus would have greatly condemned us for.
The history of the church is very dark, controversial and overall fascinating yet for me learning about it came at the risk of my religious beliefs, certainty and total outrage

How do you pick topics for videos? I have an idea for a video/series that doesn't seem covered in the current spread of youtube animated history channels, based around steppe riders throughout history from the spread of technology and religion across the steppe, the creation of the spoked wheel, trade with great bronze age empires, through to the Scythians, Huns, Mongols, Turks and the empires and cultural centres they created like Sassarkand. The great pasture of the Steppe made it the greatest invasion route for nomadic people's right up to the gunpowder age, toppled many empires and if we look back far enough to the domestication of the horse, possibly the first use of stirrups. The Kurgans that still stretch from the Donbass valley in Ukraine to the borders of China fascinate me. Anyway maybe something interesting to piece together.

    • @FlashPointHx
      @FlashPointHx  Před 4 lety +2

I pick items that are a bit out of my comfort zone. The current video you are watching is Episode 9 - if you go back to Epi 1, I explained bit more about where I came up with the concept of this video series. This was supposed to be about the Aztec and Cortez - But I ended up starting the story with the rise of Islam.

whoever put this together ... thank you.. whatever happened happened ... I like the straightforward manner in which you presented the material and bravo on the graphics too! The presentation was mainly on the battles and such ... perhaps at another time he can present the things that the moors brought to Spain .... however, the inherent danger in that is that it can become a merry-go-round of who did this and that or who invented such and such... This was a straight forward approach on the battles and beginnings of the Reconquista period....

Well, they never really did stop. If they could they would continue with their religious obligation to wage jihad. The thing is they can't. The West has basically dominated the Islamic world for the better part of two centuries. The ottoman scourge is no longer at the gate, so to speak. Muslim armies aren't a threat in the same way to Europe as they used to be. But the mentality that fuels that hatred towards the west is very much alive and present in the minds of many devout and believing Muslims. There is a deep seated contempt in their minds towards the west. The thing is we as westerners have by and large forgotten that Islam has been the historical enemy of Christendom and still remains hostile to this day, but now that hatred is mostly geared toward a secular West.
ISIS, boko haram, al-Qaeda, Hizb ut-Tahrir, HAMAs, Hezbollah, and the scores of other Islamic terror groups operating around the world are merely a continuation of the same jihad that was initiated by Muhammad and his successors.
