Hey man . Good to see your getting some time to crank out some vids. Guessing more is to come?
@@tysonclark5974 Oh yeah - I'm going to continue to work with Robin on this and at the same time will finish up the 4th crusade
Yeah it is tragic, I tell all my friends about FPH. Been watching him for about 3 yrs now, my favorite history channel

Oh my God, YES! I cannot believe that we are finally getting animated version of podcast of History of Byzantium...... *cough* Eastern Rome *cough* .....and that it is going to be done in such magnificent animation style. As someone who just recently stumbled on your CZcams channel, I must admit that I'm really impressed with your work. Keep the good work! 😄
Your so welcome - I can tell just by your avatar alone you’re a big eastern Roman Empire (cough) byzantine fan :) - happy you liked the video
It's certainly an interesting podcast, but I would find myself lost without the visual aids of this youtube video.
@@colinbisasky1134 Know how you feel - I rarely buy a book on history that doesn't have a map or maps.
Agreed! * cough *cough! LOL But I mean it! 😊😊😊
@@FlashPointHx Actually, the Roman Empire is a more accurate term, more so than Eastern Roman Empire, since the empire was reunified administratively into 1 entity in 480 CE by Emperor Zeno, after Julius Nepos died.
Legit my FAVORITE history youtuber has teamed up with one of the GREATEST history podcasters ever. This is gonna be amazing
Awesome comment - let me know what you think of it when you get to the end
Oh this hit the spot. Justinian is one of the most badass, ‘come what may I’m coming forward swinging’-type leaders in history. (As long as his lady was behind him)
Yeah! Talk about a power couple
By lady you mean whore?
Oh fantastic, I was really waiting for this one. This just made this cold grey day much better. I've been expanding into early and middle byzantine history, since I felt I didn't give it the same attention I give pre-theodosius I roman history or late byzantinehistory. A Flashpoint series on it, is an absolutely ideal starter. Can't wait for the next video in this journey. Great job.
My pleasure bear - always good to see your comments that Avatar of yours

This is the most detailed video on Justinian I have ever watched. Usually the videos on Justinian only talk about the Nika revolt and the wars in Italy and against the Persians. It was so interesting 👍👍
Hey Maria! Good to see your comment - this is just the beginning -we go into the Renavatio Imperii after this!
This channel reignited my love for history during the pandemic period. Thank you so much!
You have no idea how good that makes me feel - loving hearing about people getting back into history
@@Zeerich-yx9po life and shit got in the way :/
The Total War shots in there are phenomenal. Great video!
This is so excellently well done, very much looking forward to the next installment.
Thank you very much! I'll reach out to Robin for the next couple of podcasts and will have something up soon
Oh my goodness...... what a delight. Mike Duncan's The History of Rome is my all time favorite podcast, with The History of Byzantium being my second favorite podcast of all time. I have listened to both of them at least four or five times. It's such a wonderful treat to hear your calm voice again - Robin Pierson - on CZcams. I know I'm going to enjoy this series. You have brought me so much knowledge - this has made my day.
Thank you for posting this! There is so much history out there, more than we will ever know.
Hey thanks so much Richard !
@@FlashPointHx I like your voice, too. I find it pleasant to listen to. I'm curious: did the Byzantines consider themselves "Roman" or was it more of a way to bind themselves to the Roman Empire? Sort of like, uh, The Holy Roman Empire, which was really in name only.
@@RichardThomas-vu1bf They definitely thought of themselves as Roman. Even those that came after them would mold themselves as being Ceasars. Byzantine was just a name given to them by 19th century historians.
@@FlashPointHx Thank you.
I just wanna thank you , you have a very wonderful voice of narration and I am listening and watching to all your podcast while I’m Recovering out of my hip shoulder surgery.
I'm happy that my videos are part of your healing process - I'm hoping a speedy recovery for you Yahya
Absolutely amazing. Are you gonna continue this collaboration with Robin chronologically? I would love to see the Episode about the Final War done in this fashion, one of my favorite podcast episodes of all time.
Yeah I'm working on the next Hx of Byzantium now
Great series! Always been more intrigued with Eastern Rome than pretty much any other empire throughout history.
Byzantium is one of the most complex, weird, and little known side of roman history!
I’m surprised it doesn’t get more press
I see you went back to the basics of animation, music and overall design. And let me tell you, never change a winning team. Amazing and engaging episode without all those weird fancy 3D character models. It's much more personal seeing the paintings of these amazing historical characters.
Thats good feed back - yes, the more authentic images I can find the more I will use.
I kinda liked some of those, over a still picture for an extended period. But yeah well done.
How did I not know they turned this into a video series? I love the podcast.
Absolutamente maravilhoso, que grandioso documentário. Adoro ver e aprender cada vez mais. Obrigada pela excelente divulgação.
Muito obrigado pelo gentil comentário! Fico feliz que tenha gostado do meu vídeo!
Wow. I’ve seen a lot, I mean a whole lot of documentaries on Rome and Byzantium (because I’m a huge history nerd) but I actually heard myself say (at least a few times): “I didn’t know that.” Thanks dude! Subscribed!
Good to hear that T. Panda, and to have another history buff subscribe - plus your name totally cracks me up!
Me, too - I love it when I learn something new. Too many history videos just re-hash the old, very basic, introductory material over and over again.🙂
Very important history event when Hercalius of Byzantine Empire read letter from Prophet (PBUH), listen to complete event @ [ Link: czcams.com/video/w9JeDdTrPus/video.html ]

Thank you Sam! Haven’t seen one of your comments in a bit - happy to see you again
This video is absolutely brilliant. I love the narration in particular. Please get this guy to do the rest, he is the best by far tbh
Thanks! You should download the podcast - there are 200+ other episodes
@FlashPointHx where can I go for that?
That was really well explained, I was concentrated from the beginning to the end of the video, and everything was clear in my mind (no questions except for what happened in today's Yemen).
Very good job sir, thanks for your amazing work !
Appreciate the comment - really happy you enjoyed it. Yemen would soon be incorporated into the Caliphate

Justinian always amazed me. He did just about everything that you should not do, but somehow turned it into success.
It s good to be the king
He finished the state’s money. After he lwft there wwre no money to finance the maintenancw of the twrritories.
He did great work with the law though . Basil did more foe resources he had.

Thank you so so much for your work. I have benefited greatly from it, you created a gate to the ancient world and my heart is throbbing to enter!
Wonderful! You're on Vol 1 - let me know what you think when you get caught up with the latest vid =)
I have been waiting for this wi5h great anticipation!
This is really excellent, thank you. The Byzantines have really started to captivate me. They're strange in that they lasted a millennium and yet it just feels like the dirge was always in the background, an empire perpetually wrong-footed, chronically surmounting one foe just for history to say "this isn't even my final form." The Byzantines swam upstream for longer than many empires richer than they even existed, threw themselves against the rocks of history, and when true death came they met it with a sword a unique indignation. One of the great stories in the library of civilizations.
Gods this was such an epic comment - much appreciated on this end Jacob
They were obsessed with religion.
I just wanna thank you , you have a very wonderful voice of narration. This is the first time i saw video
Outstanding history telling!

OMG! HOLY F-ING MOLY! I CAN NOT BELIEVE THIS HAS ACTUALLY HAPPENED! You two are literally MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE (NOT only podcasters, but all around) people of all time! Flash Point has always in my opinion had among the very best maps out there, and I'm a total map freak and collector. And Robin has got an absolutely spectacular voice. You BOTH do a wonderful job in your presentations of the history you cover. You BOTH make knowing and understanding history easy and exciting for everyone from the novice to expert. You BOTH cover some of my favorite periods in history, especially that if the Eastern Romans. I CAN NOT GET ENOUGH OF THE BYZANTINES. Thank you guys for teaming up and making the absolute best possible ( maybe only the addition of Mike Duncan could have possible made this collaboration better) super podcast team ever. Are there prequel videos to these too? It mentions some prior history, yet I see two different Byzantium streams and am not sure where to best start. Thank you! Love the topic and production.
So this is a first an podcast - we turned a bunch of the episodes in the middle into video. If you go to Robin's website you can download the other 280+ episodes
I listen to this podcast all the time, nice collab
I can see why he’s so popular - it’s a great topic and an awesome voice with a good cadence
This is one of your best videos in my opinion along with the series on the Black Death. There's very little speculation or comparison to modern world events and people which I very much prefer. You managed to masterfully cram as much information and facts into the script while keeping it both easy to follow and entertaining. Good luck with your future videos!
Happy you liked it - wait till the next one where Justinian gets going into the Renavatio Imperii
@@FlashPointHx This is already panning out to be the best and most detailed documentary series on 6th century Byzantium at least on YT. Speaking as someone who's more familiar with this part of history than any other period that I can think of and who's also read Procopius' Secret Histories. I'm certain that you've already surpassed every larger historical channel that has covered this topic as well. Hope you're doing well.
Dope I can confirm
Thanks! Byzantine history has always been a clear gap in my history knowledge.
High quality work. You have a new subscriber. Ill rally the rest of my nerds under your banner. Thank you!
Nice Scott! Rally the Nerds!!! I look forward on the dawn of the 5th day to look towards the east!
Fantastic video keep it up your doing amazing job
Will do!
For anyone wanting to read historical fiction on this period, there are two novels by Stella Duffy. Theodora: Actress, Empress, Whore, followed the The Purple Shroud.
It is centred more on Theodora than Justinian, but covers the period from the reign of Justin to Theodora's death, and includes everything from the Nika Riots to the Monophysite schism. I find that Eastern Roman history is very underrepresented in film and literature so I was glad to find this.
Theodora’s life would make an incredible series! 💕
@@buttercxpdraws8101 Absolutely! I am surprised it hasn't been done yet. There are many individuals and eras from Byzantine history that would make a great feature film or series. They could do a series on the Macedonians (the dynasty), like the Borgias and Tudors TV series.
If you like podcasts, there is an excellent podcast on here by Eva Schubert, on the Great Schism. Four parts. She has other podcasts, I love them all but the Great Schism is my favourite. She also happens to be from my city :)
Then there is "Belisarius" by Robert Graves -very entertaining!

Brilliant, simply brilliant
This is excellent, I love Byzantine History, Justinian was the door from the ol to the modern and set Byzantium to survive in the coming years, though his spending did damage
He was an impressive leader - loved or hated he was respected - I question what would have happened had the plague not come - would he have been able to re-unite the empire?
There is no such thing as "Byzantine". Stop the lies

That was interesting. Thank you.
Welcome Rose !
Justinian spoke Latin as his entire village, yet he was next to modern day Skopje,a fully Greek fortified city,so the Greek language was common to hear but difficult to spell as it is today...
One little mistake, at 29:35 the “schytian monks” were not from the Wild greater schythia but actually from the Roman province of Schytia minor located in modern day Dobrogea, (Vitalian was born there too, both the monks and Vitalian were Latinised thracians/dacians)
So super .. Enjoyed every second every moment Of the episode
Nice!

Thank you so much!! Happy to have you here now!
Flash Point History - Thanks. Looking forward to many more great videos! 👍
Great Video! It would be nice to have a bibliography in the description. I also think you may have given Procopius 'Secret History' more gravitas then it probably deserves. As you know, historians sometimes differ in their interpretation of sources, and that's what makes the discipline so exciting. There is a new translation that I think you'd really enjoy. 'Prokopios The Secret History with Related Texts' by Anthony Kaldellis, If you haven't read it already that is! :)
Check out Robin's website - he has his Biblio there
MUSIC: I keep on looking for the name of the first music theme heard in this video. It is also as the carthaginian music theme for Europa Barbarorum II. Can you please tell em the name of it?
It’s called the ‘Peak of Atlas’ by Omri Lahav from the 0AD soundtrack

A minor point: The Hagia Sophia that we know had not been built yet during Justin's reign, so the Blues' murder and the pope's visit must have been in an earlier Byzantine basilica, which may have also sometimes been called Hagia Sophia.

Justinian's doom was nostalgia. His looking at the world as it used to be in the past, blinded hem to the world which was really going to be...
He had ambition but he failed and set his empire up for failure. I wonder if he had been more successful - had the plague not come - he truest accomplished the renavatio imperii - would history have been kinder to his legacy.
