    / donda
    open.spotify.com/album/5CnpZV...
    Donda is the tenth studio album by American rapper Kanye West, released through GOOD Music on August 29, 2021, with distribution handled by Def Jam Recordings, his last release with the label. West recorded much of the material at multiple locations in the summer of 2021, including Bighorn Mountain Ranch in Wyoming and Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. It features guest vocals from the Sunday Service Choir, Jay-Z, Playboi Carti, Lil Baby, the Weeknd, Vory, Kid Cudi, DaBaby, Baby Keem, and Marilyn Manson, among various others; vocals from Chris Brown were also included prior to the album being updated. West, BoogzDaBeast, Dem Jointz, Mike Dean, and Ojivolta primarily helmed its production.
    The initial version of Donda was initially set for release in July 2020, under the title of God's Country, but experienced multiple delays and continuous alterations to tracks and the tracklist prior to its final release. The album's style has been described variously as hip hop, gospel, progressive rap, and pop, and incorporates elements of trap and drill. It is both minimalist and maximalist, with darker lyrical content and the reduced use of drums in comparison to West's prior efforts. Themes explored include religion, Kanye's divorce from Kim Kardashian, and Donda West, whose forename is used for the title.
    Upon its release, Kanye West accused Universal Music Group of having released Donda without his approval, which the label denied. "Hurricane" was released as the lead single in September 2021, and was followed by both "Believe What I Say" and "Off the Grid" in November. The album received mixed reviews from music critics, who were mostly divided towards its cohesiveness. Some noted an improvement from West's previous work and praised the composition, though numerous reviewers criticized the long runtime. Donda was a nominee for both Album of the Year and Best Rap Album at the 64th Grammy Awards, while "Jail" and "Hurricane" both won for Best Rap Song and Best Melodic Rap Performance, respectively.

    DONDA is more about Kanye adjusting to life without his mother rather than a tribute to her. That’s why you’ll see him addressing different topics/subjects in his life, while many times using her as a filter through which he sees these things (e.g., Never Abandon Your Family). The album becomes much more complete as you see it as him filling the hole she left.

  • @vrishindutt2249
    @vrishindutt2249 Před 2 lety +1746

    There are several cool Easter eggs about the album:
    •Kanye saw the clock and it read 4:44 during one of the last Donda sessions and thought of putting JAY-Z on Jail. (Confirmed by Mike Dean)
    •The 808 pattern on God Breathed has similar inflections to "I know God breathed on this", so it's like a chant throughout.
    •In Jesus Lord, the number of voices in the choir saying Jesus Lord increases successively.
    •Moon was the reunion of Ratatat and Cudi after a while.
    •Kanye made all the people involved in the album and studio work do Bible studies everyday during the sessions.
    Although not his best work, the Donda era will be remembered more vividly by all Ye fans i believe.

    the explanation for the “globglogbab” sample in remote control is that on August 5, 2021, two weeks before Kanye’s third listening event, Dunkey hosted a parody leak livestream of Donda during which he played a fictional song called “Golden Money,” which proved to just be the Globglogabgalab’s famous song.
    This seemingly arbitrary reference aligns with the popular belief that Kanye spent time researching fan reactions online following multiple Donda listening events.

    • @Mason-lr5dz
      @Mason-lr5dz Před 2 lety +32

      I've seen this theory before and I seriously doubt Kanye knows who Dunkey is.
      Globglogabgalab is from a Christian allegorical film which I think is a far more likely place for Kanye to have derived the inspiration.

      It was most definitely because of Dunkey's video. The first time he played this outro at the end of remote control was during the third listening party which was after Dunkey's vid. Too close to be a coincidence

    • @MrMrJumpup
      @MrMrJumpup Před 2 lety +26

      @@Mason-lr5dz The sample used on the album is lifted directly from Grandayy's video. The video has Lil Pump's drums from Gucci Gang put over the Globglogbab song that you can hear in the background of the sample on the track. If he was just had seen the movie and wanted to use the song, he coulda taken it from the movie itself. Wouldn't make sense for Ye to take it from a random CZcams meme instead. It would also be one hell of a coincidence to use an obscure Christian movie that just happened to be a popular youtube meme a few years back as opposed to any of the other thousands of Christian movies with original music and wack lyrics that exist out there.

    To me Donda Chant is special because it's his mother's name said with many different inflections. At one point the voice sounds sweet and comforting (like a mother's love) and at other moments it sounds like someone yearning to see their loved ones who have passed once again. This is further reinforced in the Listening Parties where he was sitting down dressed in all black crying infront of thousands of people. Donda Chant was a moment of silence per se where the whole stadium was in complete silence and all you could hear was Donda's name. It was one of the most touching and heartbreaking moments of the entire show. It's a shame to me that it has been reduced to a joke and meme to the internet community. It's simple while being powerful. Kanye never got to mourn his mother's passing until this album.

    The first part of the album has kind of this dark, dystopian vibe to it while after Ok Ok the album takes on a more optimistic, hopeful tone and there are also more gospel inspired and religious elements to the album. You can especially see this by contrasting the first song and last song. It feels like a Kanye is lifting himself up from a dark place of grief through god and religion.
    Overall the album has this very grand, larger than life but also minimalistic and stripped back production which is probably my favourite aspect of the album besides the dystopian asthetic of the first part.
    There are a few songs like remote control, junya and tell the vision and all of the part 2 stuff and the strange rearranging of the album in the deluxe which really bog this album down. But if you pay enough attention the album is cohesive in some aspects especially production, while lyrically it is a mixed bag of some verses that could fit any album, others being fitting but kind of bland "Jesus is king" type verses (24 is severely underrated though, don't just dismiss it just because it's a gospel song. It's a homage to Kobe and his mother) and some which just belong (Andre 3000 The life of the party or Kanye on Jesus Lord, Come To Life). So overall I wouldn't really say that this album is "all over the place" or not cohesive.

    24 is one of my favorites off the album. Kanye's devotion to God is apparent and I love the sheer noise of the distorted choir. The music video is a nod to the video game "Only One" he was going to create out of respect for Donda and is generally a very surreal experience. I also think it's important to mention that the song is likely a reference to the late Kobe Bryant, a legend of basketball. Both Kobe and Donda helped shape Kanye and have instilled him with honest values. Donda as a project is very chaotic and loose for interpretation, similar to TLOP. I think Donda suffers from some "fat" songs that aren't interesting and partially detract from the religious and respectful themes of the album (Junya, Tell The Vision, pt 2 tracks). Other of my favorites include Moon, Come to Life, Heaven and Hell, Hurricane, Off The Grid, and Pure Souls. Make sure to show your Dad the deluxe tracks. I prefer the original order of the album, but the deluxe tracks (Life Of The Party, Up From The Ashes, etc.) are strong. Thank you for consistently putting out great content TTT and for inspiring my deep love for music and the deeper experience behind it.
