Kanye West - Donda
/ album .
open.spotify.com/album/5CnpZV...
Donda is the tenth studio album by American rapper Kanye West, released through GOOD Music on August 29, 2021, with distribution handled by Def Jam Recordings, his last release with the label. West recorded much of the material at multiple locations in the summer of 2021, including Bighorn Mountain Ranch in Wyoming and Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. It features guest vocals from the Sunday Service Choir, Jay-Z, Playboi Carti, Lil Baby, the Weeknd, Vory, Kid Cudi, DaBaby, Baby Keem, and Marilyn Manson, among various others; vocals from Chris Brown were also included prior to the album being updated. West, BoogzDaBeast, Dem Jointz, Mike Dean, and Ojivolta primarily helmed its production.
The initial version of Donda was initially set for release in July 2020, under the title of God's Country, but experienced multiple delays and continuous alterations to tracks and the tracklist prior to its final release. The album's style has been described variously as hip hop, gospel, progressive rap, and pop, and incorporates elements of trap and drill. It is both minimalist and maximalist, with darker lyrical content and the reduced use of drums in comparison to West's prior efforts. Themes explored include religion, Kanye's divorce from Kim Kardashian, and Donda West, whose forename is used for the title.
Upon its release, Kanye West accused Universal Music Group of having released Donda without his approval, which the label denied. "Hurricane" was released as the lead single in September 2021, and was followed by both "Believe What I Say" and "Off the Grid" in November. The album received mixed reviews from music critics, who were mostly divided towards its cohesiveness. Some noted an improvement from West's previous work and praised the composition, though numerous reviewers criticized the long runtime. Donda was a nominee for both Album of the Year and Best Rap Album at the 64th Grammy Awards, while "Jail" and "Hurricane" both won for Best Rap Song and Best Melodic Rap Performance, respectively.
I think a perfect song for you guys to fit in somehow would be Only One from Kanye and Paul McCartney. Especially hearing how much you guys enjoy his relationship with his mom, he released it on New Year’s Eve years back an it’s just a beautiful song about/from his mom and his daughter. Always makes me tear up listening to it.
One of the best ye songs forsurw

No why, mid af song. It sounds like he just picked up a track from the cutting room floor of 808s and had McCartney get on ot

Life of The Party for me was the best track on the album, everytime I listen to it I am fighting to hold back my tears. It really is everything you expect from the concept of Donda.

Andre 3000's verse on Life of the Party was my favorite verse of the whole year, at least. The lyrics are so poignant, and his flow and delivery are insane. And it just has a special quality to it. You guys probably said it best -- it's everything you wanted the most out of this album.

I love No Child Left Behind because it feels like the calm after the storm of Come to Life
exactly. i think it perfectly wraps up the album
I enjoy its placement as well. It's like the exit music to a tribute, memorial, waking...
*I never think of it as the last song, just the perfect cut off before I hop out the whip so that later when I get in & start the engine... Boom. Bam. Dooooooon duh, Donda begins again.*
i agree. i didn’t agree with kevin and connor that come to life would’ve been a good close to the album
yea i feel like those two songs belong together.
yeah even in my playlist of donda songs I kept come to life into no child left behind, it feels like the calm after ascending into heaven
Just a little note about Tell The Vision: rumour has it that Kanye only put it on the album so that Pop Smoke’s family would receive royalties from the album and also redirects people to listen to the real version on Pop Smoke’s album so they make more money from that too. It was just a throwaway track to get them some money. It makes sense but just rumours ultimately
The real version is actually really good, and I’m probably one of the few people who had heard it before donda because I was a pop smoke fan (faith really sucked) so I was really surprised and even more disappointed then most people when I heard it on donda

but as connor said, there are so many other ways he could’ve done it he didn’t have to make it bad lol
@@pddimez8485 in a way though, it being bad kind of got it more attention. If it was just a good instrumental, nobody would talk about it. For example, how many people are online talking about Donda (track 15, not the album). Tell the Vision was almost a meme, getting it more attention and more streams
@@pddimez8485 its not really bad though i guess thats where personal opinions come in but it seemed more like an interlude
I think a "Dad Reacts to Kanye - Non-Album Singles + Iconic Features" video could be cool. You can show your dad Mercy, New God Flow, Clique, Don't Like Remix, the Paul McCartney songs Only One, FourFiveSeconds, and All Day, Champions, Forever, Ye vs. the People, Christmas In Harlem, maybe even songs from Big Sean's Dark Sky Paradise One Man Can Change The World and his remix of Blessings, or his posthumous collabs with XXXTENTACION, maybe even I Love It with Lil Pump or Lift Yourself for a laugh
You're missing White Dress which Is one of his best songs
I hope we will see this episode one day
That is such a great idea!!
and also best unreleased/leaks!
This, and Ye’s leaked/unreleased tracks.
Also gotta have the Brit Awards performance of All Day. An absolute all-timer.
The Donda rollout with the listening parties is probably my favorite thing any artist has ever done. It was so exciting as a fan watching live not knowing what was coming next with additions or subtractions to the songs and rearranging the track list, plus the performance art aspects made it as a whole such a unique and immersive experience.
More huge artists should do it imo but actually release the album after them like The Weeknd did with Dawn FM, the imagery of those listening parties helps you understand the vibe of the albums
Kanye is the goat for that
Agreed. It's heard to even listen to the album w/out knowledge of those visuals in the roll-out. Completely impacts the album experience.
@@oghustles that’s why other artists should follow suit, the only one I’ve seen try anything similar is the Weeknd

One of my favorite parts of the Netflix Doc was when Kanye started getting more famous and the narrator said:
“It seemed the bigger Kanye got, the more he had Donda around”
and it cut to them backstage or something hugging and laughing and it just showed how special their relationship was ❤️
Shout out coodie “and then Kanye said”
Every time i hear that "I don't wanna die alone" i get teared up, without fail. You can really feel the desperation in his voice, it really feels like a reminder that the stuff you hear on his life isn't for the tabloids, his wife left him, his kids are in the midst of a custody battle, his mother is gone, he can't trust most people, etc. It's like when you're crying and your brain keeps repeating something in desperation that just brings you further down, that kinda of cry that has you rocking back and forth and you're just pleading "I don't wanna die alone, I don't wanna die alone" really heartbreaking stuff to hear from him of all people

I'm an atheist. But "Jesus Lord" is one of the single pieced of Christian media that actually makes me rethink my thoughts. It sounds so healing, Gesaffelstein really nailed...
Plus Larry Hoover Jr.'s depoiment at the end is heartbreaking....
love this song because it gives reasoning to why people find faith, or how to heal people who are hurting so badly
I’m surprised Gesaffelstein produced that, it doesn’t sound like his production
It’s not too late to repent and convert to Christianity brotha
gesafelstein worked on it?
@@bestshortclips18 pls no
come to life means so much to me. its one of the best songs ever and top five kanye songs period.every time i listen to it i cry. kanye told us about his desire for another life, wishing he had listened more to kims dreams, problems, and aspirations. he talked about his bipolar emotion about her presence and absence, but regardless saying he doesn't wanna die alone without her . he treats his kids (silver-linings) as the most important people in his life and the one thing holding him together amid a divorce. that song is perfect to me
Donda is one of my favorite kanye albums. I always put it on when I’m in a dark place and for whatever reason it helps me feel better
It’s basically a gospel album ❣️❣️
Christ is just trying to reach out to you
I have some complicated opinions on it quality-wise and even though it’s clearly one of his most flawed projects it’s probably my favorite he’s ever released
Moon and come to life are one of My favorite songs ever.
It’s important to remember: A song doesn’t have to explicitly mention Donda to be connected to her impact on Kanye’s life.
As much as Kanye has gotten better at dealing with the death of his mother, I think he still has a very difficult time talking about it. There’s some mentions here and there, but I don’t think it’s possible for him to make an entire album centered around that. I sure as fuck wouldn’t be able to with one of my parents, so I don’t judge. What he CAN do is “keep her spirit alive” by making the music he wants to make and acknowledging the confidence she gave him to do what he loves. Kanye making this album with the media shitstorm going on is a tribute to Donda instilling that spirit in him.
Also, Hurricane is very much connected to the themes of the album. It doesn’t mention Donda, but she’s in there.

the thing is this album is just more complex and has way more themes than these dudes imagined it would. they thought it would just be some song after song dedication to his mom when it's a snap shot of his life at the time he made it, like all his albums are. they're self portraits. they mentioned it but that's really key.
Well said

And in some, we need the majority lmao.
Gotta go with Aquemini
I think you guys missed the mark here in terms of the theme of the album. Calling it Donda doesn’t necessarily mean that he is going to tell his life story and talk about how much he loves his mother in every song, and I think Kevin’s expectation for that might have overshadowed what the album actually focused on. The album is about his faith and the loss he’s experienced, and Donda is the central theme behind those two. This album was written during his divorce with Kim, and many of the songs center around this loss and how it has only made him feel the loss of his mother more deeply. I also think No Child Left Behind is a great close to the album. I recommend watching Kanye’s performance of this song at the Donda listening party, where he “ascends to heaven.” The song represents his passing and ultimate reunion with his mother, hence “no child left behind”. It’s a release of the pain he talks about throughout the album.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. It was tough listening to them at the end negatively dwelling on their false expectations of the album instead of simply appreciating it for what was, without judgment. You can sense that they are uncomfortable with the themes of God/Faith (ie: JIK reaction). I would even go as far to say they subconsciously reject it. For this reason, I feel they already had put this album in a box before even having listened to it. Donda simply hits different if your Christian. It will always be strange watching reactions like these with those who are not aligned with faith.
@@Twpg204 yea you explained it beautifully Bro. Me being Christian even though I think JIK is Kanye’s worst album of all time because of the music preformance, I didn’t even finish there JIK reaction because of how uncomfortable I was not gonna lie. Like yes the music is mediocre and Kanye isn’t. that’s what makes the album bad but them rejecting the album straight away because of their views is jus weird idk. I’m Christian myself and yeats “money so big” says I got the devil on my phonee he tell me keep doing this shitttt and I’m sorry THAT GOES CRAZY 😂 even tho I rebuke those words The actual MUSIC like melody beat etc is good i can’t deny it. I wish they did that with donda because it’s actually good music. To each there own opinion though
@@Twpg204 I agree, but with that being said, I’m personally agnostic and I still emotionally connect with the album. Faith is something I don’t feel with respect to a god, but it’s something I feel in other spiritual ways, and I can relate to Kanye through that. I think anyone can feel and relate to his emotion and his vulnerability regarding his faith regardless of their religious beliefs.
One of my main criticisms I’ve had with the album has been the lack of a consistent “theme”. You broke it down in such a way that made so much sense I’m starting to reconsider that thought. As I was thinking the theme was gonna be the loss of his mother, the theme is loss in general. Well done and well said.
Dam u opening a whole new perspective for new kanye fans and even old ones as myself. I couldn't have said it better.
Watching your guys progression not just in exposure to different albums but as a channel since the first Kanye reaction has been amazing.
Seeing Kevin get to grips with Kanye’s sound, yet quickly learning to expect the unexpected is humbling and helps remind me how I should approach new music. Keep doing what you’re doing. I’m here for a Jay-Z marathon next.
Album of life. You will never be able to appreciate Donda unless you listen to it multiple times. There’s some throwaways and I’ve reordered it to be more cohesive based on my preferences and it’s simply amazing. Based on Kevin’s mild reaction in part 1, either he wasn’t focused or too hung up on structure. I still think at Kevin’s age and being a father, he will appreciate Donda way more as time goes on if he commits.
Same, bro. I just thought that a better tracklisting would have made it much better, so I did it myself. Anyways, as it is, it is not like a bad album or something, but you can feel it lose some of his potential.
czcams.com/video/3lUp2C0pS_Y/video.html
Finally it's here YES..
Same, kinda funny how many people reorder the album
Imo the track list is perfect and decides the album into two halves thematically and structurally.

I am once again petitioning Conor to curate a playlist of Kanye’s best leaks/unreleased tracks for Kevin now that you’ve gone through his official discography. The sample on Slave Name needs to pass his ears.
edit - Can’t Look in My Eyes will melt Kevin’s brain too. Do it Conor!

lowkey if you include Life Of The Party you should also Never Abandon Your Family, both of those tracks are songs that in my opinion are CRUCIAL and INTEGRAL to the full scope and context of this album. NAYF is the most explicit connection from Kanye’s familial values to his own upbringing. It’s beautiful, heart wrenching.
i was looking to see if someone else felt the same way. i second this very much, never abandon your family was something incredible to witness during the live listening parties. i dont even know if i could qualify that as a song its just an experience in my opinion

I actually think this is Kanyes most emotional and open work in a long time. Sure there isnt a strong continuous theme connected to his mother but its pretty clear that most of the album is about family, relationships, loss, and faith. More so in the second half though. Most of the features do end up talking about faith or their own families as well. I think he should’ve cut out a lot of the fat in the middle though. Back when the album first came out I mostly listened to a 15 song version of the album that I reordered a little and I genuinely think theres a 8.5-9 album hiding in there. Unfortunately its too bloated so its more like a 7 as is.
I think this was the version I listened to the most:
Act 1:
1. Jail
2. Heaven and Hell
3. Off the Grid
4. Hurricane
5. Moon
Act 2: Loss/Family
6. Believe What I say
7. Life of the Party
8. Jonah
9. Never Abandon Your Family
10. 24
Act 3: Rebirth/Finding faith again
11. Keep My Spirit Alive
12. Jesus Lord
13. Lord I need you
14. Pure Souls
15. Come to Life
Kanye albums usually have him putting on some kinda mask but this one just felt raw
He shouldn’t have cut Pusha T from the song Donda too, and that should’ve been the first song instead of Donda Chant imo
1.Come to Life
2.Hurricane
3.Jesus Lord
4.OFF The Grid
5.Life of the Party
6.Jail
7.24
8.Moon
9.Praise God
10.Heaven & Hell
11.Pure Souls
12.Belive What l Say
13.Lord l need you

No Child Left Behind and Jesus Lord unfortunately didn’t use an actual church organ. Both however, were produced by Mike Levy aka Gesaffelstein, who worked with Kanye previously in Yeezus for tracks Black Skinhead and Send it Up
Fun fact: After Kanye dropped Yeezus, Gesaffelstein dropped his debut album, Aleph (alpha in Hebrew), with a similar album cover of an Encased CD.

i know this will sound crazy, but i feel like the music was secondary to the listening parties and the visuals, when I listen to the album I have those visuals in my head, it felt more like performance art and they released the album after. When you look at the listening parties or experiences, I feel like those tell a story like no child left behind and when he ascends to the heaven, that made me almost cry as Kanye was the child left behind and he tries his hardest to connect to her by being ascended to the top of the stadium.

It has such a beautiful cover art, hope they check out the album because I always come back to the album it’s my fav album from them instrumentally and thematically
Love these reactions, can't wait for a The Melodic Blue reaction
Ayyye tranquillity base in the background! Can’t wait for there next album
"Royce...The 5 Foot 9" is my favourite way to say his name now
Well I loved this journey through Kanye’s discography. It was amazing how quickly your dad enjoyed listening to ye in just a couple of months, which just goes to show how great Kanye really is as an artist.
Been amazing content watching someone enjoy the songs for the first time. It was like a contact high. Thank you.
We GOT TO get some outkast now. Also great video once again, it's been a beautiful journey going through this discography with you guys.
After the loss of my old man. Donda definitely helped me heal. Donda is like my 3rd favorite album because it healed me spiritually.
Come to life is a prime example of vulnerability brining out Kanyes best work. Beautiful track
Was waiting for this!
When you were talking about tell the vision there was a much better version slated for donda in late 2020, but he gave it to pop smoke’s team for his album. It’s on CZcams and it had potential to be Kanye’s most hype song and certainly one of the better tracks on donda.
With the two chainz verse omg it’s so damn good

This is the one. Man the second half of that song just amazes me
@@Lenvp 🐐
somehow i never got to this thought but for kanye to feature so many rappers he must listen to all kinds of rap music during his free time
Come to Life is so beautiful
Thank goodness I was waiting for the come to life reaction! Don’t let me down Kevin
You guys are the best. Never stop doing this
The DMX sample on LOTP is insanely underrated. Watch the slingshot ride clip… powerful
I love this album and I think Off The Grid, Hurricane, Jail, Moon, Life of the party, praise god, come to life, believe what I say, up from the ashes, lord I need you, 24, never abandon your family, keep my spirit alive, heaven and hell, pure souls, new again and Jesus lord are all really good songs. Specifically Come to Life, 24, Jesus Lord, Off the grid, Hurricane, praise god and The Life of the Party left a massive impact on me post release.
dawg that’s like every song 😭
@@kalinsheth6995 😭💀
@@kalinsheth6995 lmao yeah it’s a good album. Didn’t really like Donda (the song), remote control, any of the part twos, Junya, God Breathed, ok ok, Jonah or tell the vision.

@@saqib7965 I never agree with random lists on the internet but you’re 100% right on this. Only ones I’d switch around is moving up 24 but besides that, spot on.
Come to life makes me feel like I'm transcending into a higher plane of existence as the song continues on which I think is what Kanye aimed for, Kanyes most powerful song ever IMO
No Child Left Behind is like the credits to me, the album ends at Come To Life, and NCLB is the decompression at the end of it all
This album is specifically what I needed to close that duel of the absence of a loved one, it is that moment in which music makes sense and transforms into love instead of absence
Come to Life on this side of the album is incredible. Amazing, touching track
The run between pure souls and no child left behind is so beautiful
Last 3 tracks are peak
So glad you included Life of the Party
I think that even though Donda is only mentioned specifically on certain songs a majority of the songs still connect to the themes of family and faith that bring the album together. The album rollout with the listening parties and everything made me love this album more as well
the Donda track always brought me to tears......she described his so so well and Kanye really ain't scared of nothing ,his self confidence is mind blogging....im going to watch the documentary again now 😥😥😥😭....i miss my mom everytime #RIPMOMMA #RIPDONDA 🕊🕊🕊
i’m surprised kevin didn’t get like emotional at all in Come To Life, i love that song so much and it literally brings me to tears sometimes
Put a right smile on my face seeing the Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino record in the background :)
I love that your Dad felt a connection to Andre 3000, an Outkast series of Reacts is definitely a great idea!
Lord I need you and Come to life imo are the best ones from Donda. They resonate so deeply with me. And Kanye's voice in Lord I need you just hits different man.
I really loved this one!
been subscribed for a few months just cause i heard so many good things online and im finally getting around to watching all your videos and gotta say love your channel
Good Friday’s PLEASEEEE and don’t forget singles like Only One!
i feel like this album has very clear themes and remains consistent in its chaos
Very much agree it’s actually very consistent

These videoes are therapy for me
