  • Roland #JD800 on #JUPITERxm - Quick performance, all sounds live on the Xm and from the new JD-800 Model Expansion installed on it (standard Xm drum track).
    I had my doubts, but the JD-800 Model Expansion is very worthy of the JUPITER-X/Xm. It may not have analog roots, but it does have character and presence. I didn't expect it to map well to the JUPITER-X (let alone the Xm) controls, but Roland did an outstanding job here. After a few hours, it's quite smooth, especially with our friends "Shift" and "Function."
    Most important, I think it really brings an additional class of Tones to the X/Xm that were not there. There's a crisp-almost-crunchy feel to many of the waveforms that are undoubtedly digital but still really useful. And the new multi MFX effects? chef's kiss There are some gems in there that will take some time to explore, and it will be great to use them with other Models as well.
    Five stars, highly recommended.

    I thought it was cool to have a JD-800 "model" BUT really how does it differ from the already deep Zencore and waveforms already loaded in the Jupiters. I guess Roland can economize on that Zencore engine and replicate the signal flow/parameters of past digital gear without the user having to do so. I wonder when the D-50 "model" will be coming.

      A friend and I have been digging deeper into the differences between the JD-800 and what could be done with ZEN-Core alone. The JD-800 does include some new additional waveforms, but not that much different than ones already in ZEN-Core previous to the update. The answer seems to be "not much". There are some great new MFX options, but most of those come with 1.40. Chances are most any sound in the JD-800 expansion could have been made (or close enough) in the basic ZEN-Core engine. But the new menu structures of the JD-800 model probably make it easier, and it does have an interesting second Tone MFX structure available to it which I'm going to explore.

    Robert, thank you for your awesome Jupiter videos! I don't know if you still have the Xm, but I was wondering if you recall did your unit shipped with the silver PRELOADED MODELS sticker on the front panel? If so, did you remove it yourself and any tips for doing that? Appreciate your time! :)

      It did, and I did remove it eventually. I just peeled it up, used a small piece of duct tape to tap up the little remaining adhesive. No damage to the surface below. It’s strong but not that strong.

    Great video, thank you - been looking at the Xm. Two questions please - do you get a complete JD800 model with all original parameters accessible; and if you load the model in, do you loose another one?

    • @RobertSaintJohn
      @RobertSaintJohn  Před 3 lety +3

      As far as I can see from the original JD-800 manual, all the same parameters that were in the original are available in this model expansion. This (and future?) model expansions are loaded into the dedicated memory space that is also used for up to two Wave Expansions, so you do not have to replace any of the native models (like the J8, 106, 8P, etc). Model Expansions like seem to use the native ZEN-Core engine waveforms and VA, so are relatively small. I estimate that even with two Wave Expansions loaded, there is still enough room for 6-12 more future Model Expansions, so you won’t have to give up anything or shuffle them around (like on the System-8). Once installed, the JD-800 shows up just like any of the other Models. Also, it comes with its own Preset Tones that do not eat into the 256 User Tone space. So it’s all very seamless and efficient

    can you load it on top of all the other preloaded model expansions on the jupiter X? or do you have to ditch one of the others?

      You can add it without deleting anything. JUPITERs have a segment of storage reserved for these newer model expansions

    I have the PRO level membership of Roland Cloud and have installed the JD-800 model file on to my Windows 10 PC via the Roland Cloud software, which installs the EXM005_JD800.exz file into the Zenology software, so I had to hunt around for its location for a bit so I could copy it onto the USB drive for importing to the Xm. On trying to install this file onto my Xm via the correct procedure however, I get the message "Incorrect File" ??? My question is, is this file somehow qualitatively DIFFERENT from the file that you download from the Roland Cloud if you purchase a Lifetime Key (as opposed to just having a subscription level PRO licence)??? I would have thought that it should work if you have subscribed, just as well as if you had bought it outright?

    • @RobertSaintJohn
      @RobertSaintJohn  Před 3 lety

      Yes, it is not the same file as one keyed for a Lifetime Key. There is a process as outlined in the doc that outlines the transfer and installation of that user-specific key to your hardware when you go to install a properly licensed model (or wave) expansion directly to your system.

    • @sonarfreq
      @sonarfreq Před 3 lety

      @@RobertSaintJohn Yes, thanks, I see now from the Roland web site that wave and model expansions, and also sound packs, must be purchased with a lifetime key in order to be used at all with the hardware, which is more than a little frustrating.

    • @RobertSaintJohn
      @RobertSaintJohn  Před 3 lety +1

      @@sonarfreq Here’s a tip about Sound Packs, though: even though it requires the LK to transfer the single Sound Pack to the X/Xm, you can use the free version in Zenology to write out each Tone to your own user bank in the Tone manager (essentially recreate the Pack one-by-one). Then write that to hardware, put your user bank onto USB stick, and import the tones onto the hardware that way. A little more time-consuming, but it also allows you to be selective up front as to which Tones you want to add to the limited (256) User Tones of the X/Xm.

    • @sonarfreq
      @sonarfreq Před 3 lety

      @@RobertSaintJohn Yeah just tried it with a JUPITER-8 preset exported from Zenology Pro, and the Xm WILL allow you to "mark" it for import, and then subsequently import it successfully! So I was right, unless there is a matching model already installed on your hardware (NOT just the Z-CORE model it seems), you cannot import tone presets for that model that have been exported from Zenology. So I guess I am going to have to purchase that Lifetime Key for the JD-800 model after all if I want to use tone presets from it in my Xm in the same manner that I use them in Zenology Pro currently, and indeed similarly purchase any further models that Roland release in the future! Roland really should make this clearer on their web site I feel, as I really had to hunt around for that info in order to find it!

    • @RobertSaintJohn
      @RobertSaintJohn  Před 3 lety

      @@sonarfreq what you’re describing is a bit different than what I was saying. I didn’t mean to imply that you could export a JD-800 tone from Zenology to the X/Xm without the JD being installed on the hardware. JD-800 includes and uses waveforms and a structure that differ from the standard ZC and model expansion waveforms of the X/Xm. The method I described was specifically about Model Expansion Sound Packs for those models installed on the hardware, whether it be the factory models, a new one like the JD, or anything that comes out in the future. The tones will always be looking for waveforms and algorithms and model IDs on the system itself, whether they are standard factory or expansion (model or wave). Sorry for the misunderstanding
