    This is a video of my first ride out on my Honda CRF300 Rally. It was 6th March 2021, and 5C when I started and close to freezing by the time I finished. My visor misted up, I couldn't feel my fingers or toes by the end but it was great to get out on the bike.
    To more useful information, I was able to do back country lanes, a 70mph dual carriageway, some town riding and a rocky byway to put the bike through it's paces. It is still being run in, so everything is at a slow-ish pace.
    The locations are Edale, Whaley Bridge, Goyt Valley, Buxton and Millers Dale, all in or around the Peak District National Park in the UK.

    07:47 Rocky Trail

    I've tried to answer all the questions that I could from my 'First Look' video. I'm sure there will be more on this, so by all means ask.

    Nice review. The biggest thing that Japanese manufacturers need to work on with their dual sport motorcycles while keeping it at a doable price point is improve the stock suspension. We should not have to run out and spend $1000 on aftermarket suspension on a brand new motorcycle. I'm not as worried about full adjustability as I am having proper dampening from the factory so they don't start hopping all over on little stutter bumps and the rear wheel stays stuck to the ground and the front does the same. Also they should offer optional spring rate options for different size riders when you purchase it from the factory. Not one size fits all. If only one make it at least set up for a 200lb-225lb rider with gear at the minimum. As far as the engine goes a 350cc single with a well spaced 6 speed gearbox is the sweet spot for an in between engine on a smaller displacement dual sport underneath the 450-500cc class. Even my old 90's Suzuki DR350se had 30hp and most importantly 21.4ft. lbs of torque with a well spaced 6 speed and easily traveled at 70mph with power in reserve for passing with a top speed of 85+ mph. The bikes also need to weight in under 300lbs but in all fairness have 300lbs as the maximum wet weight along with a full size 18 inch rear wheel. Last but not least start putting real seats that are useable from the factory back on motorcycles. The seats from the 80's even were much better in that regard, not a 2x4. If they can do all that and keep the bike at a 6KUS and under price point they would sell them as fast as they could make them. We shouldn't have to spend lots of money fixing mistakes of a stock motorcycle. Sure add ons of our liking are fine but not main expensive repairs. thanks for the upload.

    • @PeakMotorcycles
      @PeakMotorcycles  Před 3 lety +2

      Yup, I agree with all of that! I suppose they are trying to supply a very broad market, and the result is that not everything is covered as we would like. In the UK, I've seen plenty of CRF250L's which have never seen any off-road which are used as cheap, low maintenance commuter transport. There's also plenty which still have the stock suspension and seat, so perhaps for some uses, even though it's not great, it's enough for those users. Where the offering starts to fall apart is the use at the extremes, so though better damping would be amazing, if it even added $500, would that put off some of the road users who don't miss it when it's not there? I guess it would also come down to how much would these things cost? e.g. if it added $1000 to the list price of a new bike to have improved suspension, (and it was an option), would you choose to have it stock, or as you suggest, do it your self and get something that is just right for you at the same price point?
      I do think that after a years of neglect, the dual sport segment of the market is getting more attention, and perhaps Honda will take the KTM approach of doing an 'R' version (or whatever Honda call it, a plus perhaps, that's what they did with my CB1000R) so that those that want to pay £5k for the stock CRF250L with basic suspension and seat can do so, and those who are looking for a bit more can buy a CRF250L+ that comes with the improved components without having to do them yourself and then discard all the original parts which you don't need. Until then, I guess I'll make do and see how I can get the most out of the bike. Ride safe!

    I love it when something is just enough. I wouldn't go shooting gophers with a sniper rifle when a .22 works. Most people that ride motorcycles seem to prefer overkill though. I wish my DR650 was lighter and I wish my CB300R was capable of touring the long rough logging roads where I live on the West side of Canada. Enter CRF300L Rally. For now +1 motorcycles is my solution to fixing the weak area of one particular bike. I've had my CB300R, with same(ish) 286cc engine, up to 143km/hr, 88mph, enough to allow time travel if i had a flux capacitor so enough for any highway. I love the agility and low cost fun factor. My little bike did gain power after initial break which took an unusually long nearly 750 miles. in those first miles mine burnt a little oil and even after the first oil change service it burnt some and I topped it up. Strange for a Honda I thought but it burns none now and seals are tight and power increased a little and fuel economy increased higher also. 32km/l or 90mpg UK is what i get and I suspect similar numbers with similar weight bikes and the same engine. Even if it's mapped a little differently. That should give the Rally the same range with its 12.8L tank that my DR with 20L of up high sloshing fuel gets. My buddies are surprised how well I keep up with them on their bigger bikes on my 300 and I'm happy to have a little bike which is so cheap to run. Might be time soon to simplify my life and sell those 2 for a CRF. Would save money on insurance every year.

      @PeakMotorcycles  Před 3 lety +1

      Awesome mate! Sounds like it’s doing exactly what you need. I guess the success of the bike, even when many people are still waiting for theirs is down to addressing key things with the 250, while remaining a dual sport, not an enduro, MX, heavyweight adventure bike, and everything else the bike isn’t trying to be. Enjoy the ride!

      I have been waffling over the same thing. I just had to sell my DR650 so we can get the house we want in Calgary. Likely going to buy a new bike instead of waiting to save up again, as you only live once. I keep waffling back and forth as I like the power of the 650 but I like the idea of a small dual sport that is capable off road on the trails but also can handle the long stretches of Alberta hwy travel. The CRF300l Rally seems to tick most of my boxes.

    Good review - I agreed with pretty much all you said. Even on bumpy farm tracks, I'm not feeling the suspension so soft, but not done anything very bumpy, so reckon you could have a point. After 300 miles, the engine appears to free up a lot. 75mph (True SatNav) on the motorway is doable for long distances. I have now completed 4 x 50+ mile motorway jaunts. Summary: Great bike for the money and decent service intervals make this a workhorse. Downsides: 1st short for the street. The buzz at 4,500rpm, which gets better, but still there for me after 400 miles. It's like the buzz of death at 50mph on my old XJ900 Diversion.

    Excellent, honest and valuable review - I have a CRF250M in Thailand, and now thinking of getting the 300 Rally. The 250M had slightly firmer suspension and bigger brakes, but it's not available any more, which is a shame as a CRF300M would be nice. Locally made Hondas are a great price here, and there's also some good, low price accessories available in Thailand - but unfortunately I've heard that the Thai spec bikes have lowered suspension, so may need to see how I can get mine back to up to a full manly height.
    There's some simple modifications that the locals do to the front suspension, so hopefully not too costly to beef up the front end?

      Hi, Tricky one, I haven't ridden the KLX, and neither the outgoing one nor the new one are available in the UK so I don't really have anything to compare. From other peoples comments, it seems that you can actually test ride and buy the KLX300, whereas the Honda is waiting lists and slipping delivery dates. No idea why there's the difference, unless Kawasaki have their supply chain sorted and Honda do not. From what I've read on the internet (so please take it with a pinch of salt) is that the Kawasaki is a more off road focussed dual sport and the Honda is more road, but that's just the internet, so who knows. Perhaps the KLX is 55/45 and the CRF 45/55... My apologies that I cannot help any more than that.

I'd like to know more about that, first I've heard of such a thing. Maybe it's common practice nowadays, to provide a brand new engine some protection during the running-in period. The improvement could also be as everything beds in and frees up, or a combination of the two. I'll keep that in mind when ours arrive. Thanks for the video.

I have 90 miles to go, which I’ll try to get done at the weekend and will let you know how it goes. I’m sure the engine freeing up helps too, but I would have thought that would be more gradual rather than a step at 150 miles. I agree that you would not wish to cover many motorway miles on a 150 (and less so on a 125) but that’s not really what these bikes are for. The best bike is the one you’re riding and enjoying regardless of where you are and to generalise that the size of engine is unsuitable for a continent, when the evidence in terms of sales and use is quite the opposite. I adjusted the rear preload to suit my weight, as it was a little soft for me, to about one turn away from full tension. I adjusted it originally as firm as it could go but found rear too firm and made front suspension a little harsh. So I think the extras are the fuel tank (the non-rally now has a smaller one than before), fuel tank screen and LED headlamp. My Rally has LED indicators too, not sure if that’s the same on the non-rally. I think both now have the slipper clutch and slightly lower gearing for 1-4 and a slightly longer 6th, but I think that’s it. I’ve seen a few posts from people looking for a larger tank for the standard. I guess LED headlamps are pricey (though the Thai L has one...), so really not much in it. I guess that if you wanted a bigger tank, screen and LED’s you might as well get a rally, as there’s probably not a lot of change out of £1k for that (assuming an expensive headlamp!). I’m a bit over 100kg, and my 300 will pull up a 15% hill in 5th from 30mph and cruise at 70mph in 6th without too much buzzing. Stay safe too!

      About the same as the 250. Probably ok if suspension is not a priority, but if you’re heavier, carrying a pillion or luggage or navigating rocky terrain, it’s not great. I also ride a R1250GS, so compared to that it’s a bicycle! I’ve also ridden a Yamaha 250 MX bike which weighed 50kg less than the CRF300L, so if that’s what you are used to, then it will be heavy. Most of the weight is carried low down, so once moving it feels light, and it turns in easily. I haven’t dropped it yet, so can’t comment on picking it up from flat, but again, lighter than a GS, heavier than an enduro/Mx bike. I hope this helps.

      That would be great! Unfortunately we aren’t getting the KLX300 here in the UK (I did call a local dealer as soon as it was announced to see if we’d be getting it.)

      Don't get me wrong, I like your bike, and probably for not to much money if it was mine I would work on the suspension a bit, get a skid plate and possibly an exhaust add on. I bet the KLX will need some help too. The pricing is pretty good. I appreciate your Vlog.

      @@larrylund1138 skid plate was ordered from new (dealer is still waiting on stock) and yup, the rest of the list is spot on. Am still waiting for most of the accessories to become available. I guess most will be similar to the 250 parts but the frame changed with the welded subframe so am waiting to see what comes out.

      Told here in Australia klx 300 not road legal. Weird considering klx150 is legal

    Nice to have videos without some awful soundtrack over the top and instead being able to hear the engine and wind.

      🤣 thanks. I try to make videos without things that I dislike. So no music, no clickbait, if it’s a 3 minute video, it’s a 3 minute video, not 7 minutes of fluff and 3 mins of content. And though I did ask for likes and subscribes in the early ones, I find that annoys me on others so I stopped. If the content is good enough, folks will watch it. If it isn’t, they won’t. (Mind you, in some cases, maybe music is better than me waffling on… I try to cut it when I think I’m talking too much and not saying a lot, but some gets through for which I can only apologise. Thanks for watching.

    Should've stopped on the dirt road and increased preload, we'd have gotten the answer.

    Pretty nice machine but Honda would do better to toss all that plastic body crap and offer serious off-road suspension components for a higher price tag

    • @PeakMotorcycles

      I guess it’s made for a dual sport market to a price, and you can avoid the ‘plastic body crap’ on the non-rally version. I’ve had a bit of a browse and I think you can do the Ohlins fork springs and rear suspension with remote adjuster for about £700 (US$950), with other cheaper options too, so that might get you closer to what you’re looking for. Even with that, it’s still cheaper than any of the proper Enduro’s, though I’m not sure that’s the market, especially here in the UK. There are relatively few dual sports available (mostly due to emissions restrictions) and I guess most people will get a CRF300L as a cheap means of transport, which has some off road ability. I’ll save up some pennies and do the suspension and see how it goes. Ride safe!

    You live in an awesome place for a biker!!! (Where's the shopping btw?)

      Excellent! Great to hear they are finally getting through. It’s not a bad place to live. As for shopping… there’s a farm shop 4 miles away which is open 4.5 days/week and a small Spar supermarket with a post office counter. Nearest petrol is 6 miles away. That said, plenty of pubs and cafes and we’re only 15 miles from Sheffield and 20 from Manchester, so it’s not as remote as the far side of Wales or the Lakes.
