- Dating to season 2 in 1958, this episode of "The Silent Service" is entitled "The Grayling Story." It was directed by Sobey Martin and written by Jay Rosenburg, and features Rear Admiral Thomas M. Dykers as the host. The plot of this episode surrounds the USS Grayling's fourth patrol, in which the sub encountered a Japanese Q-ship -- a decoy vessel used to draw in submarines. The sub ends up under heavy attack and it looks like curtains for the boat and its crew. The "Grayling" would escape but then be lost with all hands in Sept 1943 during its eighth patrol near the Philippines. The Grayling would sink 5 ships totalling 20,000 plus tons before her loss. The cast includes Barry Atwater, Tommy Cook, Arvid Nelson and Dan Barton.
USS Grayling (SS-209) was a Tambor-class submarine.
Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. In 1967,--I did a building job,in Freemantle, Western Australia,--there was an old "pool-hall,"-in the main-street,--I went into,-on the wall,faded,--was all these U.S.submariners,-signatures on the walls,--plus old photo's of their submarins,--even their favorite "cues"-were stuck high up,under the lights,--this was a really old joint !--i asked the old bloke, who owned the place,,he said "i remember those boys well!!--they always drove "a pink jeep"--and really hit "the grog !"---i couldn't stop looking at all those "old signatures !"--my job was only a week there,--and I flew back to Sydney,--Unfortunately,--it was all torn down-for "high-rise"---I'm 77 now-"an old geezer"--but I remember all those faded signatures to this day !--Aussie john--
What a nice story. Thank you from another old geezer ..
You are welcome !--in Sydney,-every year,-we have '"CORAL_SEA" week-where we remember the Aussie and U.S. sailors, that died in that battle--we always remember them !@@davidthelander1299
What A Nice Film! I Like The Alarm Sound At The Beginning Of The Film, Thanks For Presenting This Wonderful Film!
A sad story about the last and final patrol of Greyling. She had rescued Msgt Roy Wilson from an island (Panay). He had evaded capture from the Japanese for over a year, our loss of the Philippines. Sadly, he was lost with all hands when Greyling was sunk.
I have much respect for the people who can serve on submarines. I spent 22 years in the USMC and would rather crawl through mud with bullets whizzing overhead than be inside a sub. I'm majorly claustrophobic.
Thanks for your service Devil Dog. Retired Navy Sailor here...
@@RetiredSailor60 And thank you sir for your dedication and service.
An ordinary citizen here thank you for your service. Much love and kisses🥰
Oh damn! There’s Mr. Drysdale, the Beverly Hills banker!
Yeah, but the burning question remains, who won the checkers match?
Do you have any films you can post from the Northern Rhodesia information department
OMG, those guys are babies! HATE war. Thank you for defending one of the greatest nation, the United States. And allies. Thank God for the PTSD diagnosis. Back then they just dealt with the horrors of war with alcohol like my cousin. When he returned he was never the same.
Turned to alcohol, lost his wife and child. His father was an alcoholic so he was predisposed. He fought in Vietnam. His brother found him deceased. Did I say I HATE war?
IMPORTANT SUB TIP, Don't dive with the captain outside! (unless you don't like him)
OMG, wow, I have never seen a sub come out of the water like a whale.
porposing
This is a GREAT video, but I would NOT want to serve on a sub! Nope! 🧐
You have to wonder what happened to them
It was found a couple of years ago, it was accidentally struck by an enemy Ship?
Probably a daft question..... but how do the deck guns survive the saline environment without rusting?
Well waterproof greased. Regular maintenance at sea, on the surface.
Naval magic
As someone pointed out, who won the checkers game??
‚Oh, there is an enemy bomber!‘
joking around for another 10 s before ordering to dive… does not really match similar scenes from ‚Das Boot‘
ALAAAAAAAAARM
What dialect is the Rear Admiral speaking? Is this some genuine non-rhotic New England dialect or is this a mid-atlantic accent?
You almost never hear an American speak this crisply nowadays.
Thank God I Don’t Sound Like That.
Season 2 Episode 7 "The Ugly Duckling" is a missing episode, I think.
*Aggressive, obnoxious gum chewing intensifies.
Also, Raymond Bailey (Millburn Drysdale from Beverly Hillbillies) playing Admiral Christie, the guy that cancel the Captain's leave and had to many staff meetings.
Deep diving coffins....
It's somewhat misleading.
The real Lee seemed to have aged a lot, interviewed here in 1958. Approaching senility almost, with no sense of humour. Or perhaps just nervous. Obviously reciting a prepared script.
1:29 It's a wonder the captain can still talk like he chews gum!
