"This game feels like it could have been made by a two-man indie team." Ah yes, the game with hundreds of different items and skill combinations, complex 2.5D environments, easily over 100 hours of content, and 8 full (and REALLY, REALLY GOOD, I might add) story arcs spanning over multiple chapters each. The game with full voice acting for almost every cutscene in said mainline stories as well as several side-quests, ninety-six different class combinations each with their own sprite and each class having voice lines for each character using each individual skill, one of the most inventive turn-based combat systems I've ever personally seen with the break and boost mechanics, and a soundtrack that easily rivals Minecraft and Undertale in terms of memorability. Totally doable by just two guys. You very clearly have no clue what you're talking about.
You forgot giving every character voice lines they use only while in battle with every other character. Totally could have done that with two people. AND the incredible reactive lighting effects that make the storybook graphics pop in a way older generations of sprites couldn't.
As much as I love the first Octopath Traveler, OT2 is an upgrade in every way. It is objectively a better game. So how someone can conclude the game is -WORSE- is beyond me.
I've never disagreed with someone more in my life. This game is a freaking masterpiece. The soundtrack, the story, the characters, the graphics. I've been lost in every chapter I've done so far. (Up to chapter 3 for each character) and I'm sad that it's ending is getting closer and closer.
RIGHT! I bought the collector's edition. I've never seen a game like this before, although it's down the corridor of Final Fantasy, Breath Of Fire, Chrono Cross, Shining Force, and other modern/classical RPG stories. The art style is groundbreaking and captivating. If Pokemon decided to take a step back into sprite animation then THIS is what they need to build reference from. This is like a blast to the 90s SNES with the power of modern hardware. And the music, just perfect. Also did the last 3 minutes not have audio, or did he just become brain dead and quit talking?
masterpiece? the writing is a joke. Its like they wrote 8 crap stories and mashed them together with no thought to cohesion. Hell npcs talk to characters during their chapters as if they are alone, other members of your team only exist during combat. Mediocre stories, bad design and execution of those stories and then mashing them all together just for the sake of having the 8 seperate paths is lazy af. Octopath is so overrated, and that is because the genre is so thirsty for anything of quality. It is simply the shiniest turd in the pile.
A lot of these criticisms are pretty inaccurate, or just ignorant as to the game itself. Octopath more than most other JRPGs is not just spamming the attack button. The Break and Boost system adds a ton to the combat that doesn't let you so easily and mindlessly push through it. In addition, the fact that different armors and such don't alter the character sprite is because the sprite changes are reserved for the secondary jobs the character takes. As for the story, yeah, if you go skipping all the dialogue, you don't end up being attached to the characters. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Overall, this review makes me seriously doubt you even played the first game, much less being a "Big fan" as you said you were.
As someone who had never played a JRPG like this before who did in fact attempt to "mindlessly push through it", you are correct. I ended up having to look up a guide on how to battle- this is not a game you can just barrel through lol
Couldn't disagree more. It's a beautiful ride and journey with lot of emotion, humour, and amazing soundtrack that will hug you in this universe for hours. It has its flaws but overall it's a massive improvement on OT1 and shows the love the devs have for this franchise.
I have played over 40 hours of Octopath Travler 2 and I can tell you that this game is an art and a masterpiece, full of soul and love of life. And I didn't even get close to chapter 2. Because in this game there is always something. This game is art style, you have read classic literature then you must like it. The lore of the game is in no way inferior to the works of Tolkien or Harry Potter
Agreed. This guy “I found myself spamming the skip button” tells me everything I need to know. Slow down the gameplay, take in the events happening, how they’d influence your characters, their choices, etc. Practice that empathy
@@adamprosser9904 I've already played 80 hours and haven't even finished 3-4 chapters yet =) stretching the fun, games like this come out every 5 years
I think art is subjective, I'm in my 30s, and I absolutely love this game and how it looks. I never "grew out" of fun games. They didn't innovate much this time, but it's still throughly entertaining to me personally.
see, this actually worries me a bit because I loved a lot of the Squaresoft classics back in the day, but generally don't make it far when I try to revisit them now. Without innovating on the genre, I'm not sure how engaging design conventions from 25 years ago are going to be for me today. As much as this critic is getting dragged, it's a valid concern.
@@Shade7x it’s a valid, subjective concern. A rather radical one. If you need innovation in order to not be venomously hateful then something inside you needs work.
@@shaifs5072 Is it that radical? Mario 1 used to be really popular too, but the genre has evolved. No one would pay new release price for it if it came out today. tbh though, I don't know this channel. Reviewer could totally be farming hate clicks. I was just looking for a review from someone without nostalgia glasses on.
This game is a masterpiece. The battle mechanics is so refreshing. It pays tribute to JRPGs while improving on classic tropes, eg, the different ways to interact with NPCs beyond simply chatting with them, the nonlinear story telling, the way characters talk to each other during combat, etc
Literally every problem you listed was a problem with the original Octopath Traveler so I'm confused how you could have enjoyed the original but not this one?
Yeah, this is the reason I don’t buy this as anything but a troll video for clicks. Literally every criticism he makes of 2 would also have applied to 1 lol

Or the quality of the HDTV itself overall. He bitches about the non-issues. This is what he's talking about in the video. Everything that flies out of his mouth his about a non-issue complaint that makes absolutely no sense. Skipping over the story cutscenes and then bitching about how the story disappointed him. Thanks for trying to farm views. if you liked the first game simply put, you’ll love the next game. It has even more beautiful graphics, stories, and even deeper character trees and rebalances. It’s obvious you never liked either if you wanna try to harm the game like this by telling people to not get it. Stories like Partitios had me literally watching a f*cking movie and I was so invested. I still loved the first game even with some more… straightforward stories and now I can’t even say that This games art style is such an homage to those old Final fantasy games and gives it a new modern beautiful feel to them. They went so far out of their way to make every scene look like a wallpaper in this game.
The first game sucked. Couldn’t be bothered to finish it. This one however is much better in every way. Let’s not mindlessly put it on a pedestal just because.
What did you like about the original? I am curious because for instance, you dont like the graphics in the second but they are superior to the first. Seems like a troll
It warms my heart to see everyones first instinct is to give very good impressions and general reviews in the comments. Love this community, for the most part.
You must view life through a keyhole if you can't see that this video is satire. But its fine, you're not the only one, it just seems like its the view life as literally as possible part of the jrpg fanbase. Like someone says they're gonna be out of the bathroom in a minute and you're literally there timing every second, like you seem like that type of person.
After putting in over 100hrs I can officially say that Octopath Traveler 2 is my favorite right of all time. I love the oldies but this game brought the feel of old time rpgs into the modern game frame it it is perfect... and the narrative, omg I loved the stories of each character and how they all blended together so well. This game is a masterpiece and I wish I had never played it so I could experience all over again. The creator of this video needs therapy.
I love this game. After finishing all of the main chapters (still working on the extra little bit at the end), I looked up osvald’s voice actor, since I *loved* his story, and it turns out that he voices some of the characters from other games that I like. The guy who made this video clearly didn’t play the same game. Also when you use Alaphan’s wisdom and The One True Magic, the line he uses is just *so* good. I love this game.
So let me see if I understand. You were playing a Turn based, story Driven JPRG. And are complaining... that it's a Turn Based, story driven JRPG? JRPGs aren't meant to be like Darkest Dungeon. Darkest Dungeon is a game designed around (literally) stressing you and your characters out with how difficult and challenging it is. That's it's main hook. Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 are a more traditional JRPG. It's driven by it's story, it's characters, it's world and how they all intertwine. The combat is designed to be more relaxing, not every game needs to be murder on your soul. Now of course you're more than free to dislike it, that's totally fair! But to say it's made by two people is frankly insulting. You HIGHLY underestimate how much work goes into a game like this. It may look simple but that's by design. I respect indie devs and the individual who made Stardew Valley has done a fantastic job, but no way in hell he could make something like this. Such a strange thing to me that people always seem to think making a video game is easy.
I am IMMESNILY enjoying this game, it's incredible and extremely well-made and well-balanced. The story is great, and the visuals leave me stunned every time I travel to a new zone or town. The artists and designers have truly created a playable and moving work of art, bravo!
This game is like the rebirth of Sqaure Enix doing things RIGHT again. I found the character stories so engaging. I loved the graphic style as i grew up playing original FF. I felt 10 years old again. It blew my mind. So happy with FF16 also looking like SE finally has gotten back on track again with new masterpieces. This guy is unbelievable.
Right?! There is no way we all played the same game as this guy, if this is the shit he’s saying. Also, I loved Osvald’s story. The voice acting, and everything was awesome.
Not even a minute in and you've earned the title of *Octo The Mayo.* I get that the stories didn't seem appealing at first, but all it took was Osvald's first two chapters to hook me. When was the last time you saw such a unique story?
Lol, none of the people in the comment section agree with the video. They have a point though. I understand that this game perhaps is not for you but I think saying that this game can easily be made with a team of 1 or 2 people is way off in my opinion. The dialogues, voice acting, narrative of the story are some of the best I’ve ever seen in an RPG games. Combat system is by far one of the best turn based mechanics. And the content of this game easily reaches 70 hours or so which you only experience for a couple of hours.
As an adult who's been playing video games since the early 90s, I wouldn't be caught dead saying "I've grown up too much past teenage years" for any particular genre or game. It would be immature of me to do so 🤣 I either like it or I don't. This guy is smoking some good shit 🤣 touch grass bro
Just a reminder for everyone in the comments that if one would just take a sec to look at this persons channel one would notice that there are basically only videos like don‘t buy … So this is either satire or they just wanna farm off of haters :)
I just don't possibly see how you could dislike this game if you were an "avid fan of the first game". It takes what the original game did and literally makes it all better. Not to mention, literally everything you complained about are elements that made the original octopath good.
I'm pretty sure it's a satirical "review". Look at the other videos on this channel: every single one of them unapologetically bashes some popular game.
After 100%’ing this game and playing 85 hours of it, I can safely say this guy knows nothing of what he’s talking about. The game is a masterpiece, improved over the first one in EVERY way posible. If Octopath 1 was a 7/10 for me this one is an easy 9.5/10.
I didn't like the first one but this is one of my new favorite games. The stories are great and almost all hook you in the first chapter. The gameplay is better than the first, and everything just 'feels' better. I can only imagine this video was made for the sole purpose to get engagement like this. Just please, don't anyone let this video be what makes you decide against this game.
Same here. Odd this guy liked the first one but complains about the writing in this. The writing in 1 was an absolute snooze fest until the last chapter for each character aside from Primrose.
So story wise, some characters may seem boring at the beginning, such as osvald, but I'm on the 4th chaper of all the characters and completed 2 characters stories and the story is extremely good.
I agree. Temenos's chapter 1 is like that, a lil slow and he first came off as a bit obnoxious. Started it thinking he'd be underwhelming. But as you get further, he turns into the sassiest legend, clapping his but cheeks as he walks, dissing the gods while he does so. Feels ironic but somehow it works. I'm not super far into the game, but his chapters have been getting more flavorful as I've been playing.
Bruh, I loved the first Octopath Traveler and this game is better in literally every way. Even the OST which I thought was gonna be the biggest bar to raise. Basically, the only things you can argue are just if you like certain characters better. For example, I like Tressa better than Partitio but I like Throné better than Therion. But the storytelling in 2 is way better regardless.
Wait a minute, this guy is a troll. Iirc he had a channel called sitting in a room or something where he vlogged and spewed his incel ideals and was very deranged. Clearly he's trying to pivot his provocateur stunt to a different audience.
What makes OT2 truly interesting is the details, what you read for each NPC's description, the quality of the music, and the art of the environment in certain areas. The game (including its predecessor) make you focus on perspective- not only in the characters' stories but also when finding items and completing side quests. The shortcoming of these types of 'critiques' shows the incompetence and lack of patience of the reviewer who 'judge a book by its cover'. Every character's first arc or 'chapter 1' (sometimes including a chapter 2 like for Osvald) is merely an introduction to the character's mechanics and teaching you to optimize their specific abilities before the game assumes you've recruited the other 7 characters and you unlock more jobs. Remember, you can start with ANY of the 8, so the difficulty will feel redundant to start and as you begin to complete each ring of arcs. Having fully 100% completed OT1 and working on Chapter 2s of OT2, I can see the care the development team and composer put in to the game's design and atmosphere. I would say this game is for those who have an eye and ear for detail, and for the completionists; thrill seeker gamers looking for their next fix may find the game more difficult to enjoy.
All the things you complain about are reasons I like it. I love the 16-bit pixel graphics that mimic the classic ff style, the tried and true turn based combat which doesn't overstep its formula in any way, and the stories which were well written and nicely cut down into easily digestible segments that could each be completed in one sitting. FF2 was the first super Nintendo game I ever played so octopath hits me right in the nostalgia. 😅
Imagine word puking about “growing up”. While crying about the fact that a throwback style Jrpg is… wait for it… a throwback style Jrpg… I too, hate when water does it’s primary function of getting things wet when I throw it on stuff.
I started playing the first one and man do I love it. Games like Sword Art Online just couldn't keep my interest level for long and I got off into the Octopath 1. Can't wait till I get the second game
I'm confused about how you said you were an avid fan of the original and then complain about things that are the same from that also I didn't like the 1st one entirely but I'm having a blast with this one so far. the characters actually being able to interact saved it for me.
i have only 12 hours in octopath 2 and im loving it compaired to the first game in which i almost did everything, i wanted to fight galdera but the xp gain is fucking horrible and the grinding is a pain in the ass which they also saved in octopath 2. i may go back to octopath 1 to finish the final challange the game has to offer but for now im enjoying the utter beauty that is the second game
@@Liliquan that's fine. but if is video isn't just bait then henlooks dumb because if he enjoyed the exact same things that were in the first game he shouldn't switch up now? like if I like a game for combat and then second game has the same combat I'd.....enjoy it and potentially be upset if they completely changed it between games.
I’m just wondering how you did like the first game but dislike the new one? Since literally most if not all of the things you dislike from this one are already on the first one? I have so many questions
lmao no it IS NOT. There are so many things to love in this game (the art, the music, the gameplay) but the story is not one of them. Personally I thought it was barely serviceable. Kinda like the story in a pokemon game in the sense that it's just good enough to give you an excuse to keep engaging with the awesome combat. I'm sorry but you're high on copium. Calling it a blueprint to storytelling is legit laugh out loud funny. The second you compare it to any other game that actually has good writing like red dead redemption 2, the witcher 3 or, the last of us you realize how false that statement is.
@@rose.i you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Just because the story isn't handfed to you doesn't mean it's just serviceable. For everything going on in the foreground, the background hid a lot more. For every historical event, a scrutiny/inquire/bribe/coerce creates a present tapestry of complexity. Did you just NOT do side quests? Or read the inquiry text of the many NPCs? Or check out the banter? Or see how the stories intersect in the final chapter? Or..... anything? Your comment reeks of arguing in bad faith. "Serviceable like Pokemon" is fucking BS.
You come across really condensating mate, a bit like crappy Elden Ring takes we had last year, but not as offensive. I agree 100% on blur effects being unnesesary though, this coupled with all other post processing effects and bloom only takes away from the presenation and makes me go cross eyed, there are a couple shots and fights where it works, like when we have a city at night in the background, the blurred effect makes those window lights really add to the atmosphere. In general traversal though, especially running around in the cities it's atrocious, obscuring npcs chests and so on. If you play this on pc edit your ini files to get rid of all those crappy effects, thank me later. Also I agree 60e is a steep price, funnily enough the first one is still 60e as well, but that is not a problem with the game but with entire industry. Still you more than get your value here. The only similarly themed game made by one dude is Chained Echoes, you claim you can find a dozen games like that for 5 bucks, give me like 5 examples lol Your takes on the story I can half agree on when it comes to the first game, but this one is immediately more engaging. Just saying, but maybe playing a 3 hour demo is not enough to pass a judgment on the game, clearly you don't understand the battle system, party dynamics, how equipment and path skills work. This game reminds me of my time playing Baldur's Gate with that free form world exploration which I really love, in that game characters didn't interact much or at all either. I'm also an old gamer, 35 yo and if you think only kids enjoy cool video games then up yours, I will keep my cake and eat it : P
Each characters are compelling. All eight of them. Their stories aren't just throwaways. And you think this is a kids game. What kid today are playing Octopath Traveler 2? They are playing some goofy Roblox, or some other silly games that are meant for kids. OT2 had me scrambling for the dictionary book at times because their were words in the game that I never heard of. For example: "I envy your perspicacity" and that is just one of many great dialogues littered through out the game. And the voice acting is superb. You can dream all you want about the past but this game blows away all of our childhood memories of those games we grew up on because it is BETTER. It has been improved upon. The soundtrack is god tier level. They creative team behind this poured all their heart and soul into it. This, along with Triangle Strategy is ushering in a whole new line of brilliantly done masterpieces. OT2 is a masterpiece from start to finish. So, to say this is a kid's game. That is a complete and utter insult. Believe me, kids today do not have the patience for this kind of thing. You may find a few that enjoy it but many are too busy enjoying contents like Roblox and its ilk. OT2 is very complex and a highly intelligent game. I wouldn't say this if I didn't see it with my own eyes. And I know not to waste time on some lame RPG when I see one. When I do find one that is a masterpiece like OT2. I praise it all to high heaven.
The 2.5 art style is a tremendous. The music is great. Partitio is phenomenal. Gameplay is very tactical where you have to figure out when to apply your BP for extra hits vs more damage vs extended buffs.
You talk about the game how you might get it when it is lower priced. Are you saying you didn’t play the full version? It starts out very simplistic, as most games do. I found the game got much deeper and more intricate the further I get into the game. Not sure how you can say “DO NOT BUY” when you haven’t experienced the full game. I have heard the final boss is one of the most challenging in the game ever. IGN took nearly 12 hours just to figure it out. For me, the further I get, the more I can’t put it down. And I’ve died multiple times as the game gets much more difficult and demands far more strategy and customization to your party and skills. Everyone is entitled to their opinion though. 😊👌🏻
Notice how there’s no reply comments from the creator? This is his thing. Just makes videos with clickbait titles saying he hates every single game that comes out. It’s basically satire at this point. Says whatever he can that will get clicks and comments (yes I know this comment unfortunately drives up the engagement but had to be said as a PSA for people who get bother by his statements like “you wouldn’t like this game if you’ve grown up” lol)
I mean I’m in my 20s. Ever since I was little, I have been in love with the turn based genre. And I still love it! I can agree that the game does appear to be overpriced for a game that looks like this, but I feel that what I got out of it does make up for the $60 I spent on it. The gameplay is engaging and strategic, and soundtrack is an absolute banger, the story is also miles better than the first and the characters are a lot more developed. Sure, some of them have a very slow pacing, but if you give the story a chance, you can see the build up to future events. Things will begin to align and then it will lead to some pretty epic moments.
as an artist, hearing you go on about the depth of field effect made me laugh, for me personally, i freakin LOVE it, without it, it wouldnt lead you into this imaginary world, it really pulls you in....I really think youve missed the poont on SO many points you make.
Man. That's like your personal opinion and shit... I think anyone who loves the first one will love this one. And by loving it I mean, with it's Galdera Epilogue and all.
Wrong😂

I think art is subjective, I'm in my 30s, and I absolutely love this game and how it looks. I never "grew out" of fun games. They didn't innovate much this time, but it's still throughly entertaining to me personally.
Why would anyone want to grow out "fun games"? That just sounds depressing. Video games were made to be enjoyed
see, this actually worries me a bit because I loved a lot of the Squaresoft classics back in the day, but generally don't make it far when I try to revisit them now.

@@Shade7x yes, it is radical. If you can’t play a game if it’s not innovative then that’s very abnormal. It’s extreme.
That's what I said like wtf? 😂

This games art style is such an homage to those old Final fantasy games and gives it a new modern beautiful feel to them. They went so far out of their way to make every scene look like a wallpaper in this game.

This game is a masterpiece and I wish I had never played it so I could experience all over again. The creator of this video needs therapy.
Your finishing comment was so off-topic it made my day, cheers!
One of the best turn based rpg I’ve played in a long time. Story is amazing, art style is beautiful, AND THE MUSIC IS ABSOLUTELY 🔥
Agreed, the music is absolutely awesome
I'm almost 40, I've played all kinds of RPG, and I got to say I'm blown away by OT2, this dude couldn't be more wrong
6:52 This is where the review takes a positive turn.😂
Mind you; this is the kind of sod who'd clown on kh2 for being childish
Yeah at least use Chained Echoes as an example, Stardew Valley is as different from this as... Darkest Dungeon
If you want good scenery, go outside 💀
I am IMMESNILY enjoying this game, it's incredible and extremely well-made and well-balanced. The story is great, and the visuals leave me stunned every time I travel to a new zone or town. The artists and designers have truly created a playable and moving work of art, bravo!
*Immensely
The music is also amazing. I have remixes of the main character themes saved in my phone and they go so hard.
Saying the graphics aren't good when ochette's story exists is criminal
Not even a minute in and you've earned the title of *Octo The Mayo.*
I get that the stories didn't seem appealing at first, but all it took was Osvald's first two chapters to hook me.
This is one of those bad takes that’s so bad it’s hard to tell if your trolling.

I say that is pretty standard in all rpgs the story in early game tends to only be a build up for the good stuff that happens later.
Was this an excersize in reverse psychology?

This video is exactly why CZcams got rid of the Dislike Number Count. I cannot wait to play OT2...

This game IS the blueprint for game developers of how you write immersive stories
lmao no it IS NOT.
Or..... anything?

The only similarly themed game made by one dude is Chained Echoes, you claim you can find a dozen games like that for 5 bucks, give me like 5 examples lol
Your takes on the story I can half agree on when it comes to the first game, but this one is immediately more engaging.
Nice essay of contradictions moron
