    Eight travelers. Eight adventures. Eight roles to play in a new world brought to life by Square Enix. Explore each traveler’s story and use their abilities in and out of battle. Will you expand your horizons as the Merchant or track down a traitor as the Warrior? Where will you go? Who will join you? You alone can choose your path in Octopath Traveler the best jrpg.
    Step into the shoes of a traveler to inherit their struggles and strengths. Use each character’s special abilities to interact with the world and enhance your tactics in turn-based battles. The Dancer’s alluring charm leads followers into battle, whereas the Apothecary can mix items to heal allies or unleash explosive attacks. Discover enemy weaknesses and target them to break through their defenses. Store Boost Points with each turn and then spend them at strategic times to strengthen abilities, chain attacks, or provide aid. Choose the path you wish to walk and discover what lies beyond the horizon. There's great Octopath Traveler gameplay in one of the most interested rpg games by Square Enix.

      for me the major bossfights just take way too much time and it doesnt really feel great to lose 20-30mins of time because you had a bad turn on a boss..., I also didnt like the amount of different story path's, too many characters and some of them have very dramatic backstories and then you have a girl that wants to dance. Thorné, hikari and themenos were the only ones I enjoyed, the others were mostly skipped, might have just gotten tired of doing character stories tho

      For me the only fight that felt like it lasted really long was the final boss, which… goes without saying, it’s the final boss of a JRPG.
      That being said, I haven’t fought the superboss yet and I know that’s going to be a mess.

    The world felt alive. By not having your characters be at the center of the universe the whole time it feels like there's more happening. The Path Actions mechanic really do add some serious depth to NPC interaction, allowing you to do more than just talk to them. The Inquire/Scrutinize path actions (which allow you to obtain information from NPCs) especially adds such astonishing detail, allowing the player to not only obtain an assortment of useful benefits, but also learn something interesting about the subject NPC, making the NPCs feel more like real people with their own lives to live, rather than just some random person walking around.

    I remember doing the Galdera fight back when the game first came out, before there were guides to win. My party was in the high 50's to high 60's, and it took me 7 tries to win. The 8 boss gauntlet leading up to the final battle was super easy, but that final battle was so difficult and fun.
    Levels in Octopath don't matter much, it's all about strategy. If you are level 85 and go up against Galdera without a good strategy you will lose. If you're level 60 and you have a solid plan you will win.

    • @edcaous
      @edcaous Před rokem +3

      This. Leveling up doesn't actually boost your stats much. The gap between level 50 and 75 is minimal.
      What matters is how you've organized your team. What jobs, equipment, skills you equip for each member is the difference between cheesing the final boss and struggling against it.
      There's a reason why speedrunning this game is possible.

    • @_egg5698
      @_egg5698 Před rokem +8

      I’ll be real, I found Galdera to be too much of a hassle. The fact you can’t save after the boss gauntlet is so annoying in a game about trial and error, especially in combat. If i wanted to try a new strategy, I would have to play through a half hour gauntlet first.
      As much as Octopath is about strategy, Galdera isn’t.

    • @rhymeswithmoose228
      @rhymeswithmoose228 Před rokem +4

      The speedrun beats Galdera at about level 30-40ish, iirc. Level seriously doesn't matter, especially if you abuse the best strats (namely max multiplier Sorcerer Tressa and 1 HP Fortitude, among others).

    • @Charnutboy
      @Charnutboy Před rokem +2

      Really? I found Galdera to be super annoying for no conceivable reason. There is genuinely no reason for the gauntlet not to follow up with a save, and his phases are so brutal to the point that it's simply better to exploit and overpower your way past them rather than interact since you risk so much by not doing so. I was not enjoying myself by the time I beat him, which is weird because I absolutely loved strategizing against the other bosses in the game.

    • @rhymeswithmoose228
      @rhymeswithmoose228 Před rokem +4

      @Mr. Tam O' Shanter Speaking from personal experience, there are effectively a few "optimal" (HEAVY SCARE QUOTES) strategies in the sense that certain combinations of abilities and set-ups let you steamroll the final boss, namely stacking so many multipliers you destroy everything. There are still a lot of different strategies that work, though. I've used relatively different methods basically every time I've fought the final boss and all of them worked with different amount of risk and time involved.

    About Path Actions, I really like Inquire/Scrutinize in this game.
    There's a very special flair to knowing more about random NPCs. In fact, some of those NPCs moved more than some bits of the story for the playable characters in Chapter 1/2.
    Inquire/Scrutinize shows a facet of NPC characters that you don't usually see in videogames, so whenever you're just enjoying the story and trying to understand the world around you, it's pretty great!

    This was my first JRPG, so my perspective going into it was not informed by decades of playing Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, etc.
    “Everyone remembers their first [JRPG]” is a phrase as true as ever to me after playing this. I owe it to this game to unlocking in my brain a newfound obsession with JRPG’s; with setting a high standard in almost all other aspects of game enjoyment; with gorgeous visuals and a masterpiece of musical composition.
    Despite its flaws, truly despite them, it’s such a special experience. I acknowledge the criticisms veterans have of how this and that with the narrative or voice acting could be better; but I don’t feel a shred of disappointment. I savored with ease every NPC character vignette through path actions or main and side quests. The world building strikes the sweet spot of handing you the beginnings of a compelling narrative and a wondrous , beautiful world, and asks you to take actions to make it your own story and experience to finish that story. This balance is probably the games biggest “hidden” strength.
    Having played and completed around 10 -15 JRPG’s since finishing this one in 2018, I still think about it and will definitely someday play through it again.

  • @DoktorWieg
    @DoktorWieg Před rokem +2

    Thinking about it, Octopath Traveler 1 feels almost like the early sessions of a D&D campaign. Hear me out :
    You have 8 separate people who never knew each other (or only loosely) being brought together to travel the world and explore its wonders. Now what's different here is that each Traveler seems to have their own one-on-one session with the GM before they end up part of the main group, which effectively fleshes out their own personal goals and motivations. The fact that they travel together is happenstance but with the added security they share being together is what keeps them together. So once they come across another Traveler, they help them with their issue and then hey, that person is leaving to travel why not just join the group? And once they get someplace where one of them needs to pursue their goal, they do and their companion helps them, as they expect they will when they'll have to deal with their own thing.

  • @ArandZyrus
    @ArandZyrus Před rokem +2

    Octopath Traveler's music is the stuff of legends and deserves way more praise than it gets (it lost to Red Dead Redemption 2 at the VGAs for some reason). Hearing Decisive Battle when I played the demo is what convinced me to buy the game (I didn't even have a Switch at the time, and used my brother's) and I still get a little teary eyed every time I listen to Determination (yes, I bought the soundtrack). The best part, in my opinion, is how the character's 'get pumped' themes (For Light, For Truth, For Revenge, etc.) transition into Battle at Journey's End, the track that plays for the final bosses of each character's story.
    It's such a shame that with DMCAs and such, reviewers can't really give props to the composers and the music, just a casual mention here and there. The music from games like the Suikoden series, Legend of Mana, and Live A Live were what got me into music in the first place, and why I went to college to be a music teacher.

    I can understand why it isn't for everyone, and I would have liked more party interaction, however, I personally love that this is eight seperate short stories. I personally find that really immersive. It's ultimately how the game was advertised too, so I don't think it's an entirely fair when I see people criticise this rather than it being simply a matter of taste. With that said, the tying it all together could have been done better as could have the party interactions.
    Now Octopath 2... Hoo boy, I love almost everything about it so far.

    • @SuperiorPosterior
      @SuperiorPosterior Před rokem +2

      I've heard numerous complaints about OT being a super grind fest, but I've honestly not felt it. The worst "grind" there is is only in the speedrun, far as I can tell.
      And I love that all right stories actually ARE connected, but not in a way the characters would ever realize.
      Lyblac gets Hornburg destroyed (affecting Olberic), sets up Yvon as Headmaster (affecting Cyrus), twists Mattias' faith (affecting Ophilia), takes Simeon on as a minion-which leads to the creation of the Crows (who killed Primrose's father), they steal the Dragon stones (affecting Therion) before abandoning that plan, because they've found the last descendent of Hornburg, whose blood is needed to open the Gate.
      Said descendent is a traveling Apothecary, going on adventures while writing in a journal. And then his wife gets sick (potentially Lyblac's doing), he tries to create a miracle cure and _succeeds,_ only for his wife to already be dead, so he uses it to cure a sickly child (Alfyn), leaves his journal with a pirate-turned-merchant (which Tressa then picks up), and ends up following Lyblac to the Gate out of desperation, under the ruse that Lyblac can resurrect his wife. Instead, he's turned into a monstrous form, to act as the Dark God's vessel, but with the last of his humanity he escapes. Sometime later he runs into a Hunter, and he turns them to stone... Affecting H'aanit.
      And then during the game you help out Kit (the First Side Quest, where he asks for a Grape), and meet him a number of times all across the continent while he's looking for his father. The Apothecary-turned-Redeye.
      Octopath Traveler is so amazing because, in any other game, you'd be playing as Kit and the eight Travelers would be the party members you choose between.

    • @nightsong81
      @nightsong81 Před rokem +2

      @@SuperiorPosterior I would have loved that - playing as Kit and building a party of people with interweaving histories that culminates in them really growing through their interactions with each other, and affecting how each other's stories play out. That's where Octopath I fell short for me. Still a great game, and I respect that they tried something different, even if it didn't work as well for me as it could have.

    • @SuperiorPosterior
      @SuperiorPosterior Před rokem +1

      @@nightsong81 oh yeah, it would have been awesome for sure!
      But I like that the Travelers don't realize the connection. I wish there was more interaction and that cutscenes would change depending on who was in your party. Basically, take Travel Banter to its logical conclusion. Have H'aanit join Therion in a cutscene where he's picking up someone's trail, as she marvels that he's able to track a human in a city like she tracks a deer in the woods, etc.
      Also, I wish there were more Scent of Commerce style quests for all the characters. Imagine Tressa helping Therion rob someone blind because they're the absolute worst sort of merchant! But if Primrose is in your party, she advocates for murder because said merchant is a human trafficker! The quest ultimately ends the same way, but feels different in the moment based on which characters you have on hand.

      The stories collectively felt much better in 2 as well, the only one I didn't care for much was agnea's but it was still a fitting story. Let's not talk about tressa's story cause that was honestly just a mess. Like I loved tressa but chapter 4 felt like it should have been after chapter 2, and chapter 3 after chapter 1. Very strange, and also a really underwhelming final boss that wasn't built up well.

    Ocotopath is literally one of my all time favorite games, when i first played it on the switch it felt like literal magic from how unique it was. I know a lot of people have issues with the first game's characters "not interacting", but (imo) i personally loved the side cuts of the travel banter we get of the characters weighing in after story beats and seeing how they pair with one another. Like how Alfyn and Primrose kind of have a thing going on, or how Therion feels Alfyn is one of the few people he can be a bit honest with. It feels... earned from seeing it, because the work was put in to get to that point and it feels like a refreshing treat to be had.

    I just recently started playing Octopath Traveler 2 again after putting it down for a month or so and it's kinda funny- usually when I put down a big long game like that it feels like too much trouble to pick it up again and remember what all I was doing, but with this it was pretty easy, and I think the fragmented structure (which is one of the most common criticisms I've heard about the series) actually helps with that. Because at any given time I only have to remember a little bit of story, and the game features a journal that recaps it for you, so it didn't feel too overwhelming to dive back in. Just an interesting positive to the way the story works that I haven't heard many people talk about yet!

While the stories are overall disconnected, they at least actually hide the lore that ties them all together in a proper sense rather than "Oh btw here's this big bad out of nowhere". Additionally, the writing is immensely better in the 2nd game, with a proper deconstruction of each of the jobs, rather than the expectation of it. I will say as someone who is playing Octopath Traveler 2 right now, they made a few good quality of life changes (like being able to speed up battles), "Crossed Path" stories where duos from the main party go on a single separate adventure together, and Latent Powers, powers exclusive to one character which can range from going twice in one turn, to turning a multicast spell into a single target with much higher damage, special skills that unlock purely for that character, and more. There are more path actions, (day and night versions) and the stories overall are much better.
    Take a break, JRPGs are time-consuming, just know it does get MUCH better in the sequel.

    I didn't have that much of a problem with the weakness system because a lot of it was pretty easy to guess.
    The tree enemy is going to be weak to chopping attacks (axes) and fire (because trees burn), this hard shelled creature needs to be split open (axes, spears), the fire enemies are weak to ice and vice versa, same with light and dark and wind and lightning.
    It also helps knowing the order which the weaknesses are displayed in. Allowing your brain to fill in the gaps.

    • @28Pluto
      @28Pluto Před rokem +1

      I think his point was that there is a Steam achievement to unlock EVERY weakness of EVERY enemy.
      And if you level-up to a certain degree, it's almost impossible to find the weaker enemy you might have missed.
      In other words, you need to be really methodical about this to get it 100% (where an average player can easily finish the game with only getting 75%)
