Inspiring? Bro, main character literally cannot catch a break. Everything that can go wrong does. Even when he does things the right way he is pelted with failure and disappointment. Every shred of hope he could possibly have keeps getting ripped up further. He’s finally getting a group of comrades again and he’s about to lose them all over…again. He’s already nearing or past his prime and theres only so much more he can take before he either bites it or ends it. I just want to see how much pain he must endure before his story ends

But I managed to go through, for looking up at a fictional character that takes it in the ass every day of his life, I don't care if it sounds childish, a manga character and his author saved my sanity.

But, for me one of the worst amd saddest moments for Guts is after the eclipse when he runs to the forest and he thinks about his dead friends and all he has been taking for granted. The agony Guts must have felt and coming to the realisation that you have lost everything again. That was pure sadness

That’s not true, Guts is in his early 20s in the beginning of the series. As of right now he’s supposed to be in his late thirties or early 40s as well as Casca. When Guts left Griffith before the eclipse they were 24-27 year old and it’s been 15 years in the manga since the eclipse.

Yeah that's a hypocrisy I've always noticed
Rape being judged harshly in stories is honestly a good thing. It is so often done poorly, as wish fulfilment for the creator of the story. Holding it to a high standard is expected when 99% of the time its just dreadful, and people being aprehensive because of it, and judging a story harshly without having read it for it having notorious rape scenes is not surprising, as again, 99% of the time the apprehension is warranted. Berserk is very much an exception.
So what is different about berserk?
Very simple. Its the consequences. In most things, rape is not handled with the severity it should be. The consequences are not shown beyond the scene after. However in berserk, the rape scenes all have major impacts on the characters, just as a death would. Because in berserk, rape is treated like it is, a severely violent act, a demonstration of someones power of you. And that fucks people up.
Guts deals with the trauma his entire life, struggling with human contact, not being able to be separate from his sword, and not being able to open up to people, some of which may have existed without the rape but not to the same extent. His trauma also is treated very realistically.
The rape of casca literally breaks her. She was already on the edge, literally suicidal not long before this, so having the eclipse happen along with the rape, she broke. There is also the later not exactly rape but when guts choke slammed casca and would have raped her if he had not come back to his senses. This had direct consequences, casca now fears guts, being in her child-like state she cant be reasoned with either, so while guts can rationalise and temporarily suppress his issues with being touched, casually cant.
Farnese and the horse was not a rape, but again was pretty fucking close. This one is a bit iffy, im not a fan of it for that reason, but it still works as a way of exemplifying how fucked guts' world is to Farnese, and breaking her out of her ideology.
Then there is wyald. Wyald is just bad. Thats the one bad prominent rape scene in berserk. The entire time I was reading that it felt like it was just miura making an excuse for casca to get her tits out. Wyald is the only real bad part of berserk, that bit is a blight that I see every time I reread berserk.
To sum up, berserk treats rape with the gravity that it holds, and does not treat it lightly as far other stories do. This treatment from other stories will make people wary of anything involving rape, and likely to judge it harshly if they have not read it.

I have to agree. The wyald rape scenes are the only ones that don’t feel like they really have a purpose other than to say “wylad bad” which prompts an immediate no shit response. The others at lest have narrative value, even if they make us as the reader uncomfortable (and they absolutely should). It’s the only scene people have a very valid point about. Outside of that one instance I wish people would stop trying to water berserk down. You don’t get the emotional highs when a character overcomes their trauma without the understanding of the trauma to begin with. What makes the wounds section such a good few chapters is that it’s healing for both characters. And we can sympathize with guts because we’ve seen first hand his trauma with Donovan and what it did to him. We don’t have to always like the darkness of berserk, but Miura was pretty spot on in most cases with appropriately mixing them into the story and using dark themes in his storytelling. And that’s pretty respectable.

The biggest tragedy to happen to Guts is that Miura was unable to write a happy ending for him
As an aside, the whole speech Griffith gave to Charlotte about not seeing his soldiers as equals or friends is complete bs. Griffith super cared about his men (especially Guts and Casca), it's stated so multiple times. Most notably when he has his PTSD attack after sleeping with Gennon. If he really didn't care about them, he wouldn't have been able to sacrifice them to the God Hand in the first place. They would not accept a meaningless sacrifice, like when the slug count tried to sacrifice Guts. The whole idea is that you need to rip a piece of your soul out to let darkness flow into its place.

To be specific, I don't think that he saw most of the jobber Hawks as equals necessarily, but almost certainly as friends. Guts and Casca though, I absolutely believe that he viewed them as equals. If your metric for considering someone as an equal is the willingness to risk one's life for another; then I can only point to the first fight with Zodd where Griffith absolutely risked his life to save Guts.
