"What Has Changed? Absolutely NOTHING!" - Isabel Oakeshott On Tory MP Defecting To The Labour Party

  • Isabel Oakeshott believes "some dirty deal" has been done behind the scenes after Tory MP Natalie Elphicke defected to the Labour Party.
"What exactly has changed about Labour's policy on immigration since she castigated them on it? Absolutely nothing!"
Natalie Elphicke’s defection to Labour came as a shock to many in Westminster, given some of her previous comments and attacks on the party’s policies on immigration.
The MP for Dover hit out at “unelected” Rishi Sunak’s “tired and chaotic Government” and failure to deliver on his promise to stop migrants arriving in the UK via the Channel as she crossed the floor on Wednesday.
She expressed confidence in Sir Keir Starmer’s party’s ability to “tackle this issue of the small boats crossings”.

Oh what crap. Elphicke isn't going to be an MP after the election, she's not up for a Peerage, and she's voted with her feet based on her conscience. But the advantage of her defection to Starmer is huge. So as a FORMER lifetime Tory voter, now a fully paid up member of the Labour party, and campaigner, I think that the party was right to accept her. Note that it wasn't solely Starmer's decision, the party leadership vote on such matters. And as a matter of principle, why should anyone be prevented from changing their mind?

I had to google up on Natalie Elphicke, and this was the EXACT MP who criticised Marcus Rashford for him focusing more on "playing politics" than playing football after what happened in Euro 2020, when Marcus was focusing on calling on the government to act over free school meals and campaigning against child food poverty. Perhaps if she actually acted like a politician and actually combat those kind of issues, she might not get as much stick by the public, especially members in her constituency.

It doesn't suit the left to have a socialist or mixed economy model thrown open to the world, and it doesn't help preserve the culture and constitution cherished by the right. How the pro immigration fringes of each party became the mainstream is an absolute scandal. Controlled borders should've remained a matter of consensus in a pluralistic system.

Tory one down, Labour one up, good. And as a matter of principle, which tory shills blag on and on about, why should anyone be prevented from changing their mind?

Rishi's only prayer now is Proportional Representation. If he plugged for a referendum early Autumn ahead of the GE he could water down the Labour vote significantly. A number of anti-tory voters will swing towards the libs and greens instead. The (favoured demographic) and hard left vote would go to Galloway and the split of the right vote will then pay in full to Tory or Reform with no wastage where Labour profit from the split. The big scary risk of this gamble would be a lib-lab-green coalition would be taking us back into the EU faster than you could say Jack Robinson.

People are inclined to defect to what they are pretty certain will be the next government. Starmer desperately needs to change the balance of his own likely cacus to a somewhat more centerist position and reduce the power of the former Hackney CC and Corbynite faction which is still powerful in Labour just below the surface. It is also a move that takes attention off the Gaza issue when it is a major division and danger to Lanour. It is telling that some of the Blairite babes in Starmers team are giving it all for their man and totally supporting Elphiniks joining Labour
