- “What would destroy the Labour Party's fortunes? I don't know, something to do with Keir Starmer and a donkey.”
Polly Mackenzie, Daniel Finkelstein and Peter Mandelson ponder what it would take for Rishi Sunak to defy political gravity and deny Labour a majority at the general election.

It would take deporting all non-conservative voters to Rwanda
Definitely their next great plan 😂
Raising the voting age 78
If Catherine and Charles is really sick, I hope they get better.
To believe anything that 'The Royal Family' say or do is impossible because their kingdom from the line of king David is a LIE/DECEPTION only Jews ✡️ can be in the line of David and the king line ended before JESUS CHRIST'S birth.
I hope and 🙏 🤲 and pray every African nation and nations with people of African-descent file lawsuits for reparations from the Royal families and Western nations until the COMING AGAIN OF JESUS CHRIST.
It makes me wonder if these people are mentally insane who want the conservatives in power after the last 14 years! What the country needs is a leader with strength and compassion, common sense. Democracy is coming to a crossroad and the uk needs a leader who can steer it to safety .
Who do you propose?
You don't mean Starmer for strength and compassion? Around 30 policy U-turns in the last year alone, dropped the £28 billion green pledge (less than 2.5% of national budget) and continues with two-child benefit cap (£2800 extra to help each child per year).
Didn’t we say the exact same about Labour after Gordon Brown? 🤣 People have short memories
Dead Party Walking
The reason why Labour lost so disastrously in Scotland was that, during the independence referendum, Labour joined forces with the Tories in their No campaign rather than run their own. To many Labour voters, this was an absolute betrayal given people were still feeling the effects of Thatcherism on their communities, in particular her war on the miners. Labour have still to recover from this massive miscalculation on their part.
Labour continues to work with the Tories in Scotland to this day.
Please turn the lights off and never darken our doors again
Mixed metaphors never work.
At this stage the only way for the Tories to win is Labour to decide to withdraw all their candidates. Even then I wouldn't fancy their chances against the Lib Dems and Greens.
Why would anyone in their right mind what the Tories to remain in power?
The tories are Toast
Mass population amnesia, and the second coming - if he arrives wearing a blue rosette. !!
I have a bone muscle disease . Progressive and also a " side effect " symptom is uveitis. Inflammation in my eyes. I sometimes have injections in my eyes. Today, my eye has flared . Stress is a major factor. The " talk " of changing or stopping my pip is absolutely the reason why. I understand that many people shouldn't be getting pip, and they are ruining the benefits system for the people who need it most.

They lost Scotland because of Jack McConnell and attitudes like 'there is no way of leaving'
Vote the Tories out
Need a unselfish leader!
It would take a fixed election...don't rule it out
Thank you for making my question the theme for the podcast!
Some serious brain power on this programme. Mandelsons answer around the 22 minute mark was a masterclass in logic, reason, delivery. Great stuff.
THE END IS NEAR FOR THE TORIES FOR GOOD INCOMING
Change to a MMP system of elections as this would stop Labour getting a majority
A miracle!!!
google; tactical voting stop the tories - find your local constituency and see which candidate is favored to win over the tories, so that in all possible counties the tories loose with the most seats lost, then when labour form a new government advocate for voting reform; proportional representation instead of first-past-the-post, so that the tories never can win a majority again.
It would be war.

How amazing that Mandelson with impunity spouts his views on the defects of others, quite ingenuously and entertainingly, whilst having been twice sacked in his time for misdemeanours of his own making. Positioned in the forefront of the discussion, sometimes a little too gossipy for my liking, yet simultaneously remaining in the shadows is another accomplished art form, an inexplicable mystery (hence the moniker of Prince of Darkness), managing to trouser £10 million with no sign of the Greensill stigma which afflicted Lord Cameron.
what to do when looking for unbiased reporting is get a guest on who is in almost complete control of one partys policy and comms
Maybe if Starmer comes out with “we’re all right “ a la Kinnock then maybe. And yet I still think looking at the numbers there is a chance the Tories could still squeak it. Labour seem too confident.
No comeback only out 😂😂😂
It would take Keir Starmer eating a live granny during PMQs for them to even have a chance of retaining power. I mean, if he did eat a granny, it might reduce his majority to 30?
A miracle.
Too late. It’s over.
all resign & start again
All resign. Stop your sentence there, and forget about the tories being elected.
Integrity, honesty, decency, a genuine sense of humour, empathy, etc. These qualities would facilitate a Tory comeback, but as no Tory possesses these qualities and values, a comeback is about as likely as Sunak growing a backbone.
Mandelson and Starm are the Tories' best asset, not forgetting crypt dweller Blair. The longer they are around, the more public exposure, the more they are seen and heard - The less attractive 'New' 'New Labour' become.
Daniel Finkelstein has been getting a bit testy recently. Me thinks he's finally realised the Tories stand no chance and is miffed about it.
Look for the three wise men & a miracle
Tory comeback would require the mass release of hallucogenic drugs, thus causing vast amount of the voting public to suffer from total amnesia.
These people don't live in the real world
Always a pleasure listening, I was wondering - was there ever a chance that Rishi could win or was he always doomed from the start no matter what he did?
Pay back the 14 billion that they gave to their mates during covid.
Mandelson is a man who wants to change the team but not the politics. Highly entitled man who's basically a Conservative

Why is it that this channel seems to support the Tories? The issues that get discussed all seem to be supportive of the right. Look at the title of this one, where there is an implication that the Tories could achieve a comeback. This would be on whose wishlist? Not that of some 3/4 of the British people. But it is in a lot of the British media such as Times Radio where you have a strong right-wing bias. And in most cases, it's the UK's right-wing media which is foreign-owned, such as the Times which is owned by Murdoch of course.
I am no longer subscribing.
What I'm getting from this is that party memberships shouldn't vote for leaders... So who does decide? The MP's alone? Super democratic
The people?
The Times and other clown car media outlets going back to ignoring things that they do, like they did between 2010 and 2022
You will find that very few journalists actually take any kind of responsibility for whatever it is they wrote a few days/months/years earlier. Think of Johnson and Gove - look up the promises they made and then wonder how it is either is allowed anywhere near any kind of political power.
@@charlesbruggmann7909 yep, another symptom of our broken political/media culture. Not only are there no consequences for lies and blatant untruths, the people who propagate those lies and untruths get promoted to high office

Having a bunch of unionists discuss what they think independence voters want is pointless.
But it is pointless. "Independence" is DEAD.
It will take me and millions of others in the silent majority who WILL vote for the strong, stable, dependable Tory Party despite all this faux outrage from the left.
Let's look at this objectively. Just for a moment, forget about any people involved and do your OWN research: Choose your own non-biased data source to look up and compare the list of the "Top 10 Most Liberal Countries to the list of "Top 10 Most Conservative Countries. See how each country is rated for each flourishing factor: The Happiest, the Safest, the most Personal Freedom of all countries in the world.
You will find that the Most Liberal Countries are also rated the Happiest, Safest, and with Most Personal Freedom - without exception. (Norway, Sweeden, New Zealand, Canada, etc.)
You will also find that the Most Conservative Countries are rated Dead Last - rated Least Happy, Least Safe, and have the Least Personal Freedom - without exception. (Yemen, Iran, Sudan, Pakistan, etc.)
USA is currently somewhere in the middle for flourishing factors and political ideology.
Based on your OWN research now you know what is working and what to expect if your vote moves our country more towards one extreme or the other (Without Exception, More Liberal = Happier, Safer, Freer versus More Conservative - Less Happy, Less Safe, Less Free).
The Only thing remaining is to decide if you prefer flourishing or not. Simple.
Sorry Times Radio, but listening to Mandelson is giving me a bad case of hives. I am sure your next podcast will be worth it.

"....and arts based universities"....I don't think so. Growth is through STEM subjects, not worthless arts degrees
Are you being ironic...or out of your three brain cells? The arts bring huge amounts to the UK. STEM is also important (Maths teacher here). It is not about one or the other. It is about developing both. Don't forget: some people can choose either, as they have broad based abilities, but a lot of people whom you'd stop doing arts cannot opt for STEM as they are not that way gifted.
@@annepoitrineau5650 No one is stopping them but far more funding should be spent on STEM subjects and research. Much more beneficial to society in the long run.
@@callum1131 You are again, opposing arts and STEM. They are undissociable. Just say that the government is not spending enough on education, whatever the subject. E.g: our current society would benefit from knowing a lot more about UK history and about world history. It would help against intolerance and against the current government and their fake patriotism.
Moreover, do you realise that 10 000 years ago at least, our ancestors were already practising forms of art...as well as engineering through building. The Greeks, the HIndu Valley civilisation (to whom the Greeks and the Arabs owed the maths they gave us) did not really separate art and engineering.
