    My 1976 Johnson 75 hp. ‘Stinger’ has does the same thing. I have to touch the electric choke momentarily with throttle lever to take off. My motor was rebuilt top to bottom by an original Johnson dealership.

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. When I hit the primer it wants to die. But similar issues. You may just have a link n sync issue. Carbs may be opening too late. Ignition spark doesn't have enough fuel to ignite, timing off just a hair. But again, it could be anything, but I would think with a factory rebuild hopefully it's something simple. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

    Another thing to try to help isolate the issue of the bulb going empty is unhook hose from motor, squeeze the bulb until firm and wait to see if it goes mushy after 20-30 min.

    Some had jets to lean in midrange.
    I worked at a dealership and had to install richer pilot and mid range jets on these back in 1980s an OMC recall warranty.
    These were such good motors .
    Unless it's water dirt in carbs or restricted fuel line or vent on tank air leak in fuel line etc if it just started doing that .

And yes, I went through the service bulletins with it but it was already done with the jets changed but they never changed the water indicator hose location to the top so I didn't bother with it either. I figured it ran all these years without an overheating problem why do it now. Thanks again !

    I had the same problem,it was a leak in the fuel line connecter.When I stopped the motor,the fuel was running back from the leak and emptying the fuelpipe. (air lock) With the primer,I found if the motor was inclined at an angle towards the boat (me) the fuel was not running into the engine but running out of the carb intake,so,no fuel getting into the carb.

The plastic fuel fitting at the end of the hose hit the concrete causing a hairline crack that was not visible. That was where the air leak was. Hey. Is this a motor you just got or you've had it and the problem just started. Maybe it needs the cable adjusted or the shift rod isn't screwed in/out enough. Or the clutch dog is going bad.? You can try and disconnect the cable and manually put it in reverse, then adjust the cable to that distance and see if that works. Is it making any clunking or grinding noises. Check the oil too. Great advice about the FACTORY service manual! Cant agree more. But on to the motor: 1st lets make sure it really is getting fuel, and has adequate compression (possible the head will need to come off to examine cyl walls as skirts could be shot and not show up on compression tests). when it stalls, pull the plugs and see if they are bone dry. if they are, pull the air silencer cover off and squirt some premix into each cyl one by one and see how it reacts. if it pauses and then stalls, you know its ignition related. If not, its something in the carbs not sealing, float needle not sealing, blocked idle air orifice etc. or possibly your tank has an issue. if it is ignition related, usually heat soak (which is what you might have) is a bad stator but run through all DVA cranking voltage tests to be sure. The other possibility is its running warm. not hot, but warm enough (like over 165f) to cause heat soak issues. But a warning sign for me here is the piston skirts aka the motor acting up when warm. not necessarily something to worry about just yet, but keep that possibility in the back of your mind! cheers.

      Hey. Oh it's getting fuel, when I bump the primer key it wants to die and fast. But I like your "heat soak" theory, like any motor the temperature rises after you cut it off. Something may be happening there as the temp goes up but I would think after sitting for 30+ minutes it would cool off some. Never have a problem while trolling, and I cut the motor off every time I catch a fish, it's only after I cut it off for awhile is when it starts happening. And it's just been getting worse over time. So stay tuned and we'll figure this thing out. Thanks again !

      Plus when you’re using the ethanol gas, it destroys the inner lining of the fuel hose. An easy way to check is to cut about 2” off the fuel hose, then slice lengthwise. Ethanol makes the lining separate from the walls and break down. If the lining is failing, replace the hose with automotive grade fuel line, those don’t have a lining. To protect the auto fuel line from UV damage, cover with an auto wiring cover. Since the primer bulb empties, the issue may be the line going to the primer bulb….

  • @Ray56z
    @Ray56z Před rokem

    Neighbor borrowed my tank and hose to test his outboard. After I got it back that outboard ran like crap. I began noticing the bulb was empty. I asked him what type of fuel he'd filled the tank back up with. He said the recreational like I told him at the station down the road. Asked if he'd put any additives in it like seafoam, stabilize, etc., no, but then said when he was using it on his outboard he'd put some of his home distilled hooch in the tank-he makes a gallon every few days, a drunk, believes hooch fixes everything-like he always does all his repaired outboards.
    Damn hooch ate the backflow seals in the bulb and the O-rings where the hose snaps on that tank. Replaced the bulb, hose, seals on both fittings, and so far hasn't seemed to hurt the fuel pump, carb, or primer. Told him if he sells that outboard to buy his own fuel system, can't use mine.
