I remember when this video first came out and I was trying to learn another language. Seeing all these youtubers make videos like "POLYGLOT LEARNS SPANISH IN THREE MONTHS!!!!!" and obviously this video above us gave me pretty unrealistic expectations of learning a language.
Now coming back to it I have since gotten pretty good at italian and can understand the whole conversation they had. Make sure to give it time and use resources that are good for you personally (please just do yourself a favor and avoid Duolingo). Italian is a easy enough language. The grammar is tricky but that's literally the hardest part, get comfortable with it and the language is yours. Buona fortuna, spero che ti divertiate negli studi!

To answer your questions about how I found the top 1,000 words, it was basically just a Google search. It appears as though these lists are flawed, so you may need to do some manual translating for yourself - if you notice you use a word a lot in your native language, but don't know the translation, that's probably a good sign that you should look it up.
That being said, I think we should make a more reputable source online with a proper list of the top 1,000 words in all languages. And I might your help to make that happen.

    2. Learn most common verbs, tenses, their conjugation and connective words such as ‘on’ ‘and’ (try and understand the rules, and irregulars)
    3. Use technology to help you with your language learning (translate music, watch Netflix shows with subtitles, listen to radio stations and podcasts)
    4. Practice speaking (e.g. get a pen pal to skype or message, or just speak out loud) it’s okay to make mistakes

@IcedTails He might be a fast learner.. but that doesnt mean you're bad or you cant do it. If you're really passionate about learning the languages you are currently then it doesnt matter if you learned a language before or after you're 30.
Also, If chinese was the first language you ever learned (besides your native lang or English) then know that its always difficult to learn a new language for the first time. However, once you've learned it, the next time you learn a new language itll be easier for you. Its just your brain becoming accustomed to language-learning.
Also as another person said Chinese is very different from say Italian/Spanish/French. You probably had to learn chinese alphabets/characters from scratch, whereas for Italian most letters are similar if not same and many words from French/Spanish/English (the 3 languages he already knows and speaks) resemble Italian words too.

You may probably know 1984 and the importance of language as one of the main themes in this novel: in this dystopian world, the language has been extremely simplified to the point where concepts can't even be imagined due to the limited amount of vocabulary.

I’m not only impressed by how, as being a native Portuguese speaker, I could understand your entire conversation, but also as how valuable your method to learning a foreign language seems.
I often try learning languages by myself but the traditional way seems pointless and I struggle exactly with the gaps I feel the vocabulary I’ve learned leaves.
I’ll definitely change my approach to languages by using your tips and maybe even starting with a sister language to mine.
