This in my humble opinion, is the most beautiful Workstation ever created. I FINALLY got my hands on one, and it does not disappoint. There are times I don't even bother putting the side panel back on if I were to remove it for whatever reason. Mine is running dual Xeon E5-2690 V3 CPU'S and has a generous 224 GB RAM. I have an RTX 3060 12GB as my GPU and am gaming like a boss.

I'm just gonna say I admire the confidence of whoever thought it was a good idea to put one of those insanely HEAVY beasts on a glass table. lol

After two years of daily work with these machine in some very rough conditions ( for those who know the thickness of the sidepannels on these machines, I'm talking dents in them here) I can attest to the toughness and superb engineering of these machines. Great product from HP, well worth the price!

Yep 100%, I got rid of all my hand-built rigs and picked one of those up for 500USD, dual 2698v4, 512 GB ram, added a mv02 card, bob's ur uncle for the price of and entry gaming rig, oh yes, I also got 2 RTX A4000 for I can now run pretty much all I want including medium size AI models under 16GB vram at totally acceptable speeds. I also got a Z440 for peanuts, to host the processor I took from the Z840, as single 2695v3 that came with it, so I can re-use my extra ram and disks and keep it as a backup or cluster it, I'll see. But the room for upgrade is insane, when you know high end GPUs will decrease in price in the coming years, those will be upgradable for still a long time, they are fully compatible with one another, unlike consumer grade gear and very frugal on electricity too.
      Not looking back!

Hi, just ordered this machine (2nd hand), and absolutely love the SFF unit's inside the LFF disks. Referred to 'High Density Storage Option', But I am not able to find them anywhere (pref. 2nd hand). Any ideas? Or was this option never offered?

I wish the BIOS of this computer would tell the Manu and Model of the computer.
I often remote telnet into equipment and would like to use the SYSTEMINFO command.
When I do that on this box is seems to give make / model info on the system motherboard.
On a Dell computer, it gives the make/model of the PC - simply because DELL populated the BIOS that way.
I hope HP does this in the future.

The chassis of HP Z-840 computer is a real masterpiece. It's the state-of-the-art design, unmatchable, inspired by old Apple Pro but better. I recently purchased one Z-840 dual processor for running CAD (NX and Solid Works). I truly believed I am getting the top workstation money can buy. I was not afraid to pay $7,200 for it. I was so proud that I almost posted a picture of my new workstation on my Facebook.
But I was not impressed when turned the power button on. HP Z-840 (with HP Z Turbo Drive G2 512 GB) needs 1 min 20 sec to boot! My 4-year old HP Z-400 (with 512 GB SSD) needs 40 sec to boot. My 3-year old 15” MacBook Pro with Retina display needs 24 sec to boot Windows on Bootcamp.
The last computer in my possession that needed ~1.5 min to boot was an IBM PS/2 386 22 years ago. HP Technical Support updated BIOS and all drivers on my Z-840 but couldn't improve the booting performance. LOL.

I bet your Z800 came with E55xx/X55xx/W55xx CPUs in the first place and you took the chance, to pick 6core-CPUs and thus jump to X5690's.
Unfortunately, to support X56xx-class CPUs, your Z800 workstation requires an updated version of your mainboard. You can check for yourself:
There is the assembly-number sticker fairly in the middle of the board. It reads something like AS#123456-001. The important part are the last three digits. If they read 001 or 002, you run a first-gen mainboard. If it reads 003, it's the latest version supporting X56xx CPUs.
If your board is of type 001 or 002, you will have power-up problems with your x5690 like you describe: Power-up succeeds only after repeated attempts. Otherwise, the z800 does not even enter POST. Apart from swapping your motherboard to the 003 version, you cannot fix this problem. No way.
The good news however, is, that apart from these boot-up problem, your system will just run fine. That is, once powered up and booted, it will run stable without problems.
      Hope, that helps.
