I bought a really cheap HP Z800 workstation and the problems I had with it are shown in this video, also how I dealt with them.
The specs said that it was fitted with twin Xeon 5675s, so it had 12 cores and 24 threads.
It also had 40 Gig of RAM, a 2TB Hard Drive, a DVD re-writer, a low end video card and Windows 10 Pro installed.

Most Z800s with that spec will normally go from about £500 upwards, because they’re still a very much in demand item, even though it’s 12 years since they first came out.
But It had a few problems - to say the least!
One Problem was the CPUs overheating because the coolers weren't fitted properly, and there was virtually no thermal compound on them !

That's a really good write up, excellent explanation of the problems you had and how you solved them.
Thanks very much Peter.
Thank you for the tips, it was helpful.
Thanks very much and glad you like it.
Thank you very much! You helped me with a problem of memory. I wish a lot of subs and happiness! Thank you!
Glad to hear that and I'm glad you let me know - thank you.
your channel is very helpful to a man who has just purchased a z800! Thank you!
I'm glad I can help you, theyre a really excellent machine.
@@AlbyTastic thanks again!
Very detailed story. Thanks! Just wondering - what version of your psb? I only noticed REV 1.02. What about numbers on white sticker.
My Dell T5500, with dual xeons, I bought in 2019 also came with cpu 1 without thermal paste. The seller even had done a stress test!
Of course, I detected it as soon as started to test the machine and removed the coolers, since the hexacore xeons were low power (E5645), and should not reach the temps they were reaching.
About a month later, it was running with 2x X5680 and I had upgraded the cpu heatsink of CPU1 with the U016F part.
And don't you learn a LOT when that happens? It's almost worth it! Or is it?
Great info
Thanks for sharing 👍
You're very welcome
For curiosity, the missing top cover suggests yours had the rackmount rails installed.
I have z620 and it works fine specially with After effects and Premier and also Pro tools as audio studio workstation ( DAW)
Love the new thumbnail BTW
Thanks very much - just an idea i had.
Hi Alby…enjoyed to”vid”….did ever make the supercharge vid? Steve a z600 owner and Upgraded with gtx 1660 gpu and new nvme ssd..and loving it
Hi Steve thanks very much for your comments - I'm working on it at the moment - the first section will be about cloning the OS from the SAS hard drive to a much faster SSD. Hope to get it finished soon.
Definitely need to add another few tubes of thermal paste
@Alby do you know how to disassemble the front cover with the locking mechanism in it? If got myself a Z800 dirty as .... Will make the machine look and operate as new or even improved. Will find a solution finally and maybe you will help me along. Cheers from a fan.
Thanks for that question Robbie - I'm not sure because I've necer done it, but I'll look into it. If the locking mechanism is stiff you could try something like WD40 but if I found out a solution I may make a quick video about it so keep watching.
Great content, did you fix the problem in the ram modules? I have a z800 with the same
issue.
No, I'm afraid not. It looksas if there is a fault in the actual connectors, not in the RAM itself. I've been using the Z800 for a few months now with 80Gb RAM without any other problems.
Hello , saludos! Que tal es la z800 hoy día con una Nvidia quadro 5800 ? Sirve para editar videos y jugar?
Giving my full support, keep on vlogging, more power to your channel from Erros
Thanks very much Erros
My Z800 takes a long time to boot up. It takes over a minute for the Windows logo to appear.
Can it be shortened in Bios?
Did you ever find a solution to it ?
Eckhart Tolle?
Can this boot with one cpu
As far as I know yes because there are Z800s supplied with only 1 processor but I've never tried it. Of course it wouldn't be as poweful as a fully configured machine with 2 processors.
Howdy
Hi there how you doing?
I’ve had mine for 4 years now and I haven’t had any problems with it
I have several too and usually no problems at all because they are such a great machine. But this one had some, luckily if you know Z800s and others, you can usually put them right.
@@AlbyTastic Mine has a GTX 1070, dual 5687's 48 gigs of ram and severa lSSD drives including a PCI-E SSD from 2012. 1.6 terabytes I got for 75 dollars
@@miatageekscott You're just trying to make me jealous - LOL. Well I hope you subscribe because I've got some way out stuff coming up - including how to install Windows 11 on almost any PC, including the Z800! - and later how to take your speed figures into the stratosphere!!
@@AlbyTastic I’ll have to watch that
@@miatageekscott lol…I have 2 of them with those exact specs with 80tb each.
Oh dear, look, that amount of thermal paste probably won't hurt anything. But just so you are aware for the future that is far too much. A small dab the size of a large pea is all that is required to provide proper contact. Some high end thermal pastes are actually slightly conductive and using that amount will result in such a mess, leaking out the side, and potentially damaging the SMD's around the cpu socket when it leaks out.
Thanks very much indeed for your comments but It was only a small amount - it looks much more because it was photographed close to.
Ho
I also got a z800 for around 100 pounds a while back.
duel xeon5690's
40 gb of ram.
6 500gb hardrives 4 mechanicle, 2 solid state.
And a low end GPU from around when the machine was new. and two network adaptors I didn't really need.
physical state was great. not a scratch that I could see, even still had the plastic film on one panel. Basically looked new.
pretty good deal I felt.
I also had a simlilar ram issue, where one of the slots was given a failing rank. But this only happend after It had owned it for a while.
I moved the ram to another slot, but it flashed an error about ram opopulatino rules, if i had had the ram lopsided.
I assume that's just a thing with these z800's? I later got a ram upgrade was fits into the 8 top slots, thus bypassing the bad slot and remaining even. But I am concerned another slot might fail in the future. so do you know if the slots can be fixed at all?
Far too much compound, you can use an old credit card
