cnet.co/SMk6Lv Bill Detwiler cracks open the HP Z820 Workstation, which packs two Xeon CPUs and up to 512GB of RAM in a near tool-less, super-quiet case.
nice machine, just bought a z620,was broken.... Just fixet it with a ssd and a new fresh instal of wndws 10. Its nice to use such a pro pc,esspacialy when you only payed 150 euro for it!love it. For a dual cpu 16 core machine, and you just dont hear them running,a great pc!
Fantastic video! Thank you! I own four of these, all upgraded to SSDs and other improvements. I had Best Buy work on one ONCE. Never again. They forced the components out in the wrong order. I watched them puzzling over it and just randomly grabbing green labels and trying to force things to come out, like the drive holders. They put the parts back in with no grasp how they actually installed. I thought the machine was ruined. I watched this video than called my CTO and he had me send him photos. He identified what Best Buy had done and sent me to the garage for a crow bar. NO KIDDING!!! I had to crowbar out the video card component because they had shoved it back in incorrecty - attaching it to the case frame and not the actual holder tabs. If the Geek Squad had taken time to watch this video all this would have been avoided.
This is all really wonderful but how about the other side where the power cabling is routed. Or the front panel for that matter. I have a stuck power switch or a short somewhere. I am now facing the nightmare of either trying figure out how to pull the front off (no idea how to do this) or calling HP and paying what I am sure will be a non-trivial amount for them to pull the thing apart. I could fix or replace a power switch on any cheap server case easily.
Nice review. I also did a review of the Z820 on my channel. I also made a documentary about HP's Workstation Labs in Fort Collins Colorado, where the Z820 is designed and defined. It also has a lot of info about all of HPs workstations.
Dr sausage fingers 500 gb of RAM is useful if you're working with multiple 4k video tracks that have effects, titles, etc, and you want full resolution playback without any latency.
i have a z820 and am getting 4 beeps and 4 red led with 2 second break intervals. i have removed cmos battery for 10 minutes with mains power unplugged and motherboard discharged. but still wont boot. still get the 4 beeps and red led's. any idea? i tested power supply without being plugged in to pc and the fans go so means power supply is fine, so must be another issue.
How in the heck do you take off the blind connectors and cables from the back? Those little plastic things have me boggled. I have the back off now need the cables? HELP a chica out!
It is _possible_ to purchase the largest and most expensive LRDIMM Chips and have 512 GB of RAM. Alternately you do not have as much money available and want to use all those DIMM Slots to hold smaller and cheaper RAM Chips. With dual Processors you will have at least 16 Cores and could have more than twice that many. With 512 GB of Memory divided by 16 that is 32 GB per Core (which as you point out is not a tiny amount). When you have that many Cores available you do not want half of them sitting idle (and it would not be a good idea to buy a dual Processor Computer when you intend to have it sit idle a lot of the time). By having lots of Cores and lots of Memory for each Core, along with considerable HD and SSD Storage you can have this Computer sit in the Boss's Office and run the rest of the Office off of Thin-Clients. That makes the Office's tiny Desks have more space available and make the Boss's personal Computer impressive when he brags to his pals. Alternately, one person can use this for Video Editing, Maya, or solving very complex equations (Oil and Gas), etc. . Having the Memory available means that you do not have to go to SLOW Disk (even SSD) for Programs or Data, everything is about as quick as it can be. Either a dozen people would be sharing this Computer (that is partly what makes it a LOW price) _OR_ just ONE person would be working this Computer harder than your average dozen people would do -- otherwise you could purchase a lower cost Computer with far fewer Cores (and less Memory _capability_, which you are not obligated to fill with the largest and most expensive Chips available) and save a LOT of money. Looking at this Computer is like trying to find the best Rocket to take the kids to School in. Do you want to get things done _that_ fast and for a lot of money or would you settle for less power at a lower cost. While the price of this starts at $2K it quickly goes up past $16K once you start filling it with faster Processors, new (GTX 980) Graphics Cards, more HDs and possibly 512 GB of LR RAM, for an ADDITIONAL $18K. Fully configured you could pay over $50K for this Computer. For _that_ kind of money you might want 512 GB of RAM. However it miss out a warning label to state not to plug-in high current load at the front power-switch USB panel! Used the front panel USB port to power a fan to cool my exterior during computation and it blew the front console up! :|
this computer probably so powerfull, it could probably power every modern application ever made at the same time, and still have space enuff for a hackintosh to run as well,...... impress Hp
Finicky machine, it refused to boot (or even go into F10 setup) when I added in an LSI SAS 9201-16e controller (SAS2116 Fusion-MPT [Meteor] (rev 02)). To get the card to work, I had to take the controller card out again (because the machine wouldn't even obey the F10 to go into the BIOS while the controller card was installed) and change the BIOS setting under "Security" -> "Device Security" -> "SAS Controller" -> use right-arrow to change if from "Device available" to "Device hidden" and after that the LSI SAS 9201-16e controller card worked fine. What a strange place to hide the setting: under "Security" for goodness sakes?! Of course setting the on-board SAS controller to "Device hidden" disables all eight of the SAS/SATA ports along the bottom row of the motherboard, which is where the four hard drive bays in the Z820 are connected. To be able to install Debian on a drive inside the machine, I ended up disconnecting one of the cables from the AHCI port on the motherboard (the one that runs to the lower DVD) and moving the SATA connector of the lowest hard drive bay there instead. So now the lowest hard drive is running using the 6Gb/s AHCI socket on the motherboard instead of the SAS controller, but at least I can finally use the good-old LSI SAS 9201-16e controller (which by the way works flawlessly in a Z420, so this mess with the Z820 was quite a surprise). Nowadays these machines are going for around $250 with dual CPU (you need both CPUs if you want all the PCI Express slots to work). Update: turned out the firmware of the onboard SAS controller needed to be updated, after that things worked normally with the 9201-16e installed.

Does anyone know part number info about the CPU cooling units?

Please what specs comes with the starting price you mentioned?
highest end config is over $70,000K.... ha! that is insane!
nearly as insane as having 500gb or RAM

I too find the internal 5.25" drive caddies to be somewhat flimsy. I know that I am going to crack one of them at some point. Thank you for sharing.
Why is there no SLI bridge on the Quadros?

We have 7 of these at work very impressive machines
Please can the system use gtx 1070 ti and how because of the pin 2*6?
I want to buy one so I did some reasearch
yes you can use that card just buy cable adapter from ebay or any store
What? Looks like CNETs got a new great reviewer. =)
Shut´up and take my money.. Well, if I had some.
That's the max RAM configuration. We have hundreds of the Z800's where I work, which are almost identical to these Z820's.
Dear, can I use 3 Graphics card (GTX 1080 ti) on HP Z820 system ?
How much for that sample unit ? Base price start from $2200 , but the one in the video is fully loaded. Quadro sli? Jeez that's a beast .
Why In the Bill Gates should ANYONE NEED 512 GB of RAM???
To make video editting super fast. Also to make DreamWorks movies in BlueRay LOL that should give an idea.

Wouldn't run any different than it does on my iMac. Maxed out, 60fps...
512GB RAM ???? HOW
512gb ram ???? when this video came out i was using 512mb of ram
Even my computer can support 24TB of storage.6 4TB hard drives.

yes but its more suited for 3d rendering and graphic design

3D Rendering, ofcourse. (for engineers)
i built a comp, fully loaded, for 70k.
