  • Hey Guys, Migs Here! In today’s video, I am tuning the half scale NASCAR on its new set up! This go kart has a 750cc engine in it that was swapped out of a 1980 Honda CB750c. I get it running as good as possible with the new dual 34mm Mikuni carburetor set up and take it for a test drive! Thanks for Watching! Your going to need to keep those carbs from hanging just on the pvc manifolds. We added zip ties to help support the carbs. If you over tighten the clamps on the pvc it will cause the pvc to shrink causing a leak. Oh yea mufflers are a must to help with the tuning. Good luck

    On my motorcycle, as I brake to stop, I simultaneously have to squeeze the clutch or it will stall. It wont keep idling if you leave it in gear and stop. As you start to slow down to a stop, you need to squeeze the clutch all the way to take it out of gear so it wont stall the engine... If you are simply rolling/no accelerating, say at 20 MPH, you don't have to squeeze the clutch but then as you slow even further, you'll need to switch to a lower gear or squeeze the clutch and hold it as not to stall.. GREAT JOB!

    These engines are setup to run with very particular intake and exhaust designs. Everything is flow matched together. Cams, head design, ignition timing and everything are carefully balanced. Winging it is tough. Check your plugs. They will tell you a lot about how it is running. Fouling, carbon build up, overcooked, etc. May need to open or close the gaps a bit to compensate for airflow differences.

Also the chain tentioner goes on the slack side of the chain (the bottom). Ask your shop teacher about it. Do these things and your ready to rock and roll!

    I'm at the beginning of the video and if your still having trouble with the pump for the fuel, if you were to raise the fuel tank where it sits higher. Preferable above the motor then it can just be gravity fed and wouldn't even need any fuel pump at all. But I do like how it's set up, or even just for testing purpose only you can un-bolt the fuel tank and just hold it where it's above the carb level and just have a new hose (straight hose) without anything on it. Just from the tank to carbs.
    Then you can tell if it is a fuel pump issue (not getting enough fuel) or if the float in the carbs is sticking) or whatever it could be. But that's a good way to do the process of elimination to find out what it is for sure.

    One thing that could lead to not so much a problem but could lead to tuning/inconsistency issues is that your carbs are both directly inline with the 2 inner cylinders while the two outside cylinders basically have 2 90 degree bends to pull air/fuel through where the 2 inner cylinders have a short straight pull from the carb and could be taking most of the air/fuel mix. If it were me I'd try to center each carb between the 2 cylinders and Put a Y in to make each intake runner equal giving each cylinder the same air/fuel intake. Just a suggestion if you run into any hiccups it's something you can look at. The rest of the cart looks sick I like the full cage chassis it looks nice and solid.

    One) Isaac of it'll be fine is reaching your way- reach back; he and John just learned a bucket about the Honda CB 750 engine, and are running the same PVC manifold you are- the short legs are minimizing the flow difference between the inside cylinders and the outside; a bigger performance would result form a "balanced design"- later, Two) the tuned exhaust would be very helpful, particularly on a two stroke engine- the CB 750 is a four stroke engine; as long as all the cylinders have equal length and bends, out to about 30" length you should be on solid ground- go to a "bricks and sticks" MC performance store and measure several CB750 header designs- the pipe length from the engine to the larger collector point is what you are going for; four stroke motors are not nearly as fussy about short pipes; if noise is a problem, get some tips for an older air cooled VW; JC Whitney of Chicago used to mail order these, Three) You are on point re the very stable, stiff clutch cable system and you are dead on about brakes, Four) I am not sure, but the motor may well be moving when in gear- more solid, and more of engine mounting may be necessary, Five) The comments about the chain tensioner being on the wrong side are right- it should be on the slack side of the chain and not on the load side.
    Don't sweat it- for a "self taught" mechanic, with a strong jones to make it quick, you are doing great- several of my early projects (in the late '50s) were much less safe, and had much 'teething" before I could get to the "fast, faster, fastest" part. You will get there! And we will all be eating popcorn. watching!FR

    Some advice,
    Get rid of those pvc intake pipes. That configuration is starving the two outer cylinders. The intake needs to be split evenly like a "Y" to run just two carbs. Or you can go back to four carbs.
    You should also finish the exhaust and mufflers, it will affect how it runs.
    If you have to choke it to get it to run, it's not getting enough fuel.
    Get it professionally tuned before you burn a piston from being too lean or you wash down the cylinders from it being too rich. Either scenario will ruin the engine.

    Carsandcameras has a similar 750cc setup and similar issues and they turned out doing the same carburetor swap you have. They had all sorts of issues but finally fixed it. They replaced the coil, wires, and plugs, but also put on a full exhaust and now it runs great. You might send them message to see what they think. They might be able to tell you how to tune the carburetors better. I think lean runs hotter exhaust, so exhaust temps might help you balance them. Put a real exhaust and muffle on it though. All you are doing is pissing off your neighbors running straight pipes.

    Looks to me like the center two carburetors would be pulling most of the fuel, as its a straight line to them, and the outside carburetors have to go around a 90° bend. When you give it gas there is more suction so they level out. JMO. You need more of a Y from the intake to the carburetor.

    • @supertedogpriken
      @supertedogpriken Před 4 lety

      that might be true if all carbs was sucking at the same time. But all cylinders have different fireing order. if the heads where off you could see that all the pistons dont move identicle. So if one cylinder is sucking in fuel, the other has the valves closed. Dont now if that is the case on this engine(that migs paird up the right 2 cylinders) but if done right that bend should not be much of a problem.

    The chain tensioner on the motor needs to be on the bottom. The top of the chain gets tighter when you are driving and it makes slack on the bottom. Put the tensioner on the bottom with a spring and you won't have no more problems. And fix the intakes. If you want to use PVC you have to have 4 tees and have the carbs on the ends. if not get two more carbs and dumb them down a little.

    Valves, bigger tank, fix motor mounts and put your chain tensioner on the bottom. A better exhasut might help also

    You’re chain tensioner is going to bend and break like that. Put it on the bottom of the chain so when you hit the gas it’s not putting force on it. I build stuff like this all the time so from one maker to another there is some good advice

    Can you take some of the slop out of the chain with a half link?

  • @adamkeller9387
    @adamkeller9387 Před 4 lety

    You put the chain tensioner on the bottom because the force and direction the chain is moving wants to straighten out on the top half of the chain and the bottom half gets all the slack you would do it for both chains good work man just trying to help a bit have fun and keep building

    When your pulling out the motor is lifting up .You should stiffing it up more that might have something to do with the chain popping

    did you sync the carbs?

  • @nathannettles7584

    You should put the tensioner on the bottom of the chain because that’s where the slack is the top of the chain pulls tight when there is a load on it

    It's your inlet manifold on each carb you've got a short and long inlet try and make them the same length

    Hey you gotta fix that engine mount. The engine moves a lot when you put it in gear

  • @jonnymakeschemicals2714

    i noticed that every time you engage the clutch to move the whole engine rocks like the mounts broke

    You gotta get yourself some carb tuning equipment buddy. It will help you more than you can imagine. Especially with multiple carburetor set ups. You have to be able to know your mixtures in order to achieve maximum efficiency. A 1 or 3 bar wide band set up would be a inexpensive and accurate way to go. I run AEM in all my stuff they make an excellent wide band. Then your only issue is synching the carbs. It could be difficult with an older engine because youre dealing with wear and tear but honestly that thing sounds pretty stout i doubt youve lost too much compression. Remember, you should never tune a carburator at idle by ear, unless you have 20 years of experience and really really know your shit all youre doing is basically walking around in circles. This is the first video ive seen from you and im impressed, you remind me of myself at your age. An aspiring mechanic/fabricator need only worry about one thing, tools. If its a tool you constantly use (1/4 drive sockets, ratchet wrenches) spend the money and get snap on or mac or matco. If its something you dont use very often, harbor freight specials are just fine. Build your arsenal bud, ive never typed up a resume in my life, my tools are my resume. Every single good mechanic i know is the same exact way. Keep it up man, you have a really good future if you continue to listen and keep the mentality of a noob. Meaning never ever assume, always, ALWAYS confirm for a fact whatever procedure or specification youre dealing with. Then youll never blow up a $25,000 engine on the dyno because you thought you knew.
