  • How To Mount or Unmount Rubber Stamps
    There are many reasons you may want to mount or unmount rubber stamps. You may want to unmount a stamp to save space, so you can use it with an acrylic block or because it does not stamp well attached to it's wooden block. I will show you how to unmount wooded stamps.
    It is economical to but unmounted rubber stamps, you can save 50% or more this way. I will show you how to make these into cling mount stamps to use with acrylic blocks or how to mount them to wooden blocks. I have my hubby cut and sand scrap wood for me to use for this purpose.
    For unmounting you will need: Heat tool, hair dryer or microwave. You may also want some vinyl, cling film or Aleens Tack it over and over glue to prepare these for use with acrylic blocks (if the foam tears or is not sticky enough to sticky to a block when you remove it)
    To mount your bare rubber stamps you will need:
    Fun foam, wood blocks and rubber cement (or you can do what I did and run your fun foam through a xyron machine!)
    If you do not want to mount your stamps to wood you will need cling foam or Aleens tack it over and over glue to make the rubber cling-able for use with acrylic blocks. If you need more instruction and options for making cling mount stamps please watch these quick videos: • stamp mounting tips/in...

    After watching your tutorial, I unmounted a wood stamp with the heat of a hairdryer.
    I am looking forward to using it, (& all my wood stamps), on an acrylic block.
    It's so much easier for people who have arthritic hands/fingers.
    Thanks for sharing this video.

    What a great idea! I've never thought of mounting my own stamps...or removing and trimming old ones~ Funny thing, I subbed at the high school Industrial Arts class last week, and had a student cut me some blocks from scrap lumber, with NO IDEA why I wanted the (sanded!!) blocks...now I do! Talk about timely!! Thanks!

    Yesyesyesyesyes❤❤❤❤❤ as a Stamper for 20 years thank you for putting on video exactly the steps I do to mount my rubber stamps. I see a trend back to wood mounts or foam mounts. I’ve been finding myself mounting my clear stamps to wood or foam so I can see exactly the stamp I want especially for sentiments and often used stamps. I can tell you this way I use my stamps 100% more than if they were filed away in a binder. I see a movement swinging back to Wood mounts yay🎉🎉🎉🎉

    Hi Lindsay, I unmounted almost all of my stamp collection with the exception of my PSX,House Mouse,and Penny Black stamps. There were a few hundred and after the first 20 or so and toasty fingers, I stopped using the heat gun and started using the microwave 6 or 7 at a time for 15 seconds, most came off quite easily. Those that didn't it was usually that the foam wouldn't come off the rubber but come off the wood. Instead of fighting a losing battle I just put those on recycled acetate from packaging, since the glue was still active they stuck on quite well and then I just trimmed the plastic. So they are mounted but don't take up as much room as the wood. I'm not a fan of EZ mount (too sticky for me, drove me crazy when cutting it) so decided to leave my rubber bare. I just bought a few packs of Tack'n Peel and put it on my acrylic mounts and it works great. I do however have some stamps that won't stamp clearly now and I think they need some cushioning so I'm sooooo grateful for the fun foam idea, I will be doing that tonight.Thanks so much for all that you share.

    Excellent video Lindsay!! I recently unmounted all of my wood block stamps due to a lack of space in my small home office. I used the Tim Holtz scissors to cut through the EZ Mount cling foam for some of the rectangular stamps. It was a sticky mess, but the scissors cleaned up easily with a tiny amount of 'Goo Gone'. Then I purchased a hot knife from Michael's with a coupon to trim the rest of the stamps after I attached the EZ Mount Cling foam. It cut the foam like butter, but it was a little scary because the knife gets so hot. I also tried another method. I carefully removed the stamps from the wood blocks (keeping the cling foam intact). I put a layer of Tomboy mono liquid glue on the original cling foam. The stamps mounted to the acrylic block, but the glue left a small amount of residue on my clear storage sheets.

    I have both a pair of KAI scissors AND the Tim Holtz Tonic scissors, and by far the Tim Holtz scissors work way waaaay better for mounting stamps, especially with EZ mount. The TH scissors are non-stick, and are easier to clean off. Cutting with the KAI brand through the sticky on EZ mount can be an irritating, messy experience!! Thanks for the great video!

      Teresa Schwartz hmm, if you tryed to peel them off would the release? You might need to get a solvent for the glue like acetone nail polish remover. just wash the rubber well when you are done so the stamp is not damaged.

I have fun foam that I can use, rubber cement, aleene's tack it over and over and a heat tool. I guess the only thing I would need to get would be the Tim Holtz scissors later. How would you put the 'indexing' onto a rubber stamp (turned cling) you are using with acrylic blocks? I want to be able to 'see' what I am stamping through the block. I like the fun foam idea and will probably use it to give my unmounted stamps, cushion when the old foam doesn't work.

    My fav trick with stamps, ESP if I get cheap stamps from Ali Express, is to sand the stamps lightly and that gets rid of the coating from the manufacturer and makes a nice clear stamp! I didnt know this and was really upset when I ordered a handful of stamps from ALi Express and they wouldnt stamp clear. I remembered reading somewhere to lightly sand the stamps and they will stamp super clear...so I tried it and sure enough, clear as day! Ali Express has SO many awesome stamps for under $5 and knowing this trick has opened up a world of stamping lol!

    Thanks for sharing this, Ms Lindsay! I'm wondering what you used when you ran the Fun Foam through the Xyron to make it double-sided? Also, can stamps mounted on the Fun Foam be used on acrylic blocks or would they be too sticky?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  Před 9 lety

      Cindy Marlow They might be too sticky for the acrylic blocks...maybe not, I think they would though. I used a xyron Creatopia, I won it and hated it so I made a bunch of double sided foam sheets to use up the adhesive (which was way to expensive to consider keeping the machine and replacing) and that is what I used. I gave the machine away.

    Awesome tutorial! I love that you show what to do in several different cases depending on whether you want the stamp to be cling or wood mount. My question is I have bought some foam stamp from hero arts, and they are gorgeous, but the plastic that is on the back is not sticky at all. I think it's supposed to stay on the acrylic block with suction, but it doesn't work. The plastic even exceeds the sides of the stamp quite a bit. Show I just spray some adhesive to the back of them? Also, I have many foam red rubber stamps that are losing their stickiness, and washing them doesn't work. How can I make them sticky again for my clear blocks? Thank you so much!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  Před 9 lety

      MrsKCreations they have a protective plastic sheet on the cling to keep the stamp clean, it is kind of like on overhear transparency, maybe a bit ticker and larger than the stamp, you peel that off and it should stick. It should come of easily, if not I don't know what is wrong. The grey cling foam should feel soft and it will static to the clear blocks.

      I dont add the foam but I stamp on a somewhat squishy surface like an old magazine of sheet of craft foam under my paper and I get great results!

    Does thin vs thick matter when using the crafters companion mounting foam? They sell both kinds so i was curious.

  • @Crazy4Crafting50

    Would tacky glue work to mount it to the block? Or a tape runner? Also,would the foam that comes with the CD case dollar store sets work as the foam? Or is that too thick?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  Před 6 lety

      I have used a glue stick to temporarily mount stamps but you have to wash the stamp and block after. The Aleens tack it over and over is the most affordable. If you stamp over foam you don't need to add it to your stamp saving space and money.

    I had a lot of acrylic sheets cut kinda like Tim Holtz's and I wanted to ask if I can store the stamps on each one. Most people store in folders or else where. I just want to leave them on the acrylic. I don't see many people doing that so I wondered if it was ok for the stamps.

    QUESTION: What scissors do you recommend for cutting the rubber stamps? Brand? 7" or 5"? Teflon or not? Serrated or not? Tim Holtz has some on Amazon. I have some arthritis in my hands, but I want to unmount stamps, ect. Thank you in advance. :-)

    Do you think the Aleens tack it over and over glue would work on fun foam ? and then can be used with acrylic block ?

    • @thefrugalcrafter

      I tried that, it works ok but the glue sometimes likes to come off the foam and stick to the block or your storage LOL!

    I have a related question. Is is safe to mount your mounted cling stamps on acetate for storage? Some of my cling stamps have come on acetate, and I'm putting my stamps in pocket sheets of various sizes in an 8.5 by 11" binder... I just read something by EZ Mount that says you should not use acetate. But the SU cling stamps come in a plastic case that would be a similar type material. The only other option I can think of would be those expensive laminated sheets by various companies like Crafter's Companion who also make the EZ Mount sheets... I just don't want to have a problem down the line, my stamps are a huge investment and something I love to use... What do you think? EZ Mount says a compound can form if you use acetate and the stamps will stick to these.
    I have found that in the past when I put mounted stamps in a plastic pocket, the cling side would really stick to the pocket. So I need to mount them to something. What I've been doing this week is adhering the cling stamps to acetate and have glued the company info to the acetate on one side and the stamp on the other, then put a plain piece of white paper between the stamp and the pocket to keep the plastic away from the rubber stamp. So it's the company info glued to the acetate on one side (with double-sided tape), then mounted the cling rubber stamp to the acetate and then a piece of white paper inside a plastic pocket. I've used ones with a tab and cut small pieces of velcro to keep them securely inside. I'm almost finished doing all of my stamps and JUST read this information, yikes!!! I still have my Heartfelt Creations cling rubber stamps to do, what do you think?
    I'm trying to do this in a secure way but as reasonably priced as possible, and I've changed the way I've organized, now doing it by subject--sentiments, christmas, flowers, faith-based stamps, etc and it's taken quite awhile to do, and I'd hate to have to re-do all of the cling rubber, but if they are not safe, then it's what I have to do...
    Sorry for this long note. I've recently subscribed to your channel, love watching you, and one of my good friends absolutely loves your channel and she paints right along with you. Thank you for sharing your great ideas, and I love that you buy quality and get what will be best long-term, I totally agree in being frugal, which doesn't mean cheap but means being careful to buy at the best price but to also invest in good materials. Thanks again,
    Joanne

      I found this thread on Splitcoast stampers which agrees with the no acetate rule: www.splitcoaststampers.com/forums/tool-product-talk-f128/acetate-stamp-storage-t607799.html I don't think that anything you bought from stampin up would have an issue. Not all clear plastic film is acetete, that is a specific plastic. Polypropylene should be fine as it is acid free and archival and is what the page protectors I use is made from. Probably most stamp companies are selling on polypropylene sheets too. If there is an issue with long term storage in the package it should say. I have laminated cardstock and file folders with contact paper and heat laminator pouches for stamp storage but honestly I usually just slide my stamps in a page protector in a binder and call it a day;)

    Hi, I just took about 15 rubber stamps off of wood blocks and want to use them with acrylic blocks. I do not have access to the foam that you are talking about , I am in Canada, does this sound like i would work. Attach think kid's foam to the rubber stamp, then attach window cling (the kind that you use to put on your window and can take it on and off due to the cling) using double sided think tape?

      +Deborah Anne if you can get a repositional glue and put it on the back of the rubber and let dry it works well and you won't need foam. Stamp on a foam sheet and you will be fine.

    I have a couple of boxes of unmounted stamps from Lost Coast Designs (and other companies) that I would like to index with the image. I tend not to use (ever!🤣) my stamps that I can’t see what the stamped image looks like. I have tried stamping on clear vinyl tablecloth but the vinyl tablecloth doesn’t cling well to the stamp block or stamping platform tool. Any ideas? Think using the cling vinyl and indexing and painting the back with Tack it Over & Over would work? Ty!

    I made a whole bunch of stamps, mostly 4x6. I mounted them on wood block. I didn't know you should put foam between the stamp and the wood. Does it make much of a difference? Having it come out the best it can is really important to me and I will redo them if you recommend it. Thanks!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  Před 9 lety

      Mary Montoya the foam helps cushion it but you can also stamp on a piece of fun foam (under your paper) for the same effect, just try not to get ink on the block which might smear.

    Hi! Great video! Why are stamps mounted using adhesive foam?? I don't like the wobbly feeling of stamping with foam between the wood and rubber. Is it just a more convenient form of double sided adhesive? Or am I doing something wrong?

      Generally companies approach me ask ask if I would like to be on a design team or if I would design products for them. They usually want artists who have a large social media presence so they can advertise their products. If you are designing products they might not care about reach. You can always email a company and inquire about work. Good luck:)

      You can pop a stamp in the microwave for a few seconds and it should peel off.
