    I'm one year out from full thickness tears of the supra/Infraspinatus, partial of the subscapularis tendon, labrum tear and sublux of bicep. There is light at the end of the tunnel!! I'm up to 35lb dumbells, have full range of motion (including behind my back). I had to wait a long time before rehab since there was so much damage. Do the PT as often as you can, even at home. IT WORKS!! Good luck with yoour re-hab!!

      I couldn’t agree more. Tomorrow will be two weeks since I had my surgery and yesterday I thought to myself that they basically gave me a few pages of discharge instructions and then I was on my own. I’ve had two physical therapy appointments and all they did was talk to me and give me printouts with exercises on them that I’m supposed to do at home. I literally feel like I am just flailing on my own. It’s been pretty discouraging.

    I really appreciate your videos. I'm on my third to fourth week out from my supraspinatus repair. I barely feel any pain, I feel a pinch here and there on my injury site, but I do have muscle pain in my arm. I'm about to start pt next week. My doctor told me to remove the sling for a bit 4 times a day and this is the worst thing. I have no range of motion besides flexing my elbow and it's so weird because I have 0 strenght on anything above my forearm. I feel so vulnerable without it and this feeling of having an useless arm is so depressing.

    • @clu801
      @clu801  Před 3 lety +2

      @lolz, Thanks for letting me know the vids help! First I will say I am sorry. You are right in the worst part of recovery. That 3rd week was so depressing! Keep your head up.. its going to start getting better quick. In this video... I remember how surprised I was at the amount of improvement that happened in 1-2 weeks. There really is no strength like you said. That will take time and patience.. but at least those muscle pains will start to go away and you will begin to get your range of motion back more and more with every visit to PT. I was so scared of PT... but after a few visits I began to look forward to it. I knew it was helping tons. Reading your message reminds me of how long those first weeks took. It seemed to go on forever.. I hated the sling.. but was scared without it. It is depressing, that is no joke. Just hang in there because it really does start to go by much faster and gets a lot easier. Good Luck and if you have any other questions please let me know. Even if it is just to complain and vent about how sucky this surgery is.

      @@clu801 Thank you so much. You have no idea how you helped me. Since I torn my supraspinatus I already knew that I was going to need surgery. It took 2 months to get my surgery done because of this year...everything is slower than usual, so it took me 10 days to do the MRI, plus 10 days to get the results, a week going to several shoulder specialists and 30 days waiting for my health insurance approval and the material, anchors etc. I've been watching videos about shoulder arthroscopy and recovery every day and your videos are so precise in everything I'm going through rn. I was really feeling bad this week, and after watching your videos, and getting your answer here, it gave me so much hope that I will recover. Thank you so much. The first week it was really annoying because of the pain, the second week it gets way better and you get high hopes of a very fast recovery and the third week you feel so impotent because I'm starting to finally get rid of this sling and when I'm off, I feel like my arm is just a piece of meat hanging. But now I have high hopes. I know the PT will hurt, but I was scared of taking too long to recover some range of motion, but now I feel way more confident, thanks to you.

    Hello - thanks again for these videos. These really help so I appreciate you posting them, as its good to understand what I am in for! I am 2 weeks post op for a full thickness tear of the supraspinatus. It wasn't picked up on the MRI, and so I was only expecting to have a bone spur removed when I went in for surgery, and so wasn't prepared for the lengthy recovery. Similar to a question I posted on another video, I am really interested in the time frames for returning to work to an office job. How long did this take you and do you think is wise to start going back early in the recovery process? Thanks again for the really helpful content and I'm glad to see from your other videos that you've made a good recovery!

    • @clu801
      @clu801  Před 2 lety

      Sophie, I went back to work after 2 weeks. But I just work on the computer all day. So doing physical stuff depending on your office work could be difficult. Using the muscles before you are told to do so by your PT is risky. In my case.. I just laid my arm on the desk and clicked mouse buttons ;) To be safe.. I would ask your PT or Dr for your specific case when its ok to be working again.. Good luck, I hope it goes well :)

    Hey, thanks for these videos! Hope you are better now. I am still so confused, because everyone kept saying, including my surgeon that I should not feel pain during my PT sessions, BUT my PT sessions hurt like hell, because my range of motion has been compromised obviously by protecting my rotator cuff and wearing the sling for weeks. So, when we do the exercises, obviously a lot of muscles around my shoulder and arm are stiff as hell and they hurt like hell to stretch them out. I was wondering if your PT also mentioned that you have to go through pain NOT in the surgical area, but around it to loosen up those muscles again. Thanks!

    • @clu801
      @clu801  Před 9 dny +1

      Hello! Thank you for the kind words and yes, I am doing GREAT thanks for asking. That is funny that people told you it wouldn't be painful during PT. I had experienced the complete opposite. In fact, the first time I went to PT they asked me what I was there for, what was my injury? I told them a rotator cuff and heard gasps from everyone within earshot. Then the nice lady at the desk informed me that it's the worst recovery in PT that anybody can go through. So yes, to answer your question, I was very much in pain during PT while they were trying to increase my range of motion breaking the muscles loose again was painful. Yeah, but with that in mind, you have to stick with it because PT is very important to a good recovery. I wish you the best luck on your recovery. God bless!

    •  Před 8 dny

      @@clu801 i really appreciate you taking the time to reply, thank you very much! It's quite reassuring to hear your experience as well, that there is indeed a lot of pain involved. I’m digging my ice machine shoulder set up. You mentioned that you prefer packs over the machine. Could you tell me why? Is it a convenience thing? I do admit that it’s a bit clumsy, but I like that it’s staying consistently cold for a longer duration. Anyways I figured I’d get your input on ice pans versus ice machine in case I’m missing out on something

    • @clu801
      @clu801  Před 2 lety +1

      For sure more convenient. I have a hard time sitting still.. so having 2 packs and rotating them just worked out better for me. Also I felt like I could get it right where it needed to be better with the ice packs. And I liked to fall asleep with the icepack at night.. but I do think the machine is great as well. was just not my preference.

    My doctor recommended I wait eight weeks for therapy because of the full tear of my rotator cuff but by the fifth week I stopped wearing my brace regularly and with zero therapy regained a lot of motion in my shoulder and arm . In my sixth week now,
    the the only thing I can’t do is reach straight above my head. I had been doing testosterone replacement therapy for two years and I was also taking Sermorelin, I believe that helped accelerate my recovery.

      Russ, Here comes the answer and a bit of advice. I have a Bidet. I have had it for years and honestly can't imagine not having it. So with this surgery I was very thankful for it. I am also right handed. Used my left to 'dry' which is all you need to do with a Bidet. I am pretty good at doing lots of stuff left handed.. I am a bit ambidextrous that way but some things were still awkward. Brushing my teeth was the hardest. Advice: Get a bidet if you don't have one and thank me later ;) You can get one that attaches to the seat and they are under $40.

    I'm two years and three months into a horrible shoulder injury. All three surgical procedures have failed. I'm having a complete reverse shoulder replacement in three weeks. It's the last option we have left. Hopefully this works, I'd like my life back. I'd like to be able to return back to work. I'd like to know what it's like to not be in pain.

      Ken, Yes.. I had all kinds of little things going on that freaked me out. The one you describe I thought felt like the nerves 'healing' or something. Just be careful.. rub those spots lightly with your other hand and if they continue tell your Dr. I feel for you.. I remember being so paranoid that every little thing/twitch meant 'failed surgery'. You can get through this! Be careful but keep a positive attitude! Good luck Ken!

      I went through a roller coaster of stiffness and soreness. At one point I was prescribed some heave duty anti-inflammatory meds because I stopped taking Ibuprophen which turned out to be a mistake. Inflammation is what was causing my stiffness, it was also preventing my PT so he requested the meds. The stiffness will go away.. but you should talk to your Dr. and PT and make sure all is good. Ask them questions anytime, after all.. you paid/are paying them and I am sure they want you to recover! Good luck on the rest of your recovery!

    Hi I underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery 10 days ago to repair a small full thickness tear of my supraspinatus. My pain wasn’t too bad the first few days after surgery The doctor had me start passive physical therapy 3 days later. Yesterday after some passive exercises my shoulder started hurting more. I’m kind of nervous about the repair. Did you have sudden increases in pain in your first few weeks? Thanks

    • @clu801
      @clu801  Před 3 lety

      David, for sure I had increase. I was constantly worried about it being reinjured. I am pretty sure that most the pain I felt was just muscle soreness around it. Those muscles are trying to compensate for any movement you're doing or not trying to do. Also I had a very hard time keeping it still. I am pretty sure yours is fine if you haven't heard a pop or felt a severe stabbing pain that comes along with the pop. For me the passive pendulum swing actually made my arm feel better a lot of the time. Good luck on the rest of your recovery I hope it goes quickly.

      @@clu801 thanks for the reply. I spoke to my surgeon this morning and he said he wasn’t worried. He said if I actually damaged the repair I’d have excruciating pain because the sutures would rip through the tendon. My tear was small on 10mm and on the anterior edge which is better than being in the middle of the tendon. I got lucky and he didn’t have to do a biceps tenodesis like he thought. Like you I’m really cautious about damaging the repair. I don’t like taking my sling off.

    Hey I just finished 5 weeks this past Friday October 30th. I was just wrapping up at school and took my sling off and was moving something very light to the podium when it's slept in my right arm went to grab it and I felt a sharp pain in my incision area in the front. Ever since then it's been a burning sensation and I've been on sling Saturday Sunday. I hope I haven't damaged. I am seeing my doctor on Tuesday. My hunch is that I'm probably okay but I made need to be in Sling a little longer. What do you think? Or if you had any setbacks. Thanks

    • @clu801
      @clu801  Před 3 lety +1

      There was a time when I almost tripped over my dog.. I fell onto my bed toward my injured side. I quickly tucked my arm in and fell onto the shoulder area on the bed. The quick movement hurt more than the impact on the soft bed. Just like you.. I was freaked out. I saw my Dr. like 2 days later and explained what took place. I had the burning feeling as well.. I don't recall how long it lasted. He assured me that I most likely didn't injure it since I tucked in the arm. He said most injuries occur when people grab onto something with the injured arm as they are falling. I mentioned the quick motion being the source of my pain.. He said while this could injure it.. it wasn't very likely. I don't know if this story makes you feel better or not. Obviously I never injured it, and yours could be totally different. But I think you will see your doctor and I bet your hunch is correct. I will cross my fingers for you!

    • @clu801
      @clu801  Před 2 lety

      Kaccha, first thing... the tear will never heal on its own :( sorry bro. With that said.. Lots of people still go without surgery by building up the muscles around the injury.. but if you are needing overhead strength to be 100%, then you will probably want to get it repaired. When I was in PT there were a few people in there trying to get back 'close to normal' with partial tear/no surgery. If there is pain now.. and its not slowly subsiding and your range/strength isn't slowly improving.. that is another sign you should repair it IMO. From what I saw partial tears recover faster than full tears (tissue to tissue vs. tissue to bone) For my full tear.. it was almost a full year before I was even 95%. Now its way stronger than my other shoulder (which is now giving me issues) So.. with all that information.. you have a tough decision to make. I wish I had better info for you man.. Good luck!

    Your videos are very informative! I am at the 5 week mark, but still in the sling. My next doctor visit is on July 22 where I believe will be the day the sling comes off. It’s great to see that yours came off at week 5, since typically they say 6 weeks. I have been going to therapy since day 2 post surgery doing all passive exercises. This week I started doing chest presses with the plastic pvc pipe. It’s crazy how tight and achy my shoulder is. Did you feel the same at this mark? I always get concerned about tearing it again with how achy and tight it feels when doing the exercises. Were you also immediately able to drive after the sling came off and did you drive back to work at this time too? Thank you in advance for taking time out to answer my questions.

At 5 weeks my shoulder was very tight and I, like you, was super paranoid about re-injury. The tightness and soreness is totally normal. Easy for me to say, but I know you will still be worried. It's part of the recovery ;) I did drive right after the sling came off. It wasn't too bad. Just have to be mindful of everything going on. Keep your spirits up! that is the best thing I can offer.
