THANK YOU!!! This made my job much quicker and easier. I had to cut off a 50 yr old cast iron flange in a concrete floor. I was unsure about the best way to cut off the old flange.
thanks for showing the truth ,the aches and the pain that come along with doing this type of work
the pain....lol
Thank you for the video. I'm running into a lot of I.D. swollen cast iron pipes trying to get a 3in set-in pvc flange into. Never thought of using a chisel/ screwdriver 😊
Thanks! Now I'm afraid of what I might be in for - but your video has helped immensely! Nice work!
awesome steve..good luck
Great Video! If you do those often, they make a heavy duty cup shaped wire wheel, with twisted stainless wires, for an angle grinder, that would make quick work of cleaning that rust, instead of using a chisel. Most welding supply shops carry them.
Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for the upload. I was getting ready to do this exact same thing the wrong way. This is a huge help!
cool.....glad it helped....
From one Master Plumber to another, may I suggest using a high speed drill and a "round wire wheel brush" on the end to clean out the inside of that cast iron. I got tired years ago using a hammer and chisel to clean out the rust. I enjoy your video's, and love watching what my peers do, to see how they tackle industry problems.
thanks for tip....makes sense....where ya from plumber?
I'm right next door to ya...Philly suburbs!
And a little silicone spray helps too, around the rubber gasket and inside the top area of the pipe, helps it slip in easier.
Also I would suggest a level on the flange
Nice job, thanks for video I'm learning about these new flanges.
Great video! Thanks, I have 3 to repair so I can now do it properly. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us.👌
get er done John
3rd video in a row that Ive watched where they used this plastic flange. the pro plumbers said in the comments not to use it bc the 3 screws inside the flange will inevitably get clogged with toilet paper
Hey Chuck, great video, I'm from the jersey shore and I'm renovating my bathroom and dealing with old cast iron plumbing, I'm cutting the pipe below and running pvc up but your vid was a good lesson.
Oh roger that.......get er done daddy
found any videos on how to do that??
someone please give this guy a level....
ole dead eye!
Safety eye wear is a nice thing to have to save your vision. I did the same flange install on a concrete floor. Great job.
Did you have a video of how you did it
@@49ers26 No!!! It was a time consuming job. I had to cut into a concrete floor to get to a level to where I can get a proper level flush cut on the cast Iron pipe. After I did that, I bought the part from Menards to do a dry fit. After that I make up a concrete batch to fill in the section I removed. I let it dry for over 24 hours to make sure it was hardened strong. After it dried, I installed the part. Reinstalled the new toilet and had no issues to date. Oatey PVC Replacement Closet Flange model # 43539. Other box stores carry it too. I like it because it has three adjustable screws inside to extend the rubber seal to completely seal off the pipe from sewer gas or other stuff. It worked great!!! Remember to clean the inside the pipe real good of everything so it doesn’t affect the sealing surface of the part.
After you ok the old flange of and needed to clean up the pipe fo rust and scale and insert the new one....yoghurt want one of those picote systems flex shaft cables that you just connect to your drill. The shaft has the chains that spin that rust and other scale right off nice and clean...
Thank You Robert....good tip
get ya the flex shaft for cleaning put on drill clean that right up less hassles they carry short 12 foot ones , save a lot of chesling
we actually carry them now....and picotes
thanks
Your welcome Nick.
Thanks for the hard work and sharing your experience. Subscribed!
Thank You.....Appreciate that.
Hey Chuck! Peter from Minnesota. Good work guys. Tell CB to take care of that knee!
Minnesota IN DA HOUSE! Oh CB2 got a case of plumbers knee. lol
The flange belongs set on top of the finished floor!
I can see your point. I like tile to flange but i here ya.
Thank you. It is unreal how flush some how became the norm.
I agree, I was thinking they should have done the floor first
I would have plugged it and installed the flanges after the floor was installed
Good plumbers can rough in properly as long as they know the trowel depth and flooring ppl are putting in
yes sir
yes sir on that one
One of the other trades will probably step on it and break it before the floor is instslled.
Lead and cast iron flanges are best
I'm taking the cast iron is still in good condition. But on a total rehab it would seem replacing the 3" with PVC would save future trouble for new home owner
Yes Cast was in nice working order.
Rather than chipping at the internal pipe so much, what about using a hole saw that has the right diameter of the pipe?
Push in pan collar20 or 40mm off-no chasing no hustle. Welcome to Australia plumbing
get er done Jack
You know what it is it’s plumbing it’s painful 😂
No pain no gain
Nice song your playing in the back ground
thank you.
Music on your vid thought I was watching scott brown carpentry channel lmao 😂
a lil beat makes the world go round
I just bought the twist in flange. I didn't see the one with allen key screws. Hopefully its not a pain to put in.
good luck
Good videos buddy ❤💛💙
Glad you like them!
Most new toilet bowls or 12in rough-in getting old fashioned 14 in if you go to 12 you're going to have a space behind the toilet tank
Great job but the help did all the work kept it mr plumber
What ya mean? CB2? or myself? Plumb On!
With the smaller i.d. of the repair flange plus the bosses for the allen screws, isn't there an increased possibility of clogs?
Its code and much larger then toilet horn. Its much smaller than 4" cast though...been a few years and no problems thus far.
14:26 I think your apprentice just tore his meniscus
shake it off son. we need ya
If you able to woulf it be best to wait till final floor is done than put in the flange
I kind of like the tile to be flush with this flange. I do get your point though. Thanks Ron.
I'd be worried about breaking the pipe
careful take your time
Chuck, great video. However, you really should have had hearing and eye protection when cutting and breaking the flange. I know too many retired masters of the trade with hearing problems.
Great point! Yes i have boned up my safety especially after hearing from you all.
The new flange should mount to finished floor
if i recall we left room for dura rock for tile to be set on.
@@ChuckBarron no.room.for mortar, though . . js
My iron flange on my toilet is absolutely destroyed. What is the name of that pvc flange that you replaced it with? That’s what I need! Beats paying the plumber $400 to replace the flange and pipe when I can just replace the flange with this! The main iron pipe doesn’t need replaced...he just wants to replace it with pvc cus it’s old. Lol
kit.com/ChuckBarron/toilet-flanges- here are some idea's.
Lol you no what it is... its plumbing, its painful lol, hey cb2 I had surgery on left knee twice and surgery on right once..... but we love plumbing... muscle through it brotha... it's worth it
lol....tell him.
Why don't you use the slotted flange holes?
Great video 👍 i have to do similar job in my bathroom reno. Is between flush and 1/2 the norm for flange depth to finish tile floor?
Where is the Allen screws in the toilet flange tightened to and what purpose do they serve.
they expand o ring inside of pipe.
@@ChuckBarron Thanks
They are illegal to use not a smooth surface. He did all that. Work to removed it should of put a 4x4 CI collar oakum lead your done and you are making the opening smaller
Good video, Chuck. Why don't you place the adjustable keyways for the flange bolts on the sides?
i actually have found out through the years that the side of adjustable flanges break or the bolt gets rocked out in time. I always use the dead on non adjustable slots. much stronger in my opinion..
Chuck Barron makes sense
What is the flange or the piece that you were putting in where did you get it at thank you
Its a repair flange. Online for sure.
Hey, great video man!! Just one question, will the flange always be separated from the pipe or will it be all one piece sometimes?
If your lucky the entire flange will come up. Thats the ideal situation. Plumb On!
This is for my friend's toilet. His wax ring was old and smashed down so we put a rubber seal ring on and the flange looked like it was in rough shape, but this has stopped the slow leak for now. He is strapped for cash right now and just wanted to know what I was up against for when/if he calls me back over thanks again man!!
Chuck why didn't you use the traditional Johnny bolt slots? Instead you used those "slots". The finished tile job might make those slots useless for the next time the "Johnny Bolts" need to be changed.
I like the slots because they are stronger.
Hey Chuck - (and congratulations on your big day btw!!!). Great job on the videos. What kind of cutting wheel do you have on the Makita grinder??
looking back It may of been diamond blade. I have since changed to ridgid blade from home depot. cuts like butter
I do not understand why you checked for square with the wall by measuring to the non-adjustable slots when you could have turned the plastic flange 90 degrees and allowed the toilet setter to make the thing square at the time the toilet is set.
I like using the slots only and not the adjustable slots on flanges. I measure to make sure they are even off wall for toilet setting purposes.
@@ChuckBarron Fair enough. I had just never seen that before so was curious. I know you have more to do than to educate me, but am now wondering if the fixed slots are stronger.
i have seen side adjustable ones break and or even the toilet bolts pop out on a real rocking situation .
Nice work here
thanks mazz
How far from the wall normally 140mm so 160 before giprock and tiles
not sure what you mean Jack.
Why not fill in the empty space around the pipe with concrete to support the flange?
Knee pads, protect the knees.
my neck, my back, my knees.....
can you keep the old flange over the pipe mine will not move.
I would say no. It will be to high. Toilet will rock.
3/8” thinset under the new tile will now bring the flange level with the floor. Not ideal.
Who edits your videos and what do you use for sound? I know it ain’t you who edits, haha. I like those flanges. We use them too.
me of course
Chuck what software do u use to edit videos I'm going to be doing plowing and im thinking of recording daily plumbing jobs u have inspired me to try it out but need to figure out how to edit them the best way I like the quality of your videos I haver a canon Gx 7 camera ???
I have mac..i use imovie.
Chuck Barron ok cool I need to figure it out to start some plumbing videos and plow videos !!!!!
get er done.....
What is it floor waste gully? So far from the wall
right on. or a 14" toilet. Cannot remember.
Is that the kind of flange that's caulked with molten lead? I'm working on one of those and I thought to use a torch to melt the lead. Much rather do it your way if it works.
PVC..they are sweet. check em out. They sold everywhere I think. kit.com/ChuckBarron/toilet-flanges
Chuck Barron » I mean the flanges you removed. The one I'm dealing with looks much the same - Rusty but probably serviceable...but then my judgement ain't worth much. If those flanges you did weren't too high would you have used them or replaced them anyhow?
yes they were cast iron with lead and oakum. They removed the old mud floor and that was the result...I opted to remove cast and install inserts
I'm reno'ing my bathroom. My flange sits almost an inch above the plywood right now. In gonna tile soon but I don't think the tile height will come close to the flange. The bigger issue is that when I cleaned off the old wax ring and removed the bolts I noticed it doesn't appear that the pipe is separate from the flange. There is no space indicating that occum was stuffed and lead was poured. It looks like a solid piece L shaped pipe. Any advice? Thanks.
Why not use a quick set flange that fits over the pipe? That’s a poo catcher!!!
many options in the flange world...Plumb on David.
He’s not a real plumber not intelligent don’t understand the code or the consequences of what he is installing.
Why you install the flange now, it should be install after the finish floor.
I always mount flange and have tile guys tile to flange. Some times we late and then we gotta chip tile for flange to fit, drill tile to mount flange.
Chuck Barron shouldn’t the flange be over finished floor tho?
What blade did you use to cut old flange?
I believe we used grinder.
Basin waste pipe and hot and cold no brass threadded fittings?what a shame!
my back and neck are happy.
Better flipping some pizzas not matter how you make it it might turn out good somehow. ''that will work''
Yes indeed.
10:25 I damn near went to go wash my face and I'm not even there......🤭🤔🤢
BSI-body substance isolation.
Any way you can share the cost of this job?
Did entire renovation here Eric. I have to look it up. We getting paid for sure.
What type of flange is this called?
repair flange.
Wearing a mask 😷 may help you to do a lot more videos for years and years to come !! 😁😁. Cmon man take care yourself
Yes. No more medal dust in the lungs. good eye....
What's a little lead
This comment aged well
CB2 on the ropes at 14:30...
Down Goes CB2......plumbers knee
Why if you go through all that wouldnt you just Lead in a new Cast Iron Flange? Why reduce the opening? And using a high speed drill bit to drill out the lead is a lot faster and you wont risk breaking the cast iron Riser.
Dave, good tip on the high speed bit.....gonna remember that one. The 4" I.d. on cast was reduced to a 3" pipe and still larger than toilet trap I.d. But I could see your concern on some other flanges. Cast Iron Flange over kill on the residential job.
Why not just put flanges on top of tile when tile is done ? Thanks
I personally like the tile up to the side of flange if possible. I have done it both ways though. We just happen to do this during the rough in
U need to watch Steve Lav he would show u😊... old school
stevie the man.
So you don't believe in using a level?
He leveled it to the floor with the board. Much more important than true level.
Takes 4 mins to put on 🧤
Get er done Lyndley! Plumb On!
Please next time don't tell us it's ply wood that means u could of cut the shot out under the house
no way.......dawg.....easier for this situation but i hears ya....the plumb life
Fun video, the young fella should be wearing eye protection while chiseling.
yes sir
You need to invest in a flex shaft! it would've took you a minute to descale the pipe!!!
What is that?
@@ChuckBarron pipeliningsupply.com/using-and-maintaining-flex-shaft/
There is a wealth of information on it here!

thanks hydro..its like gladiator tools...i will spend some time there for sure. thanks
Jesus christ buy yourself a wire wheel and put in the end of a drill is this your first day? lol To get a good seal you need to clean all that rust off. That chisel isn't doing much.
HACK FRONT OF FLANGE IS 3/8" HIGHER CAUSE NOT FLUSH TO FLOOR. HACKER PLUMBING
I think we nailed it but ok...hacker? thats funny. what would dina do?
Chuck Barron probably just complain
Cut the intro, get to the fixin'
lol...yes sir....we learning old dirty....thanks for input.
