ORLANDO, FLORIDA 32867 - Hudba
On July 1st, 1999, in Lisbon, I had the opportunity to see Morphine's last complete concert. Two days later, on stage at an Italian festival in Rome, Sandman suffered a fatal heart attack. Morphine is still one of my favorite bands ever.
That two-string bottleneck bass combined with that gorgeous baritone sax affects me like a cat's purr in a wonderfully disorienting dream. Love this band.
I'm very fortune to have seen them live. A very memorable show.
Oh man, what a dream. If there's a rock n roll heaven, I hope I make it there to see Mark play.
One of my favorite albums of all time. Just heard this on the radio yesterday, actually. Such a great sound this band created. That bending or sliding you hear is Mark Sandman's 2-string slide bass. He spent his career searching for what he called the "low sound." Not only did this band create that swanky sound, the lyrics and vocals are also filled with humor, wit, pain, intelligence, and mischief. I love this band.
“Sheila” is one of the all time great songs about a cat. The mood that this band creates is so original. If you want to go on a bender, the whole Cure for Pain album is beautiful. French Fries With Pepper, Empty Box, and Wishing Well (the last 3 songs from their album Like Swimming) are all great and really different from each other, fun to listen to in order.
This band made it to one of my discovery playlists but never graduated and was eventually removed.
Watching this soon but just have to say I'm SUPER excited for this and hope you do the whole album. A really special album.
I was gifted a CD of this band and I enjoyed it and every once in a while I’ll find it under something that’s under something else and again I enjoy it.
Morphine are AMAZING ❤
The first time I heard this song, hell, this album, it was a cure for pain.
I've been listening to these guys off and on for years and this is one of my favorite albums of theirs. But for some reason the track that always pops into my head whenever someone mentions them is "Top Floor, Bottom Buzzer."
This is mellow Morphine. Check out Honey White for something more up-tempo.
Cool band. Cool song. I’ve always liked how they kind of painted themselves into a corner by stripping things down drastically, yet still managed to write catchy and varied music.
Absolutely love em. Thanks.
One of my favortie bands, this track is amazing, my favorite on the album is I'm Free Now. Also 1st album Good (1992) and Yes (1995) are masterpieces.
Glad you got back to them. I’d forgotten you’d reacted before, was going to say you should react to them every Thursday Thursday Thursday in the afternoon 😂
Morphine, the physician's remedy, when you're blue & black. But the surefire cure is a big bassy bottom and lotsa heavy sax! Peace & Love.
Hot Smoke and Saxxafras … excellent.
Thanks. I remember you being a bit lukewarm on Thursday. Glad you liked it. If you do another track from this album definitely do “Buena “ next. This album and the next Lp , “Yes “ are my favorites .
❤ "Yes" is the song I call "my theme song"; it's what I play in my head when it's time to buckle down and do the big things, like when I was signing mortgage papers 😅
“Buena” is a really fun track too on this album which is solid all the way through. They were terrific fun live, especially in the smaller venues. Unfortunately my older brother from Boston (where the band played a lot) said it was “Sesame Street music” and that Snuffleupagus played basoon and I just couldn’t un-hear it.
Ohhhh birrrrd.
They are from Boston , Mark Sandman ,the lead singer , was in a band called Treat her right previously.
Morphine's best song that I've heard is Whisper. It's slow, slinky, and feels filthy, in a good way.
This and Like Swimming are great. Like the reaction.👍
'Ole Audiophile to JustJP: You caught me flat-footed. I had to leave Ohio & wander clear to Pittsburgh to be introduced to Morphene, it did not make the local rounds near Cleveland. I believe I own all four or that's the extent of my knowledge. What a bizarre instrument, a two string bass. Actually, I was introduced to two new acts that weekend, the other was Rusted Root. Both were spectacular. Sometimes it pays to travel...thanx. czcams.com/video/GlqMrLuicgU/video.html
I nearly skipped this one, their name sounds like a metal band; but they got a mention in a favorite movie of mine "Grosse Pointe Blank". Minnie Driver's character said this was her favorite out of a playlist. This sound was unexpected. I'm curious if they have more variety in their sound.
I hope you'll be getting back to "Drums and Wires" by XTC soon.
You might wanna check out a duo called Alien Knife Fight. Similar but later.
wow this brings back a memory or two. great suggestion.
in the twenty minutes it's taken me to write those two sentences and listen to the opening tracks off the album, it reminded me of something from the same era with a similar feel (the slide maybe, or the vocal) -- if you get the chance, check out Aussie band The Cruel Sea and their song 'Better Get A Lawyer'
I love how Morphine mixes alternative influences (here The Cure obviously), with something completely out of the blue (jazz, blues) that got nothing to do with the new wave/alternative genre. That merge is so original. I just love the happy/sad mood of the song.
Treat Her Right and Hypnosonics are additional Mark Sandman enterprises that are well worth checking out. I must have seen Treat Her Right perform 30 times, I loved that band so much. Sandman was a crewman on a crab boat and a taxi driver before finding a little success as a musician. His mother lost not only Mark, far too young, but also her other two sons, in truly tragic and bizarre circumstances. Awful.
Counting the days until 'The Prophet's Song'. Queen's longest and most astonishing track. More than 'Bo Rhap' imho!
I'm a little sad that you're not catching a live version, so you can see the awesome musicianship: the sax player plays two saxes at once, and the bass is only two strings 😮
The way I play, you only need two.
Check out Farcry by Rush if you haven’t.
I propose a toast
To my self control
You see it crawling
Helpless on the floor
I’m right there with you, Mark🫡
I love that lyric. Witty and self deprecating.
They are not horns. It is a tennor sax. And by the way the bass only has two strings. These guys are niche shall we say. Good luck with your pains. 🌟
Not heard of these before, and it was ok, but I was thinking it rather sax heavy... Then I read their blurb, and saw the line up, sax, drums, and bass. So I checked out the aforementioned 'Thursday'. Pretty much the same, and again ok. But due the lineup I can imagine their sound getting quite old, quite quickly, on me at least. Maybe the tracks with guest muso's will be better.
If they had some guitar or varied songs, would be better. listened to 5 songs on an album and all samey and dull. Not gonna hold my attention theres better bands out there.
