    ,morphine is just one of those amazing underrated bands that have fell thru the gaps, absolutely stunning band, did recommend it to you on one of your Tom Waits reviews along with Tindersticks, Gallon Drunk, Cardiacs and firewater

      Got to agree... They were very underrated and really deserved to be better known. Watching Dana play two sax's at the same time still blows my mind.

    Morphine was one of the most underrated, overlooked bands of the 90s. I think it was too dark for a lot of people. Their music is truly enchanting. I hope you guys get into them more...

    The National is basically Morphine 2. I mean this as a high compliment.

    Morphine is a unique band, their album “Cure For Pain” is a favorite from the 90s. Interesting song battle , my choice would have been to have them in a sax battle as they do have faster paced songs where the sax really takes over.
    I’ve heard of Magnetic Fields , but not familiar with their music but I did like the song. Will have to go with the home team on this one it’s Morphine for me.

    You should expect the sax :)) Morphine's sound is built around the sax

    Morphine is one of the best bands of the '90s. Definitely worth exploring their catalog.

      @@ReactionsToTheClassics When I say “best”, I don’t mean popular, I just mean they were a band that carved out their own path/sound and that other bands, like The National, emulated. What’s interesting is that it’s only a 3-piece band. Bass (2-strings only), a baritone sax, and drums. That’s it. It makes for an intensely cool soundscape. Nobody sounded like them at the time.

      Oh i totally get what you mean and interestingly The National are my fave band of this century

      @FullFathomV Před měsícem +1

      Nice! Yeah, I like The National too. And when I say “emulate” I really mean you can tell Morphine was an inspiration for them. They have their own style/tone too. Songs to check out from Morphine include: Swing It Low, Cure For Pain, Super Sex, Buena, Honey White, Candy, I’m Free Now, Radar, Gone For Good, Early To Bed, Souvenir, A Good Woman Is Hard To Find, and You Look Like Rain

    Thanks guys ...
    From the lyrical cues I would assume ' The night ' was inspired by a failed relationship ..
    One expects to hear " I can't make it on my own " when you hear the phrase
    but he instead sings ..." I CAN make it on my own "
    through-out the song . It's a nice unexpected touch !

      Great catch on that. Thanks for bringing these!

    • @Mitch_Feral
      @Mitch_Feral Před 6 měsíci +1

      I hear what you're getting at, but the lyric is 'cant' - Mark's just sunk down into the mix, and sings with such a lacquered affect, that 't' sound never shows. And contextually, 'I hope you're waitin for me, 'cause I cant make it on my own' - the ''cause' would make no sense with 'can'; if it was 'can', the proper partner would be 'but'.

    • @deepbluehue3
      @deepbluehue3 Před 6 měsíci +1

      oh ok .. ( two years later ! ) : just googled the lyrics ..
      you ARE correct ...
      all this time I thought it was odd it sounded like he was singing ' can ' ! Thanks Mitch ....@@Mitch_Feral
