Have you heard of the etnic population of Northern Norway, Northern Sweden, Northern Finland and Westhern Russia called the Sami? Their traditional way of singing is called joik. This area also have the Northern lights. I hope their performance in Tel Aviv will show more of this.
KEiiNO says that the song is about all the battles many people fight every day just to be able to be them self and who they are. It is inspiered by historical battles for equality regardless of etnicity, sex og sexuality. The joik also has a meaning to it, the sentence "Äajet dan Äuovgga" can be translated to "show me the light"

Norway were in first place for a little while but we got down to 5th place and The Netherlands won
iml 04 yes I know the Netherlands won in the end and I do love that song and all but to me Norway are the true winners I mean thereâs a reason they won the televote after all. Itâs just the shame that those awful juries have no taste even tho Iâm glad Macedonia won that vote aswell.

Its NOT a joke it's a nordic language called Sami or in Scandinavia called Joik. It's a language very popular in Sweden, Norway, Finland in the very north of our countrys. Im so surprised you guys didn't liked it! And please dont make fun of our languages that's NOT nice!!!

the song is ok for eurovision, enjoyable. The "bridge" is song by a real Sami, it is tribal, very personal, you may compare it to indian chanting. Try to picture the mythical landscapes of the far north, where people has to adjust to harsh surroundings. This kind of chanting has been done there for hundreds of years - so I guess you are right when you say it is outdated...

To anyone's whose confused the 3rd man is sami. The sami is indigenous scandinavians who originated in Mongolia came via Siberia. They moved on to populate Greenland and northern Canada as Inuits and therefore is the first to discover North America. The original Mongolian/Siberian people also traveled east into north america and met the Inuit and became the people we now call native Americans when they travelled south.
The song style is not ancient Norwegian or viking language. It is yojk. A proud form of long distant communication used by the sami for untold decades.

@@ToyAndGoy I'm from Norway and I'm not offended in the slightest. It was your honest opinion. :) And the guy who is joiking has a pretty weird voice. Joik can be beautiful though, if you want to listen to some nice joik I suggest Ella Marie - Maze or something by Mari Boine.

The traditional singing is real, but not strictly Norwegian. The singing is called joik. It is a style of singing from the sĂĄmi people. And you know what, it's beautiful!
I love it. I have no idea why people think its satirical. Its is demonstrating the culture of Sami people in Scandinavia. In my top 10 for sure

The bald guy you are talking about is called Fred Buljo. He represents the sami people (the indigenous people of Norway). He is joiking, and it is supposed to sound like that. If anything, his joik is a bit modernised compared to the old school traditional joik. I believe you just think it's weird because you haven't heard it before, just as traditional singing in India might be considered weird by some people because they are unfamiliar with it. For me through, growing up in Norway I hear joik quite often, and I think it was a good and natural component to this song that made it unique in a way and made it stand out from the masses a bit more, while at the same time showcasing some Norwegian culture and heritage (not only the joik, they also sing about spirits which are quite common in sami culture and northern lights that are possible to see in many areas far north in Norway and is in many ways one of the trademarks of Norway). In my opinion KEIINO has managed to show a whole lot of culture and at the same time blending it into a catchy pop song, and for me this is one of the best songs Norway has sent in years!
Yes, it's very different to things we've heard before, and Goy is very sorry if he upset anyone with his comments. The joiking was nice and we knew it must have some deep heritage, but the arrangement of the song didn't do it for us, I'm afraid. Just a few words: The staging in green and blue is supposed to symbolize the northern light (aurora borealis). The same with her green dress and the blue shirt. The sami guy is wearing leather - rather traditionally.
It is most definitely traditional sami joik. That is, you dont sing a joik, it is a verb - you can joik something or someone. I guess they are going to do extensive promo work in front of the finale, and surely explain everything about the song. But I like this song, it gives me better vibes this year than in maaany years.

And the darkness in the first verse, when they have lost their light, and their freedom i illustrated by the dark stage. "Theres nothing here. They call me nothing". The light on stage appears just at the point when the joik sets in. The joik symbolizes the spirit. And in the second verse: "My name is freedom, come find me". The story of all poeple fighting for freedom. For aborigines, gay-people, or women. That is what the story is about.

This is my favourite song there by absolutely miles. I love Fred (Joiker part) :) Not sure about the contemporary dancing, but that bit can be sorted.
I had a livestream with the norwegian head of delegatiaon og the Facebookpage for escNorge yesterday, and he almost confirmed that there will be no dancers on stage like it was in MGP. But he didnÂŽt confirmed or dinied it. But I donÂŽt think there will be dancers in Tel Aviv. But much more northern light.

Well, facts is not your thing ;-p But i guess you know what tribal culture is? And the singing here is a traditional samii sort of singing, called "joik". Norway had joik in our entry in 1980 in Eurovision as weel. "Samiid Ădnan". This song contains three "stories". ItÂŽs the story of the fight for liberation for LHBT-people, the fight for women rights, and the fight for the human rights for aborigines all over the world. Even if it is samii people, indian people, rom-people or what ever. The song is about lossing freedom, but find motivation and fighting-spirit. A motiviatioan in the contiunuing struggle for freedom to all people. The spirit animals are important in the samii culture, which you can see in te logo for KEiiNO. If you donÂŽt like the song? It is a fair thing. But next time, try to listen to the song and the lyrics before you comment it :-) Anyway, have a happy Eurovision! Yes it IS a traditional joik, belonging to the sami people in the north. So i guess it would sound strange to you, but you should read a bit more about it. And the meaning behind the song. It's very saddening to hear that you feel it sounds like a parody though.
We do not mean to offend, it just doesn't sound to us to the same quality or currentness as a lot of the other songs so far.

The tribal part was quite catchy and will capture attention in the Eurovision. But the similarity to Monsters is striking. The song itself is not bad and will definitely qualify for the final.
I can understand the similarity with monsters. But de minor D-chord is one of the most used chords in music. The tunes D-F-A-D after eachother is the similarity with monsters. And you have many other songs who has thes four notes after each other :-)

I really like it, it's catchy. I did not get the drum part but I heard it's traditional Norway music, it has a name. For me the chorus and the guy with the low voice makes me think of Barbie Girl by Aqua. Love your reactions!

We are sorry if you feel we bullied you. When we reacted to this all of the vocals and the sound quality seemed very off, so we felt like this entry was not very polished. We since reacted to the official video, and in our recap songs we stated how much it has grown on us and we loved it. We would have been so pleased if it had won!

Norway sadly has the biggest copy-cat song this year - it s a mix of Saara Altos Monster and bit from Rednex - Spirit of the hawk.... furthermore.. the Voices re not catchy... especially that Mini Mouse voice from the Woman.,... but probably Norway decided 2 send this song cause of the Native Sami language part.... which is great from idea... but... "it sounds 2 other cultural ears a bit confusing" ... the drums at the end save it.... well we know it well used from Denmarks win......... definetly song disappoints me .... cause lack of originality... when it reminds of other songs.....

Even before that man began to sing we felt like something was very off with the production of the song and the sound, and unfortunately it's not for us. We are sure it will do well with some more dramatic staging, but it didn't capture us I'm afraid. Thanks again for your comment!

No matter what really thank you guys for the honest reaction. I think most ppl first time listening Fred Joiking would get the same reaction as you guys, but I really don't think you stop the song in the middle while he is joiking is a good way of judging this song...maybe that is why some ppl angry comment you guys under . This song is turn out to be the fifth...the first round vote drag KeiiNo into the 15TH POSITION is really unexpected,maybe those professional judge has little knowledge about joiking part as well...

I agree with yous on this one. From my side, I see that Norway have a bizarre signature of sending mish mash songs in recent years. With Icebreaker in 2016, I felt like they went âan even tempo, easy to listen to pop song. This could do nicely!â. They then said âAn anthemic, slow number with an interesting key change. This will work!â Then scrambled the two together to make one mediocre, clunky tune. Theyâve done the same this year, the catchy aqua-esque part is nice and the joiking is also nice- but theyâve stuck them both together, and they cancel each other out in the process.
Yes, we have no problem with the joiking, it's the entire arrangement for us that doesn't sound cohesive enough at all.
