    "Spirit in the sky" is a story about brave men and women that have fought, and are fighting, for the right to be RESPECTED and LOVED for the person you are. It hasn't always been esy to be the "different one" in a society/community/group (something Fred who is a minority in Norway (Sami), Tom who is gay and Alexandra who said she was bullid as child because of her weight, can relate to). According to pre-christian Sami religion, the People had helping spirits. These could be in the shape of an animal, called Sáivu-loddi or Sáivu-sarvvát. So they wrote a story set in Sápmi many years ago, where a person is calling upon hers/his helping spirit for extra strength in a difficult situasjoin. With the joik the singer try to convey the feelings that the Sami have gone through, having been discriminated against for hundreds of years. The song also contains a Sami stanza; “Čajet dan čuovgga”. It is translated into "Show me the light".

      Gem, I don't know Sami culture but I could tell by the words that it's referring to natural spirituality of the north. The joik sounds very close to Inuit throat singing in Canada. Fred's deep baritone voice is wonderful. When I first heard the song, it reminded me of male vocals in Russian folk music. It was brilliant to add the breadth of vocal ranges to the song. It was by far my favourite of Eurovision, which I have only seen for the first time in my life. We all know the other well known group from Eurovision is. I hope Keiino does just as well as ABBA has here in North America.

    I absolutely love Norway this year (last year's track with Rybak was fun too... I thought people took the lyrics too seriously/literally) and they're most likely going to kill it with the televote like Denmark did last year. The style of singing that the bald guy did is called Joik, which is done by the Sami people in the Nordic countries and he is Sami himself. I think this is going to do very well in Tel Aviv and it's slotted in at 4th place on my ranks.

    I understand what you mean about Monsters vibes, it's not prominent but is noticeable. I have this right beside Serhat which is perfect company because these songs are really fun and feel good. I was so disappointed with Alexander's return last year, 'That's How You Write A Song' was not great to begin with and to have it performed by a returning Eurovision Champion who won with such a different entry was just a misstep for my tastes.
    Spirit In The Sky is really playing into what Eurovision fans love the competition for and I think this will be a more memorable Eurovision moment in years to come over the songs that are really hyped now. I have one minor issue which is the staging because I want them to have what they have here - the three of them, the two dancers, the drummers... obviously they can't have all that so it will be a bit pared down which is unfortunate but it isn't a big deal. I do want on the Eurovision stage for this to have a better juxtaposition in the lighting so that the joiking breakdown is very atmospheric in contrast to the more upbeat party vibes of the rest of the song, I would love some Sami imagery incorporated also. It will be an injustice of the highest magnitude if this doesn't qualify but I don't know if it's likely to win overall (I'd be really happy if it does!). I still hope it performs really well though, it deserves a good result.

    Myrtle you are very cute but I digress,lol Regarding the eurovision contest,I'm british and although our song ain't bad it isnt as good as about two 3rd's of the other songs,our song just isnt anthemic enough and he isnt the most photogenic singer which shouldn't matter but im afraid it does.The vast majority of songs have attractive female singers.My faves are Netherlands,azerbaijan and norway.im surprised to see so many dance tunes this year with a few excellent ballads thrown in.I usually never watch eurovision but I actually enjoyed the semi finals this year,the standard of songs is really excellent.Eurovision is no longer a joke competition.Chameleon is a blatant attempt to copy the winner from last year 'netta' and it seems to have worked so far but i doubt very much that it will get anywhere near the top.Finally I dont think it is fair that 5 countries don't have to compete in the semi's to get to the final.I suspect some if not all of them would have been voted out at this early stage including the uk

    I've watched your other videos this year as well and I wanted to let you know that I appreciate them. You seem kind of laid back, frank and like you're trying to be fair an objective as well. I also feel I get a sense of what you're probably like to hang out with. It's like you're not trying too hard which I appreciate. Some reactors go all in with the gasps and wide eyes and it can seem quite disingenuous. I don't like that.
    This doesn't quite make my personal top 10 but I do like it. And it's certainly better than Rybak's song from last year... I truly hated the scat part of "That's how you write a song". Hard.
    It *should* make the final although I tend to believe it won't do quite as well there as some hope. Again, not because it's bad but there's just better - and more contemporary - songs on offer. And I don't think this will do well with the juries. Top 10 at best, possibly a little lower depending on the mix of song in the final.
    Also: They allow 6 people on stage. Many choose to hide the 6th person (in that case it's always a backing singer) which is why you will often only be able to see 5 of them.
    As for me, this year I find it hard to truly finalize my rankings. I keep changing my mind. For my part, I do have a clear favourite which is Malta. And my close runners up are Cyprus and Slovenia, again followed by Serbia. The next bunch of songs includes Sweden, Albania, Poland, Czech Republic, Estonia and Italy. The order of these is much more fluid.
    I also enjoy songs outside my top 10 and the fluidity continues down there until around 20th or so. And by then my interest is vague enough that I don't actually care that much about the exact ranking anymore. I also think I've settled on Montenegro for the worst song this year. I feel the revamp just made it even worse with everything they threw at it. Once the new "local" instumentation kicks in, it just feels Irish to me. It's awkward.
    Anyway. Keep it up, I like your approach to this.

    • @MyrtleP
      @MyrtleP  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for the vote of confidence! 😊 Yeah, I try to just be myself.
      I keep hearing people talking about Montenegro now, so I'm getting super curious about it. I loved Lane Moje in 2004, but none of their ballads have really spoken to me on a deeper level since then.

    • @Leifdk1
      @Leifdk1 Před 5 lety

      @@MyrtleP I love a good balkan ballad but that is definetely not what Montenegro is serving us (fortunately Serbia has that covered for us this year though!).
      Although Montenegro is one of the popular picks for "worst song in 2019" I've seen some people liking it, so who knows how you'll feel?
      For me, there's just something very forced and dated about it and I believe they have absolutely zero chance of qualifying. Despite being in the "easier" semi final.
      There's an "original version" of it from when they won locally that is very 90's sounding and then the current "revamp" where they threw anything at it that would stick. Now it sounds late 90's early 00's and when the (presumably local) string instrument sets in, it almost sounds Irish. And like the Corrs (if you're familiar) are going to join in at any minute.
      I'll pass on that one (even though I like the Corrs well enough).
      But you still have good stuff in store. Watch out for Slovenia, Serbia, Italy and... possibly Poland? Mind you, you might potentially hate Poland come to think of it. It's a bit of a wild card with a very specific, traditional singing style. Regardless, it's a love or hate kind of song.
      I am also curious how you will feel about the current favourite, the Netherlands. I like it fine myself but I am just not having the emotional response to this that most people seem to. And I'm a little jealous that I am not.
      So, yeah. But we'll see! :-)

      Hi again! I think that the Montenegrian song became a litte bit better in the revamp, because it wasn't the same note over and over again and the instrumental did the litte break I needed from all those falling, calling etc over and over again. Ok it might be a bit Irish, but I personally prefer the Irish thing to falling, calling. That's just my point of view......

      @Leifdk1 Před 5 lety

      @@lindakristinekjlibraten757 Oh, hi again... I hope you got your phone troubles sorted! :-)
      I think for me they just threw too many elements at it and in the end it didn't feel any more current for it, only more contrived. And so it lost that bit of nostalgic 90's retro vibe that it did have going for it.
      Having said that, it was never going to have a shot at qualifying in either version.
      Mind you, saying it's my least favourite means just that. I don't hate it by any means (I do tend to skip it when it comes on though!).
      On a side note, I initially heard them sing that they were falling *not* into someone's "heart" but rather into someone's "*rse" (that would be another world for "behind" or "rear"). I cannot for the life of me unhear that again... but at least it's amusing! ;-)
