It was only like a year or two after Canned Heat introduced that boogie riff to rock audiences with *On The Road Again,* which was their best song IMO... czcams.com/video/qRKNw477onU/video.html&ab_channel=MrPhil198622
Greenbaum's "Canned Ham" followed in 1970, and the record reached number 46 on the American charts and number 26 in the Canadian charts. Another hit record.
@@chrisjenkins6120 Yeah... I have 4 older brothers & an older sister that all would have thought you and I 'pecker-head teenagers' for liking music like this! Next older one turns 75 this fall & the oldest turns 88 just after Christmas. I guess they're right, I must still be just a PHT... You, however, seem to fit right in to my generation! 😏
From 1969 or 70, I think. I was in middle school, and now I'm 67 years old. 60s and 70s were the best times for music, in any genre, but especially Rock. Thanks
Indeed, a Jewish person singing about Christian beliefs, with Native American spiritual overtones. We need some of that kind of integration in the 21st century. Thanks for carrying the torch for Silas, & for your reaction.
Norman Greenbaum was a paradox. He was a orthodox Jew singing about Jesus. He was a folk singer who gave up a acoustic guitar for a Fender Telecaster with custom fuzzbox built-in. He gave up a career in music to become a goat farmer.
Another one hit wonder from a few years earlier that was real popular popped into my head, but I can't remember the name of the band although I would know it instantly if I heard it. The song is, Winchester Cathedral.
Interesting choice of music, and I like it. When Silas gets back or if you want, I know the perfect band for you guys to react to…literally The Band. They started as Ronnie Hawkins' backing band, then becoming Bob Dylan's backing band and recording The Basement Tapes with him, they went out afterwards and became an iconic and influential rock band with hits like “The Weight”, “Up On Cripple Creek”, and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” along with an iconic concert film “The Last Waltz”. Those guys are always worth a listen or two.
That song has been in so many movies. I had forgotten about that really incredible thick guitar sustain that he comes back in with later in the song. Great lineup!
Written by a guys who wasn't a Christian. In an America which was pretty much Christian. Some of them got peevish about the "never sinned" part. :) I really love this song.
Lonely is the Word by Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio on soaring vocals (never mind Tony Iommi on amazing, mournful guitar) might change her opinion of that genre.
The first solo gives me early Black Sabbath vibes and the ending solo gives off Clapton vibes from his Cream/Blind Faith era. One of the best "One Hit Wonders".
In all the rock songs and all the guitar stars in all the years from the 60's to the present day, I have never heard guitar tones quite like the ones in this song.
I visited with Norman several years ago. I said he wrote one of the original Christian rock songs. He said he is not a Christian he just writes good songs. In fact with his name it can be easily seen he is of Jewish descent. An outstanding song.
Love this song... Thank you for reacting to it... I remember hearing this as a kid in the 70s but got to know it better in the 80s when the British Glam Rock group Doctor & the Medics released a remake of it in 1986. I ended up buying both on vinyl... You thought you might have heard it before... it was used in the movies Guardians of the Galaxy and in Evan Almighty and Apollo 13.
It's funny how people lesson to the song but they don't really know what this song is about lesson and learn the word"s to this beautiful song 🎵 🎶 ❤ 😍 ✨ 💜 🎵 🎶 ❤ 😍 ✨ 💜 🎵 🎶 ❤
We miss Silas, too! He will be back in a little over a week. He is having a great time in Asia. Hopefully, he'll make a video about his travels. Hard to believe he's gonna make to Yellowstone and Thailand in the same summer!
Great Reaction Y'all =) When Silas returns make him check out the best all female Hard Rock band in the world ! Band-Maid "Blooming" MV is very heavy song and almost Metal ! Great Video As Well =) Thanks for keeping great music alive !
Interesting song written by a Jewish musician who challenged himself to write a rock song about using a relationship with Jesus to get into heaven. The whole thing is a brilliant joke that took off and continues to remain popular. Love you two reacting to music. Silas can stay on vacation for however long he wishes. 😉
A one track wonder of a song, very different in an era of amazing variety. Nice pick and reaction. Also very nice to see Alivia again, she does not care for metal because she has not heard the right kind, that is classic metal from the 70s & 80s, when it was real and melodic and not consumed by speed or melded to Industrial or Rap to try to reach a different audience. Try Lonely is the Word by Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio singing or the live video of Queensryche's Take Hold of the Flame from Tokyo or Living After Midnight by Judas Priest and she would have a whole new opinion on that genre of music. There are many sub genres of metal, many are not my cup of tea but from Black Sabbath in 1970 through Metallica, that is real music and much of it would appeal to newer generations of rock fans, thirsting for better musicianship than is found on much popular radio or streaming channels. Also, contemporary head rock/metal hybrid bands front by electric female singers Halestorm, Dorothy, Plush, Liliac, Simply Restless, the Warning and Samantha Fish all have killer tunes that are very listenable, hard hitting and can stand on any rock stage and hold their own. They are all active and do tour. Enjoy some of them sometime, you will be surprised and new fans, guaranteed. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
This is a great great song. Definitely a jab at Christianity. Consider Greenbaum’s line “Never been a sinner, I’ve never sinned.” That is not true Christianty. Christians are born sinners. Greenbaum is Jewish. What’s crazy is how many of those modern Christian churches play this. Do they not know?
Song definitely not Christian. The line “not a sinner, I’ve never sinned” makes a lie of what Jesus came for (“all have sinneg and fallen short of the glory of God”Romans 3:23 and “if we say we have no sin, we call God a liar and the Truth is not in us.” 1 John 1: 8-10. Didn’t mean to preach, but Truth is Truth. But love the song, just aware it’s not right spiritually.
Came out in 1969 and was heard in "Apollo 13"
Greenbaum recorded this song in 1969. We all called it “the one hit wonder” which it really was. Good choice to react to. I give it an A+.

This was all over the radio back when I was in the 6th grade, 1969, probably the greatest "one hit wonder" ever.
This song brought all us geezers out of the woodwork to comment, didn't it? (grade 4 for me) 😏
@@scottdebruyn7038
I’m an older geezer than you because back in 1969… I was in my junior year of high school. Cheers from a 70 year old!👩🏽🦳

FYI it was 1969. I was 14, and loved it. It was on every juke box!
Finally! Someone that was older than me in 1969! 🤣😏 (I was 10)
17 here and a Woodstock veteran. So much great music in those times.
Gotta love that overdriven guitar sound, little like the Beatles "Revolution".
This song was a huge huge hit!! I still love it! It’s very cool that his dad and you, his girlfriend do some reactions together!! Love it

I never knew that about the built-in fuzz on the Telecaster. Is that being played here?
This song never gets old! Always good to see Alivia 🙂👍
Wow I remember when this song came out. Still a banger today.✌️
One of the greatest fuzz guitar tones of all time...
Released in 1969 it reached US #3 for 15 weeks and rereleased by doc and the medics in 1986 hitting #1 in the UK
This song never gets old ✌️
What a great song. Always loved it.
The 'ultimate' one hit wonder. Another one hit wonder to check out is Thunderclap Newman, 'Something in the Air' from about the same year.✌
Yes!
Another one hit wonder from a few years earlier that was real popular popped into my head, but I can't remember the name of the band although I would know it instantly if I heard it. The song is, Winchester Cathedral.
“Something in the Air” would be an excellent choice.
@@stevedahlberg8680 Winchester Cathedral was not the only hit song from The New Vaudeville Band in UK

Greenbaum was a one hit wonder but he made a couple albums. His second album Petaluma is songs about his farm (in Petaluma, CA)
Released in late 1969.
Psychedelic gospel boogie! I was in 8th grade when this came out and it blew us all away.
Written by a guys who wasn't a Christian. In an America which was pretty much Christian. Some of them got peevish about the "never sinned" part. :)

Psychedelic Gospel, heavy on the fuzz 😎
Sweet "Love Is Like Oxygen" (Full/Long Version)...TRUST ME!!
Great choice! I love this one. My foot goes nuts from the 1st note. Silas' dad made a great choice.
From the soundtrack of sophomore-junior year of high school. Lots of memories wrapped up in this song
1970.
👍I brought the single when it was released in 1969 I was 14...
One hit wonders at its best and has been covered over dozen times there is a heavy metal version cover. Thanks for sharing.

Great classic song and great reaction
Written by Norman Greenbaum. Even though the so g has a Christian feel. He is actually Jewish. Great song!
This song is always fresh 👍
Fun fact. Norman was Jewish but added the line 'Have a friend in Jesus'
to make it more commercially accepted at that time.
Silas’ dad is the spitting image of Tim Mackie; co-founder of BibleProject.
They faded out because record companies demanded it, great reaction.
Great memories..
If always loved this song

Funny, Norman Greenbaum was a Jew, that became a Christian. Good for Him.
Great song and that guitar Riff is so famous.
Interesting duo. You guys did great on this reaction video.
I was 10 just starting to contemplate my own mortality. This song helped.
I have to say, that was a pretty dang good Silas impersonation...
lol at that intro. Dad, love that look as soon as the song started, same look I am sure I make when this one starts :)
Yeah, I had that on 8 track...great song! Enjoyed the reaction.
A rock n roll hymn!, BTW he bought a goat farm with his earnings
I've also always connoted this song with Native Americans. You must've been a Boy Scout too
Hey, I just remembered Canned Ham, also by Greenbaum. Pls do that one! (Also paradoxical, Greenbaum being Jewish!)
The Spirit is different for each religion

I thought it was The Runaways... Cherie Curry, Lita Ford, Joan Jett.
Spiritual rock sounding like T. Rex.
On the song you can hear them turn the guitar on and off. When you hear da da da....
