Lyrics:
When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that's the best
When I lay me down to die
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky (spirit in the sky)
That's where I'm gonna go when I die (when I die)
When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best
Prepare yourself you know it's a must
Gotta have a friend in Jesus
So you know that when you die
He's gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky (spirit in the sky)
Oh he'll recommend you to the spirit in the sky
That's where you're gonna go when you die (when you die)
When you die and they lay you to rest
You're gonna go to the place that's the best
Never been a sinner, I never sinned
I got a friend in Jesus
So you know that when I die
He's gonna set me up
with the spirit in the sky
Oh set me up with the spirit in the sky (spirit in the sky)
That's where I'm gonna go when I die (when I die)
When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best
Go to the place that's the best - Hudba
I played this at my husband’s funeral as he requested and he said play it LOUD! Rip Larry
Sorry for your loss 😇😇😇😇🙏🙏🙏🙏
Sorry for you loss, my gran said she wants this played at her funeral too, shes 86 and alive n well, such a crazy song, it gives my ears orgasms.

He knew that's the only way to play it!!!
I'm sorry for your loss. My mum had this played at her funeral with a photo montage, when she told my brother she wanted this song he was mortified but she got her way in the end. Since the funeral all me and him have been hearing is this song x

Sorry, for your loss but you will see her again!
My wife went to the spirit on October 15, 2022.. This has become a top song on my playlist for my service when my day comes.
I've always been a sinner; I've always sinned, but I've got a friend in Jesus.
So many preachers misunderstood these lyrics. I remember how upset it made me at the time
AMEN, We are all sinners!! GOD Died For our sins!! 🙏❤️

I don’t appreciate that this song says he never sinned 😢😮
Nan--What he meant by that is , he never sinned because Jesus died on the cross so all our sins are forgiven (if we pray for forgiveness.).

My father did two tours in Vietnam. He passed away in his sleep 7 years ago. He was 100% disabled by the VA from Agent Orange. I grew up listening to this music. This was his favorite song and we played it at his funeral. He was an awesome dad. Being raised by a Vietnam vet was a unique experience. I miss him so much.
May his memory be a blessing.

I have a friend Greg who is also a Vietnam Vet Tunnel Rat.....also affected by Agent Orange...so sorry for the loss of your dad 7 years.....which was 7 years less suffering for him.....my friend struggles every day Bless you

My wife of 36 years died on 10/29/2023 of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, and I think this is appropriate to play at her Celebration of Life service. We are children of the 60's, 70's, and 80's! RIP Ruth (Barry) Hockenberry 1964-2023 from your heartbroken husband Gene❤
Update--it's been 6 months and 18 days--I miss her more today than the day she died! My life is harder without her, and I will always have the pain of love lost!

@genehockenberry5194 I’m so sorry, it hurts severely. My wife of 22 years just died Monday 11/20/23 from stage neuroendocrine carcinoma. It spread to the pancreas, liver, spine and lungs. I’m heartbroken and this song helps.
@dudejibaba I'm so sorry for you loss - deepest sympathies and prayers for peace & comfort.
I was 15 when this song was released, and on holiday in Devon in England's West Country with my parents. We were staying in a farmhouse, and the owners daughter, who was about my age, invited me to a local disco with some of her friends.
54 years later I can still hear 'Spirit in the Sky' booming out. We had our lives in front of us, thought we were invincible and the future looked bright.
Having been on life's roller coaster, and experienced some lovely ups and painful downs, I'm on the final leg of the journey. Songs like this can open portals to memories long forgotten.
Try and enjoy every day, folks. Life goes by in the blink of an eye!

So Sorry for your loss. I understand where you are coming from. I also have lost 2 of my Brothers (younger) its still hard as 1 passed in 2005 an the other in 2020. I often have to go to my music just to cope. It's still hard everyday.
I have a twin , and I know ultimately one day one of us will go, the other will be left changed, don't cry since they are gone, enjoy the time you spent together, and love the people you care about more, since one day we all return to the maker
My brother passed away in ‘92. I’m still drying my eyes over his loss.

@@thecasualrider2668your absolutely right I'm in hella pain and the pain of losing a parent especially your mother is unbearable to take I can't stop thinking and crying about her and I been crying so much it hurts to cry and even wipe the tears away from my eyes but that won't stop me from the pain of thinking about her. Man I remember when I was young kid I would tell my mom and dad crying and hugging them tons of times saying I love you and don't want to lose you both because I understood what death was at a very early age. I always told my mom and dad I loved them daily and it never stopped and I had mom's in my life the whole time and she would help me out with my epilepsy and when I had seizures she saved my life many times when going through violent seizures and the last time was in July. My mom's heard me fall over upstairs in my room and she knew to call 911 and came up and was doing CPR on me from not breathing and my face was in the carpet while my body is violently shaking from the seizures and when I came to three days later from a short coma the drs told me if my mom's didn't hear me fall over I would have passed away cause I had 9 violent seizures and they had to revive me in the hospital. Thank God for her in my life and back in April is when I found my mom unconscious on her bed with foaming out her mouth I called 911asap and saved her life then from her first stroke and she was hospitalized for a month. When mom's came home I took care of her and after a month or two her health was getting better but had to use a oxygen tank to breathe better. I thank God he let me have 5 more months with her before she passed away and I done everything I could to save her when finding my mom slumped over on her bed and thick dark blood coming out her mouth and nose, I grabbed the phone called 911 and I was doing CPR on her shaking her screaming my loudest to do anything to get her to wake up. The pandemics came quickly and took over and done everything they could to revive her and watching that happen in front of me was so painful to witness that I haven't been able to get any sleep or even eat much and I can't take myself downstairs it's too painful to be in the same room where your mom's just passed away at. My mom's was a great woman and mother and she helped others in need with food clothes shoes whatever she could and that took to us her kids that we do the same thing like she done and I helped a lot of people make sure the families in need that their kids had Xmas presents, new bikes, skateboards, new clothes, shoes, backpacks and school equipment and I thank her for giving me that because it feels great to help others in need and truly it's better to give than receive. My mom helped my dad 24/7 when he had throat cancer and she barely slept she wanted to make sure that my dad was tested with care because she had to clean out his trek about once every hour or two and he was going through chemotherapy so his health was going downhill from that. She helped him beat cancer and if my mom's wasn't their like she was he wouldn't had survived cancer not even with those house care nurse they try to hire for home care. but my dad passed away from his third heart attack and I seen the paramedics do everything they can to save his life with no success and it's hella painful knowing that I seen both parents pass away the same way with paramedics doing all they can to save them. They both will be forever missed and pops was a great man also, he was a Korean war veteran and he loved all his family and pops had me at 53 years old and mom's was 25 lol. Love ain't nothing but a number that's true and they loved each other very much and that's why I will always hold high respect for both of them especially mom's and she always helped me with my son and daughter with taking them to school, feeding them, reading to them the Bible, taking them to the park and so on. Sorry for writing so much it's just I'm in deep pain of losing her and just needed someone to listen to what I'm going through and back on Jan 16th I lost my best friend Stephen lofton he took his life in jail and he was a great friend always their for me. when I lost my brother to suicide in 96 he was their and when we were 15 our friend Michael Martinez his mom killed her gf, him and then herself and a year after that his older sister Sabrina took her life from the pain. I lost many people in my life from suicide, murder, cancer, and other health reasons I'm just glad to be here another day for my kids and if they weren't here in my life I would probably have taken my life by now from the pain of my mom's, just please keep me in your thoughts and prayers that's all I ask for from anyone who listens and thank you and God bless for your kind words I truly take it to heart. Mom's 12/15/58-09/30/23 pops 03/02/31-10/01/05
I will NEVER forget this song. I pulled up to the nursing home to see my Mom and this song came on. My Mom passed away that same day. 🙏💖✌ I love and miss you Mom. R.I.P.

@guaporeturns9472 it's the truth. He can be you're lord. But he ain't mine. He isn't everyone's. And that needs to be respected. Plus Jesus was human. He's not a god. Funny thing, Norman Greenbaum is Jewish, but thought it would be fun (and easy) to write a (tongue-in-cheek) gospel song. It took him 15 minutes to write out the lyrics. He is surprised when people take the song so seriously. Greenbaum has made a considerable amount of money in royalties from this song for 50 years, but he's been a dairy farmer, rather than a musician, most of his life. He will be 82 years old on November 20, 2024. He is one of the classic one-hit wonders.

For those who don’t know this was a Vietnam War anthem. Came out in 1969. Huge hit!!!
On Rolling Stone’s top 500.
We felt for the soldiers of course and that stupid war but this was a positive song that even in the face of the worst you could think of the best. It’s SPIRITual.
This is no "War-Anthem". Most inconic "war"-songs are anti war and this one was inspired by Gospel.

My husband is on Hospice. We have been together for over 37 years. He told me several tears ago this is the song he wants played at his funeral. So I am preparing the list with a broken heart.
May the Lord guide you and keep you strong. 🙏 God bless you both 🙏
Oh My God. I just went thru this with my wife as well. 45 years together and I played this song for her on hospice and she died 10 minutes later. So sorry for your loss😢
You married a man with great taste.
When you hear this song it will start to mend your broken heart. Bless you
I'm so sorry to hear this. My prayers go out to you and your family. This song is so healing and when you play it sing, dance and rejoice in the fact that he is in a better place and picture him smiling, singing and dancing with you. God bless you and keep you 🙏
I dont need gospel when I got Norman Greenbaum and Jesus 💪💪
My passed and we played it in the procession. He loved this song, It took me 28 years to enjoy this the way he did… This song rocks Dad
My uncle (who was the rock of the family) he loved this song and played this two days before he suffered a stroke. So if you were at community hospital downtown Fresno California and you heard someone blare this on a speaker. That was me! My uncle wanted a proper send off. He was a Air Force man during the war in the 60s. It’s just crazy that he was playing it just two days before he had a stroke… bone chilling.
I loved that feeling as a young teen in the late 60s in a small country town hearing a new song , like this classic. You knew from the first few bars....you'd get the 45 and play it to death !
I played this song for my father as he was dying from pancreatic cancer, I believe it was the last thing he heard along with me saying I love him
I have listened to him for several decades bloody brilliant
Thinking of my mother in law today. She passed from cancer over a year ago. She was a strong woman of God. She loved Jesus. I know exactly where she is right now and that brings me peace. Rest easy with that spirit in the sky Mary ❤️
One of the most badass rock n roll songs.
reminds me of platoon or full metal jacket

The Best is yet to come!!!
I love this song, I 70 wanted it play at my end too,how can our father not like this song. ❤❤❤
What a GREAT song by Norman Greenbaum !!!❤🧡💛💚💙💜
To have everlasting life you absolutely must trust in the person and finished work of Christ alone for salvation.
Why does it say, “Never been a sinner, I never sinned”???
@@lisamwood3
It should have said;
"I've always been a sinner
But I've been washed
Washed in the blood of Jesus
So I know that when I die
I'm going to resurrect with the Spirit in the sky."
My mama passed away Oct 2, 2022 and requested this song played at her service!! I miss you mama, love you!!
I fell bad may the Rest in Paradise
So sorry to hear about your lost
May she rest in peace. My mom passed away August 23 2023.
I’m seeing this almost a yr to the day you lost your Moma. I hope you feel her love while you dance and blast this song in her memory!! ❤
1 year ago today, i hope youre well. rest in peace
Ok im not making this up I was driving to Yucca Valley this afternoon this song came on at 444pm and I turned my head to the right and Saw a double Rainbow! I got the chills ( remembered this song when I was a kid in the 70s,) it was amazing:)
I absolutely love this song ❤️, it will be playing at my funeral, when my time comes 🙏🙌👍💗😇
My brother died in 1970 and I hear this song a couple of days after his death I cried and cried because he was taken from us so young cause he was only 17 and was hit and killed by a drunk driver. I think about him so much still but I truly love this song cause my brother went to his home into the sky because he was a good Christian boy.🎉
Anyone else here not Christian but just love the song anyway? Can't get enough of that guitar riff.
It's not a fully Christian song. It was written and composed by a Jewish guy who tried his best to create a Christian rock gospel song, but listed some major mistakes about Christian beliefs. Still...he did a good job and made a great song.
With everything so miraculous and marvelously unexplained in this word it blows my mind how people can still not have a belief in the afterlife or Jesus!!!🤯
This is my favourite song ever but I believe everything isa simulation
Everything is sound Frequency and vibration . God spoke Everything and everyone into this way of being . It’s all in the music . Religion is a trap to keep your vibration low . So much to unwind from our brainwashing . Infiltration of the earthly beast . We will soar like the spirit in the sky some day .
Yes.
Jesus is the #1 bro
Ya got it rite!!!!
figure me something out
Christ forever
thats wwhere i want to go!!!
Nice change of lyrics, I've always been a sinner, I've always sinned, but I got a friend in Jesus..
Listen to Dan Vasc's rendition of Amazing Grace. It's beautifully done, I cry everytime I listen to it, it's that good.
We played this at my Dad's funeral. He always said he wanted played after Amazing Grace. It sounded great in the church.
This is my dads favorite song, when he died last year he wanted us to play it at his funeral so crank it full blast, everybody was singing
My dad told me he wanted this played at his funeral one time. I don’t know why, but it always stuck with me and it’s the first thing that comes to mind whenever i hear this song. Needless to say, i’m glad i haven’t had to hear this there yet.
What a FANTASTIC song by Norman Greenbaum !!! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
I had stage 3 cancer and have heart failure. Trust in Jesus, for he is the resurrection, and the life to come
The White Light and Jesus will be a new and wonderful life
Amen! I pray for comfort and healing in the Name of Jesus!
This song gives me comfort. I too will have this played. But I have asked my pastor to clarify that I have sinned just like the rest of the population. I bought the disc and also the one that is " Come on Eileen. No mourning at my funeral. Clapping, dancing and laughter sending me off to my best journey!
My dad died. I took care of him for those last three horrific months. The last week he screamed and screamed and screamed. This song has brought me peace somehow.
God rest his soul. Our deepest sympathy. 😢
@@jackbest6677 thank you ❤️🙏
Because Jesus Christ gave his life so we could be forgiven and live with him in heaven 🎉❤ the place that is the best!
for him aswell x my dads in the sky too x
my dad was Ian Ramsey Horton TOP BLOKE! suddenly taken from me.
Love this song. Want it played at my funeral. I don't want people to be sad. Celebrate my life. I have copd
Hang in there Debbie. ❤
I just played thus for my aunt sonja Williams passed away yesterday 😢 from cancer what a lady though she will be missed.❤
I'm sorry for your loss. She is free
My brother passed at 31 and he requested this song for his funeral...one of the best songs ever...and now it's easy to think of him as a spirit in the sky
When I die and they lay down to rest! That’s where I am gonna go to the spirit in the sky! You got have a friend in Jesus!
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God - Romans 3:23
Amen. God bless you
Probably the most mainstream Christian rock ever... And it's a hippy trip video. Amazing. I love it
He’s a Jew!
He isn't Christian, just wrote it because he knew it would sell.
It's a satirical song.....he's taking the mickey.
@@thatgirlridesherpony58 Haaaa...
Interpret it however you like but I dont think he intended it to be Christian
I would change It to " Always been a sinner, Yes, I've always sinned ..,.but now I've got a friend in Jesus ". So it would be in line with the Word of God.
My wife's father passed away June 2023 this was his favorite song so when its played we think of him
This was played at the celebration of life of my friend Bert. Rest in peace Bert. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I love this song. If I could I’d travel the country, going through the streets blasting this song.
Life is Eternal, Everyone!!!
This was a big tune in 1972 l was on a parachute course at RAF Abingdon then and this song always reminds me of those days.
I LOVED THIS as a teenager, what am I now yrs later, a Spiritual Medium - who knew 🤷🏼♀️🙏🏼💗
This song has nothing to do with the evil you involve yourself in. If you don’t repent you’ll go to Satan in Hell tucked in a lovely hand basket. Jesus is the only way to Heaven. Without him there is no Salvation
@@_jms430 Evil. RUBBISH, Jesus is a Spirit. We all have a Spirit within
This song is so good, so deep it makes me cry.
My brother n law died the 16 of November and I like to delicade this song to him I and the whole family already miss him alot GOD BLESS YOU!!!
I was a child of six in 1970. This song was all over the radio back then. Memories of childhood innocence and still a great song.
I was eight in 1970. Great time to be a child. I look at today's world and feel badly for kids today and am thankful that I grew up in great times.
13 year old here. 👋 luckily my parents have great taste in music lol
Affirmative Control a Great Song of its Time.
@@NoOne-bp2jwI was 2X that age in 1970. Truly great times to live in.
@@jayjaynella4539 Yes they were. If I could go back, I would.
This song will always be in my heart as I child it made me want to follow Jesus and still does all these many years later ❤
This was the last song played at the funeral of a dear friend today, at his request ❤️ rest easy Greg - I hope Heaven is full of “nice days” - love you so much
