  • Video of the Gauge 1 garden railway of the late Robert (Bob) Head taken in 2001 by a member of a visiting Swiss G1 group.
    A documentary about one of the biggest G1 layouts ever built. Sadly the layout no longer exists. Dedicated to Bob Head and all those who never had the chance to visit Bobs layout.

    A real model railway! A miniature masterpiece. People say its an old man's hobby, but it shows ingenuity and skill to buld things like that. A skill sadly younger generations don't appreciate or skills that have been lost.

    I had the pleasure of visiting this layout once with my uncle (who's a G1MRA member) back in the nineties. Mr Robert Head was such a gracious host.

      Lucky you! I was too young then and not yet that much involved in this great hobby as I am nowadays. One of the few things I regret not having taken the chance to do while it was still there.

    Brings back good memories. Spent many a happy day there in the later years, laying most of the new track and relaying the older track. I certainly remember soldering the brass rail on copper clad sleepers for the dual gauge track across the bridge, and of course standing on the raft as I laid the track across the bridge. I never did get a gauge 1 loco though, but fortunately Bob let me run many of his locos.

    I so often see people pushing locos to clear condensate when starting. I have an Aster 35028 (built by myself from a kit) and an Aster 232U1 (factory built). Both will start an 18 carriage (G1MoCo BR MK1s) train from cold without pushing. And the train almost immediately goes onto a 1% bank and does not hesitate to manage the climb, even on the first circuit from cold. I just wonder why so often locos struggle to start or is it just impatience? I take my lead from JvR who teaches us to open the regulator slightly because the wire drawing will impart a degree of superheat (the temp stays pretty much the same but the pressure drop means that the steam is now above the saturation curve). After the first few wheel revolutions, I open up further to manage the climb. I do use RC which helps a lot on a track with a bank. On the other hand, my Accucraft BR4MT is a pig to start, even with a light load and using the drain cocks. I bought it secondhand and it is mechanically clapped out. I need to overhaul it.
    The track here is gorgeous and it's a huge shame it no longer exists. It puts my track to shame for sure. But then again, British (and European) layouts are so often gorgeous, I think it's a cultural thing, to be celebrated! (I'm British but in North Carolina.)
    I'm adding this footnote: I have 18 cars so of course I wanted to see how 35028 and 232U1 would cope, handsomely. But having done a few runs like that, I probably won't make it a habit for it does work the loco's hard and the clapped out 4MT has cautioned me not to wear the two gorgeous Asters out!

    What a waste that it was all lost except for the Royal Albert Bridge. What became of all the track?

    How freackingly huge is that property?

    • @LiveSteamFreak
      @LiveSteamFreak  Před 3 lety +1

      Pretty large. If you search for "wadlow dr, shifnal" you get an aerial of the property which houses a building company to date. The position of the large oval must have been to the north of the house and the track through the meadows to the north east. With some imagination the location of the ponds can still be seen. Sadly all gone now

      @@LiveSteamFreak the Royal Albert Bridge still sits across the pond & I believe parts of the viaducts still exist.
