  • #PostalPleasures Presents: Canal Zone Stamps Ep1 - From Goodwill Haul Bag 1 - Rare High Value Stamp Found!
Please join me while I explore small bag of #stamps from bag 1 of my collectable postage stamp haul from a #Goodwill store.
Before get into the details of the lot and the treasure I found within lets take a moment to learn about the Canal Zone.
The Panama Canal Zone was created on November 18, 1903 with the signing of the Hay-Bunau Varilla Treaty. The Zone exists for 5 miles either side of the #PanamaCanal, with a few exceptions, bisecting the Isthmus of Panama. In my opinion this was one of the greatest achievements of the 20th century shortening the distance by thousands of miles and in turn time for vessels to travel between the Atlantic & Pacific Oceans. Just think of the #CarbonEmissions Saved!
The #CanalZone was leased to the US for $10,000,000 & a yearly fee. In 1999 control of the canal reverted to Panama.
Every since I got my first US stamp album I dreamed of finding some stamps for the back of book pages like Hawaii, Cuba, and Canal Zone. As my collection matured I have accumulated a very modest assortment of Canal Zone stamps and just recently received my first 3 Hawaiian stamps from a generous viewer.
When I first peeked in these goodwill bags I was very excited to see the Canal Zone stamps featured here. I knew they would be one of the first sets I of stamps I explored. Its been about a month since I bough them, its been hard to wait until I had time to make a video but ultimately my patience was more than rewarded.
I may have found a very rare and valuable stamp. Scott# CO11 In Mint Hinged condition. While my head may be in the clouds my feet are still firmly on the ground and I am tempering my expectations as when ever I find a stamp which seems to good to be true I always need to be aware that it could be a forgery.
I have spent a short time studying the stamp and looking up the prevalence of forgeries. So far, to my "Inexperienced in this particular area of philately eye", the stamp appears genuine. And if so may have a catalog value of $1,250 or more. I never expected I would ever own just a valuable stamp. even if it turns out to be a forgery it has been an exciting experience to find, research and share with you all this stamp as well as the remainder of the lot and I value that every bit as much!
I could ramble on about how much I like the other stamps as well, in fact there are some very stunning stamps in this lot but watch the video and see for yourself!
Please, if you're well informed about Canal Zone stamps and in particular about Official Airmail Stamps please share your opinions. Thanks to all for watching!

Of course I had to go off and measure my set but unfortunately they were all 19-20. Great find. Definitely worth expertizing.

I measured my first one and almost stopped do to laziness and knowing how unlikely it would be to find a 17mm, but convinced myself to measure the rest. I was very surprised when one measured 17mm!

This purchase is really the gift that keeps on giving! It might be worth getting the the 30c stamp expertised?

It may be, I will have to research the expertizing process as I have never really considered it before.

Great find! First I would check the print type of the overprint. It should be made with letterpress, but you should recheck in your catalog. Normaly you can verify the type with a 10x magnification lens. After that I would send it in to have it expertiesed.

Thanks for the tip! although I will admit I struggle to identify print types unless the options are distinctly different. I will try to do some research. My Scott catalog doesn't mention the print type for the overprint.
