  • This video is about 100 most valuable and some rare stamps of Argentina. Argentina was discovered in 1515 and was annexed by Spain in 1534. Name Argentina comes from the Latin word for silver - argentum. Search for silver was main reason for first Spanish settlers in Argentina. Philatelists have defined period from 1858 to 1892 as "classical period". Dates define first Argentinean postage stamp that appeared and first commemorative one. By mid 1850s, postal services were not unified as postage stamps were issued by separate provinces, such as Cordoba, Buenos Aires and Corrientes. Interestingly, Corrientes stamp of 1856 was designed and engraved by Matias Pipet, a baker’s delivery boy, who served as an apprentice to a French engraver before arriving at province. With no one having such experience, Matias was asked to prepare a stamp and he copied design of famous French Ceres stamps. First stamp of Argentina appeared in 1858 and depicted seal of Confederation. Four years later, designs on postage stamps adopted seal of Argentine Republic. Until first commemorative stamp of 1892, postage stamps used portraits of men (such as Bernardino Rivadavia) and other elements linked to period of Independence. These might have been influenced by period of stability following the fall of dictator Juan Manuel de Rosas in 1852. In this video I have briefly discussed the characteristics of each stamp. The values mentioned are only for the particular image shown with the text.
