My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

When I bought my 3rd house it had a lot bigger yard than the last two and I definitely needed a riding mower. My parents neighbor gave me her old Murray rider, the two speed Model, high & low, so I was glad to have it. So after maybe the third cut the left side began to cut lower than the right, I adjust this thing a hundred times if I did it once had me tore not being able to get it level. I thought it was a blade issue but nope. So one Sunday morning after two passes and getting pissed to no limit I jumped in my truck and went and got myself a Sunday paper. Just as I was hoping Sears had a sale on riders. So I pulled out my sears card called to see what my limit was and was good to go. Told my girlfriend at the time I’m going to Sears to buy myself a New Mower let’s go if your going. Got to Sears bought a Sears LT1000 and I couldn’t quit smiling! Was so proud and happy I went by my parents house to show my dad! Gave the Murray to him for my grandmother’s yard. He found the problem with the uneven cut. He pulled both spindles and he put it on a mic gauge and one rotation there the problem was, bent spindle. Could have save myself a lot of money if I had known about such part or problem but the Craftsman didn’t disappoint! I had that mower for 20 years and she still looked brand new when I gave her away and the only reason I did was because my parents neighbor had bought a Scott’s that they had problems with since day one, dad said it was the vent on the gas tank, nope it had a short from the factory in the switch. I noticed every time that I was in a bumpy part of the yard it would either cut off or back fire. Pushed it to my garage put a block on the seat fired it up and just started shaking and pulling on every wire it had, pulled on the switch and there it was, started backfiring, EBay and $13.00 bucks fixed it. I know the first owner spent right at a $1000.00 and three trips to repair shops! Keep up the great content, I love learning new stuff!

Bre it is the OLD MAN at Eliminator Performance commending you on do a good job and taking care of the neighbour, smart move. Just a note: a while back i changed out a deck spindle and wanted to test if the zerk fitting and grease would actually do anything with the new both side sealed new bearings. Took the inner seal out to check the grease and it was packed and full of a blue coloured grease maybe marine? Assumed the other bearing would be the same so did not check it, but reinstalled the inner seal and by hand and paint stick started to pack the inner spindle housing with RED & TACKY grease, yep you guessed it red in colour. Hand packing just helped me out by not requiring to pump around 70 pumps from the grease gun to fill the inner housing. Anyway i reassembled the bearings and pulley and started pumping the grease gun filled with a new tube of red and tacky until grease back pressure could be felt and grease started coming out of the bearing ends which happened to be blue in colour so i figured the red grease must be displacing the blue. Disassembled the spindle and bearings again pulled the inner seals on both and guess what? Red grease was going into the bearing through the inner and outer diameters of the seal i guess no other way for it to get in there. So the moral of the story is do you want to pump 210 times with the grease gun to possibly make those bearings hold up longer and grease them every year cause grease will go in there just not sure how much but the two colours say some goes in.

Actually the spindles are designed to take grease through the hollow bolt out holes and fill the center of the spindle. When installing bearings you are meant to pop the dust seals off the upper side of the bottom bearing and lower side of the top bearing. This allows grease to enter them and be spread among the balls and cage. Now honestly the system is flawed as unless you grease them regularly they dry up and don't take grease. Also they use damn near a third of a tube per spindle which largely just sits their most of it's life. Nice thing is they are cheap bearing so replacing them every so many hours and not wasting the grease is not horribly hard on the pocket book. I have had three of the very same decks one on a Husky, on a Craftsman Pro and one a Poulan Pro. As always you give great advice and tips that will help homeowners save money and get more life out of their equipment. Thankyou very much and best wishes from Atlantic Canada.

I definitely enjoyed this video. You are quite charismatic and experienced. However, as others have already pointed out, working on such equipment while wearing sandals and moccasins is dangerous! You may have done this for a long time and never had even on small wound but, the clock is ticking. It will happen and you will not like the results! Also, it sets a very bad example for others who have far less experience!
Aside from everyone worrying about your feet, this was a well done video. Personally, I do not like to use impact tools to tighten nuts and bolts. There are torque specifications for those parts for a reason. Someone can over tighten those mounting bolts and the cheap castings will break while in use. In addition, I use anti-seize compound on dissimilar metals such as steel into cast aluminum. If those parts ever need to be serviced again it will be easier to remove them.
Keep up the good work in the shop and keep making these excellent videos. That is, once you put on some decent work shoes! LOL

I realize there are videos out there, but none with your quality of yours! Some do not even include all of the steps, they talk way too much and do not get things done, they are extremely sloppy in the way they do their work or the condition of t hear they are working in,, others tell you they will be back after they do something, but do not show what it was they were doing while they are off camera and you have to figure it out. Earlier this summer I had worked on my neighbors Husqvarna of the exact same model. He mows about 4 acres of which about 3/4 of it is wooded. I replaced a spindle on his. It didn't come tapped but did have the self tapping bolts. I didn't know there was another option. I also didn't realize that the blade side could be different.
He had brought this mower to me many times. I've had to re-weld the welded brackets on the deck back on, where they were stress cracked and peeling off the deck. Along with issues of the drive belt kept coming off. Finally after the third time bringing it back for the drive belt issue, I tore every part that had to do with the drive system off of it. This time I took the rear tires off to get a better look at the top of the transmission. I had it jacked up using the pull tab where you connect a trailer to. This released the upward pressure on the transmission allowing it to drop down. There were two 13mm bolts on the front of the transmission broke off. I dropped the trans and tried to drill and easy out the broken bolts from the housing. NO GO!! Wound up using a regular drill bit to completely drill out the old bolts and re-tapped the aluminum housing. OMG! It was a nightmare of a job. Took me almost three days to get it repaired start to finish. And as @Marc Davis said I'm not young anymore. Plus have debilitating back problems. Was SO GLAD to finally find out the real problem and get it FIXED.. Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming. Love your channel.

I have one of this model mower that is about 12 years old. The hour meter shows 800ish hours, but it went a couple years disconnected. In that time, I have had to weld a broken deck hanger bracket, replace a broken spindle, install a short block because I had a slow oil leak that suddenly got much worse so I ran it dry and I have replaced all the steering gear twice. Oh, and probably 6 or 8 sets of blades; we don't just grow rocks, but it rains them here, too. The hydrostatic drive is getting to where it won't climb every grade on our property, so I suppose that's probably next. None of this is me complaining, but rather praising that it has held up to mowing our rocky property. I use the crap out of it on about 3 of our 12ish Texas acres from March to October. I think we have gotten our money's worth out of it.

I had to replace a spindle assembly on my daughters mower. I think the reason the bolts break off in the housing, is because they assemble them with a self tapping screw, and the aluminum housing, with a steel bolt, is the perfect combination to freeze a bolt in a thread.
I put anti-seize on the new bolts.
Her deck also had been assembled with the blade NOT on the spindle star, and it mushroomed the spindle. I just took my die grinder, with a cone shaped carbide burr, and carefully cleaned up the mushroomed star, to fit the blade on properly.
Those grease zerks work great on the spindle, if you take the inner seal out of the bearings before you mount the assembly on the deck!

Good video but you should have removed the bearings from the new spindle, remove the plastic seal on the inside side of the 2 bearings, then reinstall the new bearing in the new spindle with the unsealed side toward the interior of the spindle. Removing the plastic seal of the bearing actually allows the grease to penetrate to bearing. If not, any grease will That’s what I made when I replaced my Spindle on my Husqvarna LT2042 last summer. 90% of all the spindles that have issues at my shop are broken housings or stripped stars on the bottom. Even without being able to grease them, because of the sealed bearings, that is usually not the issue. Probably because we grow rocks in Arkansas. LOL!

    • @zapman47
      @zapman47 Před rokem +3

I do that all the time straightened deck shells. You can try this method. First identify which spindle area that is bent. To help you remember the axis or if a compound bend I would recommend marking the deck. Remove the mower spindle on the affected area. Now look for cracks in the paint or bulges, I find it easiest to feel for them. On the high points beat them down with a 3 pound hammer you will get the touch with a little experience. Then flip the deck over and pound the opposite side of the bend. Mount the spindle and check for blade tip alignment. You may need to repeat the process several times. If you can get the blades to within a 1/4" you are not going to notice it in the cut.

Lady, you are knowledgeable. I have a mower you might find interesting. I have a Craftsman Pro Series lawn tractor, with a 42 inch deck. After 450 hours I was going to replace the factory bushings. I received the bearings in the mail and when I tried to install them I realized that first they were too large, and second the factory bushings were not steel------they were nylon. Surprise, surprise, when I looked at the axle I was amazed that there was NO wear. Yes no wear at all. I don't know how much longer my mower will last, but whenever I buy a new one I will try to buy nylon bushings. Investigate this and, between you and I, I would install these on ever mower that came in my shop and give people a lifetime warranty on the front wheel work.

The plastic will let grease into the spindle bearings. Maybe you'd like to make a video yourself showing that it is possible to do. Cause I didn't think you could do it either greasing a spindle sealed bearing the force pressure of the grease will push the plastic seal around the bearing will move enough to let grease into the bearing. Love your videos!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you spun the new shaft, it was quiet, as it should be, but the left-hand shaft made quite a bit of noise, and the right-hand shaft was making noise as well. I just did the same job and purchased a kit from Amazon with all the rotating hardware. The kit was $129.00. I didn't want to have to repeat this process again in the near future. I had replaced the original spindles with real (maybe) Husqvarna spindles or very good fakes and had one mushroom. I just bought a set of spindles which may be made by China, Inc. They have grease fittings on the top of the shaft, suggesting the shaft is hollow to grease the bearing. Real or not?, I didn’t disassemble to see. Quality seemed acceptable and so far, so good.

Always get a kick out of your videos. My JD 110 from circa 1993 or so just broke a spindle also. lol. Darned things just don't last anymore. Anyway, the blades looked exactly like this one and I also had some epiphanies around the pulleys. You cannot remove those center nuts without an impact gun. The pulleys on mine were tough also. I rebuilt the whole deck and spent a lot of time with pry bars until I remembered I had a pulley puller in my lower chest. Again I did it the hard way, but found out after that the little holes in the pulley are for bolts. uh huh. So in another 30 years I'll probably forget all this. My tip to you is about the threaded rods and hammers, put a nut on the end and catch a few threads. Bang on the nut. You can replace that if you get crazy. Thanks for all you do. You're impressive.
