Will it run?? Today we go over how to clean and rebuild a carburetor of a MTD/Remington Engine, only to find out that WE DIDN'T NEED TO in this case. The customer did not let us know that they had been into the engine before they dropped it off, (They said they ran it one time and then let it sat), which means I go to diagnosing it like it has never been taken apart. This is why it is VERY important to let your mechanic know when you have tinkered with things. This could have been a 10 minute fix instead of a 30 which would have saved the customer about $30.

My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

A beautiful lady with so much knowledge, and truthful
Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower czcams.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.
Many thanks for posting this video.....I never ever serviced a carburetor, so this was a revelation. You made it seem easy, but just to be sure I was doing things right I watched the show three times! First, I removed the bowl and found it was full of a red jelly-like substance which I cleaned up right away. After cleaning where suggested and three teardowns I still wasn't getting any fuel. Then I remembered the part about having the gasket lined up, so a couple of small holes weren't covered. That was it. I reoriented it and on the second pull it started!! It's running too fast, so an adjustment on the black screw should take care of that. You are the best!
Totally LOVED the golf tee hack!
Just getting into small into repair. Your insights are invaluable. Thank you. And you are pleasing on the eyes. Dale.. Ozark Missouri
Nice watching someone who knows what they're doing!
Small engines have always thwarted me. I was never taught to work on them. Chickanic is my teacher.
Thank you.
The self repair was completed thanks to you~!!

Awesome channel. Having worked in my fathers small engine shop part time for 40+ years I really enjoy watching these videos. There are so few small engine shops now keep up the good work. By the way, dad is 80 this year and still working on stuff.
The stories of what he could tell. 👍
Good for your Dad , I'm 78 and I find working on my stuff really helps to keep me sharp 😊 .Best wishes to your Dad 👍👍 Ian, UK 🇬🇧
Loved the freeze frame when you wrote I knew it wasn't the carburator.
You have patience of a saint
Good eye catching that metal ring ,your right it's not easy fixing others mistakes
Gonna keep watching you until I can start my own shop. Feel like I'm getting a small engine masters degree, one video at a time.

I love youtube! Even if you went to school, it could take years and mistakes before you learn to do it right. It's nice to just go on CZcams and watch some of these valuable videos!
I just fixed a guy's snowblower. For the tin and stuff to get carburetor off I took bowl off ethanol victim ordered a $20 carburetor from Amazon. Cleaned tank work perfectly
Golf tee trick is absolutely genius
This is another channel that I stumbled upon by accident, and I'm very glad I did! It's refreshing to see a pretty face in the small-gas engine repair world, and you certainly know your stuff! Thanks for sharing your videos with us. God bless. Rev. D.
Thanks so much!
The fuel line clamp wasn’t reattached. You gave him a piece of his own medicine! Another great video
At our shop we see this all the time! People take stuff a part and get it wrong! Its makes my day! Here is the good part they pick it up and they want to know what was wrong and tell them and they say we didn't mess with it! Okay! after 40 some years you know if some one been working on it.
Yup! We know! LOL
Can't blame them for trying, especially gardeners, it costs a fortunes to service and fix machines in our trade, or should I say you guys charge a fortune🤷
@@Dante-vf4sd if I may suggest, gardeners should take better care of your machines. Also, check your tillers operational a couple weeks before you need to plant. Gardeners are a cantankerous bunch that get all upset when a mechanic is prioritizing a commercial unit over a tiller. When the mechanic tells you the commercial guy needs to make money to live, it does no good to tell the mechanic you need the tiller so you can put food on the table. It isn’t the same thing and you all know it. A friend of mine owns a shop, the stories you hear...
@@1anthonybrowning No you may not suggest, how dare you presume that gardeners don't take care of their machines, as if they wouldn't given its their means of staying alive you arrogant buffoon.
@@Dante-vf4sd thank you for making my point about cantankerous gardeners. Not only do some gardeners not take good care of their machines, but the think they should be the highest priority and get anxious to insistent that the shop fix their machine immediately, above people whose income comes from their machines. I hope that clarifies.
You made this video so incredibly interesting and entertaining as well. Thank you ! Looks, talent and humor. What a rare combo.
On these big box store motors from out of town I like to add an inline fuel shutoff it's a bit cozy to fit in but dose give the customer a fighting chance to keep the cab clean during the off season. Thank you for doing what you do.
I watch a lot a small engine repair mechanics and you take the best close up videos. I've seen lots of carb rebuild and yours is by far the clearest and most easily watched.
Wow, thank you!
And the background ain’t too bad either! 😎😎
You are a natural educator. Clear and methodical
This is the same carburetor as my Powersmart 170cc i got from home depot. It was also not starting, the fuel would not get to the push knob. I spray starter fluid in it and it starts then dies. Thanks to you Chickanic, i was able to take it apart and know what to do to clean the carb. Now it runs like new. Thanks for ur excellent work. Now i opened the windows and i get the smell of fresh cut grass coming thru my window. :) Cheers.
Thanks for being in my small engine life.🌹
These aren’t as easy to work on as one might think……..it takes time and time has a price.
Thanks for sharing the little details that are necessary for a finely tuned carburetor setup. These things are so sensitive to the smallest adjustments.👍
I like to learn on weedeaters also.
One thing always check the oil before attempting to start any engine, I learned that the hard way, I had to buy and replace one, great video, I've been working on small engines for 35+ years, subbed 😎
I am learning a lot from your videos. Thanks for posting. I am not a small engine mechanic and find these very helpful with all of my light equipment.
This is the first time I've seen your channel.
Its really nice to see that a lady has taken the time to learn how to operate and repair a gas engine. You have my respect.
When I was playing along and trying to diagnose the problem I couldn't get over the fact that the bowl was clean and dry and when you back flushed the inlet there was no gunk coming out. You tricked me! Lots of good info in this one.
Oh no! I didn't even think about it. At the beginning when all the gas poured out of it onto my mat I laid a fresh mat on top of it. LOL! Wasn't trying to be sneaky, I swear! LOL
so I am not the only person that occasionally forgets to put the hose clamp on before the filter base. Sometimes I had a difficult time holding my attention on that carb in this lesson. So refreshing to see a gal that knows her sh_t mechanically. Always a great job!
Thanks for watching!
@@Chickanichey why is my weed eater bogging down???
Good info - Thanks! I've been a mechanic for about 50 years and "Know a bit" but the specifics, like you show - safe a LOT of time!
Again, Thanks!
Thanks! Your video is the ONLY one of several I've watched that accurately targeted how to fix my Southland field trimmer carb problem. Great job!
I was really nervous to take the carb off my Southland string trimmer and work on it, but I followed your instructions step-by-step and it worked! I was so amazed that it started, and it is running better than it ever has. You rock!!!!
Good catch on finding that bushing. I noticed you left the fuel line clamp off for the next person to find also!
Whoopsie
Just what the world needs, Another Crook!
Lol. I knew someone else had to catch that.
yeah, i caught that too...lol
Yup, I wanted to yell, "wait, you haven't installed the clamp!"
Great job young lady
Thanks for posting ! I have this unit and local mechanics won't work on it ! Thanks to you I can now take care of it !
I feel your pain Bre. I'm currently waist deep into the transmission of a 1997 Ford Econoline van. Because someone didn't install the filter properly. You have to actually push the filter into the transmission, not just toss it in the pan.
eh, its a ford automatic transmission, theres not a single one that didnt need a rebuild anyways lol
I've never taken a carb apart before. This is the 3rd video I've watched on it, and you did a much better job than the other two. I love how before you do a step, you mention the things to watch out for in that step. The others just name the step, do it (or even skip to just after it's done) as if there's nothing to it, and move on, with no insights on the possible gotchas. Great job, now I can give it a try.
Watch Mustie1. He revives old crusty stuff, including a lot of 2 cycle stuff. He is always fixing old carbs
This what makes you a great ‘MUTT’. Multi purpose Technician & Trainer. You don’t just say how, but you show how AND why.
For the second time tonight I'm watching one of these fantastic videos and the machine being repaired is the same as one that's sitting on my workbench waiting for me to get to it. I'm hooked.
Thank you, really enjoyed the video, and as per the other comments, spotting the metal ring was brilliant, cheers
I was about to say wait.....you forgot the fuel line clamp.

Guys, I thought we were here to learn about engine repair.
Hahaha
Just wanted to thanks you for a tip that helped big times. Troy Built walk behind self propelled, would not start. You showed to lift it on the front wheels and shake just a little. I put it down and first pull of the starter it fired and running again. Thanks again.
You saved once again from having to take my machine in. You are so detailed on your instructions that it makes it easy and fun. 😎
If you get a gas welder tip cleaner it has all sizes of rods with ridges on them that clean the holes better than a straight wire. For long tubes or hoses an old or new (they are cheap) speedometer cable works great. They are very flexible and have ridges to grab junk. I owned a shop and share your feeling about customer induced technical problems Nice work.
I'm ecstatic that you know the difference between nuts and bolts. So many videos I've watched where guys don't call even the simplest parts by the correct name. Irks me to no end. The sad part is they don't even realize they're wrong. Thanks again.
Its just all part of the imperfect flawed human condition youre blemished as well
@@sundial6919 I know, but geez, call a nut a nut and a bolt a bolt and for crying out loud please turn the wrench in the correct direction.
@@donaldshimkus539 😅i know what you mean . I too feel your frustrations . Wish we werent so flawed some more than others Cheers my friend
Yes that always seems like the problem with getting single parts after a company has been bought out by another company no single parts can be bought you almost have to buy a whole parts machine to canabalize for needed parts. Oh the joy of working on something somebody else messed with is right. Thanks for a great video.
Another job well done.
Another amazing video. Great catch on that little ring. Clearly someone had that apart. Guitar strings are the best for cleaning emulsion tubes etc, I have a bunch from my guitars as well!
I use cutting torch tip cleaners.
Have done this on mine many times so glad u put this video on here about the gasket placement.. talk about.magneto and the ground connection that gets placed under the long tall bolt because it's very easy to forget to put that back on when doing magneto change.
Well done. I like your 10mm extension. Someone had gone to great lengths to ultra clean the carb and made a rookie mistake.
My first time seeing your channel. 👍 Just for future reference, I like to pull the drain off the carb bowl and see if any fuel comes out before doing anything else. It's a good precheck to know if the fuel is getting from the tank to the bowl before doing the other work. Great for diagnosing. It must've been a man that worked on it before and forgot to tell you. We're great at communication 🤣
Action speak louder than word. Lol
That embedded and hidden fuel screen is “prevention of repair” to sell more carburetors. I just punched holes in it with a needle, in a pinch. Later I’ll try to add a install a fuel filter in the gas tube.
Be careful not to dislodge the suction tube on the plastic housing when removing it to access the carburetor.
Glad to see knowledgeable people in the trades.
elaborate?
Wish I had watched this last season. You make it look so easy. Thank you.
Keep this trick I devised years ago for the future when you do carbutator work..
Try this... Heat the plastic tube from the carb cleaner spray with a lighter (about 1/4-1/2 inch from the end. Then pull on each end of the tube to stretch it. This makes the outer/inner tube diameter smaller and more of a pin point. When the melted plastic solidifies, use small wire clippers or nail clippers to snip the tube at the smallest diameter that still provides flow when spraying. The cleaner comes out like a pin point pressure washer and the shrunken plastic tube end fits inside whatever port your spaying thru.
You can also do the same to create 90 degree angles in the plastic tube to spray sideways inside long venturi tubes. (like the idle circuit)
I used to make/keep custom tubes around for these situations. Hope this makes sense.
Good tip, I used to make custom jets for moped carbs like that!!!😎👍
Very clever. I'm gonna tell everyone I know that I summoned this thought. Lol. Hey dont judge. You will do the same. Ahhhah
It's always fun figuring out what the last person or GOOBER as I call them did wrong.Thats all part of the Scooby Doo mystery and becoming a knowledgeable small engine chickanic.Glad to see you wrenching on something other than a chainsaw
Great video ! Every time I take something apart I take pictures with my phone so If I forget how something went back together I can look back at the pictures. That has saved me a lot of trouble.
You saved me when I worked on mine, and I thank you so much......I scoured the internet trying to figure this thing out....no manuals available that I could find, and "Walla" there you were....so thank you, thank you!!! Have a great day my go too, Master Mechanic "Chickanic" your the greatest!!!
I used to cruise a tiny muni “recycle” yard and found what looked like a brand new MTD 8 or 10 hp chipper. I was born a tinkerer so I threw it in the back of my pickup and took it home. To make it short, the only thing wrong with it was the spark plug boot was misinstalled! I put it on correctly and vroom-vroom. People in America just throw away stuff.
@last426- it's because of the gradual loss of basic skills over the decades.
Ditto! I've scored all kinds of equipment because "It won't start". It's usually the simplest of things to fix like a loose spark plug, choked out air filter, ans so on.
Had a guy that had 3 mowers and said he couldn't get 2 of them to run. He said if I could get them to run I could have them. One was a very nice TORO and the other was a Troy-Bilt. Instead of working on them he would just buy a new mower. He was putting very old gas in them and leaving it in the mower over the winter and they were just gunked up with bad fuel. Cleaned the carbs put in fresh gas and they started right up. Tried to give them back to him but he said a deal is a deal.
It's not just America although we maybe leading the way
In today’s world where everybody has a camera because everybody has a phone, there’s no reason that before you take something complex apart that you don’t take 20 or 30 pictures of every angle to make sure that when you’re done putting it back together that everything is back where the manufacturer intended for it to be.
do that all the time pics of it as is..... and pics of it being taken apart, easy to put back together then.
I get more things that are fine, but the gas line are backwards, or the linkage is missing...
@@GuysPlayingWithTools I hate to put together things I did not take apart
Yeah, in my videos I say "remember to take pictures" every time.
never had a cell phone and never will
Very good explanations and camera work. Thank you so much. Now there are fewer things I don't know! Awesome!
I noticed you forgot to put the gas line clap back on. I am only on min 12:00 so I am guessing you will notice you forgot it. Seriously Great information and skill in all your videos. Love them all, they give me the knowledge I would not otherwise have to fix my small engine products TYVM.
Lifelong mechanic now in QA. I’m learning a lot about small engine quirks here, so thanks for sharing! Hate to nitpick, but it’s fuel and fire hazard related.
Was the fuel line clamp was restored to its proper position? The filter base was installed over an unclamped line.
It probably won’t leak much with just gravity feed but its hidden behind the air filter base and will leak eventually after vibration and chemical degradation.
Back in the 70's,when I was a tractor mechanic for John Deere, Deere sold remington chain saws as their own brand .
I still see a couple John Deere trimmers that were just Echo's painted yellow.
I still have a couple Remington chainsaws from those times. And Poulans and Danarms and Homelites and a Lombard and a lot of Frontiers - all orphans .

Thank you for making this video. I went to crank up the RM1159 yesterday and it wouldn't start. It would start with starting fluid so I knew the spark plug was fine. I found this video and cleaned the carburetor following your steps and now it starts up just like last year. Thanks a lot!

Great job as always! Did you remember the clamp for the fuel line?
Shhhhhhhhh...... lol
That's one of those self clamping clamps 😉
Low pressure fuel system...clamps are optional 😉
I was coming to post the same thing
That's one of those wonderful "Chonda" motors. Chinese Honda clone, works OK but extremely sensitive to any sort of dirt or fowling in the carb.
I watched one of your videos a few months ago about weed trimmers not running. I tried your suggestion and cleaned the exhaust screen using a small blow torch..... It was like magic ,that thing never ran so good!!! Now the wife can start it with no help from me.
So funny, you said, "save you time, money and frustration in the future"...We say the same thing constantly to our customers. Thanks for the vids. I wish we had time to do some on the gas issues. We see the craziest "gunk:" ever these days. Gotta love the EPA government forced fuels.....wrecking small engines from shore to shore. You're killing it. Less than a month and tons of viewers. Hope your making money on these. Cheers.
I loved the golf tee, never saw or used that before. Will give it a go once I get some.
I have always used a vice-grips (long nose flat clamp) to shut off the fuel line.
Not always a good idea on older machines as the fuel line can crack (as has happened to me at least a thousand times).
Greetings from Ireland - where the grass never stops growing :-)
Same here I'll give it a shot too👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
It it cracks that easy it should be replaced anyhow.
Don't want to be picky but I believe at 12:30 you replaced the air filter and never clamped the fuel line to the carb.
Shhh. LOL! I did have to go back and put it on.
@@Chickanic Still great info, thanks for posting.

Shhhh. LOL! I did have to go back and put it on.
I saw that too.
I got a laugh when you mentioned that Remington doesn't make anything. It's so true these days. When I started wrenching on small engines our dealership sold both Poulan and Remington chainsaws. That was 1971.
Another great, easy to follow video !
Awesome little trick with the golf t’s!!
chickanic you rock
Since it ran great after being put back together correctly I wonder why they messed with it in the first place?
All they said is it only ran once and then wouldn't start the next time they tried to use it. I will DEFINITELY be asking questions when they pick it up. LOL!
My 2020 model lawn edger only ran once then at season's end failed to start. When I took it in to the shop, they checked it over and put fresh gas in it. Started right up. Modern gear seems more sensitive to stale gas than the old stuff.
@@benishborogove2692Do you have the massive increase in ethanol in your fuel like we do here?
That was my exact question.
@@Dante-vf4sd I'm not aware of any changes to the fuel. It is rather closely regulated. Fuel system parts however, are constantly being "improved" to make them cheaper to manufacture.

So just a tinkeritis caused massive vacuum leak huh?

Michigan. In Fall the gas tank is emptied so water doesn't condense in a layer on the bottom of the tank. In Spring, if it won't fire up after gas fill and oil level check and 3 seasons in a cold shaded garage, I leave it in direct sun for minimum 1/2 hour to soften lube contacts and put some vapor in the carb. Starts right up. May not work for everyone, or every model, but it's worked fine for Craftsman and Deere for the last 30 years.
Thank you so much! Enjoyed the view as well!
