Since you asked, Mike, here's some Gyruss trivia.
The era of this arcade came from a dark age. So dark, software that we take for granted today... like Paint type software... was not around to rotate sprites. In order to pull off this really awesome 360 degree rotation ability, one guy literally burnt the midnight oil just digitally drawing this ship. Over and over. In every tiny degree of the circular rotation. I sure hope that guy was bought a beer for the tedious effort of upgrading the classic Space Invaders into a position where no borders could stop your motions.
Another arcade trivia byte. In the real arcade, they installed a special sound system to really push those classic tunes for a special treat for your ears. Emulators tend to botch the audio horribly for that very reason. The NES does its best to recreate the experience.
Arcade had no bosses or super weapon. Which makes the NES an exclusive hybrid port/sequel. Both of these additions are perfect improvements that complement each other.
One of my favourite NES games growing up.
My mom was a beast at this gem.
The song is Toccata and Fugue. My High School marching band played a version of it for our field show. Pretty badass to play, if marching band is your thing.
I hit that notification so fast when it said your playing one of my favorite nes games!
How I have put so many hours into this game. (The arcade has taken me for a lot of cash, too.)
The NES continues to amaze me with it's cool graphical tricks.
Love the 360 rotating controls, this game would be great with a paddle or dial like Tempest!
Fave Mike Matei Stream Memories: 1) yelling at Tobi in Kings Knight, 2) beating Arcade Ghosts N Goblins, and 3) viewer watching while driving and wanking with lemon Pledge crashes car
From my experience for SimCity difficulty only seems to affect starting money, landforms 061, 137, and 714 are ideal (least amount of water on map), Industrial zones should be placed on map edges to reduce crime and pollution by half (the half off the map doesn't count) and Residential and Commercial zones should be 3X3 grids, and start with nuke power (coal is useless).
Gyruss gives a extra life at 50,000 points and every 100,000 points afterward up to 950,000 points and the ship that sometimes briefly shows up then disappears is just the life counter reappearing at the begining of a new planet which shows total lives for a second and when you have only one life the single ship disappears as the final life is not otherwise displayed. Arcade machines could have the points threshold for extra lives adjusted on a machine by machine basis explaining the odd numbers sometimes given by the chat.
Favorite memories:
You doing the A-Zone and playing Rygar
GARLOZ LIES IN GRAND CASTLE
You remember that. You remember that till the day you die.
And my other favorite was when you were going through Crystalis and that guy was talking to you about Taboo and how he wants it up on his wall.
Taboo? That weird Sun? 😂
3:17:41 Truly a conversation that would only happen with Mike
I love this game. Still have my copy. Takes practice to master. Gets crazy at the end.
I'd like to see you try to come back to beat this game.
I watched a video on the nes version and it seems like the player saves the special weapon for the bosses most of the time.
If I remember, the final level is diving into the sun. It's sort of pictured on the box art. I struggle to reach that level. Never mind passing it.
Halfway through the video, I decided to try this game on an emulator. I am now asking myself why didn't I have this game back then. I'm already hooked.
Does the Everdrive account for the authentic NES performance and slowdowns as well? A Everdrive is like the Dosbox on PC when running DOS games?
If there is any good in this world, Mike is gonna be streaming just like this from the nursing home. “Hey, you like streams, huh? Check out this stream” as he holds up the urinary catheter. “Try and ban this” 😂
I am looking forward to him still streaming with his thoughts from his brain in a jar in the year 3000 AD.
For whatever reason I have a hard time getting this game to work on one of my NES consoles and it's always glitchy I tried cleaning it. So I started playing the arcade version on Xbox 360 arcade from my Xbox Series X. Yeah, I do like it.
solid version of this on c64 back in the day.
Well. Missed the stream, so here I am. Thanks for the upload.
This game was brutal in the arcade
Nice artwork
So its like tempest
The Konami code works in this game but you have to enter it backwards
🙃
I saw the arcade version on STARCADE.
great show
What dragon slayer game was he talking about on the nes?
Mike 😮 You need to hear "vanesa mae toccata and fugue"
with simcity, you actually need low tax to attract people, and create a city that generates small revenue, then set the speed to very fast and collect incremental money for awhile until you can build more which increases tax base, turn up the speed, rinse and repeat. eventually you start making lots of money, but the year is like 2400.
Hmm.
Keptin, great stream as always
Memorize their patterns as they come out, mash the fire button!
Alright, its MIKE 😎
Rented this game to death back in 89!
It’s like tempest
😮 This game is so good!
Great stream! Konami who is really Ultra and Palcom who is Konami and PAL version of Ultra 😆
That’s funny, my girlfriend’s nickname is the Domekeeper
52:00 MMMM MMMM MMMM MMMM
Never even heard of this game but I think I like it because of the gradius vibes (edit: oh it's konami so no wonder).
However, I do think I would get annoyed that you can't move closer to the center of the screen. Instead you're forever stuck on the outer ring.
Limitations of the game's heyday. A guy literally worked all day and night on drawing that ship at every possible position. There simply was no software aid to rotate or shrink the ship. Now if that guy wanted to draw that ship ten times over... sure. Going inwards would have totally been possible.
Today, we'd just drag, drop and click. Or ask our software to resize the sprite along with rotating it.
Tomorrow, we'll just pester an AI to make it.
Two videos this weekend Mike u must been busy
Mike can you do a full Zelda Wind Waker run? Please
Just oozing with Konami charm 👂✨
The conversation with the chat is hilarious the artwork and the game is amazing.
Does anyone remember Nuclear Strike on N64?
will you cross stream twitch and youtube???
❤
Try playing Lunistice!
Any good?
@@mikematei Should be good
Keep the shmups coming!!
GIT GUD!!!!
Classic arcading was always that way.
Its pronounced Gear-Us
👾👾👾
It's Gyruss, the Mutant Virus!
Given what you said in one of the Sim City streams, how this game wrecked your thumb so you could not play for several days afterwards, I am getting a bit worried now. While not playing with a keyboard and mouse for PC games like Doom already sucked, when it has now gotten to the point that playing games where you have to tap the button to shoot wreck your hand in a different way than carpal tunnel, that would mean that most classic run & gun and shmup games would become unplayable for you as well. This double sucks. :(
While I can tell that you liked Gyruss, I wonder what you think about those rear shooters (or whatever they are called) in general. If you don't have anything against them, there's a Famicom shmup called Animal Attack Gakuen which is also a rear shooter and might be to your liking.
Otherwise, in shmup news, I have been playing Counterattack: Uprising on the Nintendo Switch in the past weeks. You can select different ships, you can change the difficulty setting from Easy to Hard, it has a campaign/arcade mode (i.e. a mode where you have to beat it on the amount of lives you have and you get no continues), it uses the Gradius system of powering up but does it in a way that is not annoying (i.e. you only lose part of your power-ups when you lose a life) and it has several different routes you can check out offering replay value.
Games that are still missing in your Games I've Beaten On Stream list:
-Super Castlevania Bros. (NES Hacks/Homebrew/Unreleased)
-Dome Keeper (Hardest Setting) (PC)
-The Legend Of Zelda: Fall Of Hyrule (NES Hacks/Homebrew/Unreleased)
Mike, please play Mario vs Donkey Kong... you chump.
Did
Watching you play this game that I love-no offense, you kinda suck. I just want to snatch the controller and show you how I play. Great video, Mike!
This is my first time playing it for more than 2 minutes
@@mikematei yeah I get it, but you can’t say you’ve never watched someone playing a game terrible and you just wanted to snatch it away. Lol. It’s a great game and has a great soundtrack. Love your videos ❤️
This game always looked like shit to me, I wasn't a fan of Tempest either though... You are doing real shit putting time on these for us Mike. Keeping interest and these games alive is a good thing!
