These names would be jokes not individual bits and Pete is not breaking during this sketch, his character is basically the childish straight man who is recognizing the jokes along with the audience, while the other actors act either as though it’s a very serious situation, or they’re idiots and don’t notice the names, or a combination.

You know… it’s late at night and this joke just permeated my awareness. Haha Thank you!
This skit is immaculate. The entire setup is ridiculous, but they pull it off so well. Rachel Brosnahan playing it so seriously added a bit of realism that balanced out the inappropriateness of McKinnon’s anchor character and the first responders reactions. Then, they somehow top all of the hilarious names with one last absolute banger right at the end. Just… immaculate.
Kate Mckinnon's shameless puns & jokes are totally underrated in this, frosting on top of the cake that is this wildly childish immature stupid content. Love it! 😆

I think they were referring to the fact that Pete Davidson's dad was actually a firefighter who a died in a collapsing building (one of the towers on 9/11).
For anyone who didn't know this, I'm not kidding.
I also found this to be oddly moving in such a segment due to what David ^ said. In the beginning, of course before she read the names, he looked strong. I don't know about comfortable or unaffected, but I'm happy he can find a way to cope through comedy, including his own movie King of Staten Island.

Pete’s appeal is of an unknown reason. Like Benedict Cumberbatch. Not traditionally handsome. Kinda lanky and gangly. But just so unapologetically himself. And seems like he’d be fun and interesting to just hang out with and pick his brain 🧠. There are depths to be explored.
He'd be fun to hang out with in the same way it'd be fun to hang out with a sausage maker. Once he explains to you all of the nuances of "how the sausage is made", he'd be a bore. Trust me, there are no depths to be explored there. You want depths? Find anyone but Pete Davidsen. Find a local savant, an author, a professor, a veteran of a war, your grandparents, etc.
He's just being himself without pretention and that's rare. Society discourages being childlike and wants you to pretend like you have mastered life and know it all even when you don't have any clue :D so it's refreshing to see someone giving a middle finger to that.
