Each sequence going through 5 or 6 programs is so common in animation indeed
33:40 whoa, that's exactly what happened when I watched it. The very beginning of the video feels a little weird (maybe even cringe) but then that feeling just falls away and I got sucked in and couldn't look away until the end
Adding a pipeline to add a key word "open mouth, closed mouth" and in betweens via face detection and expression detection... in 3 weeks this is going to be wild.

It exceeded my expectations to be honest. Yeah there is a bit of flicker but seeing how early it is, what you have achieved is truly ground breaking. this is just the mark 1, I can't wait to see where you guys take this next.
If anything, some animation styles are based on this flicker. Like Joel Haver's. It would not be the same without the insane flicker.
The movement is a bit uncanny but it can definitely be easily fixed to look more like an anime. I am all for this tech and its cool.

Didn't you guys admit in your bts that you based the entire style off Vampire Hunter D, directly using frames from the movie? So then wouldn't people who are calling you out on that be doing what you told them to do??
As for the originality, yeah you guys had original stuff from the writing, cinematography, acting, etc. It's just as soon as you get to the art it's like "well we just want it in the VHD style". Like plenty of productions have similar styles, Castlevania comes to mind in terms of similarity to VHD, but they made it their own. The way it was done in the video just feels like "well we want it in that style" and not really giving it its own identity in the art style.
Like throughout the years your guys' videos have had their own identity because of how you utilized FX, the cinematography, the stories you've told. You guys had all that originality already, that's what made you stick out. Now it just feels like you're hopping on the hype train of "AI art" like what you did with NFTs and it pulls away from your identity that you've crafted for years. The other anime videos you guys have made were incredible, so much fun and energy, they had their own identity referencing anime but grounding it in reality. But now you're trying to step over that line of reality into anime while still trying to stay within the confounds of reality. You guys even said it was difficult to do posing and stuff because it didn't quite match that anime style.
Like you're missing the point of animation as a whole that it allows you to create things that aren't possible in reality. As long as you keep trying to make things better conveyed in one medium while stubbornly staying within the confounds of another, you're going to continue running into the same issues as here. You're not going to get things like intentional smear frames from the AI because it's just interpreting the frame as it is. It has no concept of what it needs to convey, just that it needs to change the frame from one style into another.
And it's understandable that it takes a lot of time and R&D to make the workflow that you guys did. It's the exact same for animation teams, just look at the Spiderverse animators and what they came up with. But the fact you're trying so hard to get an anime style just without any of the foundation of animation is telling. Like you might as well bring on actual animators at that point.
Niko you gotta stop with this "democratize" art nonsense. If anything VFX isn't "democratized" cause Adobe and similar programs are expensive. Other than that, the only thing holding people back from learning these art forms is TIME, not accessibility. Pencils and paper are pretty cheap, get a notebook and you can make a flip book for animation. Blender is free and doesn't require an expensive computer to run. There are hundreds of free tutorials on CZcams for people to learn from to improve their skills (except yours that you put behind your website paywall, not very "democratic"). There's next to nothing undemocratic about art and acting like the upbringing of AI will democratize it is just completely disconnected from reality.
You guys have industry professional animators and artists come on your React show all the time. Bring it up with them, ask them if art is currently not democratized enough. Let the people who are in those fields speak about their experiences and how they feel about this AI art tech. Cause the issue isn't that the AI exists, it's how careless people are with it's use and how artists' work and labor is ignored and further devalued with the push of AI. Artists are concerned about the further exploitation that will come with unregulated pushing of AI, how nonchalant people are to use artists' hard work for their own benefit. It's not a fear of the AI, it's a concern for people's value and labor.
"Yeah go ahead, everything with this is free."
You guys have industry standard lights, cameras, green screen, high-end computers, you didn't say how much you spent on those costumes just "yeah we got it from Etsy," AND you put your step-by-step tutorial behind a subscription. You gotta stop speaking half-truths. The tutorial alone should be free if you're so concerned with "democratizing" art. Most artists already have free tutorials on CZcams.
Lastly, about the "team sports". There are more tech bros and pro-AI people that are playing team sports than there are "anti-AI" artists who are far more nuanced about this. Majority of tech bros I've seen are just "oh you're just afraid of change" "oh you're obsolete" and try to paint artists as the "elites". Meanwhile artist critiques of AI are focused around further exploitation the AI will bring, that an unregulated AI will only hurt artists, that AI needs to be a default opt-in where artists have to choose to be included in the data set rather than just taking without asking. And framing things as "AI will democratize art" only further emboldens the tech bros against artists when basic art supplies are pretty cheap and there are hundreds of free tutorials online and free programs. You're not fairly framing the situation from the artist's perspective and it comes across as just wanting to protect your new shiny toy before it might get taken away from you or it gets changed in such a way you can't utilize the parts people don't agree with.
You guys gotta stop, step back, take a broader look at the situation, hear more of the actual nuance from artists critiques, and reconsider how you're addressing everything.

Da Vinci Resolve is free. Gimp is free. Blender is free. Audacity is free. Libre Office is free. So much software you can use is free. A lot of tutorials can be learned is free. Once you understand the basics of the tool and the design/UI language of a tool a lot of it can be translated to another vendor with some retraining/retooling of the pipeline. In the past, these tools were not available because studios like ILM had to develop their own software and techniques to do what they wanted. It was laborious and very tedious and certainly CG back then isn't what it is today but even that was all custom made in-house and one-off solutions. This is why you have studios looking to tools like Unity and Unreal to help minimize cost and possibly change an entire workflow and style of production by going to full virtual or hybrid virtual but those have limitations and their associated costs. Keep in mind location scouting is expensive. Getting permit to shoot is expensive. Logistics of transporting equipment, cast, and crew, and various departments is expensive. On top of which, insurance is expensive and the possible need to hire local help of grips and/or extras is also expensive and takes time to plan. There is a waterfall effect when decisions are made and integrating different processes and techniques derive new requirements and problems. Integrating AI as part of your pipeline now introduce a whole new set of requirements, ranging from power, to IT professionals that definitely do not come cheap when it comes to software and hardware integration. Before you know it, the virtual production department is and or could be larger than the IT department that once only had to worry about "emails" but now have to oversee a large scale cluster that consists of servers, graphic workstations, storage solutions, and disaster recovery, data loss, IT governance, and making sure the new entire footprint is safe and secure away from the prying eyes of would be outsiders that's looking to see what is going on behind closed doors....
When you really begin to see the forests you'll see there's a lot of moving pieces that makes this thing work.

@@Pilps then you may want to start unsubscribing and change your viewing habits because there are a lot of content creators and indie film and game studios that are using similar tools and workflows to get their projects completed or green lit.
The technique and software they showed is technically is already dated and other models and techniques have been released and everyday it's constantly changing. Literally by the day.

After hearing them talking about the ai prompts and anthropomorphize it. I really want a full video of giving prompts to an ai character and getting stuff back. Get a horrible monster: "no no no... NOT deformed!"
I think what you have done is impressive and I appreciate the effort that went into it. It reminds me of the animated Lord of the Rings film which uses a similar technique called Rotoscoping.
My only problem is how you talk about the animation process of hand drawn being a chore when it’s actually the opposite. Animators live for drawing every frame and controlling the movement and details of a character. If you’re an animator and you don’t love drawing then you’re in the wrong profession. It’s like a photographer who doesn’t like taking pictures.
If you do more of these I would suggest getting an animator for input and advice. You know a lot of great animators and artists and I would love to know there opinion on this.
Even for there artist who love it, having to do all that animation between the hand drawn keyframes is the busy work. So much so that a lot of animated shows will have the main studio only make the keyframes, then a cheaper studio in say Korea would handle the busywork.
@@liampugh True animation is a laborious task sometime I agree. I think I’m trying to refer to the idea that you have to love the process in order to be an animator or pursue a career in the art field.
You’re not wrong about outsourcing animation either, however who knows if AI will change that in the future.

The liminal line in psychology refers to the threshold at which a stimulus transitions from the unconscious to the conscious level. A stimulus can be detected either above or below this threshold (liminal versus subliminal). Think Blind-sight, where individuals with blindness retain some visual processing abilities in their unconscious mind without conscious awareness - versus regular vision.

You guys should contact the Drawfee Channel and Spencer Wan about doing a collab on this concept. Artists, an animator, and the Corridor Crew work together and share their personal takes and opinions on the entire process. They even have assets from earlier seasons of their Drawtectives series that could be utilized. I know I'd personally love to see members of the Corridor Crew doing green screen shots of the Drawtectives team!

@@mrSleepyguy1 - I mostly wonder what they would think about this particular take on AI Art since it is a way to celebrate the artists and make their lives easier while letting them focus on the most creative aspects of animation. They've used AI text and story generators before, so you never know.

1000% agree, I've noticed so much time gets wasted on files, folders, exporting, loading programs and BS like that. I find the problem is that these coding nerds that make these programs aren't artists/creators themselves so they don't understand our pain. They need to consult with guys like you on how to make these programs better for user experience.
It is weird that DV resolve can't export png sequences, but you can import them into your timeline.
I'm 20 minutes in and this is so relatable for stable diffusion users ....
I hope this type of AI won't replace animators because it seems like AI is going after creative people who already struggle.

I don’t think everyone understands the importance of what they did using free software. What they did is create a snapshot of what the technology is capable of at this time. People are going to stumble across this in 10 years and be able to see that animation and video production was heading into a new AI direction. Corridor are the ones documenting that direction in front of our very eyes *on a free platform*

@@Richard-pg2rh it's an addon for stable diffusion that uses various outline/poses/depth maps of an image and lets you use them to adhere more to the input image while having a high denoise to change the style without losing the original image's form. Just look up some vids of it, there are like 6 or so different ways to hold the image to it's form and they are fascinating in the ways they improve the consistency of animation specifically.
Dean's point around 35 mins about a story taking itself seriously so you can take it seriously if so well made. This is why we will remember LOTR but not Marvel. No hatred for Marvel but cynicism is good for a brief laugh. Lasting joy comes from a story of heroism not undercut by nihilism.

Would it be possible to take scenes from Speed Racer (2008) and make it photoreal? Essentially the reverse of all of this.
My girlfriend watched the video with 0 knowledge of AI or workflows, no hype, no context. Did not see any "AI jank", laughed a lot, was very into it. I watched it with a lot of baggage, in first few minutes i kept nitpicking at shadows/highlights jumping around, Nico's eye going for a walk, stuff like that. The feeling went away by the mid-video, i was invested til the end.
How did you not see any jank? Were you watching at 240p? Have you never watched anime before?

I've always been impressed by how many tools you know and utilize to get results that punch way above your budgets. Incredible as always!
Some people have loved it, others I've shown are almost offended by it because of the AI aspect. They just don't get it. But I think it's incredibly inspiring
The main dislike I saw is that it was trained on animation that other artist did not explicitly know went into the video. Main thing that would appease them is if they used in house reference or paid someone to do it which I guess is a valid criticism. Now the people that just hated the entire idea of it I can’t speak for…
@@jngobngo If a human made illustrations based on the stylistic designs of VHD, effectively copying them and they used that for training data, how would that actually be any different? None of the original art is used in the video, it's just lifting the style. What's the problem? A human copying the style would be JUST as "unethical" as using a computer to copy the style. It seems like it's just a double standard against AI tools, for.... reasons?
I mean, take something simple and make it feel incredibly serious, maybe even given it large stakes. It's the Yugioh kind of feeling. They're just playing a card game, but peoples lives are often on the line, and everyone takes it incredibly seriously, as you would expect when lives are at stake, and yet...they're playing a children's card game. That contrast isn't exactly a joke, but it is humorous, and can even be cool if you allow yourself to not take it as seriously as the characters are.
I'm so annoyed that I have an AMD graphics card ( i know im dumb ), I can't play around with stable diffusion or TTS. NVIDIA gets all the nice toys.... Can't wait till I get a new PC

I feel that you guys are at the forefront of something new, much like the CGI guys of the 80s and 90s were.
What you're doing now - pushing through the pain to reach a goal with tech that is both incredible and yet still in its infancy - is exactly like what ILM were doing back in the day.
I know you guys appreciate the fact that the struggles they had back then are things that you now take for granted. The same will be said about you in ten years.

Sounds like you need someone on your crew that has experience with some scripting. All the media management can be easily done by a skilled script kiddie in a few hours ans saves you days of work.
And about the tool being open source - any competently enough developer should be able to fork it and then make your request features available or more promienent.
If you like node based, look at comfy UI. It's close to A1111 but nodes, not sliders and checkboxes. Allows you to setup larger pipelines. And there is work to integrate it into Nuke (Fusion can't be far)

Who profits off animation from studio ghibli? Are the inidividual animators each getting a cut from the profits the movie generates? No, they are paid by the studio a set wage and if the movie makes a ton of profit, the animators don't get a cent more. Those animators are wage slaves, this tech frees them to make content that they want, their own vision, not someone elses'. Thousands of animators working on someone else's movie, and only the director and executives make bank! That is the true insult to an artists life! These guys aren't animators, they are CG and visual effects artist. Imagine the polish a real animator or even just a small team of animators could do with these FREE TOOLS?! And you'd rather they stay locked up for peanuts at a Huge Studio who could care less about an artists' vision and more about profits and cost savings?
@@Garyye721 how about making unions, or supporting artists by commissioning them, instead of giving more tools to big corporations to take advantage of the system more? Also animation tools were always free, both traditional and digital programs. It's a difficult field , takes patience and practice but it is literally free for anyone to try. ai could be used as a tool in the future by artists maybe, but not like this.
@@vanilia131 I would absolutely support making a union, and defintely please support artists with commissions. You're right, it is a difficult field because the process is so slow and tedious, and yes these tools will definitely be taken advantage of by large studios, but at the same time, they are avaliable to all creatives. Photoshop is not free, buying a tablet is not free, Paper and pencil cost money, it has never been free to make art. This is an incredibly powerful tool that could viably speed up production for any artist and its literally free. Will there be people displaced from this technology? Absolutely but it will also empower many who didn't have the means to create before as well.

I watched RRR with my dad and it was a lot of fun.
I understand that there was still working put in the back end for the end product, but I don't understand the idea that this won't just be a net negative harm on 2D artists and animators. Saying it's okay "because we're not an animation studio" kind of drives the point home, you didn't even need 2D animators, how does this save underpaid animators and not just get them laid off and replaced with AI? Why would you need concept artists? You may not have not fired people, but there's a lot of people that could have used the work and you could absolutely afford it.
There's also the mention of holding other people accountable yet the more concerning points about AI are either hand-waved away or relegated to lower reach side content. I get that you're artists but that kind of makes it weird that there's kind of an intentional ignorance to the plight of other artists in disciplines. I'd also caution misrepresenting this as "democratizing" art because it reinforces the stereotype that artists are privileged and that the average person can't get into creation when that's absolutely wrong.
Animators are already underpaid, These free tools can allow animators to quickly and cheaply bring their vision to life. Democratizing means freeing the animators, most animators are employed by large studios because current traditional and even digital animation still takes a ton of labor, so thousands of animators are exploited to bring a corporations vision to life. Now all those professional artists can work in smaller teams with smaller budgets, no longer needing the backing of a Large Studio, to create their passion projects, and they keep all the profits. You're saying animators will lose their jobs from this tech, but those jobs were exploiting their labor, taking their labor and giving peanuts in return.

11/10 awesome that you're making new tools for artists to work with. I think this will be akin to when we started drawing on computers instead of paper. You can do it the old way, and that doesn't lose its appeal. But brodudes, the new way will help with so many things. This is a new virtual frontier of creation!
The Ai that is used here is used as a tool for the vision of the art. If you need to only use AI to make art for you and then don’t shape it to your vision that’s like wanting to be the best Athelete on steroids that demands to win because of the PEDs.
You didnt use Arcane because you would have been sued to within an inch of your lives.
PNG sequence could've easily been coded using python, and integrated within the Stable diffusion UI itself. Lot of automations were and are possible to make this a much efficient workflow! :D
also, can have davinci resolve plugin coded using ChatGPT, where it just takes these png sequences using dflicker, and then sends it back to the stabel diffusion UI again. ...oh my..

I also think it’s extremely scummy to hide how to copy artists entire style behind a paywall.

Honestly the next thing I'd love to see is you taking on the most famously badly cgi'd movies. Think scorpion king or maybe even some nollywood things and turn them into animations made by AI or turn them into cartoons to make them whatchable. Or alternatively try to make some famous movie scenes into different styles, or turn one of your own videos into animation
Alternatively, taking on really badly animated anime like Chargeman Ken would be really cool
AI issues are pretty minimal given that this kind of AI image work is incredibly new. Give it 2 or 3 years and you'll gave systems that automatically feedback things that you like.

There are thousands of Mangas and thousands of novels waiting to be animated add onto more of the stories that are not just based in Japan but actual good fanfiction and lore from video games and one person backstory. We will get a load of shit and a load of diamonds. At a point it might even be that meritocracy emerges farther as the entry point is constantly lowered

@@lazorman96 here's the thing a shit ton of animations are in the basic range and look alike to the point where 30% of anime looks exactly the same. Also there is the whole shift of trying to make 3d models work even though more times than not they are shit. If I had a place to put this I'll say it's around the grade of 2004 bad animation feel. The thing you don't understand is that there is so many manga and light novels that at least deserve a place in the sun of anime but will likely never even considering the increase in anime being made.

Exactly for this reason , studios cutting budget cause the market is oversaturated and the studios cant pay nor give the animators enough time to create decent products , now imagine a market in which you have fewer artists working and 10 times more content .the value of said content plummets to the ground , the companies pay even less (because they earn less and less with every new anime cause the offer outstands the demand ) and give even less time for the animators to publish and the whole industry is just submerged by shitty cheap mediocre content

I had my wife watch the anime video with no context. Her only feedback was that she felt the animation felt out of time from a normal anime. I think she is subconsciously picking up the pop-ins and registering that as a movement.
She thought the art was good, the world was interesting and the dialog matched. She even enjoyed the motion effects like speed lines. Great job and excited to see where this goes from here!

Is an art style something one can steal? If so, every traditional artist around today is a thief. Making art inspired by others isn't theft.
People are taking exception to this but as creators corridor is not an antagonist. Technological advancements have always put people with certain jobs at risk of being left begind; the printing press and typists, cars and carriage drivers, and now AI and illustrators. Instead of detesting the idea of its existence, it should be embraced and used as a tool, not shunned and banned.
You guys should watch some Boruto fights, it really speaks to anime creating it's own film language!! It's so so so inspiring and hype and cool
I know I showed my friends the video and they were so disappointed that a machine drew the people. They felt like animators were going to be irrelevant in the next decade. I felt inspired. I saw the video and I felt that ME, MYSELF, AND I could make an anime now. Would it be easy: no. Drawing the people is only one step, there's still making the drawn frames actually work and look decent, upscaling those frames, editing, composting, and sound design. There's still a process, but it's achievable.
